The Cold CEO Chases His White Moonlight - Chapter 4
Ji Zhiwei didn’t hesitate for even a second.
The door opened, and the sound of rain outside invaded the room even more wildly.
She didn’t even need to look up just from the noise alone, she could tell how heavy the rain was.
“Wait.” Just as Ji Zhiwei was about to close the door, Gu Yunhui finally spoke.
The young girl looked up at her, her eyes devoid of emotion, not even a trace of resentment.
They were just clear and pure, fitting for her age.
“Do you have an umbrella?” Gu Yunhui didn’t dare meet those light-colored eyes.
She averted her gaze, trying to keep her tone casual.
“No.” If Gu Yunhui had any intention of making her stay, she should say no.
Ji Zhiwei gripped her bag, she hadn’t brought an umbrella today either.
“The rain’s too heavy. Don’t go back.”
Gu Yunhui stood up and walked toward the stairs. “Come in and lock the door.”
Ji Zhiwei couldn’t quite believe what she was hearing.
Was Gu Yunhui worried she’d catch a cold from the rain?
She hesitated for a second, and by then, Gu Yunhui had already turned and gone upstairs.
Was this a hint? Ji Zhiwei’s heart itched fiercely, as if someone had scratched it.
She locked the door and quickly followed Gu Yunhui.
At the door to the master bedroom, Gu Yunhui stopped abruptly. Ji Zhiwei, not paying attention, bumped into her back.
Gu Yunhui suddenly regretted letting her stay.
She should’ve just given this idiot an umbrella instead of keeping her here to be a nuisance.
“Why are you following me?” Gu Yunhui turned around and flicked Ji Zhiwei’s nose.
Ji Zhiwei covered her nose. “I thought Sister Yun wanted me to.”
“Just made me angry, and now you want to sleep with me? You’ve got quite the imagination.”
One flick wasn’t enough Gu Yunhui went for Ji Zhiwei’s forehead next.
Ji Zhiwei couldn’t cover everything, so she simply lowered her hands, docilely letting Gu Yunhui have her way with her face.
Gu Yunhui’s aim was off, two flicks were enough to make Ji Zhiwei’s eyes redden.
The girl sniffled and cautiously peeked up at Gu Yunhui from beneath her lashes.
A strand of blue hair fell forward, her cheeks flushed from being pinched, and her deep golden eyes rare and beautiful glistened with tears, pitiful and adorable.
She looked like a fragile porcelain doll.
Only then did Gu Yunhui stop.
Her brain was just as simple as a doll’s not very bright.
If it weren’t for the fact that this little thing was cute and could be marked by her, Gu Yunhui would’ve kicked her out long ago.
Gu Yunhui entered the bedroom, leaving the door open.
Ji Zhiwei stood at the doorway, hesitating for a moment before turning toward the guest room her own room.
“Tch. Get in here. Do I need to invite you?” Gu Yunhui was exasperated.
One moment she said she wanted to come, the next she was leaving.
Was this kid just shy and timid, or was she genuinely obedient or just plain stupid?
“Ah, I—I… sorry.” Ji Zhiwei, thoroughly embarrassed, hurried into the master bedroom.
She stuck close to Gu Yunhui, following step for step, nearly ready to change clothes and climb into bed.
Finally, Gu Yunhui couldn’t take it anymore and held her in place. “Tend to your injuries first.”
Even when angry, Gu Yunhui had held back, most of the marks were just red and swollen, with only a few bleeding, but they still looked unpleasant.
Ji Zhiwei blinked.
“Well? Do I have to do this for you too?” Despite her tone of disdain, Gu Yunhui still went to fetch the first-aid kit for her.
Sitting on the chair waiting for Gu Yunhui, Ji Zhiwei felt a little happy.
Did Gu Yunhui still have feelings for her after all?
Even if she was harsh when Ji Zhiwei made mistakes, wasn’t that just part of the fun?
Moreover, they had their rules, and she was indeed the one at fault first.
Thinking this, as Gu Yunhui returned, Ji Zhiwei gave her a radiant smile.
