The Devil President's Delicate Wife (GL) - Chapter 5
After hanging up the phone, Mu Yun leaned back on the sofa. She couldn’t imagine how Lin Yushu would react upon hearing the news. She only knew it would be a devastating blow.
For now, all she could think about was how to keep it from Lin Yushu. She decided to take leave and take her on a vacation to distract her.
Qian Lele watched as both of them suddenly became people she barely recognized anymore. They both cared deeply about Lin Yueshu.
Lin Yueshu, the name made her think of He Cheng, the girl she had been pursuing for the past two months. It seemed He Cheng was very close to Lin Yueshu, and Qian Lele knew that He Cheng liked Lin Yueshu so much that no matter how hard she tried to win her over, He Cheng remained unmoved.
She tried calling He Cheng, but the phone went unanswered. She dialed again and again, losing count of how many times she tried, but the result was always the same, no answer.
Now Qian Lele was frantic. She feared something had happened to He Cheng and wanted to go find her. But the two people here were already in such a state that she didn’t know what to do.
Qian Lele walked over to Mu Yun and said, “Mu Mu, take Murong Qing home today and comfort her. I have something urgent to take care of, so I’ll leave first. Call me when you get home.” Right now, Mu Yun was the only one she could talk to. Murong Qing was in no state to listen.
“Alright, go ahead. I’ll take Murong home. Be careful on the road.” Mu Yun had seen the look on Qian Lele’s face and knew something serious had happened.
She had watched Qian Lele dialing the phone repeatedly, her hands trembling, yet the call never went through. She guessed it must be about He Cheng. He Cheng liked Lin Yueshu, this was something she knew well. Qian Lele often complained to her, saying He Cheng was stubborn, that no matter what she did, He Cheng just wouldn’t like her back.
Qian Lele left in a hurry, and Mu Yun looked at Murong Qing’s current state. She wondered when the three of them had ever felt so helpless before. They had grown up together, untouchable, wanting for nothing. Yet now, because of Lin Yueshu, all three of them had fallen into disarray.
Lin Yueshu had become their collective weak spot.
Another month passed. Murong Qing was so busy every day that she barely had time to eat. She had lost so much weight in just a month that she was almost unrecognizable.
Lin Yushu eventually found out the news. The shock made her faint, and she was hospitalized.
He Cheng, unable to accept the news of Lin Yueshu’s death, drowned herself in alcohol every day until she was hospitalized with a stomach hemorrhage.
Gu Fei was exhausted from taking care of both Lin Yushu and He Cheng in the hospital. Su Fuyin visited the three of them daily.
The news of Lin Yueshu’s accident had thrown all of them into chaos—some fell ill, others were worn out. Not a single one of them had a moment of proper rest.
Another month later, Lin Yushu and He Cheng were discharged from the hospital. It seemed as though everything had returned to calm, except no one dared mention Lin Yueshu. The mere mention of her name threatened to shatter the fragile peace they had barely managed to rebuild. They all pretended Lin Yueshu was still away on a trip, and no one was willing to break the illusion.
Life went on as usual. Everyone went to work, stayed busy, and avoided social gatherings like coffee outings. Occasionally, they would call each other to check in, but nothing more.
A year passed in this unchanging routine. Their relationships remained exactly as they had been a year ago neither closer nor more distant, hovering in a state that seemed ambiguous but wasn’t.
This year, everyone’s life remained largely unchanged, except that everyone seemed to have lost a lot of weight. Then, one day, the arrival of one person shattered all the quietude.
Lin Yushu returned home from work as usual, living her routine life of shuttling between two fixed points. But today was different. The moment she opened the door, she caught the familiar aroma of food. Dishes that Lin Yueshu was best at cooking, all of which were Lin Yushu’s favorites.
She dropped her bag and didn’t even take off her shoes before rushing straight to the kitchen. There, she saw a familiar scene and a familiar figure. Instantly, she covered her mouth, leaned against the wall, and broke down in silent sobs.
She had no idea how much this news would affect her. Just as she was finally coming to terms with life without Lin Yueshu, Lin Yueshu suddenly reappeared, making everything feel surreal.
Seeing Lin Yushu’s silent anguish, Lin Yueshu walked over and embraced her tightly. She knew she had been gone for far too long without even a single message. She could only imagine how worried and heartbroken Lin Yushu had been.
The moment she remembered everything; she didn’t hesitate. She immediately booked a flight back home.
Originally, she had already boarded the plane when she suddenly remembered leaving something meant for Lin Yushu at the hotel. She got off the plane to retrieve it, but on the way, she was involved in a car accident.
She lay in the hospital for two months before waking up, and even then, she had no memory of anything. It wasn’t until the day before yesterday that everything came back to her. As soon as she remembered, she made arrangements to return. The moment she arrived today, she went straight to Lin Yushu’s place.
Holding Lin Yushu, Lin Yueshu said, “I’m sorry, sis. I was gone for too long this time. I’ll never leave you again.”
