- Chapter 4 - It’s My Fault You Died
“What are you thinking about?”
Having just laid hands on the female lead, Gu Jinli was fully prepared for a violent retaliation. But to her surprise, the girl remained as still as a block of wood, offering no reaction at all.
This anomaly set Gu Jinli’s nerves on edge. She slowly loosened her grip on the girl’s mouth and took two cautious steps back.
She knew this character all too well. As the saying goes: When the female lead is quiet, she’s definitely brewing a riot. This brat was undoubtedly calculating how to get her revenge.
“I wasn’t thinking about anything.”
Seeing Gu Jinli so guarded, Shen Chigui’s expression shifted instantly. Her small face crumpled, her lips trembled, and her eyes turned a watery red in a heartbeat.
“Why is Big Sister so defensive toward me? I just…”
Her tender voice carried a distinct sob. Shen Chigui’s features were already striking—a sharp, aggressive kind of beauty—but when she played the victim, she looked so pitiable it was enough to make anyone’s heart ache.
She was clearly aware of her natural advantage, utilizing her looks to lure Gu Jinli into dropping her guard.
Unfortunately…
“Drop the act.”
Gu Jinli reached out, pinched the lead’s mouth shut to cut off the waterworks, and sighed. She wasn’t in the mood for games. “Climb the tree. Now! I’m going to watch you do it.”
She pushed the girl toward the trunk, deciding that she would only climb once the lead was safely up there. Leaving Shen Chigui alone on the ground was a recipe for disaster.
“Uuuugh…”
Standing before the tree, Shen Chigui dramatically wiped her face, though it was all thunder and no rain—not a single tear actually fell. Realizing Gu Jinli wasn’t biting, she sighed and began to scale the trunk with practiced ease.
Seeing her finally behave, Gu Jinli let out a long breath of relief. It was only then that she noticed something strange about her chest. The pain was… gone?
Huh?
She reached up to feel the area. It truly didn’t hurt anymore. Had the wound healed that quickly? Or was it a side effect of the “Resurrection” mechanic?
“Big Sister, what are you doing?”
Having just straddled a sturdy branch, Shen Chigui looked down to see the woman below… groping her own chest?
Shen Chigui went silent for a moment before speaking up. “Someone seems to be coming this way… Big Sister, hurry up!”
“…”
Did she think I didn’t want to get up there?!
Gu Jinli had assumed climbing a tree was a basic human skill, but upon trying it, she realized it was anything but. She… couldn’t do it. She simply didn’t know how to climb.
Now what?
“Big Sister doesn’t know how to climb?”
One look at Gu Jinli’s frustrated face and Shen Chigui knew exactly what the problem was. She shifted her sitting position on the branch, looking down with a sweet, crescent-eyed smile. “Want me to help you?”
“Help me? How?”
She hadn’t heard of “tree-climbing assistance” before… was she going to reach down and pull her up? After several more failed attempts to find a foothold, Gu Jinli finally capitulated.
“Fine. Help me out!”
She looked up, stretching her hand toward the girl above, waiting for a lift.
However.
“Okay, Big Sister.”
Seeing that Gu Jinli had taken the bait, Shen Chigui’s lips curled into a predatory smirk. She suddenly threw her head back and shrieked at the top of her lungs: “HELP! SOMEBODY HELP ME!”
Firmly perched on her branch, she didn’t reach down to help. Instead, she used her scream like a beacon to draw every killer in the vicinity.
“You—!”
Gu Jinli’s face paled. She should have known! She turned to run, but it was already too late. Those who were already heading their way surged forward at the sound of the cry. In a place like this, “kill on sight” was the only rule.
And so…
[You have died.]
…
[You have died.]
…
[You have died.]
The attackers were so relentless that she was hacked down before she could even complete a full resurrection cycle. Gu Jinli didn’t even want to look; she knew her current body must be a gruesome sight.
Luckily, the killers were professionals—every strike was a clean, instant kill, so she didn’t suffer much. But their habit of “over-killing” the corpse was something she couldn’t abide.
Her body, which she might have been able to pass off as “merely wounded,” was now being reduced to tattered ribbons… how was she supposed to explain this later? Especially with a heartless female lead watching from above. If Shen Chigui realized she couldn’t die even after being minced, heaven only knew what kind of experimental torture awaited her.
The mere thought gave Gu Jinli a splitting headache.
Forget it. I’m playing dead. I am officially a corpse!
With that thought, Gu Jinli’s legs gave a final twitch, and she lay there, perfectly still and remarkably zen.
[You have been resurrected.]
The very next second, one of the passersby who had just finished murdering her stepped squarely on her. After wiping his boots, he casually strolled away.
Son of a—!
The veins on Gu Jinli’s forehead were practically throbbing with rage. She kept her head tilted to the side, remaining perfectly motionless. She chose to endure.
“Big Sister?”
Seeing that the person under the tree had stopped moving entirely, Shen Chigui suddenly felt a wave of boredom.
What? She died that easily?
Then again, given the way she had just been hacked apart, surviving would have been a miracle.
But wasn’t this person a Task-taker? Why didn’t she use any of those magical abilities? Shen Chigui remembered previous Task-takers who possessed powers like flying, tunneling through the earth, or—in the most extreme cases—even freezing time.
By comparison, the weaponless and powerless Gu Jinli was pathetic. From the moment they met until now, this woman hadn’t shown a single shred of special talent. If it hadn’t been for that look of “clear and sparkling stupidity” in her eyes, Shen Chigui might not have even been certain of her identity.
Wait. Something was wrong.
“…”
Shen Chigui narrowed her eyes. She suddenly realized one thing: the world was still functioning normally.
She remembered that in many previous cycles, the moment a Task-taker died, the world would hit the “pause” button. She would lose consciousness shortly after and remain unable to move independently until the next Task-taker arrived.
But now, the world hadn’t paused. Time was still flowing. This left only two possibilities.
Either the entity bringing these people here had finally given up on her… or this person wasn’t actually dead.
Between the two, the latter was far more believable.
Looking down at the blood-soaked girl on the ground, Shen Chigui licked her lower lip with renewed interest.
Not dead?
Could this be this Task-taker’s special ability? Unlike the flight or magic of the others, is her power simply immortality?
Immortality…
How fascinating.
“Big Sister? How are you doing?”
A look of utterly ridiculous “concern” washed over her face. Even though she knew she had already exposed her true colors, Shen Chigui was still having a grand old time playing the game.
She slid cautiously down from the tree and knelt by Gu Jinli’s side. Staring at the woman’s tightly shut eyes, she whispered, “Big Sister, don’t scare me like this~”
“I really didn’t know he would get here so fast. I thought that if you got nervous enough… you’d unlock your potential and climb right up…”
“Waaaah… Big Sister, it’s my fault you died.”
******
While her mouth emitted continuous, sobbing whimpers, Shen Chigui’s eyes were meticulously scanning the body on the ground from head to toe.
She quickly noticed an anomaly with the wounds. Attacks that violent should have left gruesome, gaping gashes; the bleeding shouldn’t have stopped this quickly.
So, is she immortal because she possesses hyper-regeneration?
“Big Sister, please talk to me~”
With deliberate intent, Shen Chigui lunged forward and sprawled half-across Gu Jinli’s body. Without shedding a single actual tear, she began to strip Gu Jinli’s clothes.
Gu Jinli: “…”
Wait a minute.
This is getting a bit out of hand, don’t you think?!
