Chapter 3: The Question
Twenty minutes later, the sound of a door opening signaled Lin Chumu’s entry into her room.
A small nightlight was on, and the soft, diffused yellow light first illuminated a pair of exceptionally striking legs.
Lin Chumu’s legs were slender, straight, and fair as polished jade, but her pajamas were long, covering everything above the knee, only allowing a glimpse of the beautiful curve of her lower legs. Her freshly washed hair was damp, resting on her shoulders, with one strand falling unintentionally onto her collarbone, looking particularly alluring as she moved.
Lu Chaoqing, who was secretly observing from under the covers, felt her throat was dry, perhaps because she hadn’t drunk any water before arriving, and she couldn’t help but swallow.
It seemed…
It seemed a fling with a woman like this might not be a loss for her after all? Especially since this could significantly and quickly boost her favorability rating. Lu Chaoqing quickly made up her mind, even if System 77 couldn’t provide a cheat to improve the protagonist’s technique.
Lu Chaoqing’s mind was filled with censored thoughts, completely unaware of the gradual change in Lin Chumu’s expression as she entered the room.
After pausing at the door for a few seconds, Lin Chumu suddenly strode forward and leaned in. She placed one hand next to Lu Chaoqing, instantly closing the distance between them to an extremely intimate level. Lu Chaoqing was surprised by her swift action and instinctively clutched her collar. Then, with a “click,” the dimness of the room was replaced by bright light.
The girl lying on the unfamiliar bed had only recently dried her hair. It was soft and draped over her shoulders. Her large, misty, bright deer-like eyes showed a mix of confusion and slight fear.
“This is my room.”
After a moment of silence in the air, Lin Chumu finally spoke softly, knitting her brows. However, upon seeing the girl’s genuine look of stunned confusion, her tone, which had initially been prepared with a belly full of anger, softened. It sounded more like a gentle reminder than a confrontation.
But in reality, she had already chalked up a point against Lu Chaoqing.
It was only her first day home; she had to tolerate the little green tea’s subtle and overt provocations.
When Lin Chumu leaned over just now, Lu Chaoqing had thought she was coming to kiss her and instantly closed her eyes in fear. It wasn’t until the intense light hit her retina, replacing the darkness, that she belatedly realized things were not unfolding as she had imagined.
When Lin Chumu tapped her shoulder and pointed in this direction earlier, did she misunderstand?
Lu Chaoqing outwardly met Lin Chumu’s gaze, but secretly, her hands under the covers were tightly gripping and pulling the sheet. Facing Lin Chumu’s eyes, which held no desire but only candor, she wished she could immediately find a hole to crawl into.
As time ticked by, a thin layer of sweat broke out on her fingers and feet, making Lu Chaoqing even more restless. The woman, looking down at her, continued to stand silently by the bedside, awaiting her answer. Although it was only half a minute, Lu Chaoqing, feeling hot all over, felt like half a lifetime had passed.
Seeing a subtle change in Lin Chumu’s expression, Lu Chaoqing hastily raised her hands, her beautiful, moist eyes blinking rapidly: “Of course I know. I just wanted to sleep with you, Sister.”
“I’m sorry for getting into your bed without permission. I thought your gesture just now meant you agreed…” Lu Chaoqing, having processed her thoughts, pouted, then, sensing a slight softening in the other’s demeanor, she smiled brightly and raised her voice, “Sister shouldn’t be angry, right?”
Lin Chumu: “…”
She had never met such a difficult person.
However, the little green tea’s soft and gentle expression lacked the aggression of someone trying to provoke her and, contrary to the impression of hypocrisy, was full of anticipation.
Lu Chaoqing’s eyes were very beautiful. The slight natural downward curve of her eyes always reminded people of an innocent, gazing puppy, giving off an unthreatening aura. Her focused expression, staring straight at Lin Chumu, didn’t make Lin Chumu feel offended; instead, it dissolved some of her initial surging hostility.
It was only when the girl, lying under the covers, obligingly moved aside, leaving enough space for one person, that Lin Chumu lifted the covers and got into bed next to Lu Chaoqing.
