“Sit.” Lou Qing gestured for the girl to take a seat on the sofa, then opened the refrigerator and asked, “What would you like to drink?”
Lu Huan felt a bit embarrassed. “Just mineral water is fine.” After speaking, she scratched her cheek with her index finger, feeling somewhat uneasy.
“Here.”
Lu Huan reached out to take it and said softly, “Thank you.” To ease the awkwardness, she wanted to take a sip of water to calm herself, only to find that the bottle cap had already been unscrewed. Surprised, she looked up at the woman sitting on the opposite sofa.
The woman sat casually on the sofa, tilting her head back to drink. The movement of her throat as she swallowed was indescribably sensual. Watching her, Lu Huan felt a sudden thirst and swallowed quietly.
Lou Qing, who had been observing her out of the corner of her eye, naturally didn’t miss this. A flicker of amusement crossed her eyes, though her expression remained neutral. “Was there something you needed?” she asked.
This was the question Lou Qing had wanted to ask ever since she first saw the girl downstairs. However, the earlier scene had distracted her, and she couldn’t resist teasing the girl a little. Seeing the girl’s reaction had brought her such delight that she’d momentarily forgotten to ask.
“I…” Lu Huan’s hand, clutching the water bottle, trembled with nervousness. In her tension, she tightened her grip, and a soft “crack” echoed sharply in the quiet room.
This only made Lu Huan even more nervous, her face flushing red.
Lou Qing was genuinely worried the girl might overheat from embarrassment, so she changed the subject. “How did things go with your girlfriend yesterday?”
“Huh?” The topic shift was too abrupt, and Lu Huan’s mind couldn’t keep up. She stared blankly at Lou Qing.
Her flushed cheeks and eyes glistening with warmth made her look like a startled deer. Lou Qing’s heartbeat skipped a beat, then quickened. Even after drinking water, her mouth felt dry again.
Seeing the girl’s confusion, she repeated the question.
Lu Huan frowned, her lips unconsciously puffing out slightly as she lowered her gaze to the bottle in her hand.
Every emotion was written plainly on the girl’s face. Lou Qing, sitting across from her and observing her closely, found it utterly endearing. Her throat felt a bit itchy, and she cleared it before saying, “You don’t have to talk about it if you don’t want to.” She then stood up and added, “Are you hungry? Let me get you some snacks.”
“We broke up,” the girl’s dejected voice came from behind her. “I was the one who ended it.”
Lou Qing paused mid-step but quickly recovered, retrieving a few packs of snacks from a nearby cabinet and placing them on the coffee table in front of Lu Huan. In a light tone, she said, “Breaking up might be for the best. Students should focus on their studies.”
She assumed the girl’s despondency was due to lingering feelings for the relationship.
“In high school, I was bullied by my classmates. She was the one who saved me,” Lu Huan continued, still keeping her head lowered as if lost in memories.
Lou Qing didn’t move, but her expression showed surprise as she looked at the girl. She couldn’t imagine someone so well-behaved being bullied. Yet, recalling how bullies often targeted the vulnerable, she curled her lips into a faint, cold smile.
“She pursued me for several months and confessed to me multiple times,” Lu Huan said, her voice heavy. This was something she had never shared with anyone before. She had no friends and didn’t dare mention it to her family. Yet, here she was, confiding in a woman she had only met once.
Perhaps it was the sense of security the other person gave her, or perhaps it was because this woman had rescued her yesterday. Whatever the reason, her guarded heart had loosened its defenses just a little.
“I’m actually really annoyed.” Lu Huan looked up at the woman across from her and said, “I know she doesn’t like girls.”
This nearly made Lou Qing choke on her water. She looked surprised, clearly unaware that young girls these days were so bold.
“But she got beaten up while saving me and ended up in the hospital, so I agreed to her confession.” As she said this, the girl lowered her gaze.
Lou Qing fell silent, feeling the weight of the situation the girl described.
“But I told her we’d just give it a try.” Lu Huan gently pinched the bottle in her hand. “Last night, I ended things with her.”
