The CEO Omega I Picked Up Has Run Away - Chapter 11
Chapter 11
Regret?
Li Mengwan didn’t think she would regret it. However, someone else was convinced she would namely, Ji Xiaoru, who had suddenly shown up at their doorstep.
Ji Xiaoru pulled Li Mengwan aside. “Sister, are you really going to marry Ji Shu? Do you know what kind of person she is?”
“At three years old, she stole vegetables from villagers. At ten, she was drinking, gambling, and fighting. At fifteen, she was caught peeping at girls bathing. At eighteen, she signed up for the Special Population Fertility Subsidy…”
“If you’re in trouble, tell me. I work at the Special Population Management Center in town. You are a precious Omega; we won’t leave you stranded. I can help you contact your family. There is truly no need for you to choose someone like her.”
Ji Xiaoru had only pulled Li Mengwan a few meters away. No matter how low she kept her voice, Ji Shu heard every word.
However, Ji Shu couldn’t argue. These were all things the original host had actually done. She even held a faint hope that Li Mengwan would be persuaded to leave. Then, Ji Shu wouldn’t have to follow the male lead’s original script, and her legs and eyes might actually be safe.
But Li Mengwan’s response shattered that hope instantly. “My family is gone. I like Sister Ji Shu very much. I like her regardless of what she’s like. Thank you for your concern.”
As she spoke, she looked at Ji Shu with a blush. “Sister, I’m right, aren’t I? You’ll be very good to me, won’t you?”
Ji Shu’s eyelid twitched. “I suppose so. Maybe… I’m not that terrible.”
Ji Xiaoru scoffed. “Not that terrible? This is the person who was hounding me just a while ago, demanding the state ‘assign’ me to her! Sister, listen to me, Alphas like her can’t move their legs once they see an Omega. Don’t be fooled by her sweet talk.”
Ji Shu was undeniably the worst Alpha the Management Center had ever dealt with—not because of her looks, but because of her low moral character. In Ji Xiaoru’s eyes, Li Mengwan was just an outsider being blinded by a pretty face.
Li Mengwan’s smile slowly faded, her eyes turning red. “Sister… is that true?” Her long lashes fluttered, tears threatening to fall.
Ji Shu felt a sharp, uncomfortable prick in her heart. “No.”
Li Mengwan brightened immediately. Ji Shu realized she had to stop Ji Xiaoru before Li Mengwan actually started crying she had no idea how to comfort people. “Is that all you came to say? You can go now. We have work in the fields.”
Ji Xiaoru gave Li Mengwan a look of profound disappointment, sighing as if watching a prize cabbage being eaten by a pig. “Of course not. Ji Hen found me last night and said your house was maliciously burned down. He wanted to apply for more aid.”
She shot a dirty look at Ji Shu. “I came to see if it was true.”
Ji Shu glanced at Ji Hen. He was busy looking pained by Li Mengwan’s expression and snapped, “What are you looking at me for? I didn’t do it to help you.” He just wanted Little Wan to have a better life, so he had reported the fire in hopes of getting a higher subsidy this month.
“Ji Shu, go to the Center on Monday to collect the subsidy yourself,” Ji Xiaoru said, wanting to leave as quickly as possible. “Before that, fill out the form in the second-floor office. We can only give you 3,000 yuan in compensation for the house.”
3,000 yuan? To the current Ji Shu, that was life-saving money. She watched Ji Xiaoru leave, impressed by the “Newbie Gift.”
Suddenly, a wave of resentment-filled cold air hit her. Ji Hen looked furious, and Li Mengwan’s eyes were red again.
“You’re still hung up on her, aren’t you?” Ji Hen barked.
Li Mengwan didn’t speak, but her expression said the same.
“I have nothing to do with her. Truly,” Ji Shu said. She wasn’t carrying the original host’s baggage.
“Then why were you staring at her back?” Ji Hen fumed. “If you still want someone else, don’t hurt Little Wan. I might as well—” He stopped himself before revealing his true feelings.
Li Mengwan interrupted softly, “It doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter what’s in Sister’s heart.” But her voice sounded like she was about to sob. It made anyone nearby feel like a monster for “bullying” her.
Ji Shu felt her chest tighten and stammered, “Actually… I was just thinking about what engagement gifts to buy with that 3,000 yuan.”
Ji Hen was silenced. Li Mengwan’s eyes lit up. “Then… Sister, can I have a bouquet of roses?”
Her emotions were shifting like the tides. Ji Shu nodded. “Of course.”
“Then I’ll go to town with Sister on Monday,” Li Mengwan added.
In the system’s voice: “Host, is it possible she’s faking it? To seduce you and gain your sympathy? Don’t forget, before her amnesia, she was a cold-blooded CEO who used any means to reach her goals.”
“Impossible,” Ji Shu countered. “She has amnesia. Where would she get such schemes? Don’t judge a lady’s heart with your petty system logic. Didn’t you see she was almost crying?”
The system went quiet. Fine, if you get hurt later, just don’t forget the farming tasks.
By 3:00 PM, the sun hid behind the clouds, and the temperature dropped perfect for tilling. Within four hours, they finished the last of the field.
“Looks like rain. Sis, let’s go,” Ji Hen said.
A drop of water hit Ji Shu’s face, followed by a downpour. Ji Hen panicked. “I have a big mouth! Let’s go! Little Wan’s body just recovered; she can’t get soaked.”
Ji Shu didn’t say a word. She tossed her hoe to Ji Hen, ran to Li Mengwan, took off her jacket to shield her head, and crouched down. “Get on.”
Ji Hen was right—Omegas were fragile. If Li Mengwan caught a fever, it would be a major headache for Ji Shu. She’d rather get soaked herself.
Li Mengwan smiled and climbed onto Ji Shu’s back. The jacket over her head smelled of sweat, but it was quickly overwhelmed by the Alpha’s intense rose fragrance. It was strangely comforting.
In a flash of playfulness—or perhaps instinct—Li Mengwan leaned her nose close to the Alpha’s scent gland on the back of her neck.
The warm breath hit the sensitive area, causing Ji Shu’s foot to slip. She nearly tumbled off the narrow field ridge. Her martial arts reflexes kicked in just in time to stabilize them.
Ji Hen, running behind, yelped. “Sis! Careful! Don’t drop Little Wan!”
Ji Shu had a bitterness she couldn’t voice. She couldn’t exactly say that Li Mengwan was touching her sensitive spot. And with every jog, she was feeling… things she shouldn’t be feeling.
“What’s wrong, Sister? Did something happen?” Li Mengwan asked innocently.
“Nothing. The path is just slippery,” Ji Shu lied, her face burning.
“Oh,” Li Mengwan said, glancing at the Alpha’s bright red ears. “Be careful then. If I’m too heavy, I can walk.”
“We’re almost there.” Just please, stop moving, Ji Shu prayed.
They reached the wooden hut just as the sky truly opened up. Ji Hen arrived a second later, drenched to the bone. He dropped the hoes and headed for the stove. “I’m boiling water for a bath. Do you guys want to wash?”
Ji Shu was tempted. She felt itchy and damp. Before she could answer, Li Mengwan’s soft voice chimed in: “Thank you, Brother Ji. Sister and I would both like to wash.”
Ever since she’d been rescued, she hadn’t had a proper bath. Before, she felt unsafe. Now? She had someone to protect her.
Li Mengwan handed the dirty jacket back to Ji Shu and smiled. A sudden chill ran down Ji Shu’s spine for no reason. She took the jacket and hurried toward the kitchen. “I’ll go help him.”
It must be the weather, she thought. It’s getting cold.
