- Chapter 5 - Misunderstanding. She’s So Pitiful, I Have to Help Her
On the other end of the phone, Wen Zigang’s arrogant and domineering voice came to an abrupt halt.
The world seemed to have been pressed on the mute button at this very moment.
Wen Yusheng could imagine what kind of “seeing a ghost” expression Wen Zigang would have on his face right now. He probably never dreamed in a million years that one day, some random young girl appearing out of nowhere would point at his nose and roar, “I’ll call the police to arrest you.”
This was practically more insulting than being cursed at directly.
Wen Yusheng looked at Su Yang, who was standing beside her. Su Yang had snatched her phone and was now standing there with a face full of righteous indignation, looking like a little leopard with its fur standing on end. For a moment, Wen Yusheng didn’t know how to react.
There was shock and surprise, but more than anything, there was a sense of unprecedented, absurd amusement.
“Who the hell are you!?”
Wen Zigang’s roar finally came through the phone. His voice was distorted with rage, sounding like a male duck whose tail had been stepped on.
Su Yang shrank her neck back, startled by the roar, but she quickly gathered her courage. She stiffened her neck and hollered back, “It’s none of your business who I am! I’m telling you, if you dare bully Senior Wen again, I’ll… I’ll beat you up every time I see you!”
Having said her piece—and heaven knows where she got the nerve—she abruptly pressed the end-call button.
Only after doing all this did Su Yang belatedly feel a wave of guilt and fear.
Was she… perhaps a bit too impulsive just now?
That was her senior’s brother, after all. As an outsider, was she overstepping her bounds?
She cautiously lifted her head to look at Wen Yusheng, bracing herself for a lecture.
“Senior, I… I didn’t mean it. It’s just that the way he spoke was too infuriating…” Su Yang’s voice grew smaller and smaller, like a child waiting to be punished for a mistake.
However, Wen Yusheng was not angry as she had imagined.
Quite the opposite; a very faint, almost imperceptible smile appeared on Wen Yusheng’s face.
She took her phone back from Su Yang’s hand and elegantly added Wen Zigang’s number to her blacklist.
“It’s fine,” Wen Yusheng said softly, her voice devoid of any particular emotion. “Thank you.”
That “thank you” left Su Yang completely stunned.
She had thought the senior would blame her for meddling, but she hadn’t expected her to actually express gratitude.
A warm current instantly surged through Su Yang’s heart. The previous fear and guilt vanished in a flash, replaced by a strong sense of pride and responsibility.
See! She knew she had done the right thing!
The senior really was being bullied!
Su Yang’s brain began to whirl at high speed, connecting all the details she had observed.
A beautiful senior, wearing expensive clothes, yet always solitary, with an indelible exhaustion on her face.
A brother with a terrible attitude and crude language, whose every word was a threat or an insult.
The senior’s face turning pale after receiving the call, even becoming dizzy with anger.
As all the clues pieced together, a complete story formed in Su Yang’s mind.
Senior Wen must be a daughter of a wealthy family, but she’s in a difficult situation!
She is beautiful, kind, and excellent, yet she has to face internal power struggles within her family. That so-called brother of hers must be targeting and bullying her just to fight over the family inheritance!
And the senior, in order not to worry her family, can only endure all of this in silence.
She’s so tragic!
The more Su Yang thought about it, the more she felt her deduction was perfectly logical. The look she gave Wen Yusheng was instantly filled with sympathy and tender affection.
She felt that her roar just now was simply a cry for justice—a heroic act of charging into battle for the suffering princess!
Wen Yusheng, naturally, had no idea that in the span of a few dozen seconds, the “puppy” beside her had already brainstormed a whole eight-episode prime-time melodrama of wealthy family grievances.
She only keenly noticed that the way Su Yang looked at her had changed.
If before it was just simple concern and a bit of admiration, now, those clear eyes were blatantly screaming the words “Desire to Protect.”
Wen Yusheng’s heart stirred slightly.
A plan quietly took shape in her mind.
Originally, she just thought Su Yang was an interesting little puppy who could serve as a diversion in her life. But looking at it now, the role of this puppy might be much greater than she had imagined.
People like Wen Zigang were like flies; though they posed no real threat, their constant buzzing in her ear was quite annoying.
If… she had such a tall, strong, justice-filled “loyal” athlete by her side, wouldn’t it save her a lot of unnecessary trouble?
Once this thought arose, it wouldn’t go away.
Wen Yusheng decided to let this beautiful misunderstanding continue.
She played along with Su Yang’s imagination, showing a perfectly timed hint of fragility and weariness.
She raised her hand, gently pressing her temples, frowning as she let out a nearly inaudible sigh.
In Su Yang’s eyes, this gesture was the ultimate proof of being “exhausted in body and mind, yet forcing a smile.”
“Senior, are you okay?” Su Yang asked immediately, her voice tense. “Are you dizzy again? It’s my fault, I shouldn’t have let you take that call.”
“It’s not your fault.” Wen Yusheng shook her head, her voice carrying a well-placed hint of hoarseness. “I’m already used to it.”
“Used to it?” Su Yang’s voice rose unconsciously. “How can you be used to it! The way he treats you is way too much!”
“Some things are not ours to choose.” Wen Yusheng’s gaze drifted toward the distance, her tone filled with helplessness and loneliness. Her acting was truly Oscar-caliber.
Looking at her like this, Su Yang felt her heart breaking.
She felt a heavy sense of responsibility.
She had to protect this wonderful senior; she couldn’t let those bad people bully her anymore!
