- Chapter 2 - The Bully and the Butler
In the early morning, Jian Tao lay nestled in his soft quilt, unwilling to get up.
System 250 woke up at the same time as him. Jian Tao’s sleep time served as the system’s charging time. Unlike Jian Tao, who loved to linger in bed, 250 was now brimming with energy.
“Tao Tao, hurry up and get out of bed. It is time for us to bully Butler Su,” System 250 said as a reminder.
“Mm,” Jian Tao turned his face to the side, pressing against the pillow so hard his lips pouted. “Five more minutes.”
“Alright, hehe.” System 250 loved hearing Jian Tao act spoiled.
Ultimately, Jian Tao dawdled for more than ten minutes before finally getting up. He had always liked to stay in bed, and his current body was incredibly weak, which only exacerbated this habit. After getting up, Jian Tao felt his head spinning and his body lacking strength. He held his phone in his hand, hesitating for a long while before finally dialing Su Wen’s number. The other side picked up quickly.
In a voice that carried the slight rasp of someone who had just woken up, Jian Tao said, “Hello. Bring my breakfast up to me. Hurry up.”
Su Wen’s magnetic voice responded, “Alright.”
After hanging up the phone, Jian Tao was surprised for a moment. “He is actually quite obedient.”
Even though Su Wen was a butler, he currently held an important position in the Jian family’s company, and the family business would likely be handed over to him in the future. Jian Tao had thought Su Wen would not show any respect to a useless young master like himself. However, reflecting on it, while Su Wen might look down on him, Jian Tao was still of the Jian family bloodline, so Su Wen had to at least maintain appearances.
Jian Tao went to wash up. When he came out, he saw a servant placing the meal on the small dining table and leaving. “It was not Su Wen who delivered it personally?”
“If he does not come, there is no way to bully him,” System 250 said.
Jian Tao sat on the edge of the bed and thought for a moment. He then picked up his phone and called Su Wen again. “Since he did not come, it is the perfect time to find fault with him.”
The other side still answered quickly. “Hello, Young Master.”
In order to make his voice sound serious, Jian Tao composed his pale little face into a stern expression. “Am I unable to order you around anymore? I told you to bring the meal up. Where are you?”
There was a moment of silence on the other end before that cold, magnetic voice spoke again. “I have already instructed the servant to deliver the meal.”
“I said I wanted you to bring it up. Do you not understand my words?” Jian Tao’s tone was arrogant and overbearing. After saying this, he hung up the call.
Immediately after, he let out a sigh of relief. It was still a bit difficult to adjust to playing such a malicious young master for the first time.
Not long after, there was a knock on the door, and Su Wen walked in. He had a tall and straight stature, and his black suit formed sharp lines across his body. His face was devoid of extra expression. “Young Master, what is the matter you wanted to see me for?”
Jian Tao looked at him, his fingers unconsciously clenching. “How do you do your job? I want to eat in bed. Move the breakfast table onto the bed right now.”
Su Wen looked at Jian Tao’s sickly pale face. The arrogant appearance was quite vivid. Indeed, with this face, he looked much more lively. Strangely, it also made him seem less loathsome.
Jian Tao watched as Su Wen walked up to him. Because of the reflection on the butler’s glasses, he could not see the expression in his eyes. “Then I must ask the Young Master to get up first.”
As expected of the male lead of this novel, Su Wen standing tall in front of him truly created a sense of mounting pressure. Jian Tao prepared to stand up, but just as his feet touched the floor, a sharp pain shot through his calf. His leg suddenly lost all strength.
“Quickly! My leg has a cramp!” Jian Tao cried out in alarm, a hurried flush appearing on his pale face.
His misty eyes looked toward Su Wen, but the other man remained motionless. “Su Wen, are you a piece of wood?”
His current body was very weak and plagued by illness, making even a little pain hard to endure. Finally, he saw Su Wen move. Jian Tao quickly turned around and lay facedown on the bed, secretly wiping away the tears that had been forced out by the pain. It was too embarrassing.
The person on the bed was not in an elegant position. His silk nightgown clung thinly to his body, his waist dipped, and his body curves were beautiful. His snow-white calves were exposed, with one leg lifted as he was afraid to let it touch the ground. Su Wen watched everything with a cold eye before finally speaking. “What does the Young Master need me to do?”
“Help me smooth out the muscle, of course. You really are a piece of wood.” Jian Tao’s voice was weak and lacked strength. A layer of fine sweat had formed on his forehead, and the corners of his eyes were red. His pale little face was pitiable.
