Chapter 1: The Insomniac Alpha Who Fears Omegas
Qi Yan was suffering from insomnia again.
He was originally a chronic insomniac; since he turned eighteen, he had rarely had a good night’s sleep. On the rare occasions he did sleep soundly, according to his family, he began to exhibit a habit of sleepwalking.
Once, in the middle of the night, he put on a full martial arts display in the living room. He accidentally mistook his cousin, who was sneaking back home, for a burglar. With a swift grappling move, he pinned his cousin to the floor with a loud “thud.”
The noise woke the entire household. They watched cautiously as the sleepwalking Qi Yan disciplined his cousin; no one dared to interrupt.
“Aaah! I was wrong! Brother, I was wrong! Grandpa, Grandma, Dad, Mom, Aunt, Sis—save me! I’ll never climb over the wall to go out and play in the middle of the night again!!!”
Ghost-like wails for help echoed through the house. The uncle, who had originally prepared to whip out his “Seven Wolves” leather belt for when his son returned, silently tucked it away.
Forget it, he thought. The kid looks too pitiful; I can’t bring myself to do it. Besides, he probably won’t dare to sneak out and mess around in the middle of the night ever again.
From then on, every time Qi Yan slept, he locked his door firmly to avoid pinning the entire family to the floor.
After starting university, Qi Yan stayed in the dorms for a while, but to prevent accidents, he got a medical check-up report and applied to live off-campus.
Although he successfully moved out and rarely stayed in the dorms, Qi Yan maintained a harmonious relationship with his three roommates. They were often in the same group for classes, experiments, and reports, and they occasionally hung out, maintaining a friendly bond.
This continued until he became a graduate student. Qi Yan, who usually lived off-campus, recently ran into a bit of trouble: a new neighbor moved in next door and spent three days clattering and banging through renovations.
He lived in a building with two units per floor. He had heard that the units above, below, and across from him were unoccupied, so now that a neighbor had finally arrived, there was no one else to remind them to be quiet.
However, moving is moving; a little noise is understandable. Qi Yan had a good personality and no interest in looking for trouble but that was only his initial thought.
Qi Yan returned home after a long, exhausting day. He took a sleeping pill and endured half the night, finally about to drift off near dawn when..
“CLANG! CLANG!” Two massive bangs startled Qi Yan, causing him to snap his eyes open. The sleepiness he had fought so hard to gain was completely driven away.
“They’re moving in, doing some renovations. It’s understandable.”
The first time, Qi Yan was very understanding, facing the bleak morning with a smile.
“BOOM! BOOM!”
On the second morning, Qi Yan bumped his head against the headboard as he woke up. After waiting for ten minutes, the noise vanished.
“It’s fine. There’s still a little time. Go back to sleep.”
He couldn’t sleep. He stared at the ceiling with his eyes wide open.
On the third morning, “DING-CLANG!” A loud crash sounded, as if something heavy had been smashed down.
The half-awake Qi Yan instinctively jumped out of bed with agility. The world was silent.
It had been three days. Even a saint wouldn’t be able to endure this.
“Three times is the limit.”
Just as Qi Yan was about to go out and talk to his neighbor, he was interrupted by a phone call. He took a deep breath, answered the call, and by the time it ended, the noise next door had also stopped. He calmed down.
He heard the new neighbor was an Omega. Three days should be enough time for them to finish renovating, right?
And it’s an Omega…
Qi Yan thought about it and comforted himself helplessly, “Forget it. I’ll just treat it as a morning alarm.”
The cowardly university student hesitated.
His heart hardened for a second as he comforted himself: It’s definitely not because I’m afraid of Omegas.
But he was a graduate student now—who in their right mind wakes up at 6:30 AM for no reason?!
Even an 8:00 AM class isn’t this early. He hoped there wouldn’t be a fourth time. For now, he sent a message to property management to give them a reminder.
Another early morning.
Having not slept well for three consecutive days, a listless Qi Yan walked as if he were floating. Wearing his pale lab coat, he drifted into the laboratory like a white phantom.
Chen Buqian, who happened to be pushing the door open to leave, was startled: “Whoa, brother, what did you do last night?”
“Looking at that expression of yours, you look like you fought all night. If I didn’t know better, I’d think you were that ‘Time Management Master’ playboy Alpha from the class next door who spends all day at the bar!” Chen Buqian stroked his chin, sizing up Qi Yan.
When he first entered school, Qi Yan was a handsome, sunny Alpha. Now that he was in grad school, he was gradually turning into a decadent, melancholic type.
Those peach blossom eyes, which were said to look affectionate even when looking at a dog, were half-closed. His dark circles stood out exaggeratedly against his cold, pale skin.
“You say that as if you don’t spend every day at the bar. I’m just suffering from insomnia.”
