- Chapter 2 - You Aren't Worthy of Him; He Has No Heart
“Xiao Wu, where is the stuff?”
After circling the room, Qi Ming still had not spotted any delivery boxes. Irritated, he unzipped his leather jacket, revealing a large portion of his chest.
It was the height of summer. Why was the air conditioning set so high? Was this guy out of his mind?
Qi Ming’s skin was a warm ivory, and several hickeys were etched near his chest. To Xiao Wu, they looked like scalding sparks that instantly seared his retinas. Without blinking, he forcibly suppressed the bitterness in his eyes and smiled back with a question.
“Eh? It is not there? I remember bringing it into the house!”
Feigning confusion, Xiao Wu paced around the living room a few times before slapping his forehead and exclaiming, “Oh, I remember now! I was afraid it would get lost, so I put it in the bedroom.”
Qi Ming had never been inside Xiao Wu’s bedroom. Such a private space felt inappropriate to enter uninvited, even though they had been friends for over a decade.
“Fine, just bring it out for me.”
Leaning against the doorframe, Qi Ming arched an eyebrow, signaling for the other to hurry up. He was quite interested in this game; he had heard that only the wealthy could afford to play it. As a poor commoner, he felt he had to give it a try.
Xiao Wu walked over to a giant rectangular cardboard box. He bent down and strained his arms, but after lifting only one side, the box crashed back to the floor with a loud thud.
“Hey, Xiao Wu, what are you dawdling for? You cannot even lift a delivery box? How do you have the nerve to call yourself an Alpha?”
Arms crossed, Qi Ming looked on with utter disdain. He had been genuinely shocked when he first learned Xiao Wu had differentiated into an Alpha upon reaching adulthood. With those thin arms and legs, Qi Ming felt he could take down ten guys like him with a single punch.
And he was just an ordinary Beta!
“Uh, but it is really heavy! I think it is heavier than my refrigerator. It feels like a nutrition pod.”
Then how did you move it in here before?
As if hearing Qi Ming’s thoughts, Xiao Wu immediately added, “I paid to rent a smart porter earlier.”
Oh, those “idiot ant” workers. They were incredibly expensive and hideous, just a few pitch-black ant robots that did not fit Qi Ming’s aesthetic at all. He usually would not spare them a glance. He had not expected this stingy guy to actually waste money on something like that.
Could he not have just waited for me to move it?
Glancing at Xiao Wu’s bedroom, Qi Ming hesitated for a moment before stepping inside. Gauging the weight of the box, he pulled off his cumbersome jacket with one hand, stuffed it into Xiao Wu’s arms, and revealed his bare torso.
“Move over, weakling.”
The person beside him shifted a small step away, holding the jacket in silence.
Bracing the bottom of the box with his palms, Qi Ming gave it a test lift to estimate the weight. It was heavy, but not unmovable. The trouble was that the box was massive and Xiao Wu’s bedroom was too small. With Qi Ming’s long limbs, there simply was not enough room to maneuver.
Releasing his grip, he wiped the sweat dripping from his forehead and turned his head, complaining impatiently, “Xiao Wu, what is wrong with you? Why the hell is the heater on in this weather?”
His wine-red hair, dampened by sweat, clung messily to his full forehead. Fine beads of perspiration were scattered irregularly, looking like sparkling diamond dust.
“I caught a cold yesterday, so I did not dare turn on the air conditioning today. I thought sweating it out would help. Brother Qi, if you are really hot, you can take a cold shower. My bathroom is right there.”
Controlling his facial expression, Xiao Wu concernedly handed over a few tissues without daring to touch Qi Ming’s skin. He had to endure for now.
Brushing his damp hair back, Qi Ming’s features grew sharper and more unapproachable as his impatience mounted. His narrow green eyes, misty from the heat, became an enchanting web. For a moment, Xiao Wu nearly lost control of his expression, almost revealing the hidden obsession he had harbored for so long.
He had to endure.
Walking into the bathroom, Qi Ming quickly stripped off his remaining clothes. Standing under the showerhead, he let the cold water slide over the bridge of his nose and jaw, rolling down the lines of his abdomen. The heat vanished instantly, and his mind cleared a bit.
He really did hate the heat. It made everything sticky and hard to think. Because of this, he failed to notice all of Xiao Wu’s odd behavior today.
Washing the foam from his hair, he closed his eyes and vaguely heard the sound of the door bumping. Propping his palm against the tiled wall, Qi Ming tilted his head.
Did that kid go out?
Just as he thought this, he suddenly felt a pair of scalding hands wrap around his waist. Intertwined with the chill of the water, the touch sent a shiver through him.
“Xiao Wu, what are you doing in here? Get out.”
Without turning around, he grabbed the person’s wrists, his fingertips digging in as a warning.
Enduring the pain that felt like his wrist might snap, Xiao Wu pushed further, leaning his front against the man’s back. His lips brushed haphazardly along the indentation of Qi Ming’s spine.
“Ugh, Brother Qi, I… I feel so bad.”
His voice was exceptionally hoarse, sounding as if it were laced with gritty sand.
“Where does it hurt? Wait, is your rut early?”
Frowning slightly, Qi Ming pried the clinging Xiao Wu off his back. He turned and pinned him against the bathroom wall, patting the boy’s flushed face and muttering strangely.
“Tsk, what kind of Alpha cries at the drop of a hat like you do?”
The youth’s tears mixed with the water from the shower, making them hard to distinguish. But Qi Ming knew he was crying. An Alpha in heat, even one without a strong aggressive streak, should not be this fragile.
