- Chapter 22 - Is This Still the Feng Wu They Know?
Zhou Funian was incredibly efficient. By that night, he had already organized all the details for the FOX New Member Selection Trials.
He reported the upcoming schedule to Feng Wu, and Tian Jiu, being very interested, leaned in to listen.
The selection trial was set to take place in three days. The rules were identical to the official trials, once again competing for the top three spots, with FOX providing the prize money: one million for first place, 500,000 for second, and 300,000 for third.
In addition, contestants who met FOX’s selection standards could secure a spot on the starting roster. There were only three spots available, and the classes were pre-determined: Defender, Healer, and Mage.
The rigid requirement was that all participants must have competed in the official Fengshen Selection Trials, as only those players were eligible to participate in the professional league.
“I’ll post the announcement on our official team account in a bit and find people to help promote it. We need to make sure every player in both the Upper and Lower Districts knows about this trial.” Zhou Funian said generously to Feng Wu, “I can pay the promotion fees out of my own pocket for now; if it’s not enough, I’ll ask you later.”
Tian Jiu clapped like a happy seal. “As expected of the Coach, you’re the best.”
Zhou Funian laughed, “When Feng Wu said he’d pay, you said you could help too. Now that I’m paying, you only give me verbal encouragement. Talk about double standards, little Tian Jiu.”
Feng Wu glanced at Tian Jiu with a half-smile.
“Of course,” Tian Jiu nodded honestly. “Because I like the Captain.”
“Oh~” Zhou Funian looked at Feng Wu meaningfully. The latter looked down and took a sip of water, remaining silent, though the corners of his mouth twitched upward uncontrollably.
“Alright, I’m done watching you two be all lovey-dovey. Back to work.” Zhou Funian downed the last of his coffee and headed up to the second floor, likely back to his independent office.

“Want to play a couple of rounds?” Feng Wu turned to Tian Jiu.
“Yes!”
“Let’s go.”
Tian Jiu happily hopped into his gaming pod. Once seated, his AI, Erguotou, prompted: “Master, connected to familiar device. Please select your destination.”
He looked at Feng Wu. “Captain, we’re doing a duo queue, right?”
“You don’t want to duo with me?” Feng Wu teased.
“No, no! I really want to!”
Feng Wu chuckled. “Can I finally add you as a friend this time, my cold little red panda?”
Tian Jiu scratched his face awkwardly. “Captain, why are you still bringing that up? Don’t be so petty.”
The “petty” Feng Wu laughed and sent a friend request. Once added, Tian Jiu immediately set a nickname for him: Super Amazing Captain.
“Change your ID,” Feng Wu said, sending him a name-change card worth 10,000. “Add the team prefix.”
Tian Jiu was familiar with the protocol and immediately changed his name. Seeing the golden “FOX” prefix before “Tian Jiu,” he was beaming with joy.
“We can start now, Captain.”
“Mhm. I’m going to start a livestream,” Feng Wu said.
Tian Jiu paused, peeking at Feng Wu. He said he isn’t short on money, but he clearly is, right? If he isn’t, why would he start a stream now?
“What’s wrong?” Feng Wu asked. “Don’t like streaming?”
“No, it’s not that.” Tian Jiu bit his lip and, under Feng Wu’s gaze, whispered, “Captain, if you’re short on money, I really do have some.”
He pulled up his digital ledger for the month. It showed the high profits from his two shops and the prize money from winning the trials. Looking at the long string of zeros, he was indeed a wealthy little Omega.
Feng Wu stared at him. “Are you trying to… provide for me?”
“C-can I?” Tian Jiu’s eyes lit up.
The same little money-grubber who compared prices across three shops just to buy a gaming pod was suddenly incredibly generous when it came to spending on his Captain. Talk about double standards indeed.
Feng Wu didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. “Why on earth do you think I’m poor?”
Tian Jiu puffed out his cheeks. “You’re starting a stream to earn tips…” He saw Feng Wu’s complicated expression and faltered. “Aren’t you?”
“I’m streaming because of a contract with the platform; I have to broadcast at least ten hours a month. Leaving the tips open is also a platform requirement.” Feng Wu explained helplessly. “You thought I was poor just because of that?”
Tian Jiu was still skeptical. “But they say you have to buy expensive custom suppressants every month, run the team, and…” He gestured at Feng Wu’s obviously expensive shirt and trousers. “Your clothes cost a lot, and you eat such exquisite food.”
Lunch and dinner today had cost almost half of Tian Jiu’s monthly food budget. It was painful for him, even if it was delicious.
“Starting to complain about my spending habits already?” Feng Wu raised an eyebrow. “Can you even afford to keep me?”
Tian Jiu nodded instantly. “I’ll work hard to earn money. I won’t let my Captain suffer!”
Feng Wu turned away, using all his strength not to laugh out loud. His little teammate was far too interesting.
“Captain?”
“Mhm.” Feng Wu calmed himself and shared his monthly income statement with Tian Jiu.
“!”
So many digits! Tian Jiu’s eyes blurred. He peeked at Feng Wu, his face slowly turning red. It was so embarrassing—his savings weren’t even a fraction of his Captain’s pocket change. Old Zhao and Li Zhen, stop spreading rumors!
Seeing his embarrassment, Feng Wu felt a pang of guilt and his heart softened. He gently rubbed the boy’s head. “That’s just the income. The expenses are high too. After everything, it’s probably similar to yours.”
Tian Jiu tilted his head. “Really?”
“Mhm.”
“I see.” Tian Jiu took Feng Wu’s hand off his head and held it, smiling. “I got it, Captain. Then let’s work hard together to play and make the big bucks.”
Feng Wu’s heart skipped a heavy beat. He smiled. “Deal.”

