Chapter 25: Stealing the Wife in a Romance Reality Show (Part 8)
Ren Lu smiled with extreme warmth as she personally pinned the brooch onto Chen Suihe’s collar. “It really suits you!”
Unlike the bullet comments praising her thoughtfulness, everyone present was a veteran of an industry crawling with “monsters and demons.” The moment she spoke, they heard the subtext loud and clear.
The producer couldn’t watch any longer. Through her headset, she instructed a staff member to call Chen Suihe over. The producer had been feeling stifled all morning! She was dying of frustration!
The moment she saw Chen Suihe, she grabbed her shoulders and said through gritted teeth, “Sui-sui, slap her face hard for me! If the slap is loud enough, there’s a bonus reward!”
At the mention of a bonus, Chen Suihe’s eyes lit up instantly.
When she returned, Chen Suihe looked as if she had received a divine decree. She no longer retreated as she had at the beginning. Seeing Chen Suihe return with her head held high and a spirited gait, Ren Lu felt something was slightly off. However, she ignored that bit of unease, her face still masked with a smile. “Sui-sui, come here quickly, I still have gifts for you.”
Chen Suihe walked to Shen Chuli’s side and swept her large eyes over the remaining “gifts”—bits and pieces in the suitcase that were essentially free samples from brand promotions or gift-with-purchase items.
Chen Suihe smiled and pointed to a sample bottle. “No need! I actually have the full-sized version of this product; it’s indeed very good. You should keep these samples for yourself.”
Ren Lu hadn’t expected her to point it out directly, and the smile on her face froze. Just as she was about to laugh it off and turn the page, she heard Shen Chuli follow up on Chen Suihe’s words.
“Although this brooch is a freebie, it’s said the designer created it specifically for his daughter,” Shen Chuli said coolly. “Miss Ren might as well use it paired with the main item; that way, you won’t have to ‘separate the mother from the daughter.'”
“That’s right,” Chen Suihe nodded from the side.
Her voice was calm and unhurried, yet it acted like a soft knife, repeatedly grazing Ren Lu.
“As for these—” Shen Chuli looked at the pile of expensive-looking luxury boxes and said to Ren Lu, “My financial strength still allows me to purchase the things I want. Miss Ren should keep these for her own use.”
Wu Yang and Jiang Wan hid to the side, covering their mouths in shock. They truly hadn’t expected Ren Lu to do something so classless and brainless. To give gifts to the guests but polarize them by giving the non-celebrity a freebie? She actually went through with it!
With Shen Chuli leading the way, Wu Yang and the others hurried to follow suit, returning the gifts they hadn’t wanted to accept in the first place.
Ren Lu’s face turned white. If she weren’t mindful of the cameras, she would have long since thrown a “rich young miss” tantrum!
Wait, the cameras!
Ren Lu remembered the live stream. She shifted her angle slightly, exposing her profile to the lens. The beauty’s eyes grew red as she bit her crimson lip hard, tears welling up in her eyes. No matter how you looked at it, she was the picture of a pitiful “Little White Flower.”
Predictably, this appearance incited her fans to launch a sympathetic crusade.
“? What is Movie Queen Shen doing? Is this collective bullying of Lulu?!”
“Yue (vomit), is this the grace of a Movie Queen? Leading an isolation campaign, disgusting!”
“Speechless. Does Chen Suihe not know how to take a hint? Our Lulu giving her anything is a favor. She’s just a non-celebrity who probably hasn’t even bought luxury goods; what’s wrong with a freebie!”
“Truly, does Chen Suihe have to be so greedy? Speechless.”
Ren Lu had always followed the path of a “Traffic Starlet.” Every time a new drama started, she used tactics like fighting for billing, “outshining” others in beauty, and buying press releases. Her fans were like a group of people living in their own world where Ren Lu was the ultimate heartthrob; they didn’t allow anyone to neglect her.
Ren Lu’s fans possessed explosive combat power. Ordinary passersby couldn’t argue with them, and soon the bullet comments were filled with insults calling Shen Chuli and the others ungrateful.
Ren Lu had too much luggage to carry upstairs, and Jiang Wan and the others didn’t want to live on the same floor as her. Fortunately, there were several guest rooms on the first floor. Wu Yang and the others actively helped tidy up and moved her in.
Chen Suihe usually didn’t let Shen Chuli participate in manual labor. It wasn’t that she thought she was clumsy, but rather she felt a person like her was born to sit there and be a “Flower on a High Ridge.” Today, however, Shen Chuli was exceptionally restless, holding a towel and following behind Chen Suihe, sticking to her closely. Several times when Ren Lu tried to talk to Shen Chuli, she was ignored.
Ren Lu was annoyed, but remembering her goal, she suppressed her anger. She didn’t believe Shen Chuli could stay glued to Chen Suihe for the entire day!
The selling points of a romance show are nothing more than sweet love, melodramatic drama, and “N-v-1” battlefield scenarios. But before Ren Lu arrived, the three pairs of guests were basically one-on-one and very focused—so much so that it didn’t look like a romance show but more like “Daily Married Life.” With Ren Lu’s involvement, the show finally felt a bit like a romance reality show.
After helping her settle into her room, the group gathered in the living room to discuss what to do next.
“Let’s go to a rural farmhouse,” Ren Lu suggested delicately, raising her hand. A farmhouse would be a great place to promote feelings. Picking vegetables together, playing games… one thing leads to another and there’s physical contact. Then, by intentionally creating an ambiguous atmosphere, they’d get a trending topic.