“Senior!” Su Yang’s expression suddenly became incredibly serious. “Don’t worry! From now on, as long as I’m here, I will never let anyone bully you again!”
She patted her firm chest, making a resounding promise.
Watching her look so determined, Wen Yusheng almost couldn’t hold back a laugh.
What a simple-minded little puppy.
She took the bait so easily.
“Thank you, Su Yang.” Wen Yusheng’s eyes turned slightly red at just the right moment. She turned her head, avoiding Su Yang’s gaze as if afraid of showing her “vulnerability.” “It’s getting late, I should head back.”
“I’ll walk you!” Su Yang said immediately, her tone brookng no argument.
After what just happened, she had already made “escorting Senior Wen safely back to the dormitory” a mandatory political mission.
Wen Yusheng did not refuse.
The two walked side-by-side again on the campus path.
This time, Su Yang was no longer distracted as before; she had fully entered “Bodyguard Mode.”
Her eyes were like radar, warily scanning the surroundings. Whenever a male being passed by them, she would subconsciously straighten her back and use her gaze to provide a silent warning.
Wen Yusheng took all these little movements in, finding it both annoying and funny.
She really found it hard to imagine how such a simple person could exist in this world.
However, the feeling of being trusted and protected without reservation wasn’t bad at all.
One could even say it was a bit addictive.
Soon, they reached the front of Wen Yusheng’s dormitory.
Wen Yusheng lived in the single apartments provided by the school for graduate and international students. The environment and security were much better than the ordinary undergraduate dorms.
Looking at this dormitory building, which was clearly much more high-end than her own, Su Yang became even more certain of her guess.
See, the senior really is a wealthy young lady!
“Senior, go on up. I’ll watch you go in.” Su Yang stopped in her tracks, acting like a dutiful gatekeeper.
“Okay.” Wen Yusheng nodded. She walked a few steps, then turned back.
“Su Yang.”
“Present!” Su Yang responded instantly.
Wen Yusheng looked at her, hesitated for a moment, and then asked, “Why… are you being so good to me?”
She was still a bit curious. They were just passing acquaintances; why would this girl be willing to go this far for her?
Su Yang was stunned by the question.
Why?
She couldn’t quite explain it herself.
Maybe it was because the senior was too beautiful, making people want to get closer.
Maybe it was because the senior’s cold yet fragile aura triggered her protective instincts.
Or maybe it was simply because that afternoon, when she saw the senior sitting alone on the bench, that lonely silhouette made her heart ache.
Su Yang scratched her head and gave a somewhat embarrassed smile.
“Because the senior is a good person.” She gave the simplest and most sincere answer.
Wen Yusheng’s heart was once again lightly bumped by this simple answer.
A good person?
How long had it been since she had heard that word?
In the giant dye-vat that was the Wen family, there were only interests—no good or bad.
“You really are a…” Wen Yusheng wanted to say “idiot,” but the word stopped at the tip of her tongue, and she swallowed it back down.
In the end, she just shook her head and said softly, “Go back and rest early.”
“Mhm! Goodbye, senior!” Su Yang waved at her.
Wen Yusheng turned and went upstairs.
Su Yang stood downstairs until she saw the light turn on in Wen Yusheng’s window. Only then did she breathe a sigh of relief and turn to leave.
But after walking just two steps, she stopped again.
No.
She was still worried.
What if that scumbag brother called again to harass the senior?
What if the senior started overthinking things alone in her room?
The more Su Yang thought about it, the more she felt it wasn’t right.
She had to do something.
She pulled out her phone, wanting to send a message to Wen Yusheng, only to suddenly realize she didn’t have Wen Yusheng’s contact information at all.
Su Yang annoyed-ly smacked her own head.
What a pig-brain! How could I forget to ask for her WeChat just now!
She looked up at the window of Wen Yusheng’s room, her mind caught in a tug-of-war.
Would it be too abrupt to run back up and ask for it now?
But if she didn’t get it, she definitely wouldn’t be able to sleep tonight.
Just as Su Yang was agonizing to the point of almost pulling her hair out, her phone suddenly let out a “ding” and lit up.
It was a friend request.
The requester’s profile picture was blank, and the nickname was just a simple letter: “W”.
Su Yang froze for a moment, then instinctively tapped “Accept.”
The other party quickly sent a message.
W: This is Wen Yusheng.
Su Yang’s eyes lit up instantly.
It was the senior!
The senior actually added her first!
Su Yang was so excited she almost threw up her phone.
She hurriedly replied: Hello, Senior! I’m Su Yang!
W: I know.
Looking at those two words, Su Yang felt her heart rate start to accelerate again.
She held her phone like she was holding some rare treasure, suddenly not knowing what to reply.
Just then, the other party sent another message.
W: Thank you for earlier.
Su Yang hurriedly typed: You’re welcome! It’s what I should do!
W: Rest early, goodnight.
Su Yang: Goodnight, Senior!
After sending the message, Su Yang stood there clutching her phone and giggling for a good while before heading back to her own dorm, feeling completely satisfied.
Upstairs, standing by the window watching Su Yang’s departing figure, Wen Yusheng slowly put down her phone.
She watched the tall figure walk further and further away under the streetlights, her lips curving into a meaningful smile.
A free, on-call “bodyguard” who is also utterly devoted.
It seemed like a very good deal indeed.
Wen Yusheng turned, walked to her desk, and opened her laptop.
The screen lit up. She clicked on an encrypted folder and created a new document.
The title of the document was:
“Manual for the Observation and Utilization of Su Yang.”