As soon as she adjusted the light to nightlight mode, Lin Chumu felt a smooth, cool hand grab her wrist under the blankets. The grip was very light, almost cautiously encircling her wrist with fingers and then gently covering it.
She instinctively turned her eyes towards Lu Chaoqing in alarm, only to see the little green tea yawn. The soft light gently blurred the contours of the girl’s face. Lu Chaoqing tugged her hand, pulling her a little closer. Her voice was full of flattery: “Sister, don’t stay so far away from me.”
Lin Chumu was silent for a moment, then cautiously shifted a little closer to her.
“By the way, Sister, what was your major in college?” Lu Chaoqing seized the opportunity to lean her head on Lin Chumu’s shoulder. Feeling the other person stiffen, she quietly pouted.
She had never been in the lesbian circle before, but she knew there was a type of person who could only be the active partner but refused to be touched by others. She didn’t expect Lin Chumu to be this type of lesbian. But since the two of them had already been intimate before, why was she avoiding her again and again?
What was the point of pretending?
The age difference between them was actually negligible. Lin Chumu was only one or two days older than the original body, which was why they were swapped at birth. But the vast difference in their personalities made it very easy for Lu Chaoqing to say “Sister.” Compared to Lin Chumu’s mature coldness, the original body and she preferred a cuter style.
The air was silent for a moment. Then Lu Chaoqing heard Lin Chumu state a major—it was surprisingly the exact same as hers: Dance.
“But I have already graduated,” Lin Chumu suddenly turned her head. The extremely close distance meant that their shallow breaths sprayed onto Lu Chaoqing’s cheek. In the darkness, she stared intently at Lu Chaoqing’s face. “I told you before, didn’t I forget?”
“N-No, I didn’t forget!” Lu Chaoqing couldn’t help but jump.
The original body’s memories had not been completely transferred to her. Especially before waking up, Lu Chaoqing didn’t know exactly what had happened. Everything was based on her own guesses, so naturally, she wasn’t sure if Lin Chumu had told her about her major.
Feeling that she had said the wrong thing, Lu Chaoqing was about to try and salvage the situation when she heard Lin Chumu say: “It seems I remembered incorrectly. I was in the Performing Arts department.”
Lu Chaoqing: “Yes, yes, Performing Arts!”
A fleeting chuckle sounded in the air.
Lin Chumu seemed to be in a good mood at the moment, but Lu Chaoqing’s nerves were already tense. She was afraid that the next question she asked would be something she couldn’t answer, throwing her into disarray, so she quickly ended the conversation with a “Good night.”
This woman was a bit unpredictable. Fortunately, she had an interview tomorrow, and once she passed, she could quickly become a trainee. Girl group trainees were notoriously busy before their debut, so meeting Lin Chumu would likely be impossible.
With this thought, a happy smile curved Lu Chaoqing’s lips.
“You are headstrong and unreasonable, occupying the magpie’s nest without repentance, always trying to go against me.”
“You are shameless. You knew I had a fiancé, yet you went to hook up with him. You are utterly unforgivable.”
Outside, heavy rain was pouring down.
Lin Chumu crossed her long legs, but the upturned corner of her mouth held no warmth, looking coldly at the helpless girl lying in the rain with a broken leg. The streetlights illuminated Lin Chumu’s superior features with a cold, star-like sharpness. She bent her fingers, flicking the ash from her cigarette onto her tailored suit. Her eyes were unfathomable.
The woman’s red lips parted: “This is the price for fighting me for a man, Lu Chaoqing.”
The last sentence directly shocked Lu Chaoqing awake from her dream.
It was a little after six in the morning. The sudden light of dawn filtered through the gap in the curtains, casting a long, slanted shadow. The various scenes from last night’s dream seemed to linger in her mind, making Lu Chaoqing look at Lin Chumu next to her with a strange expression.
The Lin Chumu in the “original novel’s plot” seemed vastly different from the one now.
In the “original novel’s plot,” the main conflict between the fake daughter, Lu Chaoqing, and the real daughter, Lin Chumu, stemmed from Lu Chaoqing’s fiancé, Jiang Yang. In reality, the engagement was supposed to belong to the real daughter. Lu Chaoqing had taken her place for many years, and Lin Chumu believed she shouldn’t steal her fiancé, while Lu Chaoqing was already deeply in love with Jiang Yang.