Ren Lu’s plan was beautiful; she had even thought about how to write the press releases afterward. But having been in the industry for so many years, how could Shen Chuli not see through her little schemes?
“I don’t want to go,” Shen Chuli said, leaning her head on Chen Suihe’s shoulder. “I have a temporary job this afternoon. Sui-sui, do you want to accompany me and be my little assistant?”
“Assistant?” Chen Suihe thought about it and nodded eagerly. She had never seen a film set with her own eyes!
Thus, Ren Lu’s plan fell through. She watched Shen Chuli take Chen Suihe away from the cottage. Wu Yang and the others also had their own work to attend to, leaving her, the “Flying Guest,” alone in the cottage. With Shen Chuli and the others gone, the director’s team sent the following cameramen with them, leaving Ren Lu with only one.
“What kind of crap romance show is this? Speechless. First time seeing a flying guest left alone in the cottage. Who are they romancing, a ghost?”
“LMAO, well done. Just leave her there alone.”
“Sorry, everyone else has work. Only your master has no job and is forcing her way in. Now she’s left behind.”
Knowing her fans’ temperament, Ren Lu intentionally acted lonely, sitting in the living room for a while before returning to her room. Seeing her desolate expression, her fans rushed to champion her cause. After a while, the “drama-queen” Ren Lu opened the live stream to answer her own questions while interacting (acting pitiful) with her fans.
The car stopped at the film city in Haishi. Chen Suihe looked curiously at the magnificent architecture. Shen Chuli got out first and opened the car door for her.
“Are you filming a costume drama?” Chen Suihe asked.
The set was crowded with people and equipment. To prevent Chen Suihe from being bumped into, Shen Chuli held her hand, dodging one thing after another. “Not exactly. I’m just here to make a cameo appearance.”
Passing through a large crowd, Shen Chuli finally led her to the director. Seeing Shen Chuli, the director was so happy his eyes almost disappeared. After a brief exchange, the director handed the script to Shen Chuli and gave a rough explanation of the plot and her character setting.
This was Chen Suihe’s first time seeing a live shoot. She sat on a small stool next to the director, staring at the screen showing Shen Chuli with “injury” makeup.
This was a scene involving a torture sequence. The female official played by Shen Chuli was framed by the villain and sent to the Court of State Ceremonies. The villain insulted and bullied her in various ways, solely to get her to betray the protagonists.
At the director’s command, Shen Chuli quickly entered the role. It had to be said that Shen Chuli’s status as the youngest Movie Queen was backed by genuine talent. At this moment, Chen Suihe’s mind and body were captured by her, following the joy and sorrow of the character.
Because it was a relatively minor role, the initial filming went smoothly. However, when it came to the emotional scene, Shen Chuli stalled.
“Stop!”
The director halted the shoot. Shen Chuli walked over, knowing herself that she was out of state.
“Chuli, can you make that emotion more full?” The director tried to guide her. “She is your lover. You need to wrap her in your love, not look at her like a passerby.”
Shen Chuli nodded. The director thought she understood and called for the shoot to resume. The beginning was fine, but when it came time for the official to confess to her sweetheart, Shen Chuli faltered again. Her words of love didn’t sound like love; they sounded like a plain, literal poetry recital.
The director called for a stop again, feeling a headache coming on. “Chuli, come, come here.” The director didn’t know what was wrong with her today and could only explain the scene to her, using exaggerated language to try and get her into the mood.
Shen Chuli listened for a long time. After a while, she suggested, “Let Sui-sui try acting the scene with me first.”
“That’s the only way for now,” the director agreed.
Chen Suihe didn’t understand how she, a bystander, was suddenly being “driven like a duck onto a perch.” A script was shoved into her hand, and she was pushed in front of Shen Chuli.
“Qin’er, my heart delights in you.” Shen Chuli looked into Chen Suihe’s eyes with deep affection. The surging emotions in her gaze were so intense that Suihe couldn’t see clearly.
Chen Suihe stared into her deep eyes, momentarily dazed into thinking she truly was that “Qin’er” and Shen Chuli truly was that female official. The director gave a reminder from the side, and Chen Suihe snapped back to her senses, stumbling through the lines in her hand: “B-but we are both women. This goes against the worldly norms.”
The female official of the fictional Zhao Dynasty gripped her sweetheart’s hand, the love in her eyes seemingly wanting to swallow her whole. “I know this relationship will not be accepted by the world, but I still want to reveal my heart to you. Qin’er, my heart delights in you.”
“Qin’er,” with her hand held by the official, opened and closed her mouth, having forgotten her lines completely.
“Good! That’s the effect!” Seeing Shen Chuli’s performance, the director couldn’t help but slap his thigh.
The director’s excited shouting pulled Chen Suihe back to reality. As if burned, she hurriedly pulled her hand away from Shen Chuli’s grasp.
The director looked at the two of them, stroked his chin, and said, “Chuli, why don’t we just have this girl act the scene with you!”
“Sure.” “No!”
Two voices sounded simultaneously. The director couldn’t help but look at them both.
“I… I don’t know how to act. I just forgot the lines,” Chen Suihe clumsily made an excuse. “It will delay your progress.”
The director waved his hand dismissively. “What does this little bit of progress matter? It’s not a major scene.” With that, he called over the makeup and costume artists to dress Chen Suihe.
Before Chen Suihe could even voice a refusal, she was forced into the role. After a while, a woman dressed in a ruqun (traditional gown) was led back to the set, shyly covering her face.
