The Cutie Keeps Falling for the Wrong Girl [Quick Transmigration] - Chapter 33.2
As soon as she stepped out, she ran into Pei Guolong. Instantly, she composed herself, masking all emotion, and said respectfully, “Chairman Pei.”
“Going out?” Pei Guolong initially frowned in displeasure but then seemed to remember something and smiled, patting her shoulder. “Go home and freshen up. We’re having dinner with Young Master Gao tonight. Remember, be on your best behavior.”
Though his words were delivered with a smile, Lu Huan clearly detected a warning in his eyes.
She responded with a noncommittal “Mm,” expressionlessly picked up her bag, and strode away.
Watching her decisive departure, Pei Guolong’s face broke into a satisfied smile. Hands clasped behind his back, he hummed a cheerful tune as he walked away, already thinking about which lover’s place he would spend the night at.
Only after getting into her car did Lu Huan allow her expression to twist with disgust. She couldn’t stand wearing the clothes that had been touched by him, so she tossed her suit jacket into the backseat and drove straight to Xiao Zhao’s Electrical and Plumbing Repair Company.
Li Zhaodi was torn between leaving and staying. If she left, she was afraid the other woman would actually show up, but if she stayed, she was equally afraid she would come.
Clutching her phone, she stood hesitantly in the shop, wondering whether to call and tell the other person not to come. She had a lot to do in the afternoon. In the end, she never made the call because the woman had already driven up to the entrance.
Watching the car window roll down to reveal the woman seated in the driver’s seat, Li Zhaodi stepped forward, her brows slightly furrowed. “Ms. Pei.”
“What, not happy to see me?” Lu Huan pushed the car door open and stepped out. Her high heels clicked as she moved closer, closing the distance between them. In those heels, she stood just as tall as the other woman.
“You’re causing me trouble,” Li Zhaodi said bluntly.
Lu Huan found a stool and sat down, tilting her head back to look at her. “I’m thirsty.”
In the end, Li Zhaodi couldn’t resist the woman’s request. She fetched a disposable cup, filled it with hot water from the dispenser, and handed it over. The water was too hot, so when Lu Huan reached out to take it, Li Zhaodi pulled back and placed the cup on the table, a little farther away. “Wait for it to cool down before drinking.”
“Okay.” Lu Huan simply watched her.
Today, Lu Huan was dressed in professional attire: a black cotton shirt on top, matching suit pants below, and a pair of high heels. A pair of gold-rimmed glasses rested on the bridge of her nose. This elite ensemble stood in stark contrast to the cramped, small, and shabby storefront, making Li Zhaodi even more aware of the vast gap between them.
Li Zhaodi also pulled up a chair and sat down directly in front of Lu Huan. She placed her hands on her knees, straightened her back, and spoke with a serious expression. “Pei Xuan, I have two younger sisters to support. I need to earn a lot of money, so I don’t have time to waste.”
As she spoke these words, her heart sank. There was no denying it, anyone would find it hard to resist the pursuit of such a charming and beautiful woman. But she knew all too well what she needed right now. No, she had known since she was very young, ever since she understood the meaning of her name, that her fate was different from others.
For the past three years, she had been fighting against her destiny to change her life. At this moment, she couldn’t afford to slack off even for a second. Thinking of her two younger sisters back in the remote mountains, her resolve grew even stronger.
“I can help you earn a lot of money right here,” Lu Huan said, looking at her just as seriously.
Li Zhaodi shook her head, her expression calm. “I only have a junior high school diploma. The only thing I know how to do is plumbing and electrical work, and even that was taught to me by my master. I don’t think I’m qualified to work for you.”
When she had first fled the mountains and entered the city, desperate to make money, she had quickly realized that in this day and age, without an education, it was impossible to take even a single step forward. Yet, she had no desire to return to those mountains. Even if she starved to death in this city, she would never go back.
“I can send you back to school and help you learn other skills,” Lu Huan said, watching her.
Li Zhaodi shook her head again, meeting her gaze directly. “Ms. Pei, we have no relationship. What you’re suggesting feels unrealistic to me. Besides, even though I’m poor and uneducated, I know that anyone with a shred of dignity doesn’t accept handouts. The sky doesn’t just drop pies out of nowhere.”
Lu Huan had initially been drawn to this woman because of her eyes, but now she found herself captivated by the soul behind them. Rather than being deterred by Li Zhaodi’s words, she felt an even stronger urge to understand this resilient and clear-minded spirit.