Lin Yushu pounded Lin Yueshu’s shoulders with her fists, crying, “Why didn’t you call? Do you know how scared I was? You’re the worst person in the world!” Her punches grew weaker until she finally collapsed onto Lin Yueshu’s shoulder, sobbing uncontrollably.
Lin Yueshu picked her up and placed her on the sofa, smiling. “Sis, stop crying. If you keep crying, you really won’t be able to get married. The food I made is getting cold. Go wash your hands and eat.”
Afraid it was all a dream, Lin Yushu clung tightly to Lin Yueshu, refusing to let go. Lin Yueshu let her hold on until Lin Yushu finally calmed down. They ate, washed up, and went to bed.
Lin Yushu asked what had happened, and Lin Yueshu gave only a brief account, speaking as if it were someone else’s story. But Lin Yushu knew Lin Yueshu was just trying not to worry her.
For Lin Yushu, nothing mattered more now than Lin Yueshu’s return. The past was behind them—what mattered was that Lin Yueshu was back. Her Yue’er had come home.
That night, Lin Yushu had the most peaceful sleep she’d had in a year. When she woke in the morning and saw Lin Yueshu’s sleeping face, her heart swelled with happiness.
But when she noticed the scar on Lin Yueshu’s collarbone, her heart clenched painfully. She knew Lin Yueshu had suffered greatly this past year. Just because Lin Yueshu didn’t talk about it didn’t mean she was unaware. She wrapped her arms around Lin Yueshu and held her close. At this moment, she felt utterly content.
In the morning, Lin Yueshu asked Mu Yun for a day off, saying she had something to attend to and wouldn’t be coming into the company. Mu Yun agreed.
The entire day, Lin Yushu stayed by Lin Yueshu’s side. In the evening, they invited Gu Fei, Su Fuyin, and He Cheng out for dinner.
The three of them were overjoyed to see Lin Yueshu. However, Lin Yueshu still got a stern scolding from them. Though reprimanded, she was happy nonetheless, knowing they genuinely cared for her.
That evening, Lin Yueshu mentioned she wanted to move back to her old place. When Lin Yushu asked why, she simply replied that she had promised someone before. But she assured Lin Yushu she would visit often.
Lin Yushu understood that Lin Yueshu had her own reasons and burdens, though she didn’t know what exactly her sister was keeping from her. Still, she knew Lin Yueshu always put her first, so she didn’t press further. She just wanted to stay by her side.
On the third day after returning home, Lin Yueshu went back to the place she had shared with Murong Qing. Stepping inside, she found everything just as she had left it. The fridge was empty; clearly unused for a long time.
But whether Murong Qing was around or not, she wouldn’t ask. She knew the nature of their relationship. Some things weren’t hers to question.
In the afternoon, she bought groceries and daily necessities. After dinner and a phone call with Lin Yushu, she washed up and went to bed.
Half a year ago, Murong Qing had bought another place outside. The home she once shared with Lin Yueshu only brought back memories of their time together. Exhausted, she no longer wanted to live that way. So, she moved out alone and never returned, only arranging for weekly cleanings.
Tonight, after work, for some inexplicable reason, she found herself driving to the villa where she and Lin Yueshu had lived.
It was already 1 a.m. Murong Qing gazed at the dark, unlit villa, wondering when someone would ever wait for her here again. The person who used to always wait for her. She feared that person would never return.
Murong Qing stepped out of the car, climbed the steps, and unlocked the door. When she turned on the living room lights, the atmosphere felt different. No longer cold and empty, but filled with a familiar scent.
She sat on the sofa, closed her eyes, and took in everything around her. For the first time in a year, she felt truly at ease. She loved this feeling and stayed there until dawn.
Lin Yueshu was a light sleeper and usually woke early. Today was no exception. Before 6 a.m., she was already up, washing up and getting ready. By six, she had changed into casual clothes for her morning run.
As she descended the stairs, she saw Murong Qing sitting on the sofa with her eyes closed. Sensing someone in the house, Murong Qing opened her eyes and spotted Lin Yueshu standing on the staircase. At that moment, Murong Qing didn’t know how to react.
She stared blankly at Lin Yueshu, afraid to blink. Terrified that if she did, Lin Yueshu would disappear.
Lin Yueshu studied the dazed Murong Qing and noticed how alarmingly thin she had become. Her once softly rounded chin was now sharp and gaunt.
She walked downstairs and greeted her, “Good morning, Miss.” With Murong Qing here, Lin Yueshu knew her morning run wasn’t happening.
The familiar voice, the familiar presence—Murong Qing knew this was the real Lin Yueshu. She stood up, pulled Lin Yueshu into her arms, and held her tightly.
Murong Qing couldn’t describe what she was feeling, only that Lin Yueshu had returned; her Yueshu was back. Tears welled up in her eyes.
Lin Yueshu was held so tightly by Murong Qing that she could barely breathe. Frowning, she said to Murong Qing, “Miss, you’re holding me too tight. I can’t catch my breath.”
Hearing this, Murong Qing immediately let go and anxiously checked on Lin Yueshu, saying, “Is it better now? It’s just that I’m so happy right now.”
Lin Yueshu gave a soft “Mm” and said nothing more.
