Chapter 6: The First Wisp of Spring Breeze
He Baizhou had absolutely no intention of playing along with Gao Yiwen’s performance. With a cold expression, she pulled her hand back.
In this state, she finally looked normal again.
Gao Yiwen let go of her hand, sat down opposite her, and stared at her with sharp eyes. “Honestly, what on earth is going on with you?” Was the blow of Shao Qingran getting married really so great that she had lost her sanity?
That would be even worse than drowning her sorrows in alcohol!
He Baizhou didn’t have many friends, but those who stayed by her side were all people she could trust with her heart. Thus, she had no intention of hiding it. She looked down at the earring in her palm and said, “I met someone at the wedding.”
Even now, just mentioning that person caused a surge of amazement to rise within her.
Though it was their first meeting, perhaps because the previous twenty-odd years of her life had been too bland, that person’s appearance felt like a vivid painting—incredibly striking and profoundly moving.
Gao Yiwen’s eyes lit up the moment she saw this expression. She pressed for details impatiently, “Who is it? Male or female?”
“You seem very happy?” He Baizhou’s expression was somewhat strange.
Gao Yiwen gave a secret roll of her eyes. “Of course I’m happy for you!” From He Baizhou’s expression, it was obvious what was happening. Gao Yiwen wanted to set off firecrackers to celebrate. She slapped the table. “Isn’t it just falling for someone else? What’s so hard to say?”
“…” He Baizhou looked up at her. “Don’t you think it’s too fast?”
“How is it fast?” Gao Yiwen said righteously. “The news of Shao Qingran’s marriage was announced months ago, right? Even though you liked her before, you aren’t the type to break up a family. Knowing she was getting married, you definitely gave up. Calculating it that way, it’s been months. Isn’t it normal for you to fall for someone else? It’s better than pining for someone else’s wife, isn’t it?”
He Baizhou was almost persuaded by her twisted logic.
The problem was, while Shao Qingran had announced the wedding months ago, she only met Shao Peiran yesterday!
“So what if you only met yesterday? Is a person not allowed to fall in love at first sight?” Gao Yiwen snorted at her reasoning. “Didn’t you fall for Shao Qingran at first sight too? Why, is this new person being discriminated against now?”
It was obvious she was desperate to solidify the fact that He Baizhou had moved on.
Well, it wasn’t that Gao Yiwen had a prejudice against Shao Qingran, but based on the few times she had met the woman, she felt she was a high-level “Green Tea” (manipulator).
She had kept He Baizhou hooked for so many years; on one hand, firmly stating “we are just friends,” while on the other, constantly showing concern to make He Baizhou feel like she was the most special. Consequently, He Baizhou couldn’t let go and willingly became a fish in her pond.
So, hearing that she was getting married, Gao Yiwen was practically cheering.
She didn’t know why Shao Qingran had “lost her mind” and chosen to settle down, but seeing He Baizhou finally escape her clutches was a wonderful thing.
To find out there was a “buy one, get one free” service where she actually took an interest in someone else at the wedding—this was a total surprise. Gao Yiwen was terrified that He Baizhou’s moral compass would be too high, making her feel like she was betraying Shao Qingran and thus letting go of a great opportunity. So, Gao Yiwen put all her effort into brainwashing her.
“Think about it, you went to the wedding with the intention of blessing Shao Qingran, right?” she asked, staring at He Baizhou.
He Baizhou nodded. Even before meeting Shao Peiran, she hadn’t thought of doing anything; her logic was clear—Xu Chengyue was the most suitable person for Shao Qingran.
She just felt a bit… a listlessness she couldn’t quite describe.
“Exactly! So, after you offered your blessings to the newlyweds, you suddenly met your destiny. What is that? That’s an arrangement from heaven! A little earlier and you wouldn’t have given up on Shao Qingran yet, so you might not have felt anything even if you saw her. A little later after the wedding ended, and the two of you might never have crossed paths again. But now, you just happened to meet—this is fate ordained by heaven!” Gao Yiwen spoke the last sentence with ironclad certainty.
Although He Baizhou felt she was talking nonsense and using fallacious arguments, she couldn’t help but be touched by the phrase “a little earlier, a little later.”
She tightened her grip on the earring and lowered her eyes. “Actually, we don’t really have any connection now.”
“Hmm? What happened?” Gao Yiwen was determined to be the wingman today. Seeing He Baizhou’s sorrowful face, she pressed for more information.
“She has lived abroad for a long time and flew back early this morning,” He Baizhou said.
“Pfft… I thought it was something major!” Gao Yiwen slapped the table hard. “Is abroad that far? You grew up abroad yourself, and aren’t you flying all over the world every other day now? If you truly want to meet, there’s always a way.”
