The Demon Lord Is Carrying My Child - Chapter 4
When Zhuang Yi opened her eyes again, it was already evening. She was lying on a bed in what looked like an inn room; Ji Shutao was nowhere to be seen.
Her muddled brain cleared instantly upon realizing this. Zhuang Yi stepped onto the floor barefoot and ran straight into Ji Shutao, who was carrying dinner, just as she opened the door.
Ji Shutao only managed to steady herself by leaning against the doorframe. She cried out, “What are you doing? What are you doing? I’m telling you, I’m carrying all the signature dishes from this establishment…”
Zhuang Yi pounced forward and hugged Ji Shutao just as she had done before. Every time, she used all her strength, as if Ji Shutao might vanish into thin air the very next moment.
Last time, a sword had stood between them, and Ji Shutao had cast it aside without hesitation.
This time, gourmet delicacies stood between them, and Ji Shutao threw those aside without hesitation as well.
Ji Shutao: Wait, what did I just throw away?
The sound of shattering bowls and plates echoed around them. Soon, the fragrance of food filled the air, but at that moment, Ji Shutao could only smell the clear scent lingering on Zhuang Yi.
That familiar, reassuring fragrance.
There was no helping it; she had thrown the food herself, so she had to take the blame. After carefully leading Zhuang Yi back into the room, Ji Shutao called for someone to come up and clean the mess, ordering another portion of food while she was at it.
That evening, Zhuang Yi said she wanted to go downstairs for a walk. Ji Shutao naturally had no problem with that the problem was, why did you have to drag me along just to go for a walk?
Furthermore, Zhuang Yi’s range of activity was merely from the second floor to the first floor counter.
Ji Shutao watched with wide eyes as Zhuang Yi pulled out a gold ingot and said, “I do not have much silver or coin on me. I must trouble you to cancel one of the rooms.”
Looking at that gold ingot, Ji Shutao rubbed her eyes in utter disbelief. That was clearly gold how could she claim she didn’t have much money?
The shopkeeper was just as dazed as she was, but his hands moved faster than his brain, deftly tucking the gold away.
“Certainly!”
And so, Zhuang Yi who supposedly lacked funds yet could casually produce a gold ingot ended up sleeping in the same bed as Ji Shutao.
“Now, now, now. Although I don’t turn anyone away and I love beautiful women, it doesn’t mean I… like you,” Ji Shutao said solemnly while clutching her clothes, looking very much like a performer who “sold her art but not her body.”
Zhuang Yi glanced at her, turned over directly to the inner side of the bed, lay down properly, and showed no further reaction.
Ji Shutao began to doubt herself again. She jumped off the bed, inspected herself from head to toe, and started muttering to herself, “Am I not charming enough? Am I, Ji Shutao, not also one of the top beauties in the martial world? How can someone be so indifferent to me?”
Ji Shutao likely hadn’t realized that since she started staying by Zhuang Yi’s side, not only had she stopped falling into nightmares, but her “vibrant little sun” personality was showing signs of returning.
Moreover… Zhuang Yi opened her eyes. Ji Shutao really is a little fool. Didn’t she say there was absolutely no possibility between us?
Ji Shutao fussed and agonized over it for a long while before finally lying back down on the bed. By then, Zhuang Yi’s breathing was steady.
Ji Shutao couldn’t sleep. With nothing else to do, she simply turned on her side to stare at Zhuang Yi.
Zhuang Yi was very cold cold features, cold personality like moonlight spilling down at midnight, without a hint of warmth. She was also like morning mist, making it impossible for people to see her clearly.
Ji Shutao recalled the time she shed tears. What did that count as?
Who would dare pour wine into the morning mist and the moonlight?
It was truly sacrilegious.
Little did she know, she was the sacrilegious one. She had poured wine into the mist and the moonlight; the cold beauty had been fragrant ever since, yet she Ji Shutao had run away.