Though, based on the original host’s personality, she should have been decisive chasing what she liked and walking away without hesitation if rejected. But Lu Huan was different. Once she set her sights on someone, unless they were already taken, they would never escape her grasp.
Since the other party had made up their mind, there was no use in her staying any longer. Persisting would only provoke further dislike. It was better to proceed step by step, taking it slow only then could she savor the delicious frog soup.
Just then, the phone in Li Zhaodi’s pocket rang. Lu Huan seized the opportunity to leave first. “If you’re busy, I’ll head off now,” she said, then walked away in her high heels without giving Li Zhaodi a chance to react.
She hadn’t explicitly stated that she wouldn’t continue pursuing her, and Li Zhaodi only realized it belatedly. By the time it dawned on her, the woman had already driven away.
With a client urgently calling, Li Zhaodi had no choice but to refocus and get back to work.
Meanwhile, Lu Huan drove straight home to prepare for her evening meeting with the scumbag Gao Heng.
Tonight’s encounter was crucial.
In the original storyline, although the scumbag Gao Heng was drawn to Pei Xuan’s face and figure, her cold and uninteresting personality left him uninspired. However, to appease his family’s patriarch, he had no choice but to juggle his lovers and spare some time to deal with this woman.
Using the system to check Gao Heng’s information, Lu Huan allowed a faint, almost imperceptible smile to curl at the corner of her lips.
Night fell swiftly, enveloping the city in a dazzling array of colorful lights.
Compared to the daytime, the city at night was a little less noisy.
By the time Lu Huan drove to the restaurant, Gao Heng had already arrived. He sat alone by the window, his back to the entrance, holding a cup as he leisurely sipped his tea.
A waiter led Lu Huan toward him. As she walked, she glanced at the table next to Gao Heng’s, where a woman sat alone. With wavy permed hair and a delicate pinky raised, she sipped her tea while gazing out the window seemingly admiring the view, but in reality, her eyes were fixed on Gao Heng.
Gao Heng had agreed to meet Pei Xuan at his grandfather’s request, but his latest favorite mistress had insisted on tagging along. Doting on her as he was, how could he refuse? And so, the scene unfolded.
Lu Huan pretended not to notice anything as she approached.
Hearing footsteps drawing near, Gao Heng set down his cup. Only when a shadow fell over him did he look up. At the sight of the newcomer, a flicker of admiration crossed his eyes. He rose with a smile and extended his hand in a gentlemanly manner. “Hello, I’m Gao Heng.”
“Pei Xuan,” Lu Huan replied politely, shaking his hand briefly before quickly withdrawing so swiftly that Gao Heng barely had time to react.
Though he felt a tinge of regret at not being able to fully appreciate the softness of the beauty’s hand, the thought of their future interactions sparked a sense of anticipation.
At the neighboring table, the woman gritted her teeth in anger, glaring at Lu Huan as if she were a seductive fox spirit.
Outwardly composed, Lu Huan took a seat opposite Gao Heng while discreetly observing both him and his little lover. Noticing the amusing expression on the mistress’s face, she picked up the tea the waiter had just served and used the act of drinking to conceal the slight upturn of her lips.
Just then, Li Zhaodi, having finished fixing the plumbing for a client, was cycling back to her shop. As she passed the French restaurant, her eyes unconsciously drifted toward the glass facade. There, she spotted the woman who had visited her that afternoon, now changed into different clothes, dining with a well-dressed, elegant man. Instinctively, Li Zhaodi squeezed the brakes.
The old bicycle emitted an unpleasant creaking sound, yet none of it caught Li Zhaodi’s attention her entire focus was fixed on the woman.
It had to be said, that woman was beautiful, the most beautiful Li Zhaodi had ever seen in her life.
And at this moment, that woman was dining alone with a man. There was no need to guess what their relationship was.
The two of them sitting together made for a pleasing sight. Li Zhaodi smiled faintly, withdrew her gaze, and continued pedaling her bicycle forward as if the entire scene had been nothing more than a brief interlude.
Seated at her table, Lu Huan seemed to sense something and glanced out the window.
“What’s wrong?” asked Gao Heng from across the table.
Lu Huan stared at the figure disappearing into the crowd, a flicker of surprise and depth passing through her eyes. Hearing Gao Heng’s question, she reined in all her emotions and replied indifferently, “Nothing.”
From the moment she had entered the restaurant until now, Gao Heng had not seen any expression on her face other than indifference. His initial great interest had now cooled somewhat.