Lou Qing thought of the sarcastic girl from last night who acted like she’d been cheated on and didn’t know what to say.
“I got the short end of the stick,” Lou Qing said.
Lu Huan’s thoughts were interrupted by those four words, leaving her momentarily confused.
“If I’d known she was like that, I wouldn’t have let her call me ‘auntie’ or ‘the other woman’ last night.” Lou Qing sighed with a pained expression.
Lu Huan burst out laughing.
Seeing her laugh, Lou Qing continued pretending to be upset. “She even said I was an old cow eating young grass, am I an old cow?” She pointed at herself in disbelief.
Lu Huan laughed so hard she collapsed onto the sofa, shaking her head and gasping for breath. “Sister, you’re the young grass.”
Lou Qing couldn’t keep up the act either. Hearing the girl’s assessment, even with her thick skin, she couldn’t help but laugh and teased back, “Then are you the old cow?”
It was the first time Lu Huan had been called an old cow, and her eyes widened in shock. The sight made Lou Qing cover her face, laughing as she tilted her head to look at her. “Feeling better now?”
Lu Huan froze, her face turning bright red. She sat up from the sofa, glanced hesitantly at the woman, and gave a small nod.
Seeing the girl cheer up, Lou Qing felt better too. She stood up, walked over, and placed a hand on the girl’s head, gently ruffling her hair. “You can repay a life-saving favor in other ways, but your own feelings are priceless.”
Lu Huan looked up at her with sparkling eyes.
Lou Qing calmly withdrew her hand, but her evasive gaze betrayed her inner thoughts.
Lu Huan felt an urge to tackle the woman, she was just too adorable.
“Boss.” Xiao Mu’s voice came from outside the door. She peeked in with a gossipy look but said, “Someone’s here to see you downstairs.”
“Scheduled appointment?” Lou Qing started to leave but remembered Lu Huan was still in the room and paused to glance back.
Lu Huan stood up. “I should head back too.”
“Nope.” Xiao Mu said, “It’s a woman I don’t know, acting pretty arrogant, and she brought another girl with her.”
Such people occasionally showed up at the shop, and Lou Qing was used to it, though they always annoyed her. “Got it, I’ll be right down.”
“Okay.” Xiao Mu pulled her head back and closed the door as she went downstairs.
Lu Huan walked over to her and said, “Thank you, sister.” She was grateful for the other’s guidance, which had helped her resolve her tangled feelings.
She was just too well-behaved. Lou Qing couldn’t resist booping her nose. “Study hard.”
Remembering that the other had said the same thing before leaving yesterday, Lu Huan’s eyes curved into a smile as she replied, “Improve every day.”
Lou Qing chuckled.
“By the way, sis,” Lu Huan said, “I’ve washed the clothes, but they won’t be dry until tomorrow. Is it okay if I return them to you the day after tomorrow?”
It was just a set of clothes, not that important, but Lou Qing found herself nodding in agreement almost involuntarily. Then, remembering that the National Day holiday was starting tomorrow, she asked, “Do you have any plans for the holiday?”
Originally, Jiang Wenshu had arranged to take her on a trip around the area during National Day, but after their argument last night, those plans had naturally fallen through.
She shook her head and said, “No plans.”
“Then, would you be interested in going out?” Lou Qing said. “I’ve arranged to go hiking with a few friends Mount Huangshan. It’s just a two-hour drive.”
Lu Huan hesitated slightly. “Wouldn’t that trouble you? Would your friend’s mind?”
Lou Qing had thought the girl was worried about something else, but it turned out to be this. She couldn’t help but laugh and ruffled Lu Huan’s hair again. “Don’t worry about that. Just come along.”
“Okay,” Lu Huan nodded.
As the two left the room, Lou Qing happened to glance downstairs. When she saw the woman sitting in the first-floor reception area, her expression immediately turned cold.
Lu Huan was surprised and followed her gaze, also spotting the person on the first floor.
It was An Ke!