If nothing else, when He Baizhou liked Shao Qingran, did they see each other every day? Please, they didn’t even see each other twice a month!
It had to be said that this attitude was very encouraging.
It felt like every difficulty, once analyzed by her, was no big deal.
Seeing her expression soften, Gao Yiwen struck while the iron was hot. “So, where is she settled?”
“I heard it’s Australia.”
“S City to Sydney is only about eight-plus hours.” As He Baizhou’s assistant, Gao Yiwen practically had a flight schedule in her head. “You’ll be there after a nap.”
She originally wanted to mention that Australia had been a British colony a hundred years ago, but thought better of it, feeling it was inappropriate to bring up at this moment. Even so, He Baizhou was influenced by her nonchalant attitude; it was as if Australia really wasn’t that far away.
When she thought about it, it was true—flying direct from S City to London took twelve hours. Compared to that, Australia felt quite close.
“Oh, right!” Gao Yiwen suddenly clapped her hands and stood up abruptly. The commotion was so loud that He Baizhou couldn’t help but look up at her. Gao Yiwen leaned over the desk, saying excitedly, ” I just remembered, there seems to be a pharmaceutical R&D summit being held in Australia in a couple of days.”
Usually, Gao Yiwen and a Vice Director would attend this kind of conference together.
But now, seeing He Baizhou’s eyes suddenly light up, Gao Yiwen asked with confidence, “You haven’t attended this kind of conference before, have you? Want to come along and check it out?”
He Baizhou was indeed tempted.
Actually, Australia was huge—nearly eight million square kilometers of land, not much smaller than China. How could she possibly run into her just by going to a conference? But even if it was just a slim hope, He Baizhou couldn’t help but feel moved.
At least, by standing on the same soil as her, the chances would be slightly higher.
Although her purpose for attending the conference was impure, considering she knew nothing about the other woman, trying to find her in this situation was like looking for a needle in a haystack. He Baizhou didn’t harbor high expectations. After arriving, she didn’t act alone but stayed with the Xinglin Hospital delegation.
At a summit like this, various pharmaceutical companies and high-end biomedical labs would announce their ongoing or upcoming drug projects. For a hospital, it was naturally a prime time for procurement.
Though Xinglin was a private hospital, its massive scale and comprehensive departments meant it had a huge annual consumption rate and staggering purchasing power. He Baizhou, the big boss, had always been willing to throw money at these things. Now that she had come in person, she spent money like water.
Money opening doors is effective anywhere; before long, many pharmaceutical and medical equipment companies were extending olive branches to them.
Gao Yiwen picked through the invitations. Xinglin Hospital had its own partners for most drugs and equipment and didn’t need to supplement them here. Coming to the summit was about making contact with cutting-edge developments, so she finally selected a few and decided to visit them.
“Let’s go to this one first.” The Vice Director flipped through them and quickly chose one. “Specialized medicine for rare diseases—it’s what we need most right now.”
Since Xinglin Hospital took the high-end route, they had to ensure they had what others didn’t, or be better than what others had. For specialized drugs like this, the more the better; that was the only way to establish their authority as a brand.
So, on the afternoon of the second day, He Baizhou followed the delegation into a meeting room.
The moment she entered and saw the figure standing by the window, her footsteps paused. Although it was only a view of her back, He Baizhou felt a strange sense of familiarity. Her heart rate suddenly accelerated, and she instinctively stepped toward her.
Gao Yiwen reached out to grab her but missed. Seeing her walk toward the window as if possessed, Gao Yiwen was stunned.
Looking at the person by the window, she couldn’t help but be shocked as well. “No way…” Although she kept talking about “fate ordained by heaven,” she had actually just been bluffing to encourage He Baizhou. Could it be that just by coming to a meeting, she had actually found the person?
He Baizhou quickly covered the distance of a few meters. But as she got closer, her footsteps became hesitant.
She was afraid that when the person turned around, it wouldn’t be the one she was looking for.
She hesitated for a moment before speaking uncertainly, “Shao Peiran?”
The person by the window turned around, revealing a face that was both familiar and strange. It was familiar because this face had been etched into He Baizhou’s mind for several days, and she had reviewed it constantly. It was strange because today, she looked very different from their last meeting.
She was wearing a well-fitted suit, and her seaweed-like hair was pinned high behind her head. Her makeup blurred her age, making her look professional and stern—not at all like the sweet and graceful impression she gave at the wedding.
He Baizhou was momentarily intimidated, just like the day she opened the door to the lounge, feeling as if she were intruding upon or offending her again.
But in the next moment, Shao Peiran recognized her, and her expression suddenly softened into a faint smile.
It was like the first wisp of spring breeze brushing over a snowy mountain—quiet and ripples-free, yet capable of melting all the ice.
