Chapter 24: Stealing the Wife in a Romance Reality Show (Part 7)
Because a “Flying Guest” was arriving at the cottage today, Chen Suihe woke up early to start cooking, considering the guest might not have eaten after traveling.
When the Flying Guest arrived at the cottage, Chen Suihe had just turned off the stove and was dishing out the last stir-fry. Still wearing her apron, she heard someone calling out at the entrance. She set down her spatula and poked her head out from the kitchen.
“You, yes, you.” The Flying Guest, Ren Lu, walked in with a swaying gait. She took off her sunglasses and looked Chen Suihe up and down with a contemptuous gaze.
It was barely past seven, and the other guests weren’t awake yet. Ren Lu scanned the surroundings and tilted her chin arrogantly toward Chen Suihe: “Go, bring all my luggage in. Remember to carry them carefully; the things in those suitcases are more expensive than you.”
“?” Chen Suihe didn’t react immediately; she simply pointed at herself blankly.
Ren Lu was dissatisfied with her slowness. She clicked her tongue, and just as she was about to snap, she saw Shen Chuli coming down the stairs. Seeing Shen Chuli, Ren Lu’s face changed instantly. Her mean and aggressive demeanor vanished in the blink of an eye, replaced by a gentle and intellectual persona. Chen Suihe was stunned by the transformation.
“Movie Queen Shen,” she said softly, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear and calling out delicately. She reached out a hand to greet Shen Chuli, but to her surprise, Shen Chuli gave her no face at all. She walked right past her without looking, placing a protective arm around Chen Suihe’s shoulder.
Being intentionally ignored made Ren Lu’s face turn incredibly ugly, only to find the producer peeking out and raising an eyebrow at her. A dark camera lens was pointed directly at her, recording her every move truthfully. Ren Lu knew the producer was warning her not to act recklessly.
She cast a subtle glance at the working camera, and in an instant, a sweet smile was plastered back on her face—just like the “Little Junior Sister” character in the drama Chen Suihe was currently chasing.
In the courtyard outside the cottage, seven or eight oversized suitcases were lined up neatly. The moment she saw them, Chen Suihe sucked in a cold breath. Looking at this dense cluster of luggage, one would think someone was moving their entire house here.
Chen Suihe gave a few awkward laughs and scratched her head: “That’s… quite a lot, huh.”
Maybe they just look big, but they aren’t actually heavy inside, Chen Suihe comforted herself. She walked up to a suitcase, took a deep breath, and gave it a mighty pull!
The suitcase didn’t budge an inch.
Chen Suihe’s eyes widened, looking at the handle in her hand in disbelief.
“Let me,” Shen Chuli said, taking over the handle. The heavy suitcase seemed to lose half its weight instantly in Shen Chuli’s hands. Chen Suihe wasn’t one to give up; she tried to pull another one. The suitcase stood still, as if silently mocking her.
Chen Suihe got competitive!
Wu Yang and the others were awakened by the scent of food. Rubbing their eyes, they went to the living room but found no one; they only heard rhythmic cheering coming from the cottage entrance. Following the sound, Wu Yang found Jiang Wan and the producer holding balloons they had found somewhere, cheering for a red-faced Chen Suihe as she struggled to drag the luggage.
Wu Yang didn’t understand. She tucked her hands into her sleeves and squeezed through the crowd to find a spot. “What is Suihe doing?” she asked the person next to her.
“Sister Suihe said she wanted to help move my luggage. My bags must be quite heavy,” a “green tea” voice drifted from beside her. Wu Yang couldn’t help but frown and move a step away. Only then did she see clearly who the speaker was.
She looked at the three or four giant suitcases still in the yard and clicked her tongue: “They certainly are heavy.”
Ren Lu felt a bit slighted by Wu Yang’s sudden retort. She currently had a hit drama where she was the lead actress, and she considered herself second only to Shen Chuli in this program’s hierarchy. It was fine if Shen Chuli ignored her, but now even a third-tier actress like Wu Yang was giving her attitude!
Wu Yang brushed the dust off her pants and stepped forward to help Chen Suihe. With everyone’s assistance, the oversized suitcases were finally moved into the cottage.
Seeing the last suitcase brought in, Ren Lu—who had already changed clothes and was now wearing an apron—emerged from the kitchen carrying a bowl of sweet soup. “Everyone has worked hard, come and eat.”
Her vague wording drew a flood of praise from her fans in the live chat.
“Heavens, Lulu is so virtuous!”
“Wuuu, protect the world’s best Lulu! To thank Movie Queen Shen and the others for moving luggage, she specifically made a table of breakfast to pay them back!”
“Wait, Lulu is wearing an apron because she’s cooking, but why is that person wearing one? For show?”
“The person above should watch their mouth. Didn’t you see Sui-sui moving luggage for your giant baby Lulu?”
“What giant baby! She wanted to do it!”
Seeing a bloodbath about to erupt in the chat, the producer quickly disabled the comments and gave a smile to the director: “Does she think we just started the broadcast?” “Who knows,” the director said with a lazy yawn.
On the other side, Ren Lu enthusiastically invited Shen Chuli and the others to eat. Jiang Wan and his teammate exchanged a glance and sat down. Once the food entered their mouths, their expressions became quite strange.
Because of the kitchen grease and the sweat from moving luggage, Chen Suihe went upstairs to take a quick shower before coming down. Seeing everyone already eating, she happily ran over and habitually sat next to Shen Chuli.
As soon as she sat down, Ren Lu spoke with a look of feigned difficulty: “Sister Chuli doesn’t seem to like people sitting next to her, right?”
