I Belong to Her Now
After Assistant Xiang left with the meal, Mo Zhu pushed aside the headache-inducing documents. She sank into her chair, her crossed leg bobbing rhythmically in the air.
“Xiao Ta, what is she doing right now?”
After the female lead left, she first went to her university to handle the paperwork for her leave of absence. Then she went to her dorm to pack some things before returning home. She is currently packing her clothes, most likely to move into your residence.
Mo Zhu finally remembered the culprit behind her score deduction. “What do you think would happen if I told her not to move in right now?”
Host, Xiao Ta suggests you accept the move! In her eyes, if you have an agenda, she might moderately lower her guard once she sees what it is. Otherwise, she will only become more uneasy and vigilant toward you.
The unknown is the most unsettling thing of all.
“Well, look at you, finally saying something useful. Turns out you’re not just a silly system that knows how to scream,” Mo Zhu praised with a smile.
Mo Zhu’s question had been offhand. Thinking about it calmly afterward, that apartment wasn’t her permanent residence; she had only stayed there because it was close by when the driver dropped her off.
It was better for Ji Shubai to move in. Relationships only change in depth and distance when people actually interact.
And in this dynamic, she was the one who had to find every possible way to create those connections.
Once she clarified her plan, the frustration in Mo Zhu’s heart dissipated slightly. However, she still hadn’t figured out the perfect “entry point” for her relationship with Ji Shubai.
The phone on the desk suddenly lit up. She picked it up and saw a message from Xia Yitian a friend who had shared her “refined tastes” since childhood.
In the original plot, Xia Yitian was the only friend willing to help Mo Zhu after her downfall, though she was ultimately blocked by her family and couldn’t do much.
Xia Yitian’s message invited her to a small gathering tonight, mentioning that it would mostly be acquaintances from their circle.
Mo Zhu wasn’t particularly interested; her mind was currently occupied by a certain someone who didn’t even like her.
But Xiao Ta spoke up.
Congratulations, Host! You have triggered a plot mission. The female lead will attend this gathering. You must also go and, during the event, make everyone realize that your relationship with Ji Shubai is anything but ordinary!
Mo Zhu lowered her leg, the heel of her shoe hitting the floor with a sharp thud.
“I’ve noticed a pattern. You guys take every opportunity you get to drive me into a corner, don’t you?”
How could that be? Please trust us, Host! Our professional standards are impeccable; such a thing would never happen.
This gathering was recommended to the female lead by her professor. Her goal is to see if she can make any useful connections. However, her identity as the Cheng family’s illegitimate daughter will be exposed here. Your subsequent appearance and actions will make everyone realize Ji Shubai is closely involved with you, leading the crowd to look down on her and mock her even more.
Xiao Ta’s friendly reminder: You only need to complete your part of the plot.
Mo Zhu recalled what Xiao Ta had said earlier: anything outside the plot is a blank canvas. Suddenly, she seemed to understand something.
She toyed with her phone. “So what you’re saying is… the plot points triggered by me are unchangeable, but there’s room to maneuver in the events triggered by others?”
You could interpret it that way.
Her phone vibrated with another message. She glanced at it and found it was actually from Ji Shubai.
The message stated she had something to do tonight and would move in tomorrow instead.
Mo Zhu stared at the line of text for a while before replying with a simple “Okay.”
Ji Shubai sent nothing further.
She put down the phone, stood up, and went to the bedroom suite inside her office, where she kept a selection of seasonal casual wear.
This gathering wasn’t strictly formal, so there was no need to dress too elaborately.
However, mindful of her current streak of bad luck, she decided to pick an extra spare coat to keep in the car, just in case of an emergency.
By evening, it was unclear if her luck had simply run its course or if Ji Shubai’s dislike had lessened, but the drive over was surprisingly smooth.
She arrived at the venue quite early, but her appearance immediately drew numerous gazes.
Mo Zhu’s features were vibrant and beautiful, possessing a kind of glamorous intensity that felt almost aggressive. Even the most low-key, understated clothes seemed to take on a sharp, flamboyant edge when she wore them. It was impossible for her not to be the center of attention.
“Mo Zhu, over here!” Xia Yitian waved to her from a sofa.
Mo Zhu scanned the room and noticed that Ji Shubai hadn’t arrived yet. She walked over to Xia Yitian and sat down casually.
“Why didn’t you reply to my message? I thought you weren’t coming,” Xia Yitian complained, though her tone was playful.
“I got busy and forgot,” Mo Zhu said.
“Oh, my dear Lady Mo, you actually have days where you work seriously?” Xia Yitian clearly didn’t believe her. Then, remembering something, a pained expression crossed her face. “One of my family’s projects is currently in talks with your company. My sister has been forcing me to go to the office every day to participate. Can you do me a favor and let me in through the back door?”
