The Cold Side Character from a Male-Lead Novel is Pregnant - Chapter 7
The moment the door was pulled open, a flash of yellow tried to bolt outward.
Chen Kan, with quick reflexes, reached out to intercept. He initially thought he was catching Yan Yu by the waist, but looking down, he found himself holding a plain-looking, utterly embarrassed man in a delivery uniform.
Chen Kan’s first instinct was that Yan Yu, deeply immersed in the protagonist role of Wealth is Finally Free, had sought out the so-called “Destined Match” for a heart-to-heart at most, his taste was just a bit questionable. But immediately after, two or three more men with varying expressions of panic rushed out of the room, each using every ounce of strength to make an escape.
How could Chen Kan let them get away?
He stood formidably in the doorway, his long arms reaching out like a net to snag two more.
At that moment, the sound of footsteps echoed from behind. Chen Kan turned to see Huang Zhongren, the captain of the Vice Squad, leading his team toward the room. Only then did he realize what was happening. He knit his brows and looked at Yan Yu, who was standing by the door.
Yan Yu had already changed into a shirt. He stood with arms crossed, looking back at Chen Kan with a mix of indifference and scrutiny. The dim yellow light of the foyer outlined his lean silhouette. Beneath the fabric, his frame was faintly visible; his back was rod-straight, and his face remained void of emotion.
Yan Yu pointed toward the room next door, 826, and said to Huang Zhongren, “There are two more in there.”
Captain Huang immediately directed his men to secure the other room.
By the time the string of “johns” were lined up against the wall and ordered to squat with their hands behind their heads, the men Yan Yu had tricked into waiting by the door finally realized what had happened. They buried their heads low, explaining the situation to the vice captain in hushed, hurried tones.
Huang Zhongren listened for a moment before turning a wary eye toward Chen Kan. “And what are you doing here?”
Huang was junior in rank and hadn’t met Chen Kan personally. He had only interacted with Yan Yu’s subordinates once during a rape case to coordinate forensic evidence.
Yan Yu’s expression soured, looking as if he found Chen Kan’s presence deeply embarrassing. Nevertheless, he grabbed Chen Kan’s arm and pulled him back slightly, explaining to Huang Zhongren, “He’s just passing by. He’s not here for… that.”
Chen Kan stepped forward, intending to shake hands and introduce himself, but someone behind Huang Zhongren whispered, “Captain, that’s the Detachment Leader of Criminal Investigation, Chen Kan.”
“Oh! My mistake! Captain Chen! You’ve been a huge help!” Huang Zhongren hurried forward to shake hands. Chen Kan gave a cursory squeeze, glanced toward 826, and said, “Captain Huang, you should be thanking Director Yan.”
Huang Zhongren quickly turned to grasp Yan Yu’s hand instead. “Aya! Forensic Doctor Yan! Director Yan! Thank you so much! I was just worrying about hitting our performance targets this quarter. This is a huge win! Hehe, thanks to you. I didn’t realize Director Yan was not only a professional but also so public-spirited!”
Yan Yu, seeing the man wouldn’t let go of his hand and was continuing with the bureaucratic pleasantries, looked even more displeased. He pulled his hand back sharply and said seriously, “These men have different ages, identities, and backgrounds. They must have a group chat. The value of that ‘brothers’ group likely goes far beyond just these few individuals.”
“Right, right. I’ll organize the clues and start tracking them down through the network immediately. Once we bust the whole nest, I’ll treat you to dinner! No, I’ll treat you and Captain Chen together!”
Yan Yu gave Chen Kan a cold sidelong glance. “No need. If he’s there, I’m not. If I’m there, he’s not.”
“Huh?”
Captain Huang gave a dry laugh, his gaze darting between the two. Recalling the recent “rumors,” he suddenly understood!
“Oh, I get it, I get it. I didn’t see anything. I saw absolutely nothing. Ahem! Men, did we see Captain Chen at the couple’s hotel tonight?”
The Vice Squad shouted in unison, “No! We! Didn’t!”
“That’s right. Keep your mouths shut,” Captain Huang turned back and whispered an assurance to the pair. “We’re all adults here. It’s just a secret date at a hotel, nothing to be ashamed of.”
Chen Kan didn’t confirm or deny it, his gaze remaining fixed on Yan Yu. Yan Yu had weariness between his brows and seemed to only want to finish the statement and leave. Chen Kan spoke up to urge them along: “Captain Huang, let’s finish the statements first. We can talk about the rest later.”
“Right, right.”
On the way back to the station, Chen Kan and Yan Yu sat in separate vehicles. Chen Kan drove Yan Yu’s car while Yan Yu followed in the police cruiser. It was only then that Chen Kan could process everything from start to finish. He realized clearly that the current Yan Yu was indeed acting out of character.
This “Inner Demon” was powerful, and his understanding of Yan Yu… was actually not that deep.