“Ah? Is that so?” Chen Suihe was stunned for a moment. Because Shen Chuli was so introverted (i), Chen Suihe had stayed by her side almost constantly these past few days to help her integrate with the group. This was the first time she had heard that Shen Chuli disliked people sitting next to her.
Thinking about her behavior over the past few days, a wave of shame washed over Chen Suihe. Just as she was about to stand back up, her wrist was caught and held down.
“You’re the exception,” Shen Chuli said. It was a brief sentence, but Chen Suihe understood it instantly. For some reason, despite it being a casual remark, Suihe felt the tips of her ears starting to burn.
Once everyone was present, the most impatient person, Jiang Wan, was the first to strike. He picked up a piece of green pepper and egg stir-fry and turned to Chen Suihe, saying the salt was a bit light today. Chen Suihe, suspecting nothing, immediately took a bite to taste it.
“What does that mean? What does Jiang Wan mean by that? Is he saying the food wasn’t made by our Lulu?”
“LMAO, your Lulu was in the kitchen for ten minutes and produced eight dishes and a soup? Sure, sure.”
“Does Jiang Wan know something? Speak up! Is there something us VIP viewers aren’t allowed to hear?”
“This food was made by Sui-sui early this morning, right? When Ren Lu arrived, didn’t Sui-sui come out in an apron to meet her?”
“Don’t be so shameless, trying to claim all the credit for your ‘monkey.’ The luggage was moved by all the guests, and the food was cooked by our Lulu. Now it’s all your wild monkey’s credit?”
“Speechless. Some people never forget to steal things. First, she stole Lulu’s spot, now she wants to steal Lulu’s credit.”
“It’s not, right?” Chen Suihe smacked her lips, tasting carefully.
“Is that so? Maybe I ate something else this morning that affected my taste buds,” Jiang Wan said with a smile to Chen Suihe, but his eyes repeatedly darted toward Ren Lu, who was sitting at the head of the table.
Ren Lu, still wearing her apron, felt the smile on her face starting to crack. She knew perfectly well that Chen Suihe had made the food; she had seen her come out of the kitchen with her own eyes. But she thought Chen Suihe was just an unknown “non-celebrity”—what if she took the credit? Chen Suihe should be grateful, and Jiang Wan and the others should have the sense to help her maintain the facade. Who knew Jiang Wan would expose it so bluntly!
Seeing her composure break slightly, Wu Yang wasn’t planning on letting her off.
“Sui-sui, come taste the sweet soup ‘hand-made’ by our Flying Guest.” She ladled a bowl of sweet soup and handed it to Chen Suihe, specifically emphasizing the words “hand-made.”
Chen Suihe heard the subtext. She looked up and locked eyes with Ren Lu’s jealous, twisted gaze. Chen Suihe didn’t consider herself a saint without a bottom line, nor was she as “good-tempered” as Jiang Wan and the others thought. If she were at home, she would have thrown a fit with her parents long ago. But since this was her current job, she didn’t say anything and proactively looked away.
“What are the plans for today?” She took the sweet soup and intentionally changed the subject. “Did the Producer Sister issue a mission card?”
Seeing her retreat, Ren Lu’s shaky confidence gained a bit of grounding. She knew it—Chen Suihe was just a commoner with no power or influence. No matter how much Jiang Wan and the others wanted to back her up, she still had to bow her head in front of her!
“I heard you guys went to the amusement park yesterday?” Ren Lu asked, knowing the answer. “I’ve always admired Sister Chuli. Can I spend the whole day alone with her today?”
Jiang Wan and the others said nothing, only Chen Suihe looked at Shen Chuli with a bit of worry.
“No,” Shen Chuli said, wiping the corner of her mouth, not even bothered to look up. “We’ve already split into groups. Find someone else.” After saying that, she turned and said warmly to Chen Suihe: “Are you full? Why don’t you share the things from yesterday with everyone?”
That one sentence diverted Chen Suihe’s attention. She hurriedly stuffed a few bites of a bun, finished the sweet soup, wiped her mouth, and ran back to her room. A moment later, she dragged out a large bag.
“This is for Jiang Wan, this is for Wu Yang…” Chen Suihe practically dived into the bag, pulling out carefully selected gifts for her friends, which Shen Chuli then handed to them.
As the gifts were being distributed, Ren Lu watched coldly as Chen Suihe’s hair got messy from rummaging. She was already imagining how her fans would attack Suihe if she “accidentally” left out a gift for her.
“For you!” Chen Suihe held out a crystal ball with a sword-wielding girl in red standing in the center. Her energetic voice pulled Ren Lu back from her thoughts.
Ren Lu looked at the clearly cheap-looking crystal ball, her disgust almost overflowing, but she still accepted it with a fake smile. Chen Suihe felt as if she’d been doused in cold water; the remaining “Junior Sister” filter she had for Ren Lu shattered completely.
“I brought gifts for everyone too,” Ren Lu said, casually tossing the crystal ball onto the table as she smiled at the others. The white base of the crystal ball hit a plate, and some sauce splashed onto the snowy plaster. The smile on Chen Suihe’s face slowly faded.
Unlike the souvenirs Chen Suihe bought at the park, Ren Lu’s gifts were expensive luxury brand sets. Ren Lu seemed very thoughtful, giving Shen Chuli and the others gifts they could use immediately—it looked like she had done her research. However, when it came to Chen Suihe, the “thoughtful” gift turned into a freebie sample from a luxury brand set.
“This brooch is very beautiful and suits you well, Sui-sui,” Ren Lu said with superficial affection, shoving the freebie brooch into her hand.