Qi Yan yawned as he walked past Chen Buqian. The lab coat he usually wore neatly was unbuttoned for once, looking casual and tired.
Chen Buqian followed his lead, concerned: “Your insomnia has been much worse lately. Are you sure you don’t want to see a psychologist?”
“I’ve seen one before. It didn’t work.” Qi Yan checked his experimental records with a weary face.
The reason for his insomnia was too exaggerated; Qi Yan didn’t have the face to tell anyone.
The only time he spoke about it was in his senior year of high school. His uncle took him to a psychologist, but it had no effect. On the contrary, the psychologist ended up getting punched for trying to hypnotize him.
Since then, Qi Yan felt there was no need to see a psychologist.
It wasn’t that he couldn’t sleep at all, but as soon as he closed his eyes, he would think of those gorgeous, ambiguous dreamscapes. The dreams brought an gloomy, oppressive sense of heaviness that sat leaden on his chest, leaving him with no desire to sleep.
“If it really doesn’t work, why don’t you just find an Omega to date? Langlang has plenty of experience, and even she said it’s easier to fall asleep while holding an Omega. After all, an Omega’s pheromones can soothe a restless Alpha. It’s perfect for you.”
Chen Buqian offered a suggestion.
The hand Qi Yan used to hold his pen paused. He refused: “Don’t give me such rotten ideas. That’s impossible.”
He hadn’t even settled his own private affairs, yet he was thinking of finding an Omega for “soothing” that would be disrespectful to the other party and to himself.
Furthermore, the Omega in his dreams had too much of an impact on him. Now, he had a bit of a psychological shadow regarding Omegas. He didn’t want to be involved with them at all, let alone date one.
He only wanted to stay far away from them the further, the better.
Commonly known as: “Omega-phobia.”
However, Qi Yan refused to admit he was afraid of Omegas.
“How is this a rotten idea?” Chen Buqian looked disapproving. “You research pheromones yourself. Don’t you feel like your current condition is actually very similar to an Alpha who has fallen into a rut after losing his Omega?”
After saying this, Chen Buqian suddenly realized something and observed Qi Yan as if he’d had an epiphany: “Qi Yan, you haven’t actually marked an Omega and then been abandoned, leading to…”
“SNAP!”
Qi Yan closed his notebook with a crisp sound, interrupting Chen Buqian.
He looked up at Chen Buqian, his peach blossom eyes full of dangerous warning: “It is just simple, ordinary insomnia. Please do not speculate wildly.”
“Your reaction is a bit big, huh? Did I hit the mark? I didn’t expect the ‘pure and jade-like’ male god in everyone’s eyes to actually…” Chen Buqian chuckled, believing he was right.
He wore a lewd expression: “Don’t worry, there are only the two of us in the lab. There won’t be a third—”
“No, you’re wrong again.”
Qi Yan shook his notebook and pat Chen Buqian’s shoulder with regret: “There is a third party in the lab. Even if his presence isn’t strong, don’t ignore it.”
The lab was empty except for the cold experimental equipment. Qi Yan’s sudden comment made Chen Buqian feel a bit chilled.
“There’s nobody here. Don’t scare me.”
“There.” Qi Yan pointed to someone in the corner.
A person with zero presence, wearing a white lab coat over a white hooded sweatshirt, was huddled in the corner writing experimental records. His presence was low, and he had a somewhat eerie aura.
“Hello…”
“Holy crap!” Looking over suddenly was quite startling. Chen Buqian jumped: “When did this kid show up here?”
“He’s been here the whole time. He greeted me when I walked in; you’re the one who ignored him.” Qi Yan put on his gloves and walked toward the biochemical lab. “I’m going to check the samples first.”
Chen Buqian looked at his back and continued: “Hey, Qi Yan, don’t forget what we just talked about. There’s a mixer tonight. If you want to go, give me a call. Maybe you’ll find an Omega you click with.”
“You guys have mixers every day. There’s no such thing as ‘tonight happens to have one’.” Qi Yan criticized.
Chen Buqian laughed loudly: “Just come! The old place, ‘Happy Bar,’ is waiting for you.”
“I refuse.”
Qi Yan’s original intention didn’t change. He braced himself to check the experimental samples. Being without sleep for three days was a terrible state; he didn’t even dare touch things carelessly, fearing his previous efforts would go to waste.
After writing his records and exchanging a few words with the classmate in the corner, he left. Ignoring Chen Buqian’s invitation for the night, Qi Yan returned to his apartment early. Next door was unexpectedly quiet.
Is the renovation over? This was a good time to sleep.
Qi Yan decisively changed his clothes, took a sleeping pill, lay on the bed, closed his eyes, and started to sleep.
Perhaps because he hadn’t had a good night’s sleep in three days, this time Qi Yan successfully fell asleep in only half an hour.
The familiar dream appeared. He stood in the middle of a room that was both strange and familiar, his head slightly lowered, his mood beyond terrible.
