The Daily Face-Slapping of the Junior Tutor - Chapter 7
Gu Jintang dove headfirst into the giant steamer, grabbing several more buns and stuffing them into her mouth. Lu Nan, witnessing this scene, nearly exploded with rage.
She rushed forward and seized Gu Jintang’s hand, but Gu Jintang continued to act wildly. Seizing the moment Lu Nan lost her composure, she smeared Lu Nan’s face with greasy bun oil.
Lu Nan, feeling the oily residue on her face, froze in shock and released Gu Jintang’s hand.
Gu Jintang immediately slipped free, disappearing into the crowd.
Still reeling from the shock, Lu Nan wiped her face, staring at the greasy meat filling coating her hand. Her pupils constricted, and her entire body began to tremble uncontrollably.
How dare she treat me like this! How dare she…
Just as Lu Nan was about to faint from fury, the bun stall owner grabbed her arm, grinning. “Pay up!”
The owner had witnessed everything. This sucker was paying a fortune, so she hadn’t stopped Gu Jintang from grabbing the buns, secretly thinking, Today’s my lucky day!
Lu Nan was on the verge of fainting from anger, yet she still had to pull out her shriveled silver pouch. “It’s gone.”
The shopkeeper’s eyes widened. “What do you mean, ‘gone’?! You’ll pay me back!” The burly woman grabbed Lu Nan by her muscular arms and shook her violently.
Stars danced before Lu Nan’s eyes as she nearly lost her footing. With a furious shove, she pushed the shopkeeper away, her face contorted into a twisted, sinister expression. “Gu Jintang! You’ll pay for this!”
She had never been so humiliated. These past few days had been nothing but suffering, all thanks to that damned Gu Jintang.
When she caught her, she’d give her a beating she’d never forget!
“You can’t leave! You owe me money! We’re just a small business—you can’t skip out on your bill!”
“Get out of my way!” Lu Nan swore for the first time.
“She ate without paying! Someone kind, please report her to the authorities!”
By now, Gu Jintang had already fled far away, but she could still hear the commotion growing louder behind her. Lu Nan must be getting held up. Gu Jintang smirked smugly.
Hmph, dared to sic her dog on me? This is karma.
Now that she had shaken off Lu Nan, Gu Jintang needed to find a way to escape. Where should she go? Yunzhou City was no longer safe. She needed to find an even more remote and impoverished place, somewhere Lu Nan would never think to look.
Gu Jintang ran three streets in one breath, twisting and turning down narrow alleys until she reached a secluded side street. There, she immediately began to disguise herself. Back in the modern world, she had been the dorm’s top comedic cosplayer, even beauty vloggers had to admit defeat in her presence. Transforming her appearance was child’s play for her.
In moments, she had transformed into a ragged, disheveled beggar with a dirt-streaked face.
Her eyes darted around as she approached a gathering of beggars huddled together, holding out their tattered bowls to beg for alms.
“Big sister, I wanted to ask…”
“Get lost! Don’t try to steal our territory!” The beggars’ pitiful expressions shattered instantly, replaced by fierce, menacing glares.
Gu Jintang shrank back, but she mustered her courage and pressed on. “I’m not trying to steal your business. I just need to get out of the city, but I have nothing with me…”
“That’s easy,” the beggar woman said. “Just follow this street straight ahead. There’s a ferry crossing at the end. You’ll find plenty of cargo ships there. You can sneak onto one—even if you’re caught, they’ll just kick you off. But make sure you know where the ship is headed…”
“Thank you, Big Sister,” Gu Jintang said gratefully, then slowly made her way toward the ferry crossing.
Meanwhile, Lu Nan had been arrested by patrol officers on the street for “disturbing the peace” and dragged back to the Yamen.
Forced to reveal her identity, Lu Nan snapped, “How dare you! I am Lu Nan, the Grand Tutor, a second-rank official of the imperial court! Release me immediately!”
The officer spat. “You? As if you could impersonate Grand Tutor Lu! Our Grand Tutor Lu is like the bright moon, unattainable, with unparalleled grace and wisdom, a hero who captivates all! Don’t insult the Grand Tutor in my heart! Move along now!”
Hearing these words, Lu Nan rolled her eyes, her heart a mix of emotions. They were praising her virtues, yet she couldn’t find any joy in it.
She had no choice but to follow the constables into the Yamen. After crossing the main gate, she quickly shoved them aside and charged straight into the main hall.
Lu Nan kicked the door open. The Prefect, who was inside handling official business, jumped in fright and roared, “How dare you! Guards, seize her!”
In an instant, Lu Nan flashed before him, her face icy and sharp. “Silence!”
She slammed her Official Token onto the table with a resounding thud. “I order you to immediately seal the city gates and waterways. This official is searching for someone!”
The Prefect’s eyes widened as he recognized the Official Token. He glanced at Lu Nan’s face, then bowed and scraped, “Yes, yes, this humble official will see to it immediately…”
The Prefect’s heart ached. He had barely stepped out when he ran into those two clueless constables.
The constables, panting heavily, reported, “Prefect, a rogue claiming to be Grand Tutor Lu broke in just now. She…”
“Silence! She is Grand Tutor Lu! You two… get out of my sight!”
The constables froze, staring at the disheveled woman standing by the door with her hands clasped behind her back. She looked nothing like the Grand Tutor they had imagined.
Lu Nan was the goddess in the hearts of men and women, young and old, across the nation! Her reputation for beauty and virtue was legendary; to them, she was like a sacred, inviolable snow lotus, utterly pure and holy.
Yet here she was, reduced to this disheveled state. The two constables’ jaws nearly dropped.
Lu Nan raised her head, glanced at them coldly, and snorted. If you can’t even recognize me like this, you might as well gouge out your eyes.
But she had no time to waste on such trivial matters. Her priority was finding Gu Jintang. She still believed Gu Jintang was feigning ignorance, perhaps even planning to flee the city.
Hmph! When I catch that corrupt official, I’ll break her leg first. Let’s see if she dares to run again.
At that moment, Gu Jintang sneezed, a sudden chill running through her.
She crept to the ferry dock, gazing at the vast, endless river and the massive, majestic ships that plied its waters. She marveled at the ingenuity of the ancients.
This matriarchal world was as advanced as the peak of ancient history she had studied, boasting both the bustling prosperity of the Tang Dynasty’s golden age and the rich, high-quality lifestyle of the Southern Song era.
If even the remote Yunzhou City was this prosperous, she wondered what unimaginable opulence awaited in the Capital.
Unfortunately, that place was swarming with enemies, making it impossible for her to go there. Gu Jintang’s heart ached with anguish as she secretly cursed Lu Nan for being so vile and shameless, determined to make her life miserable.
As for the Tiger Tally? Hmph, what concern was that of hers? She wasn’t some corrupt official like the original owner of this body.
Gu Jintang watched the ships docked along the shore, where laborers were busy loading and unloading cargo. After careful observation, she selected the most inconspicuous small boat.
Judging by its appearance, the boat seemed to be preparing to head downstream. The further she traveled from the Capital, the better. Seizing a moment when no one was watching, Gu Jintang slipped into the cabin. Inside, wooden crates were piled high, their contents unknown.
Just as she was pondering this, government soldiers surrounded the boat, shouting, “Seal off the waterways! Inspect all vessels!”
Gu Jintang trembled in fear and hastily hid inside one of the crates. Unbeknownst to her, the boat quietly cast off its mooring ropes and surged downstream at breakneck speed…
