Chapter 3: Stealing the Wife in a Stand-in Novel (Part 3)
Chen Suihe’s plan was very simple just a straightforward plot to “seduce away the scumbag’s White Moonlight and make the scumbag suffer in agony.”
Her sluggish, rusted brain couldn’t come up with any sophisticated or brilliant schemes at the moment. However, even such a simple plan was executed by her in a way that was painful to watch.
Taking advantage of living in Shen Chuli’s home, she clumsily asked for a phone and searched the internet for “little tips on seduction.” Little did she know that the phone given to her had been tampered with by Shen Chuli long ago; every move she made was under Shen Chuli’s surveillance.
After several days of meticulous study, the first step of the revenge plan recorded in her memos was finally set to begin: Seduction.
That night, Chen Suihe changed into a thin silk nightgown, wetted her hair according to plan, and hovered at Shen Chuli’s door for a long time before finally knocking.
When the bedroom door opened, she imitated the videos she had studied, leaning against the doorframe and raising her hand to brush the damp strands of hair clustered around her neck. Shen Chuli stared at her for a long time so long that Chen Suihe almost thought her plan had been seen through before Shen Chuli finally moved.
In a daze, Chen Suihe found herself wrapped in the bath towel Shen Chuli had been holding and carried into the bedroom.
As she sat on the bed, enjoying Shen Chuli’s attentive hair-drying service, she finally regained her senses to think: The step of “entering the bedroom” counts as a success, right?
Before her rusty little brain could react further, her hair was dry. Shen Chuli used a dry towel to wipe the water droplets off her skin with an exceptionally serious expression.
Chen Suihe decided to proceed to the second step. She gestured a question: Are you going to rest?
“Mhm, let’s sleep together tonight.” In just a few days, Shen Chuli’s understanding of Chen Suihe’s self-taught sign language had improved by leaps and bounds. After putting away the hairdryer and towel, she brought out another pair of pajamas and handed them to Chen Suihe. “Change into these. Is it comfortable wearing damp pajamas?”
Chen Suihe shook her head, confused by Shen Chuli, who had turned around to give her privacy immediately after handing over the clothes.
Could I really be a genius, just like the orphanage director mom used to say?
Amidst her confusion, Chen Suihe couldn’t help but feel a bit of self-satisfaction: Seducing people isn’t that hard after all!
Unbeknownst to her, the posts, videos, and websites she had referenced were all carefully selected and fed to her by someone else.
After falling asleep beside Shen Chuli, the person who should have been deep in slumber opened her eyes, clear and sharp, and pulled the girl into her arms. Thank goodness for the cameras hidden in every corner of the house; they had faithfully recorded Chen Suihe’s “seamless” seduction attempt.
Heaven knows how anxious Shen Chuli had been while waiting in the bedroom! Watching her hesitate at the door, Shen Chuli had almost been unable to stop herself from “accidentally” opening the door first. But then, she wouldn’t have been able to enjoy the little fool’s initiative.
Shen Chuli tightened her embrace, their bodies pressed together intimately. The thought of Chen Suihe wearing her pajamas and lying in her arms filled Shen Chuli with overwhelming satisfaction. She took a deep breath at the crook of the girl’s neck before finally falling asleep contentedly.
Unlike Shen Chuli’s contentment, Chen Suihe did not sleep soundly.
She dreamed she was being tightly entwined by a giant octopus all night, but when she opened her eyes, she found herself holding Shen Chuli firmly. Their legs were tangled together, inseparable. Unaccustomed to such intimate skin-to-skin contact, Chen Suihe tried to carefully withdraw her leg, only for the “sleeping” Shen Chuli to be “woken up.”
“You’re awake?” Shen Chuli’s voice carried a hint of hoarseness. They were so close that Chen Suihe felt her ear itch and scratched it uncomfortably.
There were dark circles under Shen Chuli’s eyes, a clear sign of poor sleep. Recalling the scene when she first woke up, Chen Suihe couldn’t help but feel guilty.
Should I make breakfast? She gestured an active request to cook, hoping to offset her guilt.
Shen Chuli didn’t say a word. She gently pinched Chen Suihe’s thin cheek and stood up with a yawn to head to the kitchen. Chen Suihe rubbed her cheek and followed behind her obediently in her fluffy rabbit slippers.
They had lived together for a week now. Shen Chuli’s house, which once looked as cold as a model home, was gradually filling with traces of another person. A bright yellow blanket was spread over the sofa, soft plushies were everywhere, and the bookcase once filled with Shen Chuli’s certificates had been cleared to display the little trinkets Chen Suihe had made or bought.
“How about egg noodle soup?” Shen Chuli asked as she stood before the fridge. Only after seeing Chen Suihe nod did she begin to move.
Because Chen Suihe had a weak stomach, Shen Chuli, who originally preferred heavy flavors, had slowly transitioned to a light diet. Two simple bowls of egg noodle soup were placed on the table, and Shen Chuli called her over to eat.
Chen Suihe had a bad habit when eating: when she felt secure enough, her feet couldn’t stay still. She kicked off her fluffy rabbit slippers and swung her bare feet, occasionally brushing against Shen Chuli’s calf opposite her.
“Do you want to go stay somewhere else for a while?” Shen Chuli asked suddenly.