An hour ago, following clues from the audiobook, Chen Kan had found the only couple’s hotel within ten kilometers that referred to room 228 as “828.” Along the way, he had imagined various scenarios: Yan Yu crying his eyes out like a novel protagonist while listening to the “action” next door, or Yan Yu treating the noise like white noise and falling asleep. He never imagined Yan Yu would hand a “grand gift” to the Vice Squad.
But how was Yan Yu’s body? How was his mood? Was he in pain?
Chen Kan felt a rare surge of anxiety, unsure how to ask if he needed comfort. At that moment, a message arrived from Yan Yu.
It was over a dozen photos of bank statements and several screenshots of communication logs. Yan Yu had circled the suspicious transactions and calls, notifying him with a clear undertone of rage:
[I have contacted the Effervescent Tablet.]
Chen Kan: ?
When Long Zhanye received a text from an unknown number, he thought it was some trick by a suitor trying to get his attention. There were many women who loved him, after all, but few could pique his desire for conquest.
However, when he received a WeChat friend request, he realized things were not quite right.
The request read: [Hello, I am Chen Kan’s legal partner.]
That single sentence stopped the “eagle-like man” in his tracks. Long Zhanye’s eyes blazed as he scoured the applicant’s profile!
Chen Kan…? You said you were going home to farm. When did you get a wife? And so quietly?
Long Zhanye hadn’t seen Chen Kan in ages. Ever since he lost to Chen Kan in the “Jianghua Trials” and the “Songshui Demon Slaying” matches, he had wanted a rematch. But Chen Kan never accepted, claiming such matches were merely displays of senseless violence. He said he wanted to do something meaningful, then withdrew from the cultivation world and never participated in another “Immortal Rank Test.”
When Long Zhanye asked what he was going to do if not cultivate, Chen Kan simply replied: I’ve earned enough money. I’m going home to farm.
He understood that as a top-tier cultivator, Chen Kan had indeed made a fortune, but going home to farm? Really?
As a gifted young cultivator who usually won everything, Long Zhanye rarely lost and even more rarely respected anyone. But Chen Kan was like an unscalable mountain on his path—younger, more talented, more handsome, wealthier, and even… well, superior in every competitive metric. It was as if Chen Kan existed solely to humble him. It was a true “Why was Zhou Yu born if Zhuge Liang exists?” situation.
So, Long Zhanye didn’t just practice his cultivation and maintain his good looks; he tried to steal Chen Kan’s demon-slaying missions and challenged him constantly. But after Chen Kan reached his financial goals, he gave up the high-bounty tasks and ignored the provocations.
Long Zhanye resorted to competing over women. Chen Kan was cold and had a bad temper; his luck with women was far inferior. Long Zhanye was on his third girlfriend while Chen Kan had never dated anyone. This gave Long Zhanye a small sense of balance.
And now he hears Chen Kan got married before him?!
Long Zhanye quickly accepted the request from “No Business, Retire.” He didn’t say hello immediately; instead, he clicked the profile to dig through the photos and moments.
The profile picture was a silly-looking Alaskan Malamute. The background was a snowy field with a string of paw prints. The moments were set to “Last 6 Months,” and there was absolutely nothing posted.
As boring and uninteresting as Chen Kan. And a woman who doesn’t post… like his first girlfriend, probably had a dull life and no charm.
Finding no useful info, Long Zhanye was wondering what Chen Kan’s wife wanted when “No Business, Retire” sent a message.
It was a photo: The three photos from his own moments of him and Chen Kan together. One where he was smiling brightly with his arm around a stone-faced Chen Kan. One where he leaned in to kiss Chen Kan’s cheek while being pushed away in disgust. And one where they stood stiffly, looking like a passport photo.
Long Zhanye remembered those were taken when Chen Kan announced his retirement.
No Business, Retire: [Is this you?] Long Aotian: [Yeah. Is your bro handsome?] Long Aotian: [What’s up? Something wrong?] No Business, Retire: [Where are you?] No Business, Retire: [I want to talk to you in person.]
Long Zhanye’s heart skipped. He didn’t expect her to be so direct. He looked at his own phone wallpaper—his girlfriend who hadn’t given him a kind word in two weeks and agreed immediately without even asking what they were talking about.
Long Aotian: [Sure. I’m in the capital. You coming to find me?] No Business, Retire: [No time.] No Business, Retire: [Come to K City yourself. I’m only free to see you tomorrow at 6:00 PM.]
Long Zhanye thought this person was quite arrogant. Why should he go to her? Then another message popped up:
No Business, Retire: [If the talk goes well, I will divorce Chen Kan.]
Long Zhanye: ? Long Aotian: [Deal. Doesn’t matter what we’re talking about. (Grinning face)] Long Aotian: [I’ll be there tomorrow. (Grinning face)] Long Aotian: [(Singing a little tune about an affair).jpg]
Ten minutes later.
Long Aotian: [By the way, I forgot to ask. What’s your name?] No Business, Retire: [Yan Yu.]