For the first time, Gu Yunhui couldn’t understand the little one she had raised.
Had she done something particularly good? Why was this person so happy? Smiling like that, her face practically blooming.
“After raising you for over three years, you’ve only gotten sillier,” Gu Yunhui remarked mercilessly, only for Ji Zhiwei’s smile to grow even brighter.
Ji Zhiwei’s smile was too pure, and being professionally trained, her expressions were more striking than an average person’s, incredibly infectious.
Gu Yunhui couldn’t help but curve her lips slightly in response, then quickly caught herself and schooled her expression. “What are you smiling about?”
“Yun-jie!” Seeing Gu Yunhui’s mood improve, Ji Zhiwei no longer held back as much, her voice soft and sweet. “Thank you.”
Gu Yunhui paused what she was doing.
What kind of person could make even a simple “thank you” sound like an invitation?
Gu Yunhui pushed Ji Zhiwei down, unsure whether the problem lay with her or this silly girl.
Unlike the roughness from before, this time Gu Yunhui’s movements were noticeably gentler, further cementing Ji Zhiwei’s thoughts.
Perhaps Gu Yunhui was constrained by their agreement and the gap in their status, unable to set aside her pride.
If she could be braver, find the right moment to express herself, could they take things further?
This wasn’t the first time. Ji Zhiwei remembered another occasion.
That time at the hotel in Lincheng, after a business dinner, Gu Yunhui had drunk a bit too much, lost control, and ended up hurting Ji Zhiwei.
Back then, too, once sober, Gu Yunhui had scolded Ji Zhiwei for being clumsy, unable to even dress a wound properly, yet her hands had been gentle, as if afraid of grazing the injury.
Still, Ji Zhiwei didn’t dare recklessly reach for Gu Yunhui’s waist.
“Hold this.” Amidst the busyness, Gu Yunhui shoved the gauze she’d just fetched into Ji Zhiwei’s hands, afraid the girl might lose herself in the moment and try to embrace her again.
Ji Zhiwei felt cared for and cooperated even more eagerly.
In the villa’s first-aid kit lay a boat-shaped suction nozzle, placed there who knows when.
Probably forgotten after one of their previous playtimes.
Before Ji Zhiwei could recall further, Gu Yunhui pressed the button and leaned in.
After the revelry, cradled in Gu Yunhui’s arms, Ji Zhiwei drifted off to sleep, content.
Tonight’s dreams were sweet.
The next morning, Ji Zhiwei woke up late again.
Gu Yunhui had already rushed off to work, the other side of the bed long devoid of warmth.
Ji Zhiwei wasn’t upset. Gu Yunhui had mentioned she’d been busy lately.
It was just a shame she couldn’t make her breakfast.
Ji Zhiwei checked her class schedule, all her lectures were in the afternoon. With no hurry to return, she headed to the kitchen.
She hadn’t yet perfected the dishes she wanted to make for Gu Yunhui.
The fridge was full of nearly expired ingredients, and her lunches and dinners lately had mostly consisted of the same few fixed dishes.
Luckily, Gu Yunhui rarely checked the fridge.
Otherwise, being caught practicing her cooking would’ve been a tad embarrassing.
Back at school in the afternoon, Fang Xianqing was studying in the dorm while their other roommate was out.
Seeing Ji Zhiwei return at this hour, Fang Xianqing’s expression turned somewhat complicated.
Both being acting majors, she kept her emotions well-hidden.
“Family matters again?” Fang Xianqing greeted Ji Zhiwei with a composed expression.
“Yeah.” Ji Zhiwei didn’t elaborate.
They had been roommates for nearly four years now, so theoretically, they could be considered friends.
Ji Zhiwei treated them well enough bringing them milk tea, helping with packages just like any good roommate would.
But Fang Xianqing always felt that the concept of “friendship” didn’t seem to hold much weight in Ji Zhiwei’s heart.
“Your family is from the capital?” For instance, right now.
Fang Xianqing tried to strike up a conversation, but within two sentences, Ji Zhiwei could shut it down completely.
