Chapter 1: Stealing the Wife in a Substitute Novel (Part 1)
“BANG—”
The massive sound of the door being kicked open jolted Chen Suihe back to her senses. A flash of vibrant red burst into her dull, emotionless eyes.
A woman dressed in a red leather jacket strode in, looking exceptionally brilliant and flamboyant.
Chen Suihe recognized her. She was the “Cinnabar Mole”, the “White Moon” that Xu Hao pined for day and night. And she, Chen Suihe, was merely her cheap, low-quality substitute.
Logically, the moment a “stand-in” sees the “original”, they should feel panic, cowardice, or an inferiority complex. But Chen Suihe was different; her heart was thumping like a drum for a different reason.
She stared intently at the radiant woman walking toward her, her heart swelling with joy: The authentic version is back. Does this mean I, the imitation, can finally be granted my freedom?
She wanted to ask, but her lips parted without making a sound. Having gone so long without speaking to anyone, she had long since succumbed to aphasia. Her question remained unasked, and there was no one to answer.
In the blink of an eye, the woman reached her. Her slender fingers pinched Chen Suihe’s chin, the slight calluses on her fingertips feel irritating. Chen Suihe was like a withering flower, resting quietly in the woman’s hand.
A moment later, a crowd swarmed in. Chen Suihe immediately spotted Xu Hao, who looked a bit awkward yet inexplicably smug.
“Chuli, listen to me explain…”
Behind the woman was Xu Hao, incessantly trying to clear his name and distance himself from Chen Suihe. Listening to his increasingly noisy voice, Chen Suihe suddenly had a wicked thought.
If I force a kiss on Xu Hao’s White Moon right here in front of everyone, will he go insane?
To the collective gasp of the crowd, Chen Suihe reached out and pushed the woman in front of her down, straddling her and clumsily pressing her lips against hers.
It was called a kiss, but in reality, it was just their lips colliding. The metallic taste of blood from the impact spread through both their mouths.
This was her first time kissing anyone. She pressed against Shen Chuli’s lips with unskilled force, accidentally bumping the wound on her own lip. Chen Suihe winced in pain. Just as she tried to pull away and stand up, a hand domineeringly pressed against the back of her neck.
Shen Chuli was like an addict, chasing after her lips.
A tongue as agile as a cunning snake skillfully pried open Chen Suihe’s teeth, gently yet dominantly taking possession of her mouth. Chen Suihe was forced into a lingering entanglement.
This is too much!
Chen Suihe’s head buzzed. The gasps and the broken-hearted curses around them faded away; her world narrowed down to only the person in front of her. She stared blankly, her breath stolen away.
She didn’t know when Shen Chuli finally let her go, but when a voice laced with amusement reached her ears, Chen Suihe reacted like a rusty little robot, taking deep, ragged breaths according to the “owner’s” command.
“Chen Suihe!”
Xu Hao was going absolutely ballistic!
Initially, when he learned Shen Chuli was privately investigating Chen Suihe, he felt an indescribable surge of joy, thinking he was finally about to get what he wanted.
But reality slapped him hard in the face!
He was being held back by his so-called “brothers,” unable to step forward. He watched with his own eyes as the little lover he kept pounced on his White Moon—and when the lover tried to leave, she was held by the neck and kissed into breathlessness.
Xu Hao’s eyes were nearly bloodshot as he glared at them. Before he could speak, he saw Shen Chuli take off her red leather jacket and drape it over Chen Suihe’s shoulders.
With a light chuckle, Shen Chuli picked Chen Suihe up. Chen Suihe, whose thoughts had drifted to the heavens, snapped back to reality only to find herself nestled securely in the woman’s arms.
Ever since that intense kiss, she couldn’t understand what Shen Chuli was doing anymore. No, it started from the moment she kicked the door down.
Despite being the “original,” Shen Chuli had discovered the “substitute,” yet instead of showing contempt or mockery, she had held the substitute’s head and refused to let her leave.
Chen Suihe’s rusty brain began to jam. She looked at Shen Chuli in confusion.
Under her puzzled gaze, Shen Chuli leaned in and pecked her lips. “Hold on tight.”
Obediently, Chen Suihe pressed closer, resting her face against the woman’s neck.
If not for the group of people holding him back, Xu Hao would have rushed forward to tear them apart! But before he could explode, Shen Chuli carried the doll-like, obedient Chen Suihe right up to him.
Through her dazed state, Chen Suihe heard Shen Chuli say to Xu Hao with an air of satisfaction: “Thank you for putting in the effort to find me a partner who suits my tastes so perfectly.”
At first, Chen Suihe thought she was hallucinating. The “authentic version” boasting to a scumbag while holding the “fake”? It was completely illogical!
But as she fully regained her senses and saw Xu Hao’s face turning a deep, angry purple, it suddenly felt real.
In the past, she feared Xu Hao most when he looked like this. Whenever he appeared at the villa with that expression, it meant she was about to be humiliated, isolated, or punished for some non-existent fault.
But today was different. Chen Suihe sat safely in Shen Chuli’s arms, looking down at his pathetic state. Amidst her relief, she found it hilarious.