Chen Suihe’s swinging feet froze. She had an unchewed noodle hanging from her mouth, making her look dazed and prompting a light laugh from Shen Chuli. Coming back to her senses, Chen Suihe quickly bit off the noodle, her cheeks puffing out like a shy little hamster.
Swallowing the noodles, Chen Suihe asked tentatively: Is it… am I bothering you here? Where are we going?
Shen Chuli didn’t know how the girl had arrived at the conclusion she was being kicked out. Amused, she said, “No. Since we came back from the hospital, I’ve wanted to take you out for a walk. It’s just that your health wasn’t good enough before.”
“Do you want to go?” Shen Chuli stared at her.
Go out? Chen Suihe hesitated. She had just escaped from a cage; she had no degree, no job, and no source of income. She was essentially living off Shen Chuli’s charity.
Seeing her hesitation, Shen Chuli took the initiative: “Just as a favor to accompany me, okay?”
It would be a lie to say she didn’t want to go out and see the world.
“Sigh,” Shen Chuli feigned a pitiful look, pressing her advantage. “I’ve never asked you for anything. Are you really unwilling to even accompany me now?”
Suddenly finding herself the target of “condemnation,” Chen Suihe panicked. She hurried to explain: It’s not that, I’m just afraid of being a burden. I don’t have any money right now to pay you back.
Shen Chuli smiled, grasped Chen Suihe’s gesturing hand, and stared into her confused eyes. “No need. Spending money on you is something I do willingly.”
Her tone was exceptionally sincere, and the smile in her eyes was unconcealed, leaving Chen Suihe in a daze. She really wanted to ask Shen Chuli: Why are you so good to me?
Whether it was saving her, taking her in, bringing her to doctors, or now taking her on a trip their relationship shouldn’t have been like this. Recalling the novels she’d read where the “stand-in” eventually dies a tragic death, Chen Suihe felt lost.
Shen Chuli was a woman of action. She spoke of going out in the morning, and by noon, she was carrying Chen Suihe onto a plane. To cater to the “little country bumpkin,” she specifically booked a window seat.
Watching the plane pierce through the clouds, Chen Suihe clung to the window, excitedly pulling at Shen Chuli to look. Although she still couldn’t speak, her joyful mood was infectious. After the excitement died down, she suddenly remembered that the person beside her was a wealthy socialite; only someone like her would get this excited over a flight.
“The clouds are beautiful, aren’t they?” Shen Chuli whispered in her ear, pointing out the window. “Look at that one. Doesn’t it look like a little dog rolling over to act cute?”
Chen Suihe’s attention was easily diverted. Before any trace of self-inferiority could rise in her heart, it was dispelled by Shen Chuli.
The journey was long, and Chen Suihe lacked stamina. After watching the view for a while, she grew sleepy. After Shen Chuli thoughtfully adjusted the seat for her, she fell asleep in no time.
By the time she woke up, she was already in a bed. Opening her eyes to a strange room, Chen Suihe felt a surge of fear. She scrambled out of bed to find Shen Chuli. In her panic, she tripped at the doorway, but instead of hitting the floor, she fell into a warm embrace.
“Why aren’t you wearing slippers?” Shen Chuli picked her up. Seeing her teary-eyed look, the words on her tongue shifted. “Want to go outside and see?”
Sitting in Shen Chuli’s arms, Chen Suihe’s heart slowly settled. She thought she heard the sound of waves, but she wasn’t sure.
Shen Chuli helped her put on her shoes and led her out by the hand. Within a few steps, they reached a beach of fine sand. Stepping on the soft sand and looking at the orange-red coastline and sunset, Chen Suihe instinctively let go of her hand and trotted forward with excitement.
A beach!
Chen Suihe blinked, looking around in wonder. After a moment, she ran back to Shen Chuli, looking at her expectantly to ask for the phone. Shen Chuli couldn’t resist pinching her cheek before handing it over.
Armed with the phone, Chen Suihe gave a silent cheer and rushed off to open the camera. In just a short while, Shen Chuli’s phone was filled with a heap of photos.
Shen Chuli wasn’t afraid of her running far, because Chen Suihe seemed to have her own internal radar; whenever the distance between them grew too large, she would stop, turn to find Shen Chuli, and then jog back to her side.
Repeating this cycle, she eventually grew tired. Chen Suihe crouched down, planning to rest for a bit. Before she could finish resting, someone crouched in front of her. “Let’s go, it’s getting a bit cold.”
Chen Suihe blinked. Once she understood the situation, she happily pounced onto Shen Chuli’s back. The streetlights at the cabin’s entrance stretched their shadows long. Chen Suihe wrapped her arms around Shen Chuli’s neck, gesturing wildly to tell her about her little discoveries.
Chen Suihe’s “battery” ran out the moment she stepped into the cabin. If not for the fear that she would wake up with a stomachache from hunger, she would have fallen asleep right then. After being coaxed into eating a little, the “robot” Chen Suihe completely shut down after the last spoonful, her head lolling over as she fell asleep.
After cleaning her up and tucking her into bed, Shen Chuli flipped through the photos Chen Suihe had taken on the phone. At first, they were photos of the sunset and the waves, but as she scrolled, Shen Chuli suddenly saw herself.
