- Chapter 4 - First Encounter. Picking Up a Puppy
Wen Yusheng’s thoughts drifted back to half a year ago.
It was a dusk entirely different from tonight; there were no exquisite dishes from a high-end restaurant, nor was there the hypocritical socializing of the glittering social elite. There was only the lingering glow of the setting sun and gusts of evening wind carrying the scent of green grass.
That afternoon, Wen Yusheng had just finished a “family meeting” at the university cafe that could only be described as a disaster.
Calling it a family meeting was a stretch; in reality, it was just her half-brother using their father’s name as a pretext to once again pressure and warn her.
“Yusheng, it’s not that I’m picking on you, but it’s really not good for a girl to be showing her face in public so much. As for the company’s affairs, with your uncles around and me, you should just focus on your studies. In the future, finding a good family to marry into is better than anything else.”
Her nominal brother, Wen Zigang, sat with his legs crossed, putting on an air of earnest concern while the contempt and calculation in his eyes remained undisguised.
Wen Yusheng simply stirred the already cold coffee in front of her in silence, saying nothing.
She knew that what Wen Zigang truly wanted to say was for her to give up the company shares her mother had left her and to get out of the Wen family’s center of power entirely.
“Your mother was confused back then. A woman understands nothing about business management. Those shares are a waste in your hands; it’s better to transfer them to your brother. I guarantee you won’t be lacking for benefits in the future.” Seeing her silence, Wen Zigang’s tone became even more blatant.
Wen Yusheng finally looked up. She looked at this man who shared half of her blood, and the corners of her mouth curled into a frigid arc.
“Are you finished?” Her voice was soft, yet it sounded as if it were quenched in ice. “If you’re finished, please leave. I have a class; I don’t have time to listen to you farting here.”
Wen Zigang’s face instantly turned ashen.
“Wen Yusheng! Don’t refuse a gesture of goodwill!”
“Dignity is something you earn yourself, not something given by others.” Wen Yusheng stood up and pressed a few banknotes under the coffee cup. “This coffee is on me; consider it a way to disinfect that foul mouth of yours.”
Having said that, she left the cafe without looking back, leaving Wen Zigang’s roars and curses far behind her.
Stepping out of the cafe, Wen Yusheng felt as if she had just fought a war; the strength in her entire body had been drained.
She walked slowly along the secluded gallery of the campus, her high heels making a lonely clicking sound against the bluestone pavement.
Tall camphor trees lined both sides of the gallery, and the twilight glow filtered through the layers of leaves, casting dappled shadows on the ground.
Wen Yusheng found an empty bench and sat down, taking her phone out of her bag to call her assistant.
“Hello, Sister Li. Help me look up the project in the west of the city that Wen Zigang has been following recently. Get all the information—the more detailed, the better. Send it to my email within half an hour.”
Her voice was calm and decisive, making her seem like a completely different person from the exhausted girl she had been moments ago.
After hanging up, Wen Yusheng finally felt the irritability pressing on her chest ease slightly.
She leaned back against the bench and closed her eyes, wanting to let her mind go blank for a while.
But those annoying voices still forced their way into her head uncontrollably.
Wen Zigang’s threats, the faces of those old foxes on the board of directors, and her father’s eternal attitude of trying to smooth things over…
All of it was like a giant net, trapping her firmly within and making it difficult to breathe.
Just as she was so frustrated that she wanted to throw her phone away, a voice suddenly sounded above her head.
“Um… Classmate, are you okay?”
It was a very clear female voice, tinged with a hint of uncertainty.
Wen Yusheng snapped her eyes open.
Greeting her sight was an unfamiliar face.
It was a very tall girl wearing sweat-soaked sportswear. Her hair was tied in a sharp high ponytail, and the stray hairs at her forehead were dampened by sweat, clinging tightly to her smooth brow.
The girl’s skin was very fair—the kind of healthy paleness that comes from year-round exercise. Her features weren’t particularly stunning, but together they appeared exceptionally clean and refreshing. Especially her eyes; they were clear and bright, like a spring in a mountain valley, reflecting a sort of unworldly purity.
Wen Yusheng was stunned for a moment.
She didn’t know this girl.
“Is something the matter?” Wen Yusheng’s tone was cold, carrying the displeasure of being disturbed.
The girl seemed to be choked by her coldness, scratching her head somewhat awkwardly.
“I… I just saw you sitting here for a long time, and your complexion didn’t look very good. I thought you might be sick.” The girl’s voice was a bit low, sounding as if she lacked confidence.
Only then did Wen Yusheng realize that because she had been angry, her expression must have looked terrible.
She frowned, not wanting to waste words on a stranger.
“I’m fine.” She coldly dropped those three words and then lowered her head to continue looking at her phone, making it clear she didn’t want to talk further.
The girl stood there, seemingly embarrassed.
She looked at Wen Yusheng’s face, which was practically written with “Do Not Approach,” then looked at the clearly expensive dress she was wearing. After hesitating for a few seconds, she ultimately did not leave.
“Um…” the girl spoke again, her voice even softer than before. “Are you in some kind of trouble? Was someone bullying you just now?”
Wen Yusheng looked up, a trace of impatience in her eyes.
Does this girl not understand human speech?
“I said, I’m fine.”
“But I just saw a man chase you out of the cafe and shout several curses in this direction!” The girl grew anxious, her speaking speed picking up. “That guy clearly isn’t anything good! Were you being harassed by him? Do you want me to help you call the police?”