The next day, Ji Shutao decided to go out and see if there was anything good to eat or play with. Since her relationship with Zhuang Yi was one of “the kidnapped and the kidnapper,” she naturally remembered to ask for permission.
Zhuang Yi said nothing and simply tossed her a bag of silver.
“You’re not coming with me?” Ji Shutao leaned in close to Zhuang Yi, who was eating porridge. Seeing her own reflection in those stagnant eyes felt strangely fun.
“I won’t go. Go by yourself,” Zhuang Yi set down her bowl and chopsticks. “Come back early.”
Ji Shutao was a bit disappointed. Zhuang Yi had always been willing to stay with her, but this time, she had actually refused.
Perhaps sensing that Ji Shutao was a bit dejected, Zhuang Yi hooked her finger around Ji Shutao’s.
Who wants their finger hooked?
Ji Shutao’s face flushed red, and she stormed out in a fit of pique.
The reason Zhuang Yi didn’t accompany Ji Shutao was that she had other important matters to attend to.
Now that they had been traveling for two days, Beichen Mountain likely wouldn’t expect them to head west; they would probably only pursue them toward the southeast. She didn’t need to worry about those people, as she had already notified the Demon Realm to prepare illusion techniques.
However, that person was a different story. He knew all the inside details and would likely guess where Zhuang Yi would first take Ji Shutao.
In the past, if Zhuang Yi encountered him, she could have brought Ji Shutao to safety unscathed. But now, firstly, Zhuang Yi had consumed too much cultivation at Beichen Mountain, and some of her internal injuries had yet to heal Beichen Mountain’s swordsmanship was indeed well-deserved of its reputation. Secondly… Zhuang Yi looked at her stomach. Thanks to this little fellow, her magic was entirely constrained.
Therefore, Zhuang Yi had to make arrangements as soon as possible to lead that person onto a different path to protect herself and Ji Shutao.
Just as Zhuang Yi was about to go upstairs, her gaze caught a shadow flickering by the door. She figured it was a mountain spirit or something similar; she didn’t have the energy to deal with such things, as long as they didn’t provoke her.
Ji Shutao didn’t have so many complicated thoughts. she strolled along the way, her hands gradually filling with items. This town was no less prosperous than the one at the foot of Beichen Mountain. She had long been spoiled for choice, and since it was Zhuang Yi’s money anyway, she had no reservations.
By chance, she passed a preserved fruit shop. Although Ji Shutao liked sweets, she didn’t care for the cloying sweetness of preserved fruits.
The reason she stood in the shop picking through the selection was to bring back some sour fruits, like plums, for Zhuang Yi.
Based on the supreme morality that “all living beings under heaven are living beings,” Ji Shutao felt she should take good care of Zhuang Yi especially a Zhuang Yi who was pregnant and didn’t seem to care for herself.
She wondered what Zhuang Yi would do once they eventually went their separate ways. With such a mother, could the little fellow in her belly even enter this world safely?
As Ji Shutao walked and pondered, she gradually entered a deserted area. By the time she snapped out of it, there was no path left to exit.
Ji Shutao stood there holding a pile of food, speechless. “No way… I can get lost even here?”
She was certain she had been walking along the main street the whole time.
After turning in circles several times, Ji Shutao finally sat down, exhausted.
It was only then she realized that on this entire street, she was the only person!
Although surrounded by shops, there wasn’t a trace of human presence. In the broad daylight, layers of cold, eerie air began to coil around her.
No matter how slow-witted Ji Shutao was, she understood now: she wasn’t lost; she had walked into a maze formation set by someone with ulterior motives.
Though she didn’t know what this person wanted, drawing her into a maze right away meant they came with ill intent and would likely be hard to deal with.
Ji Shutao only had a pile of food with her; she didn’t even have a decent weapon. Although she had made progress over the past two months, she couldn’t handle a fight empty handed.
After this chaotic analysis, Ji Shutao decided she might as well just wait for death where she was.
She lay down calmly, wondering when Zhuang Yi would realize she was missing.