He did not realize that at this moment, the cramped bathroom was filled with a heavy aroma of dark coffee, a faint burnt scent that wrapped tightly around him from head to toe. It was like a seamless spiderweb, airtight. This was Xiao Wu’s pheromone, saturated with intense possessiveness and the acrid smell of anxiety-induced irritability.
But Qi Ming could not smell it.
Lifting his cheek into the man’s forceful palm, Xiao Wu sobbed out.
“Brother Qi, hold me, okay?”
As his words hit the floor, the splashing water droplets amplified a deathly silence, broken only by the boy’s intermittent whimpering.
“Do you know what you are saying?”
Withdrawing his hand, Qi Ming did not look at him again. He turned and grabbed a white disposable towel from the cabinet, wrapping it around his lower body. His superior muscle lines were coated in a layer of water, standing out sharply under the white light like a finely carved jade statue. The scattered crimson marks on his skin did not ruin the beauty; instead, they added a touch of unparalleled debauchery and sexiness.
It caused the whites of Xiao Wu’s eyes to stain with a matching blood-red.
Stepping forward, he blocked Qi Ming’s attempt to push the door open, desperately baring his heart.
“I know, I know. I also know that every time I see the hickeys on you, I want to go crazy. Those arrogant bastards, aside from money and a decent face, they are not worthy of you at all.”
With Xiao Wu’s meager strength, he could not actually stop Qi Ming. But hearing those words, Qi Ming paused and turned to tease him playfully.
“Oh? But you do not even have money. Were you planning to rely on this face of yours?”
Pinching the youth’s handsome cheek, he looked him up and down with the critical gaze of someone appraising merchandise.
“In that case, I would rather just look in the mirror.”
“But I love you! For these ten-plus years, I have loved you every single moment! I am the only one who truly understands you.”
They only shallowly like your face and body. But I, I know everything about you.
You have a natural malice hidden in your bones. Your tenderness in bed is nothing but an illusion. Those people are just rushing to pay money to be your toys.
You have no heart.
And yet, I still love you.
Despite the sincere confession in his ear, Qi Ming’s expression did not ripple in the slightest. He seemed somewhat puzzled, leaning down to stare into the other’s reddened eyes.
“You say you understand me. Then, how could you not know? With me, you can only choose one: friend or lover.”
Those who wanted to sleep with Qi Ming could never be his friends, and those who were his friends could never crawl into his bed. Since Xiao Wu had been Qi Ming’s friend for so many years and had entered his world with that status, he should have understood that he had long ago forfeited that eligibility.
Emotions during a rut are like an uncontrolled beast in a cage. Xiao Wu heard himself scream.
“Then I do not want to be your friend anymore!”
No, what did he just say? How could he say that?
Sure enough, Qi Ming’s expression vanished. His pale red lips flattened into a straight line, and the water droplets from his hair slid over his prominent Adam’s apple like frozen crystals.
The storm was coming.
“Xiao Wu, I will give you one chance to say that again.”
Grabbing the youth’s equally wet black hair, he yanked his head up, squinting his eyes with a cold smile.
“If I am not satisfied with your answer, you can get lost.”
If he did not want to be a friend, then he could be a stranger. As for being a lover? Do not even think about it.
“I… I am sorry, Brother Qi. It is the rut. I am in so much pain, so I was not thinking.”
Clutching the arm that held his hair, Xiao Wu rubbed his cheek against it pleadingly. A tide of regret flooded his heart. He was terrified. Qi Ming was serious. He was truly prepared to cut ties instantly if another wrong word was said.
Even though they had known each other since they were seven, this friendship of over ten years was still something Qi Ming could discard effortlessly.
He really has no heart.
“Ah, I see. A rut. I get it; it is easy to act crazy then.”
Setting him back down, Qi Ming gently wiped a tear from the corner of Xiao Wu’s eye with his knuckle and patted his head.
“I will pretend I did not hear that. Now, get out.”
Fortunately, as a Beta, he would not be controlled by pheromones or turned into a fool.
Closing the bathroom door, Qi Ming exhaled. This was terrible. He actually thought a guy like him could have a friend. Turns out, it was just another person wanting to climb into his bed. Within seconds, Qi Ming’s expression returned to calm.
Actually, how could he not have known? All that talk about loving him was a joke. In Qi Ming’s eyes, if he did not have this face, who would love him? He was just an underclassman from a dilapidated planet.
By the time Qi Ming emerged from the bathroom, Xiao Wu had changed into clean clothes. That lone suit had been soaked during their scuffle.
“Brother Qi, I have booked another smart porter. I will have the gaming pod sent to your house in a bit.”
Handing Qi Ming a dry towel, Xiao Wu added with a smile, “Don’t worry, the address is completely confidential, and the information will be automatically destroyed afterward.”
Placing the towel over his head, Qi Ming did not refuse. Xiao Wu had messed up; spending this money was only right, especially since Qi Ming had been magnanimous enough to forgive his nonsense.
“Okay, I am off.”
Dressed in a set of new clothes he kept at Xiao Wu’s place, Qi Ming gave a wave and walked out.
Watching the tall silhouette of the red-haired man stretch out under the morning streetlights, Xiao Wu leaned against the doorframe and slowly slid down to the floor.
What had he done? What an idiot. Qi Ming had definitely made a note of this in his mental ledger; he would not truly forgive him.
But if he had not said it, Xiao Wu would have truly regretted it. At least now, he knew. He did not regret it.
Did he really not regret it?