Only then did Wen Yusheng realize the situation.
It turned out this girl had seen the scene of Wen Zigang chasing her out to curse at her and had mistaken her for an ignorant young girl being harassed by an outsider.
Wen Yusheng found it somewhat amusing.
How long had it been since she was “protected” like this?
Ever since her mother passed away, she had learned to use a hard shell to disguise herself, learning to use coldness and detachment to confront the world. Everyone thought of her as the high-and-mighty eldest daughter of the Wen family, a shrewd and capable career woman, but no one had ever asked her if she was afraid or if she needed help.
And this girl in front of her, a total stranger, actually wanted to stand up for her because of a few curses.
Should she call her naive, or just foolish?
“That was my brother,” Wen Yusheng explained plainly, not wanting the misunderstanding to continue.
“Ah? Your brother?” The girl was stunned, clearly not expecting that answer. “A biological brother? How could a brother curse at you like that?”
Incredulity was written all over her face, as if she had heard some kind of fairy tale.
Looking at her indignant expression, the irritability in Wen Yusheng’s heart miraculously dissipated a bit further.
She suddenly felt that the silly girl in front of her was quite interesting.
“Every family has its own skeletons,” Wen Yusheng replied neutrally.
The girl seemed to realize she had asked too much and closed her mouth sheepishly.
But she still didn’t leave; she just stood there straight in front of Wen Yusheng, like a utility pole.
Wen Yusheng felt a bit uncomfortable being watched like that.
“Do you still have something?”
“I… I’m afraid your brother might come back to cause more trouble,” the girl said softly. “I’ll stay here with you for a while. With an extra person, he probably won’t dare to do anything reckless.”
Wen Yusheng looked at her, unable to speak for a long time.
She had seen too much fawning over power and too much kicking people when they were down. Pure, unadulterated kindness like this was something she hadn’t felt in a very long time.
“What is your name?” Wen Yusheng asked on an impulse.
“Ah? Me?” The girl froze for a moment before reacting, a huge smile breaking out on her face. “My name is Su Yang, a first-year freshman specializing in badminton at the Physical Education College!”
When she smiled, her eyes curved into two crescents, and a sharp little tiger tooth peeked out from the corner of her mouth. She looked like a glowing little sun—free of shadows, passionate and sincere.
In that instant, Wen Yusheng’s heart felt as though it had been gently tapped by something.
So it was her.
That figure she had seen running on the playground.
“Wen Yusheng,” she offered her own name. “School of Management, third year.”
“Hello, Senior Wen!” Su Yang immediately stood at attention, like a soldier waiting for inspection.
Seeing her acting so silly, the corners of Wen Yusheng’s mouth uncontrollably tilted up into a tiny arc.
“You don’t need to be so nervous.”
“Hehe.” Su Yang scratched her head, returning to that goofy manner.
Silence fell between the two again.
But this time, the silence was no longer so awkward.
Su Yang just stood to the side like a loyal knight, occasionally glancing around vigilantly.
Wen Yusheng kept her head down, processing emails on her phone.
The twilight glow stretched their shadows very long, overlapping them to create a strange yet harmonious image.
After an unknown amount of time, Wen Yusheng finished all her work.
She looked up and found that Su Yang was still standing there, motionless.
“You’re still not leaving?” Wen Yusheng asked.
“I’ll leave after you do,” Su Yang said as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
Looking at her, a mischievous thought suddenly sprouted in Wen Yusheng’s mind.
She stood up, intentionally acting frail and knitting her brows. “I feel a bit unwell; my head is so dizzy.”
Upon hearing this, Su Yang immediately became anxious.
“Senior, what’s wrong? Is it heatstroke? Or were you just angered by your brother?” As she spoke, she reached out to support Wen Yusheng.
Wen Yusheng didn’t dodge.
She allowed Su Yang’s arm to hold her up.
Su Yang’s arm was very firm; through the thin fabric, Wen Yusheng could feel the strength contained beneath.
“I’ll walk you back to your dorm!” Su Yang said decisively.
“Mm.” Wen Yusheng gave a soft hum, leaning the majority of her weight against Su Yang.
Su Yang had a very pleasant scent—a mix of sweat and sunshine, clean and refreshing.
Leaning against her shoulder and breathing in that scent, Wen Yusheng felt her heart, which had become weary from family strife, miraculously calm down.
She thought, picking up a silly little puppy doesn’t seem… too bad.
Just as Wen Yusheng was immersed in this novel experience, her phone suddenly rang.
It was a call from Wen Zigang.
Wen Yusheng frowned and pressed the answer button, her tone icy: “What is it?”
Wen Zigang’s exasperated voice came from the other end: “Wen Yusheng! You think you’re so capable now, don’t you! How dare you hang up on me! I’m telling you, don’t even think about touching that project in the west of the city! I’ve already spoken to Dad, and he’s agreed to hand the project over to me!”
Wen Yusheng’s face darkened instantly.
Before she could even open her mouth, Su Yang, who was beside her, suddenly snatched her phone away.
Under Wen Yusheng’s stunned gaze, Su Yang spoke into the phone with a voice full of vigor and an exploding sense of justice, shouting.
“Hey! Who are you?! You are not allowed to harass Senior Wen anymore! Otherwise, I… I’ll call the police and have you arrested!”
