- Chapter 3 - An Unforgettable First Impression
Seeing that the surrounding discussions had died down, Jian Tao’s mood finally improved significantly.
Just then, two people seemingly popped out of nowhere. “Young Master Jian, we haven’t seen you for several days. We were looking for you to grab a drink.”
Due to his physical condition, Jian Tao could not drink much alcohol. However, as a vicious cannon fodder, as long as he had a bit of energy, he enjoyed mixing with these fair-weather friends.
The two people in front of him were currently the favorites in Jian Tao’s circle: one was named Shen Ran and the other was Zhao Kuo. They had just arrived in City A this year. Their family backgrounds were at a level where those above them were out of reach and those below them were ignored. Although Jian Tao was notorious in the circle, his family status was top-tier, so those who could not reach higher would flatter him.
Seeing the two of them, Jian Tao gave them a bit of a good face, but not much. Although he liked to fool around with them, Young Master Jian had been arrogant since childhood. He spoke to them with his head held high. “I don’t have time lately. Wait for my call.”
After saying this, Jian Tao brushed past them and scanned the banquet hall, spotting the person he was looking for.
As soon as Jian Tao left, Shen Ran could not help but sneer behind his back. “What is he so proud of? We are the only ones who pay any attention to him. If he weren’t a member of the Jian family, who would want to waste time on him?”
“I heard recently that the Jian family doesn’t actually take him seriously. The junior who really has the final say in the Jian family is actually that butler by his side,” Zhao Kuo said. They were from a family newly arrived in City A. If they weren’t desperate to integrate into the upper-class circle, they would never flatter a waste like Jian Tao.
“If that is true, then he should get lost. I heard he can’t even show his face without that mask. I have long been fed up with his eccentricities,” Shen Ran said with disgust.
“Tsk, it is a pity that such a beautiful pair of legs grows on his body.”
Jian Tao went straight to Jiang Shi. As soon as he arrived, he began to question him. “Why haven’t you contacted me at all these past few days? I sent you messages, but you didn’t reply.”
He was dressed in tender pink, and his skin was so white it seemed to glow. Although his tone was blunt, his voice was soft and sweet, making him a very conspicuous presence. However, Jiang Shi did not spare him a single glance. Just hearing his voice made the man’s eyebrows furrow in irritation. “If I have something to discuss, I will naturally contact you.”
Being loathed, Jian Tao subconsciously glared at Jiang Shi. His eyes behind the mask flickered with a moist luster due to his excitement, and his fleshy lips were pressed together as his attitude became domineering. “Then if I contact you about something, you must reply as well!”
Nearby, Jiang Chengli watched the two of them with the expression of someone watching a good show. He handed a glass of wine to Su Wen, who was standing beside him. “Look, it is starting again.”
Su Wen took a sip of the slightly bitter red wine. His eyes narrowed behind his glasses. He wondered if Young Master Jian would still have the heart to pester Jiang Shi after marrying into the Jiang family. “Twisted melons are not sweet.”
“Heh, Young Master Jian is the only one who doesn’t understand that logic,” Jiang Chengli joked.
A cold smile curled at the corner of Su Wen’s mouth. “He won’t be able to act stupid for much longer.”
On the other side, Jiang Shi had completely lost his patience with Jian Tao. He turned sideways to look directly into the eyes behind the mask and said word for word, “I have the right not to reply to your messages.”
Jian Tao’s face flushed red. He whispered, “We are about to get married. This is not the attitude one should have toward a husband.”
“Say that a little louder and see if I still marry you,” Jiang Shi said, feeling irritable. He would rather have a straightforward argument and part on bad terms—which was how they usually interacted—instead of this endless entanglement.
Jian Tao naturally knew that the agreement they signed specified that no news was allowed to be leaked before the wedding, or else the marriage would be voided. To think he would use this to threaten him here. For a moment, a layer of mist covered his beautiful eyes, and his pale fingers clenched together tightly. If this news leaked out, the plot line would definitely collapse.
Originally, Jiang Shi had stood his ground, waiting for Jian Tao’s fierce counterattack and curses before he stormed away. But it did not happen. He looked at him in confusion and then froze for a moment. He met a pair of very beautiful eyes; the light-colored pupils were moist, like gems shrouded in mist. Those lovely lips were bitten pale, and he even smelled that special fragrance again.
The veins on Jiang Shi’s forehead tightened for a moment. Was he actually feeling aggrieved?
