The Doomed Beloved Who Just Wants to Slack Off - Chapter 8
Jiang Yi leaned against the doorframe, her gaze fixed on the group of students in the center of the classroom. They glanced at her covertly before lowering their voices to whisper among themselves, but no one dared to speak as loudly as before.
The gauze taped to the corner of her eye and the band-aids covering her face made Jiang Yi look every bit the delinquent. Yet, she softened her tone and asked again, “So, no one wants to ask me anything?”
The classroom fell into another heavy silence.
Jiang Yi waited a moment, then dropped her arms and strode directly toward the desk by the back door. “If no one has the guts to ask, then next time, you’d better not let me catch you discussing me over these things. I don’t like your behind-the-back whispers, it’s a huge insult to me.”
She moved through the crowd like a sharp blade, her entire presence radiating an intimidating edge. The students instinctively stepped back, clearing a path for her.
They watched as Jiang Yi reached her seat, pulled out the chair, and sat down.
The sweet-faced class monitor glanced at Jiang Yi, who stood out so starkly from the rest, bit her lip lightly, and struggled to hold back her curiosity. Finally, she mustered her courage and walked over to Jiang Yi, calling out softly, “Jiang Yi…”
“Hmm?” Jiang Yi lifted her eyes and glanced at the monitor indifferently, a faint smile playing on her lips. “Something you want to ask?”
“Yes, yes, yes!” The monitor nodded vigorously, and a group of students gathered around. “It’s about what Song Yi said Are you really.”
Jiang Yi raised an eyebrow. “A love child?”
The girls around her nodded eagerly.
Jiang Yi chuckled, then her expression turned serious. “By the broad definition, yes, I am. I’m a non-marital child, my two mothers weren’t married. I was raised by my mom, and when my mom and my other mother were together, they were both single. It was a normal relationship, nothing to be ashamed of.”
Hearing Jiang Yi speak so openly about her background, one of the classmates nearby gained a bit of confidence and asked curiously, “So, you’re not the kind of love child born from an affair, right?”
Jiang Yi nodded. “Exactly. To be precise, I’m the non-marital child of a single woman.”
As the saying goes, where there’s a first, there’s a second. Seeing their classmate’s bravery, the other girls chimed in, “We heard you beat up Song Yi and her gang in the cafeteria. Have you trained or something?”
Jiang Yi smiled. “A few years of sanda.”
The students gasped in surprise, then began chattering about Song Yi. “You’re new, so you might not know, but Song Yi is pretty notorious at our school.”
Jiang Yi looked puzzled. “How so?”
The classmates eagerly explained, “Her family is super rich the school belongs to them. So she often bullies students who don’t have much backing.”
“Things like pulling hair, spilling drinks on skirts, tearing up test papers, blocking bathroom stalls, she does that stuff all the time. She has a bunch of followers who help her out.”
Jiang Yi frowned and clicked her tongue in disdain. “Is she in elementary school? How childish.”
The class monitor pushed through the crowd and sat down in the seat opposite Jiang Yi. Adjusting her glasses, she said, “She’s bullied quite a few classmates, has a foul mouth, is arrogant, and even harassed our school belle who’s an omega.”
A classmate quickly added, “That’s Qin Miaomiao from Class A. I heard their families are considering an arranged marriage, but Qin Miaomiao actually likes Jiang Xixi..”
Jiang Yi suddenly recalled the omega who had confronted Song Yi in the restroom and wondered if that girl was Qin Miaomiao.
“Exactly!” The class monitor turned her chair around and leaned in to gossip with Jiang Yi. “In short, she’s a really unpleasant person. But since you hit her today, you’ll probably.”
Jiang Yi thought for a moment and chuckled lightly. “Will I get expelled?” After all, fighting was a serious offense, and if she were expelled, it would significantly reduce the time she had to spend with Jiang Xixi.
The class monitor frowned. “It’s a bit uncertain but since you were able to transfer here, your family must have some influence. Students who transfer to our school usually come from powerful backgrounds. So, which Jiang family are you from?”
All the classmates looked at her with curiosity.
Jiang Yi found it amusing. “Just the Jiang from Jiang Yi.”
She leaned back, resting her hands behind her head, and rocked her chair slowly, teasingly saying, “I don’t have any special background. I’ll probably get expelled and have to pay compensation. Looks like our time together is short-lived just fleeting classmates.”
Her nonsense didn’t convince anyone. The sturdy PE monitor leaned over his friend and asked Jiang Yi, “Don’t lie to us. You must have some connection to Jiang Xixi’s family, right? She defended you earlier, and she never gets involved in other people’s business! Are you both from the Jiang family?”
Other classmates chimed in, nodding. “Yeah, you share the same surname. What’s your relationship?”
Surrounded by the crowd, Jiang Yi sighed helplessly. “I have no connection to her. We’re not close. Maybe she was just standing up for what’s right?”
A classmate whispered in protest, “Nonsense! If you’re not close, why did she bring you water during PE class the other day? I saw it.”
“Right, a lot of people saw it.”
The classmates chattered away, making Jiang Yi’s head spin. She hadn’t expected high school girls to be so energetic and gossipy.
Reflecting on it, Jiang Yi realized it was probably because Jiang Xixi was so famous anyone associated with her would attract attention.
