The Eldest Lady always wants to have a double O Relationship with her old enemy - Chapter 20
It was obvious how low the alcohol tolerance was for the usually teetotaler Miss Shen. After just one glass of fruit wine, her vision began to blur.
All the noise around her faded away, and the only thing becoming clearer was the lingering scent of pomelo and rum from her right.
It was so faint it was barely perceptible, yet it seemed to have a magical pull, drawing her closer.
Tang Yanzhao, having finished her meal, was wiping her hands with a wet wipe when she felt a weight on her shoulder. Instinctively, she raised her shoulder to give her support.
Drunk and disoriented, Shen Jianxi followed her instinct and leaned towards the source of the scent, rubbing her head lightly against Tang Yanzhao’s shoulder.
Tang Yanzhao’s brow twitched. Her gaze fell on the empty glass on the table, then moved to a flustered Jiang Lan.
“Hah,” Jiang Lan said, “I knew her tolerance was low, but I didn’t think it was this bad. The first time I drank, I finished two bottles of beer.”
Tang Yanzhao’s expression was grim, but on her already serious and elegant face, it seemed to make no difference.
“Let’s call it a night. Can you still walk?” Ye Tao, who hadn’t been drinking, was the first to speak.
Jiang Lan quickly finished the last drops in her cup, her cheeks flushed, and said, “Let’s go.”
Ye Tao saw her state and the corner of her mouth twitched. She walked around the table to Jiang Lan and said to Tang Yanzhao, “Can you take Xi Xi home? It’s not far from here.”
Tang Yanzhao hummed in agreement and took Shen Jianxi’s shoulders, asking softly, “Can you still hear me?”
Shen Jianxi suddenly looked up, her blurry eyes locking onto Tang Yanzhao. She let out a silly laugh and said, “Are you stupid? My ears are here!”
She reached out to pinch Tang Yanzhao’s ear, but the alcohol had scrambled her coordination. She ended up just grabbing Tang Yanzhao’s right earlobe and wiggling it.
Seeing this, Tang Yanzhao knew that reasoning with her would be a waste of time.
She helped Shen Jianxi to her feet and said, “We’ll be going now.”
Jiang Lan waved her arm high like a windshield wiper, shouting, “Bye-bye!”
Ye Tao, who had to duck to avoid being hit by Jiang Lan’s arm, nodded to Tang Yanzhao, “Bye-bye.”
Fang Xing, in his wheelchair, also gave them a polite farewell smile.
Tang Yanzhao almost had to half-carry Shen Jianxi out of the noisy night market.
Under the dim, quiet streetlights, Shen Jianxi hadn’t walked far before she started to act up, whimpering while clinging to Tang Yanzhao’s arm.
Tang Yanzhao had no choice but to stop and patiently soothe her, “What’s wrong?”
Shen Jianxi’s eyes narrowed into slits, and she pouted, sliding down Tang Yanzhao’s arm. Tang Yanzhao quickly bent down with her, grabbing her to keep her from falling.
They were almost knee to knee. Tang Yanzhao leaned forward, her arms firmly holding her to prevent her from toppling over.
“What’s wrong? Are you not feeling well?” Tang Yanzhao asked again, her voice so gentle it was like a whisper in the quiet night breeze.
Shen Jianxi shook her head, then after a pause, nodded.
Tang Yanzhao patiently pressed on, “Are you feeling well or not?”
“I’ve turned into a balloon,” Shen Jianxi rested her chin on Tang Yanzhao’s knees. Her cat-like eyes looked up at her, round and dark, with a shallow glint of starlight shimmering in the warm yellow light.
Tang Yanzhao, for once, let out a soft laugh, “Why?”
“I’m all floaty. It feels so soft when I walk. I’m on a cloud.”
Her logic was completely gone, but Tang Yanzhao still understood what she meant.
Her consciousness was muddled from the alcohol, she was completely disoriented, and her steps were unsteady. It felt like she was floating in the air, without any solid ground beneath her feet, just like a balloon.
If Tang Yanzhao hadn’t been there, Shen Jianxi would have tripped and fallen flat on her face.
“Let’s go back and have Aunt Zhou make some hangover soup,” Tang Yanzhao said, preparing to pull her up.