Just as Jiang Shi felt this scene was surreal, he saw Jian Tao take a glass of red wine from a waiter’s tray. He curled his lips into a mocking arc. As expected, only this wine can vent Young Master Jian’s anger. However, he did not want his own clothes to suffer for it.
However, in the next second, the glass of red wine was handed to him. The contrast between the fair fingers and the bright red liquid was striking. He heard the person in front of him say, “If you drink this glass, I will forgive you for not replying to my messages.”
The attitude appeared forceful, but the tone was so soft it sounded like acting spoiled.
Jiang Shi moved his gaze irritably away from the red wine and raised his hand to tug at his tie. He could turn around and leave right now without giving this self-righteous, playboy young master any face at all. In the past, he certainly would have done so. But today, after moving his gaze away in disdain, his hand reached out as if possessed and took the glass. He then drained it in one gulp.
Seeing Jiang Shi drink it, Jian Tao immediately breathed a sigh of relief. He had finally managed to find a perfect way out of the situation. He still spoke stubbornly, saying, “Then I forgive you for now.”
Jiang Shi’s gaze swept over the mask. He then took a deep breath and warned him, “Before you marry into the Jiang family, you better behave yourself. Also, stop wearing such a foul-smelling perfume.”
After saying this, he left Jian Tao behind and turned to walk away.
“What?” Jian Tao smelled his own clothes; there was no strange scent. He was suddenly so angry his chest heaved, and the mist in his eyes grew even thicker.
Jiang Shi did not look back. Jian Tao stood in place, feeling angry for quite a while until his gaze landed on the refreshment area nearby. He walked over, picked up a piece of his favorite strawberry cake, and felt much better after eating it.
Looking back at the hall, he saw Su Wen and Jiang Shi chatting together. This scene made him relax a little. If the two of them developed their relationship line as quickly as possible, it would be beneficial for his plot.
With both the protagonist and the male lead away from him, Jian Tao finally had some free time. He focused on the cake in front of him, taking one small spoonful after another. Finally, he even licked away the cream at the corner of his mouth. He then took another plate to pick out things he liked to eat, completely unaware that someone was standing beside him until he bumped into the person while moving. He was startled.
“Why are you standing so close to me?” Jian Tao said crossly. He knew this was Jiang Shi’s good friend, whose daily responsibility was to mock him in front of Jiang Shi.
Jiang Chengli closed his eyes and took an enchanted breath. “Recognizing a person by their fragrance.”
“Disgusting,” Jian Tao glared at him. There were never any kind words between them; he even suspected that Jiang Chengli had feelings for Jiang Shi.
Jiang Chengli did not care that Jian Tao cursed at him. Teasing this useless young master satisfied his wicked sense of fun. “Young Master Jian, we are going for an outdoor trip in a couple of days. Are you coming?”
Jian Tao had just picked up a milk ball. Not knowing if it was sweet or salty, he brought it to his lips and licked it. Then he turned his head and asked, “Is Jiang Shi going too?”
Jiang Chengli froze for a moment. He turned his head and gave a light cough. “Is that how you eat things?”
“That’s inexplicable. What does how I eat have to do with you?” As he spoke, he stuffed the sweet milk ball into his mouth, licking and rolling it around, even making a crisp sound as it hit his teeth.
Jiang Chengli suddenly felt a rush of heat and cursed “damn” under his breath. This useless young master even ate a milk ball in such an erotic way. If he didn’t know that the face under that mask was unbearable to look at, he would have wanted to kidnap him.
“We plan to find a place with beautiful mountains and clear water to play for a few days. Of course, Jiang Shi is going. Are you coming?” Jiang Chengli subconsciously stared at that fleshy little mouth.
“Sure, I’ll go,” Jian Tao said. Following the normal plot, he was supposed to go on this trip.
Just as he finished speaking, System 250’s voice rang in his mind.
“New task online: Meeting your future husband, Jiang Mu, for the first time,” 250 announced the task in a cold, mechanical voice. “The objective is to leave a deep first impression on your future husband to intensify the marital tragedy after the wedding, which will help accelerate your departure from this world. Upon task completion, you will receive 5% plot progress.”
Jian Tao looked up and saw a tall person with an extraordinary temperament walking in through the door, surrounded by many people. One could tell at a glance that the person was Jiang Mu. His face was cold, and his temperament was gloomy, projecting an aura that warned others not to approach.
