Chapter 26: Stealing the Wife in a Dating Show (9)
This was her first time acting, so Chen Suihe was a bit clumsy. She kept forgetting her lines due to nervousness, and Shen Chuli spent a long time rehearsing with her.
The screenwriter had collaborated with Shen Chuli many times before, but this was the first time they had seen the famously cold-faced “Demon King” show such patience toward someone else.
After observing for a while, the screenwriter couldn’t help but ask the director, “Who is that acting with the Best Actress? To think she’d have the patience and dedication to teach her the scenes personally.”
The director clicked his tongue. “A guest from her dating show.”
The screenwriter let out a gasp. Watching their chemistry, inspiration suddenly struck. Picking up a laptop, the screenwriter began typing away furiously.
A while later, just as Chen Suihe was finally finding the right emotions and memorizing her lines, a “flying page” (script revision) was delivered by the staff.
Shen Chuli scanned the new pages. Compared to the original script, this version made the emotional arc between the Female Official and Qin’er much richer and the characters more three-dimensional.
“The two of you will definitely bring them to life. I believe in you!” The screenwriter popped up holding the laptop, eyes shining as they looked at the pair. “This was my original vision for the Official and Qin’er. Take a close look!”
Looking at the script, which had significantly thickened, Chen Suihe felt her head spinning.
Clutching the script, she looked toward Shen Chuli for help. As a newcomer, taking on such a complex character right away meant there was a high probability she’d mess up and become a stain on the production.
“It’s okay,” Shen Chuli leaned in close and whispered comfortingly. “I’ll walk you through the scenes.”
She pulled Chen Suihe to sit on small stools by the wall. The two sat intimately close, rehearsing in low voices.

A hashtag quietly climbed to the bottom of the Weibo trending list. Although no names were explicitly mentioned, there were enough keywords to entice many casual observers to click.
Wow, Sui Sui is moving into the acting world now? Has she started filming?
Oh my, Sui Sui as a classical beauty is so stunning! I want to take a bite!
LOL at the person above don’t sleep too soundly tonight, or a certain Best Actress might ‘dark-shark’ (assassinate) you.
While the fans were harmoniously showering her with praise, someone intentionally looked for trouble: Am I the only one who feels bad for the girl dressed exactly like Chen Suihe who had her role stolen? She’s a professional actress too. Who knows how hard she worked to get that role, only to be replaced easily by someone who loves snatching parts? Seriously, are people actually empathizing with a role-thief?
As soon as this comment appeared, the peaceful comments section fell silent.
What is the person above yelling about? The director made the decision. Why blame Sui Sui?
Oh sure, your ‘Sui’ is such a heartthrob, right? She definitely didn’t get the role by riding the Best Actress’s coattails. The director just happened to have ‘discerning eyes’ and forced the role on her.
Speechless. Can we not start a fan war? Sui Sui is just a regular person. Is such malice necessary?
Who’s starting a war? Can we not tell the truth anymore?
Just as a flame war was about to ignite, someone added fuel to the fire.
Maybe some people remember that one of the original permanent guests of a certain dating show is now just a guest star? Screenshot of Ren Lu’s Weibo: I’m going to fall in love! (Shy emoji).JPG So…
Ugh, I’m so done. How can someone who steals roles and jobs still act like a pure, innocent ‘White Lotus’? Does she really not feel guilty?
The person above underestimates the thick skin of a White Lotus.
Ren Lu’s fans mobilized immediately, swarming the topic’s front page and firmly labeling Chen Suihe with the crimes of “stealing roles” and “stealing jobs.”
Back at the set, despite the added pages, Shen Chuli and Chen Suihe’s scenes weren’t overly heavy. Furthermore, once Chen Suihe became immersed, she was a quick study. By evening, the scenes for the Official and Qin’er were finished.
The final scene featured the Female Official being executed by the antagonist at a noisy, crowded marketplace. Not far from the execution platform lay the handkerchiefs and blankets Qin’er had been selling.
Watching her lover—whom she had only recently confessed her feelings to—being cruelly murdered, Qin’er was frozen to the spot. Once the crowd dispersed, she rushed forward like a madwoman to embrace her lover’s body, weeping bitterly.
To enhance the atmosphere, the crew used water trucks to create rain.
Chen Suihe was so deeply in character that she truly believed she was Qin’er. She held Shen Chuli’s “Official” tightly, weeping silently. If Shen Chuli hadn’t noticed something was wrong, sat up from her arms, and whispered comforts to her, Chen Suihe might have cried herself into a faint.
Her apricot eyes were swollen from crying. With Shen Chuli’s help, she gradually managed to pull herself out of Qin’er’s emotions.
A dry, warm towel was draped over her. Chen Suihe took a sip of the ginger tea the director had specially sent over, and her heavy heart finally began to settle.
“How are you feeling?” Shen Chuli gave her a piece of candy. “Are you back yet?”
Chen Suihe sniffled and nodded with her red, swollen eyes.
“It was so interesting!” Having stepped out of the role, she belatedly felt the joy of that moment. “I really felt like my lover had died just now. For that moment, it felt like I was Qin’er.”
When talking about things that interested her, Chen Suihe’s eyes sparkled.
Shen Chuli still had a few pick-up shots to film, so she called an assistant to take Chen Suihe to the dressing room to change.