As expected, it came again.
Qi Yan took a deep breath and looked toward the sofa. An Omega was sitting there—
He wore a well-tailored black suit. He had a slender build and sat on the sofa with one long leg crossed over the other in an arrogant posture. His fingertips were slowly loosening his tie, revealing a black pheromone isolation collar around his fair neck. It made people not dare to underestimate him; his aura caused the surrounding air to thicken, bringing the pressure and deterrence of someone in a superior position.
The lights on the ceiling were too bright, so much so that Qi Yan couldn’t even see the other person’s face clearly. The Omega seemed to be saying something, his nonchalant voice full of sarcasm.
It was too harsh; he didn’t want to listen, nor did he want to see his face.
The dream proceeded according to the script. Regardless of what the other person said, across a layer of ethereal dreamscape, Qi Yan was easily provoked to anger by the Omega. So, he stepped forward and pulled him off the sofa.
“…Fine, then we’ll do as you say.”
The Omega, who had been maintaining a cold indifference, hadn’t expected him to say that. He felt a moment of astonishment and only reacted after being grabbed by the wrist and pulled into the room, then thrown onto the bed.
Seeing Qi Yan take the remaining three boxes of condoms from the drawer, the Omega propped himself up with his elbows. His face, which was already unclear, was even harder to see in the dim room. He seemed to be smiling.
Mocking him sarcastically.
“You said it yourself—if I use them all tonight, I can leave,” Qi Yan said.
The Omega’s smile stopped abruptly. His dark eyes stared at him. After a while, for some reason, the original cold mask was shattered and became neurotic. As if provoked by Qi Yan, he suddenly grabbed something from the bedside table and threw it at him.
Qi Yan turned his head to dodge, a gust of wind passing by.
“CRASH!” The object fell to the ground, making a sharp, crisp sound of breaking. Glass shards flew everywhere, making a pitter-patter sound.
His forehead was unfortunately grazed by a sharp piece. A stinging pain came, but Qi Yan didn’t make a sound.
The room was too dark for the Omega to notice. He extended his leg to kick him, wanting to roll off the bed.
Qi Yan was quick to grab his foot, forcibly changing the Omega’s posture and forcing him to kneel on the bed. He pinned both of the Omega’s hands behind his back and used the loose tie from the suit, wrapping it tightly around both wrists so the Omega could hardly move.
This Omega was clearly not as gentle and weak as ordinary Omegas. His frame seemed thin but was actually powerful. The black suit jacket was pulled down to his arms by Qi Yan, effectively controlling the range of his struggles.
The neon lights from outside the window fell into the room. The white shirt clung to the Omega’s skin, allowing Qi Yan to clearly see the shoulder blades on his back. The lines were smooth and beautiful, rising and falling because of his struggling, making it look even more alluring. Following the beautiful lines of the back downward, the Omega’s waist was tight and powerful, yet currently unable to move.
Furthermore, the crisp suit trousers outlined a firm and full curve. With the waist pressed down, the marks of the shirt garters on his thighs were faintly visible, making it hard to look away. The Omega was turned away from him in such an ambiguous and tempting posture that no Alpha could endure it.
Yet Qi Yan seemed to have no feeling, like a sea in the dark night—silent, yet with surging undercurrents. Blood from his forehead flowed to his eye, and beads of blood accumulated on his eyelashes before rolling down.
He didn’t notice until the red blurred his vision.
Qi Yan calmly wiped the blood droplets from his eyelashes and continued to tear open the boxes, throwing all three boxes of condoms by the bedside for easy access at any time, not wanting to waste a moment.
The quantity was a bit much, but it should be doable. It wouldn’t kill anyone.
Once tonight was over, he could leave. If he moved quickly, he might even make the 7:00 AM flight.
The Omega was kneeling on the bed, his breathing a bit hurried and incredibly humiliated. As if insulted, he glared back at him angrily, seemingly cursing him.
“Don’t worry. I’ll use the posture you like, so you don’t have to see this face of mine that makes you nauseous.”
“I’ll wear the protection properly; I won’t enter the reproductive chamber.”
“I won’t get you dirty, either.”
Qi Yan spoke as if he hadn’t heard a thing. His gaze moved up inch by inch from the Omega’s slender back, landing on his fair, elegant neck.
The black pheromone isolation collar was buckled over the gland on the back of the neck, making the skin look even whiter. it carried a hint of forbidden temptation, but it also effectively controlled the pheromones, ensuring not a single drop would leak. It also prevented an Alpha, upon losing control, from biting the gland and forcibly marking him.
What did this Omega’s pheromones smell like?
Qi Yan didn’t know. They had lived together for quite some time, and despite having been to bed and made love, Qi Yan still didn’t know.
The Omega loathed him, so he took his precautions very well, never leaking a single bit of pheromones.