As it turns out, he wasn’t invincible or beyond resistance after all.
Shen Chuli carried her out of the villa. The invisible cages and chains that had weighed on her seemed to collapse and shatter silently the moment they stepped out the front gate.
After placing her in the passenger seat and buckling the seatbelt, Shen Chuli finally remembered to ask for her name.
But it had been too long since anyone had spoken to her. The villa was always silent; she was always alone. Xu Hao didn’t allow her to have her own thoughts, likes, habits, or personality; he wanted to mold her into his own version of “Shen Chuli”. Her thoughts and movements were like a rusty machine—delayed, slow, and constrained.
Watching Chen Suihe open her mouth without making a sound, Shen Chuli couldn’t help but curse inwardly.
Before returning to the country, she had heard that the scumbag Xu Hao was keeping a girl who looked thirty to forty percent like her. At first, she didn’t care—if it was a consensual arrangement, why should she get involved? It might even lead to misunderstandings, which would be disgusting.
But ever since she learned of Chen Suihe’s existence, Shen Chuli saw her in her dreams every night. Eventually, she dreamed of Chen Suihe, wearing a thin white dress just like the one she was wearing now, jumping off a building. Shen Chuli woke up in a cold sweat, returned to the country overnight, and guessed the villa’s location based on the dream.
She had only intended to bluff Xu Hao, as she wasn’t sure if her guess was correct. Who knew that narcissistic trash would be so easy to crack?
The moment she kicked the door open and saw Chen Suihe, Shen Chuli’s heart stopped for a second. The person from her dreams finally had a face. She walked over, suppressing her excitement, but before she could even trace the girl’s features, she was pushed down and kissed.
Shen Chuli’s germaphobia and hatred of intimacy vanished instantly. she went along with it, and when Chen Suihe tried to pull away, she uncontrollably deepened the kiss. Licking the wound on her lip, her expression was full of sweetness.
The fiery red sports car was as eye-catching as Shen Chuli’s personality. However, the engine that usually roared loudly seemed to have been drugged today. The car, famous for its speed, moved only slightly faster than a shared bicycle on the sidewalk, causing passersby to stare.
Chen Suihe clung to the window, her sparkling eyes greedily and joyfully taking in every bit of scenery on the road. The car crawled into the underground parking lot of a high-end residential complex.
Admittedly, Shen Chuli suspected she was taking advantage of a person in peril, but she couldn’t bear to let Chen Suihe leave just like that. She can’t speak, she has no money… how unsafe would it be for her to be alone outside? Shen Chuli brainwashed herself with her own logic.
After parking, Shen Chuli got out first. After waiting a while without seeing Chen Suihe emerge, she grew anxious and hurried to open the passenger door. Looking down, she saw Chen Suihe’s pale, shoeless feet. Only then did she realize that in her haste to carry her out, they had forgotten her shoes.
“Let me carry you, okay?” For some reason, facing Chen Suihe’s dull, hollow eyes, Shen Chuli couldn’t help but soften her voice. Perhaps she was afraid the girl would leap away like in her dream, or perhaps she had already fallen in love at first sight in those dreams and couldn’t help but pity her.
Suppressing her excitement, Shen Chuli’s arms trembled slightly. Chen Suihe looked at her in confusion. Shen Chuli cleared her throat and explained, “I haven’t exercised in too long.”
What does that have to do with exercise?
Chen Suihe didn’t understand, but fearing she might fall, she proactively wrapped her arms around Shen Chuli’s neck, pressing closer. The scent of the person in her arms intensified; Shen Chuli’s breath hitched. She feigned composure as she carried her into the elevator.
As the elevator moved, Chen Suihe buried herself in the woman’s embrace. Shen Chuli couldn’t help but wonder if she had been possessed or cursed. How else could I be acting so out of character?
“Beep—Welcome home.”
The electronic lock opened. Shen Chuli stood still for a long time, until the person in her arms tilted her head in confusion.
“Do you want to record a fingerprint?” Shen Chuli’s ears were burning. She instinctively avoided Chen Suihe’s gaze. “It will be convenient for you to go out when I’m not home.”
Chen Suihe was surprised. Not only had the White Moon helped her escape that prison, but she was even willing to let her stay at her home. Releasing one hand from the woman’s neck, Chen Suihe awkwardly gestured with her hands to say thank you.
But she had never formally learned sign language. There were no electronic devices in the villa, so the “signs” she used were mostly her own self-taught inventions. The resulting gestures left Shen Chuli completely bewildered.
“Wait!”
Shen Chuli stopped her hands, took her finger to record the fingerprint on the lock, then carried her inside and set her down. She hurriedly brought over a pen and paper. “I’m sorry, I don’t understand yet, but I will learn. Can you write it down?”
Holding the pen and paper, Chen Suihe froze. If she hadn’t been forcibly kidnapped by Xu Hao, she would have been starting her sophomore year of college right now.
Her hand holding the pen began to shake uncontrollably. Shen Chuli panicked, not knowing what she had done to cause Chen Suihe’s emotional breakdown.
“Don’t cry.” Shen Chuli knelt before her, helplessly using her hands to wipe away the overflowing tears.