Stripping away Qin’er’s makeup and costume, she returned to being “Sui Sui the Ear of Grain.” Since waiting for Shen Chuli would take some time, she pulled out her phone and posted in her family group chat, “The Loving Family of One Billion.”
Chen Suihe came from a large family; the group chat had about twenty or thirty people, all of whom were close blood relatives.
Sui Sui is Safe: Family! Acting is so much fun!
Sui Sui’s Dearest Eldest Aunt: What’s wrong, Sui Sui? Do you want to go into acting? Your Eldest Uncle happens to have a script right here. I’ll have Little Li send it to you tomorrow for you to check out?
Sui Sui’s Dearest Dad: Don’t listen to your Aunt; she’s definitely just looking for one now. Sui Sui, are you having fun? When are you coming home? Dad misses you to death!
Sui Sui’s Darling Younger Aunt: Does baby Sui Sui want to play again? You definitely have to sign with my agency this time. You signed with your Eldest Aunt last time!
Sui Sui’s Aunt’s Favorite Little Treasure: Cousin! My mom asked when you’re coming home. She misses you so, so much!
In an instant, the group chat was flooded with over 99 messages. Dizzied, Chen Suihe simply “played dead” and locked her screen.
Thinking of her enthusiastic family, Chen Suihe sighed helplessly. Her family members were wonderful in every way, except they all treated her like a fragile vase that needed constant protection.
Exiting the family chat, she opened a window with a contact named “The World’s Greatest Designer”: Mommy, acting is quite interesting.
She waited a long time, but there was no reply. Sui Sui sighed again, guessing her dear mother had likely gone to some primitive tribe for design inspiration again.
A while later, Shen Chuli returned. She was soaking wet, leaving a trail of water on the floor as she walked.
Chen Suihe hurriedly tossed her phone onto the sofa, grabbed a large bath towel, and ran over to wrap Shen Chuli in a tight hug. The thick towel absorbed most of the water, but the layers of costume were still dripping.
“I need to change first.” Shen Chuli gently created some distance, afraid of getting Chen Suihe wet. “Could you please go get a cup of ginger tea for me?”
Chen Suihe loved being needed and nodded happily.
Not long after stepping out, she bumped into the actress who was originally supposed to play “Qin’er.” After a brief chat, Chen Suihe added her as a contact and recommended her to her family members.
Just as Shen Chuli was wondering why getting tea was taking so long, Chen Suihe returned clutching a massive, ancient tea jar. It was clearly an antique; much of the enamel on the body had chipped away.
Taking the heavy jar, Shen Chuli remembered that the production next door was filming a Republic-era drama. She had no idea how Chen Suihe had managed to borrow an “antique” from a group of veteran actors to serve her ginger tea.
After downing the massive jar of tea, Shen Chuli started to sweat, but she was also quite full.
“Hurry, put on your coat!” Chen Suihe rushed over to wrap a trench coat around her. “Wait here a moment, I’ll wash the jar and return it.”
Chen Suihe came and went like a whirlwind. Before Shen Chuli could say a word, she had disappeared.
Unable to stop her, Shen Chuli obediently wrapped herself in the coat and sat on the sofa to wait. Several scripts were scattered on the sofa, all open and clearly flipped through. Shen Chuli moved over and turned a few pages, noticing ink that hadn’t quite dried yet.
Chen Suihe returned after returning the jar. Before she could speak, Shen Chuli looked her way. Chen Suihe stepped forward to adjust the coat on her shoulders and said cheerfully, “Let’s go back!”
Although they were only guest stars, the director had prepared a small “wrap” celebration for them. Holding a red envelope, Chen Suihe hopped in place with excitement.
“This is my first time acting and getting a wrap red envelope!” Swaying her head happily, she took a photo of the envelope to send to her family before tucking it into her pocket.
Seeing her joy, Shen Chuli asked softly, “Does Sui Sui like acting?”
“I do!” Chen Suihe nodded vigorously. “It feels very interesting. The moment the camera focuses on me, I feel like I am Qin’er and Qin’er is me. In just a short time, I got to experience the joys and sorrows of Qin’er’s entire life.”
When they returned to the “heartbeat house,” everyone else was already asleep. Chen Suihe and Shen Chuli hadn’t eaten yet, and their stomachs were growling. Chen Suihe tiptoed into the kitchen, tied on an apron, and prepared to make two bowls of noodles with greens and poached eggs.
Just as the gas stove was lit, a small gasp came from the living room.
“Sister Chuli, you’re back.”
Ren Lu, wearing pajamas and rubbing her eyes, looked as if she had just been woken up. She yawned, covering her mouth, and approached Shen Chuli. “Have you eaten, Sister Chuli? I made extra tonight. Should I heat it up for you?”
“No need.” Seeing her approach in thin pajamas, Shen Chuli frowned and stepped back to create distance. “Sui Sui is cooking.”
Hearing her name, Chen Suihe popped her head out from the kitchen. She brought out two bowls of plain noodles and smiled apologetically.
Seeing Shen Chuli take the noodles from Chen Suihe and sit at the dining table, Ren Lu’s expression twisted for a split second, her gaze full of venom.
Collecting her emotions, she sat gracefully beside Shen Chuli, resting her chin on her hand while looking at the “foolish-looking” Chen Suihe. After a long pause, she smiled. “I heard Sui Sui went filming today? How did it feel?”
The person who had hated her in every possible way this morning was now calling her by her nickname. The sound made Chen Suihe shiver involuntarily.
