The Entertainment Industry's Famous Fraud Couple - Chapter 4
Shen Guai’s head was heavy. If it were just heavy, that would be one thing, but it was also throbbing so much so that she wanted to rip it off and kick it onto a soccer field. Anywhere would be better than having it stay on her neck.
“Yes, Teacher Shen is right next to me… Sigh… She drank too much…”
Wutong held onto the swaying Shen Guai with her left hand while clutching a mountain of bags with her right, wishing she had six arms.
“Jinxi, when are you coming back?”
Wutong was going crazy. She was just an intern fresh out of college, and she had started her career on “Hell Mode.” If something happened to Shen Guai, she would be the one to blame. If a drunk Shen Guai got into an accident, she wouldn’t even be able to save her internship certificate.
“Jinxi… Jinxi?!”
Wutong shivered. Chaotic noise and Jinxi’s cries for help came through the phone.
“Jinxi?!”
What was going on? Had something happened to Jinxi? Before Wutong could ask, the sound on the other end cut off abruptly, leaving only the empty beep…beep.. of a disconnected line.
The call had been terminated.
“What do I do… what do I do?”
With a drunk celebrity on one hand and a colleague whose life was in question on the other, Wutong completely panicked.
“Qin… Teacher Qin?!”
Not far away, Qin Chaomu’s superior physique stood out in the crowd. Even though she was wearing a bucket hat and a mask, Wutong recognized her instantly.
Hearing Wutong’s voice, Qin Chaomu stiffened. Seeing it was Wutong and Shen Guai, she turned without hesitation and began walking in the opposite direction.
“Teacher Qin! Help!”
Wutong mustered her courage and shouted. At this moment, Qin Chaomu was like a beam of light in the darkness, illuminating the silent night and Wutong’s internship certificate.
“Tch”
Qin Chaomu’s brow furrowed. She looked around guiltily and, sure enough, saw people looking at her. She quickened her pace.
“Teacher Qin! Teacher Qin Chaomu! Help me!”
Wutong didn’t care about life or death anymore; she was doomed either way. Thinking Qin Chaomu hadn’t heard her, she screamed even louder.
“I f***ing…”
Qin Chaomu sighed helplessly, tossed her hair back with a flourish, crossed her arms, and slowly walked back, wearing her trademark fake smile. “Oh, what a coincidence!”
Wutong was officially on Qin Chaomu’s blacklist.
“Teacher Qin, please help! Can you help me get Teacher Shen back to the hotel? I have something very, very urgent to handle!”
Without waiting for a response, Wutong thrust Shen Guai into Qin Chaomu’s arms.
“Huh?”
Qin Chaomu stared blankly at the completely wasted Shen Guai in her arms. She pulled her bucket hat lower and cursed under her breath.
“Shen Guai? Really drunk?”
Qin Chaomu disgustedly pushed away Shen Guai’s head, which kept trying to snuggle into her, and turned her face away.
“She’s just drunk, not dying… She’s a grown adult. If I leave her here, nothing should happen, right?”
Qin Chaomu muttered to herself, looking skeptically at the person in her arms. She nodded, pried Shen Guai’s hands off her neck, and took two steps back.
As soon as she retreated, Shen Guai wobbled and slumped to the ground.
“Hey?! Are you trying to frame me? Looking for a reason to put me on the trending blacklist?”
Qin Chaomu pulled a wet wipe from her bag and began scrubbing her hands and neck frantically.
“I didn’t touch you. If you get a bump or a bruise, I’m not responsible. Besides, your assistant will be back in a bit…”
Qin Chaomu took a picture of Shen Guai, intending to send it to Wutong, only to realize she didn’t have Wutong’s contact info.
She waved it off. “Why do I care? Qin Chaomu, don’t be too kind…”
“Ah!”
Just as she was about to turn away, a small white figure darted past her feet, small and fluffy. If there was anything in this world that terrified Qin Chaomu, it was cats.
“Stupid cat! Ah!”
Qin Chaomu almost jumped out of her skin. The little white stray didn’t seem to notice, it stopped its urban exploration and curiously studied Shen Guai sitting on the ground. Perhaps the kitten felt that Shen Guai was just as pitiful as itself.
“Kitty… Yay! A kitty…”
Shen Guai’s unfocused eyes suddenly sharpened. She scrambled up from the ground as if she had found treasure.
“Shen Guai! If you dare touch that ugly cat, you’re going to die a miserable death!”
Qin Chaomu was scared out of her wits. But who could resist a big eyed kitten meowing at them?
Shen Guai ignored the warning. In her drunken state, she didn’t even recognize Qin Chaomu. Her only thought was that there was a cat in front of her, and she was going to take it home.
The kitten cooperated, jumping onto Shen Guai’s lap and rubbing its large ears against the back of her hand. Shen Guai giggled at the sensation, letting out a small hiccup.
“Idiot,” Qin Chaomu muttered, her expression dark. “Go to hell with your ugly cat.”
As if the cat understood the insult, it jumped down. Seeing this, Shen Guai tried to scramble up but stumbled… falling straight into Qin Chaomu’s arms.
“Damn it! Watch where you’re going!”