Only then did Su Wen squat down and grasp Jian Tao’s calf. The skin he touched was unexpectedly delicate and soft. If he applied even a little more pressure, it would leave a red mark. Su Wen looked up at the person whose shoulders were trembling and could not help but wonder: was the eldest young master of the Jian family always this delicate?
Jian Tao wiped away his continuous tears, feeling more and more aggrieved. He had been raised as the jewel of his family’s eye, living a life of luxury, yet now he had become like this. “Su Wen, why are you so useless? It is still not better yet.”
Jian Tao felt he was being very professional; he was a model villain.
Suddenly, the pressure on his leg increased, and Jian Tao immediately gasped in surprise. He reflexively tried to pull his leg back, but it was instantly grasped and pulled back. Jian Tao could not help but look back. Since his leg was in the other man’s hands, he was afraid of being retaliated against, so he could only mutter softly, “Be gentler. You hurt me just now.”
Su Wen’s hand suddenly paused. He looked at Jian Tao, his lips pursed slightly, and the pressure of his hands indeed became lighter. One calf was massaged until it was warm and flushed red. Gradually, the cramp was smoothed out.
Jian Tao felt the pain vanish, but he remained pouted on the bed with his face buried in the quilt, unwilling to let Su Wen see that he had cried. “You can go out now,” Jian Tao said in a muffled voice.
The room fell silent. Occasionally, the bird on the windowsill chirped. Jian Tao thought Su Wen had left, so he turned around and sat up, only to see a tall, straight figure still standing there. Jian Tao’s face turned red instantly. His misty eyes and eyelashes were clumped together, but he was clearly embarrassed and angry. “Did I not tell you to go out?”
His momentum was clearly lacking, and his voice still carried the tremor of having just cried. He sounded both soft and pitiful.
Su Wen did not speak again. Jian Tao looked up at him and saw the man slightly bowing his head. Looking down from above, the butler’s glasses reflected a cold light, but the corners of his mouth were turned up. Jian Tao suddenly felt a chill. Just as he was about to instinctively retreat, Su Wen suddenly bent down. His thumb slid across the corner of Jian Tao’s eye, wiping away a lingering tear. He was smiling, but it felt as though the smile did not reach his eyes. “I will not make the Young Master cry next time.”
The corner of his eye felt hot where the rough fingertip had rubbed it. Then, he saw Su Wen stand up and leave the room. Jian Tao sat on the bed stunned for a few seconds before reacting. He was so angry he clenched his small fists. “He must be mocking me!”
“He refused to leave just now because he wanted to see me make a fool of myself!”
“It is alright, Tao Tao. I have good news for you. Su Wen’s task progress bar has increased!” System 250 said with pleasant surprise.
When Jian Tao looked, it had indeed increased by quite a bit. “But I did not really bully him just now, did I?” Before he could even start, his leg had cramped.
System 250 also pondered. “The task bar is based on Su Wen’s willingness to accompany you as part of the dowry.”
Before the system could finish, Jian Tao suddenly had a realization. “Could it be because he does not want to touch me?”
Thinking about it this way, it made sense. System 250 agreed. “Because he and the protagonist are a couple, he loathes touching anyone other than the protagonist!”
Jian Tao was now even more certain. A smile appeared on his face, which was still red from crying. “I know what I should do.”
From that day on, Jian Tao’s torment of Su Wen began. He set a fixed time every day for Su Wen to wake him up. Sometimes, being too lazy to bend over, he made Su Wen put on his shoes for him. He turned the butler, who managed all the Jian family’s affairs, into his personal servant. The plot progress went exactly as Jian Tao hoped; the results were very obvious.
One afternoon, Jian Tao was sleeping. Given his current physical state, he needed frequent sleep to replenish his energy. However, before he was fully awake, he was woken up by Su Wen. “Young Master, the banquet tonight is about to start. Let us prepare.”
Although he had commanded Su Wen to wake him up, with Jian Tao’s temperament, the butler’s presence would cause him dissatisfaction regardless. Jian Tao gave Su Wen a cold “hmpf” and then slowly got out of bed to go to the walk-in closet.
This banquet would trigger a new task; otherwise, he would have been too lazy to go. During this time, he had hardly gone anywhere except to walk his bird in the backyard. It was not that he was a homebody, but rather that dragging a sick body around made him truly unwilling to move.
It was the height of summer, so Jian Tao found a set of short sleeves and shorts to put on. Logically, one should dress formally for a banquet to show respect, but the original character never followed this rule. He did not like being restricted, and doing this made him stand out more—commonly known as seeking attention. A light pink T-shirt and beige shorts were not particularly special, but on a boy, they looked exceptionally striking.