“That project is under a subsidiary, not my department. Asking me won’t help,” Mo Zhu replied.
“Fine, fine.” Xia Yitian shook her head, wanting to drop the stressful topic. “By the way, who were you looking for just now? You were standing there searching for quite a while.”
Mo Zhu’s tone turned lazy. “A pretty girl, obviously.”
Xia Yitian was used to her frivolous remarks and assumed she was just scouting the room for someone attractive.
As the two chatted idly, Xia Yitian suddenly changed the subject.
“Hey, did you hear about what’s been happening with the Cheng family lately?”
“I’ve heard a few things. Why?” Mo Zhu asked, following the lead.
“The Cheng family is truly ruthless,” Xia Yitian said, shaking her head. “No wonder my sister always tells me to stay away from them. She says that entire family is rotten to the core. Looks like she was right.”
“I heard that the new Mrs. Cheng has an illegitimate daughter. She’s been hidden away for years, and even after the scandal broke, she tried to shield her. But rumors still leaked out. Apparently, she went to our high school, two years below us. Any idea who it might be?”
Mo Zhu took a sip of her drink. “I barely knew the people in my own year.”
Xia Yitian figured that made sense. “Well, you must remember that girl from back then. what was her name? Ji? I remember you two really didn’t get along.”
“That’s ancient history. Why bring it up?”
Xia Yitian gave a mysterious smile. “I heard she’s coming tonight. That’s why I asked if you were coming.”
“Is that so? What is she doing here?” Mo Zhu asked, though she sounded entirely uncurious.
“How should I know?” Xia Yitian shrugged. “But I remember her family background was pretty ordinary. What else would she be doing at a party like this? She’s probably here to suck up to someone.”
While they were talking, Mo Zhu’s gaze remained fixed on the entrance. The moment a familiar figure appeared, she sat up slightly straighter, her previous lethargy vanishing instantly.
Xia Yitian was busy talking to someone else and didn’t notice the change.
Mo Zhu watched as Ji Shubai walked in with a composed stride, showing no sign of intimidation.
It was as if this was how she was meant to be—confident and poised, as if she could handle anything the world threw at her with ease. She looked exactly like that “old friend.”
Having finished her side conversation, Xia Yitian finally spotted Ji Shubai. She nudged Mo Zhu with her elbow. “Isn’t that her? Ji something?”
A few others nearby who had gone to the same high school chimed in. “Yeah, that’s her.”
Yet, no one could recall her name.
One person spoke without thinking: “Speaking of which, didn’t President Mo and her serve as the President and Vice President of the Student Council together? People used to spread all sorts of scandalous rumors about you two back then.”
“Right, right! I remember hearing something like that too.”
Mo Zhu looked thoughtful. “Scandalous rumors?”
“How is that possible?” Xia Yitian instinctively defended her friend. “Where did such a baseless rumor come from?”
The person who spoke realized they might have crossed a line and awkwardly raised their glass to Mo Zhu. “Just nonsense, President Mo. Don’t mind me.”
Mo Zhu didn’t seem to care, allowing the person to breathe a sigh of relief.
The group moved on to other topics.
Host, the female lead is about to have her identity exposed! This is a perfect chance to gain points! Go help her, otherwise the upcoming plot will only get harder for you!
“Xiao Ta, I know exactly what to do.” There was an unsuppressable smile in Mo Zhu’s voice.
The excitement of finding a breakthrough made her heart race.
Before Xiao Ta could figure out what was happening, she heard Mo Zhu ask: “There’s no rule saying the plot points have to happen in a specific chronological order, right?”
There is no such rule, no.
“And there’s no rule saying I can’t rephrase things to complete the plot, right?”
Eh?
Mo Zhu stood up slowly. Xia Yitian looked up. “What is it? Where are you going?”
Her gaze was fixed forward. “I saw an acquaintance. I’m going to say hello.”
“Who? I’ll come with you.” Xia Yitian stood up as well; they knew mostly the same people here.
Mo Zhu didn’t answer. She simply walked forward, ignoring several people who tried to greet her along the way. She didn’t stop until she reached Ji Shubai’s side.
“Who are you saying hello to?” Xia Yitian had followed her all the way.
Mo Zhu tilted her glass slightly toward Ji Shubai. “I’m looking for her.”
Ji Shubai was startled to hear Mo Zhu’s voice. She instinctively tried to create some distance, but Mo Zhu took a step forward and grabbed her hand. “You—”
“Ah—” Mo Zhu acted as though she had suddenly remembered something. She gave the surrounding crowd a dazzling smile. “I think I forgot to tell you all. I belong to her now.”
Standing behind her, Xia Yitian was so shocked she reflexively jumped back three steps.