Shen Jianxi, seeing this, quickly held onto Tang Yanzhao’s arm tightly. “No, you have to hold me tight, or I’ll fly away.”
The complete trust Shen Jianxi showed filled Tang Yanzhao with a great sense of satisfaction.
In her cold, lonely world, a hot sun was rushing toward her, and the darkness had nowhere to hide. At that moment, the light became tangible, and she had caught it.
With a slight tremble, Tang Yanzhao’s fingers tucked a strand of Shen Jianxi’s hair behind her ear. Her heart was a sea of ripples. “I’m holding you.”
Suddenly, Shen Jianxi let go and sat down on the ground, clutching her chest and coughing.
Tang Yanzhao immediately knelt down, cupping her face in her hands and urgently asked, “Are you not feeling well?”
Shen Jianxi’s mouth turned into a pitiful frown. She threw herself into Tang Yanzhao’s arms, burying her head in her neck. “It hurts, Zhaozhao, it hurts so much.”
Tears instantly fell onto Tang Yanzhao’s skin, burning like fire.
“Where does it hurt?”
Tang Yanzhao tried to pull her away to check, but Shen Jianxi refused to let go. She just kept repeating that she wasn’t feeling well and that it hurt, without saying where.
Tang Yanzhao didn’t dare to delay. She had no choice but to wrap her arms around Shen Jianxi’s knees, and with surprising ease, she lifted her into her arms. She even bounced her up slightly to get a better grip before striding towards the Shen family home.
Aunt Zhou had just finished tidying up and was about to go to her room to rest when she ran into a hurrying Tang Yanzhao who had just entered the courtyard.
“What happened to Miss?”
Tang Yanzhao’s breathing was a little heavy, but her voice was still steady and strong. “Aunt Zhou, please call a doctor.”
“Yes, yes, of course.”
Tang Yanzhao carried Shen Jianxi with familiar ease to her room.
The room was decorated in a cream-colored style, and the bed was crowded with various sizes of cute stuffed animals. She placed Shen Jianxi on the bed, and after moving a little yellow bear aside, she gently set her head on the pillow.
Tang Yanzhao was about to get up, but Shen Jianxi, despite her drunkenness, had a surprising amount of strength. Caught off guard, Tang Yanzhao was pulled by the neck and nearly fell on top of her.
Tang Yanzhao braced herself with her hands on either side of Shen Jianxi’s head, looking down at her. She took one of her hands and held it, “Xi Xi.”
Shen Jianxi’s eyes fluttered open a little, and she replied with a sniffle, “Hmm?”
“Let go.”
As a young lady, Shen Jianxi had every right to be willful and unreasonable. Instead of letting go, she pulled Tang Yanzhao even closer. Their noses were almost touching, and their breaths mingled in the small space between them.
“No.”
Tang Yanzhao pursed her lips. “The doctor is coming.”
“I don’t want to.” Shen Jianxi wiggled her head against Tang Yanzhao’s neck, her fingerpads unconsciously rubbing against Tang Yanzhao’s gland through the suppressant patch.
“Then what do you want?” Tang Yanzhao’s neck was starting to ache from the awkward position.
Shen Jianxi’s eyelashes fluttered. “Call me ‘baby’.”
“What?” Tang Yanzhao thought she was hearing things and instinctively asked for clarification.
Shen Jianxi’s mind was consumed by the intimate moment she’d witnessed between the couple who had left earlier. She was confident she would be able to hear Tang Yanzhao say that word, but it wasn’t supposed to be now.
But perhaps it was the provocation, or the alcohol, but she had to hear it now.
“I said, call me ‘baby’,” Shen Jianxi ordered brazenly, though her soft tone had no real authority.
Tang Yanzhao’s ears began to burn red. She swallowed uncomfortably, and her fingers subconsciously tightened, wrinkling the innocent bedsheet.
Shen Jianxi turned her head and coughed lightly, but the grip on Tang Yanzhao’s neck didn’t loosen. Once she had calmed down a little, she asked again, “Just once, okay?”
Tang Yanzhao’s heart pounded, her body temperature rose, and her arms began to feel numb. After a long moment of hesitation, she heard the sound of hurried footsteps at the door. Her gaze fell on Shen Jianxi’s face, and she clenched her jaw before whispering, “Baby.”