After changing his clothes, he came out with a pair of shoes. He threw the shoes on the floor, sat on the edge of the bed, and then raised his foot to look at Su Wen. Su Wen immediately understood the meaning. He knelt down, and Jian Tao stepped onto his leg, assuming the full posture of a superior. However, his toes were slightly curled and had turned pink.
Su Wen looked at the white foot on his leg, which stood out sharply against his black suit trousers. He looked up at Jian Tao and saw that the boy’s face was flushed pink. Seeing Su Wen looking at him, Jian Tao raised his neck. “What are you looking at? Put on my shoes already.”
Su Wen withdrew his gaze and gripped the white foot to put it into the shoe. He suddenly wondered if this stupid and stubborn young master would still be this arrogant after marrying into the Jiang family.
At the banquet, celebrities and socialites gathered, and all the famous figures in the circle had arrived. There were also many juniors who came with the intention of being introduced and making connections. Amidst the clinking of glasses, a teasing voice was heard. “I did not expect the Second Young Master of the Jiang family to dress so formally for once.”
The speaker was Jiang Chengli, a third-generation wealthy man and a close friend of Jiang Shi. Jiang Shi swept his gaze over him and said, “I also rarely see you dressed so formally.”
The two clinked glasses and smiled at each other. “Ah, forced by the situation.”
“By the way, why haven’t I seen the eldest Young Master of the Jian family, who pursues you so closely?” Jiang Chengli joked. “It is much less interesting without him here.”
“Do you miss him?” Jiang Shi asked back.
“What are you saying? I am asking for you. Would you not feel like something is missing if he wasn’t here?” Jiang Chengli said with a smile. He was also curious why Jiang Shi was not angry today. In the past, whenever someone joked about this, the Second Young Master’s face would immediately darken.
“What is this? Have you changed your view of him? Why are you not angry?”
Jiang Shi let out a chuckle. Of course he was not angry, because that person was about to disappear from his sight and would not dare to entangle him anymore.
While they were talking, an eye-catching figure walked in through the door, immediately attracting many gazes. There were countless nobles at this banquet. It was rumored that Jiang Mu, the CEO of the leading enterprise, would also be present, so no one dared to be careless; everyone was dressed formally. A sudden splash of pink appearing here made it hard for people not to be surprised. Moreover, he was wearing a mask.
As soon as Jian Tao entered, he felt many people looking at him, and an endless stream of discussion reached his ears.
“Is this the rumored Masked Prince, Jian Tao of the Jian family?” A mocking voice sounded, and someone immediately responded, “He really cannot be presented in public. What is he wearing? And he is wearing a mask. If he is too ashamed to show his face, he should not come out. Is he not embarrassing his family?” “Ah, don’t look at him like that. He is very active in pursuing the Second Young Master Jiang.” “Who is the Second Young Master Jiang? Him? He should have some self-awareness and look in a mirror.” “If he looked in a mirror, he would probably scare himself into a faint. It is said that he is hideous beneath that mask.”
Jian Tao’s face turned red with anger, and he unconsciously touched the mask on his face. After he let Su Wen help him with his leg cramp that day, it was a long time before he realized he had not been wearing the mask. However, seeing Su Wen’s normal reaction, he thought his face had already been automatically categorized as the “cannon fodder villain” by the world, so he had just made up an excuse to brush it off.
However, being called ugly by so many people at this moment still made him a bit angry. Since he could not shut all their mouths one by one, he could only take out his anger on Su Wen, saying provocatively, “Remember everyone who is speaking ill of me. If you miss a single one, do not blame me for being unkind to you.”
Su Wen’s gaze drifted toward the person beside him. Unkind? How unkind?
Actually, he now felt those words were like a joke. He swept a cold gaze across the room, and the discussions immediately died down. Everyone knew that the eldest young master of the Jian family was a paper tiger; the one they truly needed to curry favor with was this Great Butler Su.
In the distance, Jiang Chengli smiled gloatingly. “Your Masked Prince is here.”
Jiang Shi glanced elsewhere and snorted coldly. Then he heard Jiang Chengli let out a “tsk.”
“Why do I feel like the temperament of this Young Master Jian has changed?” Jiang Chengli said thoughtfully. “And that skin, it is white enough to glow. Those legs, why are they so long and straight?”
“How is it different?” Jiang Shi asked lazily.
“If you don’t look at the face, he really does feel like a great beauty,” Jiang Chengli said, shaking his head as he tasted his wine, seemingly feeling it was a pity.
Jiang Shi laughed as if he had heard a joke. He sneered, “I will take that as sarcasm. Unless one is blind.”