Jiang Yi sighed and said seriously, “We’re really not close. I swear to heaven.”
As soon as she finished speaking, the surrounding classmates suddenly fell silent for some reason. Just then, a few knocks sounded at the back door. In that instant, everyone gathered around Jiang Yi turned their eyes toward the back door.
Jiang Yi followed their gaze and looked up to see Jiang Xixi standing at the doorway. Her pupils contracted sharply.
What was this? Speak of the devil?
Jiang Xixi stood silhouetted against the light at the door, her gaze fixed on Jiang Yi. Whether it was an illusion or not, Jiang Yi felt as if Jiang Xixi were bathed in a golden glow, so dazzling that she couldn’t help but squint.
Was this the protagonist’s aura? Jiang Yi thought to herself, silently rocking her chair and leaning back a little further.
The once noisy classroom had now fallen silent. Jiang Sixian glanced at Jiang Yi, pursed her lips, and spoke: “Jiang Yi.”
Jiang Yi couldn’t figure out what she wanted and tilted her head slightly, asking, “What’s up?”
Jiang Sixian swept her gaze over the classmates gathered around Jiang Yi, hesitated for a moment, and said, “Can you come out for a moment?”
Jiang Yi warily dragged her chair back half a step, asking nervously, “What for?”
The classmates nearby subtly shifted their gazes between the two, radiating intense curiosity. Jiang Sixian clearly noticed this and sighed, saying, “Just come out for a moment.”
Jiang Yi was particularly resistant to being in the same space as Jiang Sixian. She cleared her throat and said very seriously, “If you have something to say, can’t you say it here?”
Her attitude was so unapproachable that even the class monitor couldn’t stand it and couldn’t help but poke her.
Jiang Yi turned her head and glanced at the class monitor.
The class monitor glanced at the cool and aloof Jiang Sixian, cleared her throat, and whispered into Jiang Yi’s ear, urging her, “Go on, Jiang Sixian came specifically to find you.”
Not just the class monitor, but the other students also fixed their eyes on Jiang Yi, with a hint of frustration: “Jiang Yi, hurry up.”
Jiang Yi felt they were like innocent high school students, overly excited at the rare sight of a couple meeting, just waiting for some gossip.
Jiang Yi didn’t want to follow their lead. She cleared her throat and stared firmly at Jiang Sixian, her expression clearly saying, “I’m not buying it.”
For some reason, Jiang Sixian felt she could see the word “stubborn” written all over Jiang Yi’s face. Jiang Sixian sighed softly and replied coolly, “My mom said she wants me to go home with you tonight.”
Jiang Yi nodded, “Mm… but I have to go to the office after school to explain what happened today, so you can go back first.”
After a moment’s thought, Jiang Yi added, “I’ll have Sister Qin wait for you at the school gate.”
Jiang Sixian paused, then nodded under everyone’s intense gazes. After thinking for a moment, she asked another question, “Why did you get into a fight today?”
Jiang Yi thought to herself, We’re not that close, why are you asking so many questions?
Life wasn’t easy. Jiang Yi sighed, “Fights usually start over arguments and minor conflicts, right? What else could it be? Anyway, it has nothing to do with you.”
Her attitude was too cold, and with so many people around, Jiang Sixian couldn’t press further. She finally asked one last question, “How are your injuries? Do you need to go to the hospital?”
Jiang Yi pointed at her own face, unconcerned, and said, “It’s all taken care of, no big deal. Class is about to start, you should go back.”
She dismissed Jiang Sixian as if she were some kind of big shot. Seeing that Jiang Yi was truly fine, Jiang Sixian nodded and turned to enter the classroom.
Jiang Yi sat in her chair, watching her retreating figure from afar. Only after she had gone did the class monitor poke Jiang Yi again, saying with deep frustration, “That’s Jiang Sixian! How can you be so cold to her?”
Not just her, but the other students also turned their criticism toward Jiang Yi: “Didn’t you say you two weren’t close? Why did she come specifically to find you? And she was concerned about your injuries, and you’re going home together!”
Jiang Yi had no choice but to explain, “We really aren’t that familiar. I only met her a week ago. Our families live close by, and our parents know each other.”
The classmates understood and said in unison, “Oh, so you’re old family friends.”
Jiang Yi shrugged. “If you want to interpret it that way, there’s no problem with that.”
Soon, the class bell rang, and the students gathered around Jiang Yi scattered like a swarm.
Jiang Yi, aching all over from the earlier scuffle, listened to the afternoon lessons with a troubled mind. She endured until the end of the school day.
When the dismissal bell rang, Jiang Yi stuffed all the day’s homework into her backpack, grabbed it, and slipped out of the classroom through the back door.
Just as she stepped outside, she saw Jiang Sixian standing by the railing, holding her backpack with both hands, quietly watching her.
Jiang Yi froze for a moment before finding her voice. “Didn’t I say I was going to the administration office? Aren’t you going home?”
Jiang Sixian glanced at her and said softly, “I’m heading to the administration office too. Let’s walk together.”
With that, Jiang Sixian turned and started walking ahead, backpack in hand.
Jiang Yi stared at her slender, upright figure for a moment before tightening her grip on her own backpack and following her out.