Less than a meter away, a delivery driver on an electric scooter began shouting. “Middle of the night and you’re acting out an idol drama? Do you want to die?!”
The driver cursed as he cranked the throttle to the max, he was about to be late.
Shen Guai looked at Qin Chaomu in confusion, Qin Chaomu looked at her speechlessly. This time, Shen Guai hadn’t lunged for her. Qin Chaomu had grabbed her. If she hadn’t, Shen Guai would currently be in a battle with the scooter’s front tire.
“Is your brain made of mush? Do you want to die?”
Qin Chaomu dragged Shen Guai back to the sidewalk, grabbing the back of her neck like she was picking up a kitten.
“But… the kitty… it’ll get hit by a car…”
Shen Guai bit her lip until it almost bled, her voice soft and childish.
“But the kitty will get hit by a car~” Qin Chaomu mocked her tone, hands on her hips. “Are you drunk or just naturally stupid? It’s a cat! How would it get hit by a car?”
“Fool. Moron. Brat. You’re so childish.”
Shen Guai filtered out the verbal attacks. She turned her head, staring blankly at the white kitten leaping around the middle of the road. She shook her head. “No… it’s too dangerous…”
“Heh.”
Qin Chaomu laughed out of pure frustration. “I’ve lived all these years and never seen a cat get hit by a car. Can you just be good for a second?”
Shen Guai shook her head dizzily and tried to walk back into the street.
“Tch…”
Qin Chaomu licked her dry lips and raised an eyebrow. The next second, she scooped Shen Guai up, hooking her arms under Shen Guai’s legs so she was clinging to her, and carried her to a corner of the hotel wall.
She let go, and Shen Guai slumped against the wall, staring up at her with wide, blurry eyes.
With a soft sigh, Qin Chaomu crouched down, using her body and the corner of the wall to box Shen Guai in so she couldn’t run off.
“If you can’t drink, don’t. Who are you trying to impress?”
Qin Chaomu rolled her eyes. She felt like Shen Guai was a punishment sent from heaven perhaps because she wasn’t a vegetarian.
“But… what if the kitty gets hit?”
“What if you get hit?”
Qin Chaomu irritably spun the ring on her thumb. she was annoyed by Shen Guai’s constant mumbling and the smell of alcohol clinging to her.
“No…”
“You” Qin Chaomu took a deep breath, leaning her head back. “Let go! Don’t hug me!”
“Ah! Shen Guai… you idiot! You little brat!”
Shen Guai didn’t let go; instead, she reached out and pinched Qin Chaomu’s cheeks, squeezing them gently.
Qin Chaomu was stunned. In her entire life, since being pinched by a strange aunt at age three, she had never been treated like this.
“Open your eyes and look at who I am!” Qin Chaomu’s brow drew tight, her dark eyes flashing with a cold, murderous intent.
This was her trump card. Qin Chaomu was known for being erratic and uncompromising, everyone was afraid of her. Except… a drunk Shen Guai.
“Little kitten, you’re so cute when you’re angry. Come on, come home with big sister…”
After saying this, she planted two wet kisses on Qin Chaomu’s cheeks, leaving her face covered in saliva.
A despondent Qin Chaomu looked up at the sky and sighed. Trembling, she pulled a vape from her bag and took a silent puff.
“Little kitten, what’s wrong? Are you unhappy? Hmm?”
Qin Chaomu ignored her and took another puff.
“Even you won’t talk to me. Tell me, is my life… a total failure?”
Shen Guai sadly rested her head on Qin Chaomu’s knee. She began pulling at the grass on the ground, plucking it and tossing the blades onto Qin Chaomu’s dress.
Qin Chaomu just gave a faint, weary smile. She couldn’t even remember what anger felt like anymore.
“How could I be so stupid… nobody likes me…”
Qin Chaomu chuckled. “Self-awareness. Maybe you’re not entirely beyond hope.”
“And my kissing is bad… and my lips are dry…”
“…Stop talking.”
Qin Chaomu did not want to reminisce about their “sweet moment.”
“Little kitten…”
Shen Guai lifted her face, pouting and blinking her large, tear filled eyes at Qin Chaomu. “Is my kissing really that bad?”
Qin Chaomu helplessly touched her earlobe and looked away, only catching Shen Guai in her peripheral vision. “You… look alright, I guess…”
“Huh?”
Shen Guai’s brain had clearly stalled; she couldn’t understand what Qin Chaomu was saying.
“What’s that sound?” Shen Guai perked up her ears, her watery eyes darting around. She felt her own chest, paused in thought, then shook her head in self-denial. She leaned forward, resting her heavy head against Qin Chaomu’s chest.
“Little kitten, is that your heart beating?”
“Why is your heart… beating so fast?”
Qin Chaomu’s breath hitched. She slowly closed her eyes, licked her lip, and her throat moved as she swallowed, but she said nothing.
“Why is… your heartbeat so different from mine…”
Shen Guai stared blankly into Qin Chaomu’s eyes, only to find that Qin Chaomu didn’t dare look back at her.
After a long silence, Qin Chaomu finally spoke: “Because I have sinus arrhythmia.”