The Duo Queue Begins:
The moment the stream went live, thousands of people flooded in. Within a minute, the viewership hit 100,000.
“Hello everyone, I’m Feng Wu. Duo-queuing with Tian Jiu today.”
Tian Jiu waved as well. “Hi everyone, I’m FOX’s new member, Tian Jiu.”
Before the match started, the screen only showed the inventories and attribute panels. Even so, the fans were ecstatic.
[“Ugh, my baby is so soft! Let mommy hug you!”]
[“Duo of the two champions! Tech-fans are winning!”]
[“God Wu, please, tell my baby to start his own channel, mommy needs to give him allowance money QAQ!”]
Most of the comments were from “Mommy-fans” looking for their “Red Panda Son.” Tian Jiu peeked at the chat and saw the familiar “Mommy loves you” comments from his past life. He pouted. Why am I still attracting Mommy-fans? Is the way I charge in with a cannon not ‘Alpha’ enough? Was the shell that wiped out the opponent not cool?
Feng Wu looked at Tian Jiu’s screen and saw his inventory was pitifully empty—just a cannon and a pistol. Looking at his own bag, it was filled with countless weapons.
I need to get him some custom cannons soon, and maybe more animal-themed outfits, Feng Wu thought. But for now, he could give him something else.
“Tian Jiu.”
“Yes, Captain?”
“Come closer.”
Tian Jiu leaned over as Feng Wu enlarged his virtual screen. “Pick whatever you want.”
Tian Jiu was dazed. “You’re giving me weapons too, Captain?”
“‘Too’?” Feng Wu caught the keyword.
Tian Jiu pointed at his pistol. “Shadow gave me this one, but the condition was letting him pet the red panda ears.”
Feng Wu: “…” I see. “Captain, don’t you think he’s a bit of a pervert?” Tian Jiu whispered.
Feng Wu laughed. “A little bit.”

Since FOX’s new duo was streaming, members of other professional youth teams were watching in real-time. Naturally, Shadow heard the “pervert” comment.
Shadow: “…”
His teammates burst out laughing. “Hahaha! Shadow, you’re gonna be the death of me! The little red panda thinks you’re a creep!”
Shadow, with a headache, posted a pinned comment in Feng Wu’s chat: [I don’t believe I’m the only one who wants to pinch those ears.]
The chat exploded with “+1.”
Tian Jiu was shocked. “Captain, is that the real Shadow? He’s watching?”
“Mhm.” Feng Wu didn’t want to discuss the man. “I’ll take you to get custom cannons tomorrow. For now, pick some of my weapons for your bag.”
“Why?”
“A teammate of mine having an empty bag looks bad.”
Tian Jiu looked at him with a sweet smile. “How many can I pick, Captain?”
“As many as you want.”
“Really!” Tian Jiu immediately began browsing the weapon library and shamelessly picked over a dozen beautiful weapons of various classes.
“Enough?”
“For now,” Tian Jiu said mischievously.
Feng Wu couldn’t help but ruffle his hair again.
“Is this God Wu’s favoritism? Pick whatever you want from the vault?”
“Mommy-fans, look out! God Wu is definitely not the ‘gentle gentleman’ you think he is!”
Tian Jiu didn’t see the warnings. Even if he did, he wouldn’t care—he was already completely dazed by Feng Wu’s face. He equipped his trusty cannon and waited for the match to start.
“What do you want to see me play?” Feng Wu asked the chat, but he turned his head to look at Tian Jiu.
Tian Jiu said happily, “Can you play Swordsman, Captain?”
“Okay.”
Feng Wu decisively locked in Swordsman. The chat was speechless.
[“Is this still the Feng Wu we know? Where is the rebellious, stubborn Feng Wu who never listens to requests?”]
CP-fans were screaming with joy while Mommy-fans sighed. The “big bad wolf” was clearly trying to lure the little red panda into the den!