Still, Fang Xianqing understood. It was just that sometimes she wanted to get closer, only to be blocked by an invisible wall.
“Sort of,” Ji Zhiwei replied without lying.
The Ji family was indeed a prominent household in the capital. But that was all in the past it had nothing to do with who she was now.
“Xiao Cheng isn’t here?” Today, Ji Zhiwei was in a slightly better mood and asked an extra question.
“No, she’s busy with her department.”
Ji Zhiwei didn’t say anything more.
Gu Yunhui had promised her an audition opportunity for Ye Pingsheng’s new drama, rather than directly handing her a role.
For a caged bird like Ji Zhiwei, this counted as respect.
Roles obtained through a patron always felt undeserved.
But if it was just a chance, the stakes weren’t as high.
It probably wouldn’t trouble Gu Yunhui too much either.
The script had been sent to her phone today. She needed to prepare well otherwise, it would be Gu Yunhui’s face she’d be embarrassing.
Ji Zhiwei pulled up the director’s previous works and began studying them intently.
“Zhiwei, researching Director Ye’s dramas?” Later in the evening, Cheng Lanxin returned.
She carried three cups of milk tea and plopped one onto Ji Zhiwei’s desk with a thud.
Ji Zhiwei took off her headphones. “Thanks.”
“No problem. Did you know her new drama is starting auditions?” Cheng Lanxin sat beside Ji Zhiwei, eager to share some gossip.
“I know, the news is everywhere. What about it?”
“Let me tell you both a little secret.” Cheng Lanxin looked excited and even waved Fang Xianqing over.
“That award-winning actress Lu is auditioning for the female lead!”
“Wow.” The two roommates played along, exaggerating their reactions.
“Alright, alright, that’s not really a secret, anyone with eyes can see how close they are. Ahem. What I really wanted to say is that I also got an audition slot. Just for a maid, though, one with a bit more screen time.” Cheng Lanxin finally got to the point.
Ji Zhiwei froze for a moment. Did that mean she might run into her roommate at the audition?
Whatever. As long as no one found out about her relationship with Gu Yunhui, it didn’t matter.
After listening, Ji Zhiwei offered a quick congratulations before zoning out, not anticipating any other complications.
Over the next few weeks, Ji Zhiwei spent her time preparing for the audition, handling school anniversary events, and cooking for Gu Yunhui.
Life was dull and monotonous, with the only thing worth looking forward to being Gu Yunhui’s messages.
A week before the school anniversary, Gu Yunhui finally sent a text.
[Come to the villa tonight. Don’t forget to bring the things.]
The same familiar words, not a single character changed. Ji Zhiwei hid in the bathroom, steadying her breathing.
She didn’t hesitate for long, afraid that if she thought too much, she wouldn’t dare to ask.
[Okay, Sister Yun. Can you come a little earlier this time? I’d like to have dinner with you.]
Ji Zhiwei replied instantly Gu Yunhui should still be online.
The wait for a response was agonizing.
She nearly dug her nails into her palms before her phone finally buzzed.
[Sure. Let’s say 5:30.]
Ji Zhiwei exhaled in relief.
After class, she grabbed her things and left without looking back.
Her heart raced the entire way.
Kung Pao chicken, lotus root cakes, boiled beef.
These three dishes were ones Ji Zhiwei had observed Gu Yunhui particularly enjoying during their previous meals together.
Over the past month, Ji Zhiwei had made them repeatedly, eating them again and again until she was nearly sick of them.
All of it was just for this one day.
Following the time Gu Yunhui had specified, Ji Zhiwei prepared the meal.
Today, she was in her best form, the flavors she achieved were almost identical to those from the high-end restaurant they had visited before.
After arranging the plates, Ji Zhiwei sat at the dining table, staring at the dishes she had long grown tired of, yet feeling an unexpected flicker of anticipation.
Fifteen minutes later, the agreed-upon time arrived but Gu Yunhui did not.
Half an hour passed, and still, no one came to the door.
Outside, it was eerily quiet not even a single fallen leaf stirred.
An hour later, Ji Zhiwei finally heard movement beyond the door.