The existing conflict between the two, arising from their identity swap, was fiercely exacerbated by this man, eventually leading to a life-and-death struggle.
Lin Chumu acted decisively and viciously. After gaining control of the Lu Corporation, she summarily seized all of the fake daughter’s shares, eliminated all dissidents, and her iron-fisted methods earned her the submission of everyone in the corporation. In the end, Lu Chaoqing died miserably on the street, abandoned, and even her parents never came to inquire about her.
But that Jiang Yang was not a good man by any means; he was essentially a vicious social climber.
In the story, he was opportunistic, initially cozying up to Lu Chaoqing, but later, seeing Lin Chumu turn things around, he started seducing her, greatly provoking the already tense relationship between the two women.
After dating Lin Chumu, Jiang Yang continued to recognize many “sisters” and “younger sisters,” happily mingling with various women. When discovered, a few tearful pleas were enough to secure his forgiveness. After his behavior continued and he entangled with Lin Chumu for a long time, he was finally kicked out.
Lu Chaoqing, having dreamt of the plot, barely slept all night due to disgust.
Fortunately, 77 told her that the events in the original book had not actually happened, and it was still possible to change things now.
Lu Chaoqing moved her slightly sore arm. The subtle movement made the person beside her instantly open her eyes. Lin Chumu’s hair was still a little messy from sleep. They were so close that with a simple turn, they could feel each other’s breath.
Lin Chumu’s skin had a beautiful cool-white tone, but the skin from her neck down was meticulously covered by her clothing, with every button fastened, not exposing even a sliver. When her dark brown hair draped over her fair wrist, her entire posture wavered between the lines of asceticism and desire.
For some reason, Lu Chaoqing’s heart suddenly tightened. She instinctively avoided looking at her, softly said “Good morning,” and then escaped, pushing open Lin Chumu’s bedroom door. She happened to bump into Mother Lu, who was just coming downstairs, at the corner of the hallway.
The woman, who had just come down from upstairs, was momentarily stunned to see Lu Chaoqing coming out of Lin Chumu’s room, then beamed with joy.
She had worried that Qingqing might act spoiled and not get along with Lin Chumu, but she didn’t expect their relationship to progress so rapidly.
It was a good thing they were both daughters; pure friendship between girls really did develop quickly, Mother Lu thought with great satisfaction.
The company interview was at 9:00 AM, but she certainly couldn’t arrive exactly on time. Lu Chaoqing casually ate two slices of bread and planned to ask the driver to take her away immediately.
Yesterday, she had just transmigrated and was somewhat dazed and unclear. When she woke up this morning, she wanted to take a plane out of the city to escape her actions last night. To avoid Lin Chumu, Lu Chaoqing hadn’t even waited for everyone to eat breakfast together, but she was stopped just as she was about to leave.
“Where are you going?”
Lin Chumu, dressed in a formal suit, had a calm expression. Her exquisite features, set on a face that betrayed no emotion, gave her a cold, iceberg-like aloofness uncharacteristic of her age. The girl was immaculate, from her tie to the creases of her clothes. Stepping into high heels, her height dramatically towered over Lu Chaoqing by more than half a head.
Lin Chumu, suddenly appearing at the doorway, was like an audacious roadblock, interrupting Lu Chaoqing’s well-laid plans. Lu Chaoqing could only stare blankly, looking up slightly at the tall, straight figure standing in front of her.
“I’m going to the MT company for an interview.”
She was about to say, “We shouldn’t be going the same way,” when her path was blocked by Lin Chumu. As the name “MT company” barely left her lips, Lu Chaoqing saw the woman in front of her hook a prominent sea-blue employee badge from her cross-body bag with her long fingers.
Lin Chumu didn’t miss the look of surprise and disappointment that flashed in Lu Chaoqing’s eyes. The faint smile that had just appeared on her face cooled: “Were you simply thinking ‘we shouldn’t be going the same way,’ or were you trying to avoid me and didn’t want me to take you?”
