- Chapter 9 - Cannon Fodder Ex-Boyfriend (9), You Have the Scent of Another Alpha on You
Gu Shiyu’s head snapped to the side. His meticulously styled black hair fell in disarray over his eyes, concealing much of his expression and lending him an aura of gloom and danger. However, the half of his face exposed to the air told a different story; a red handprint gradually bloomed against his pale skin, adding a touch of wretchedness and absurdity to his composed image.
“…”
Is this right?
Li Qingran felt that things had developed into a truly bizarre territory.
Leaning against the wine cabinet, the Alpha’s Adam’s apple bobbed. His lips parted slightly as he tried to formulate a way to salvage this once-again jeopardized chance to clock out. But before he could organize his thoughts, Su Jingyi had already bypassed Gu Shiyu and strode toward him.
The Omega wore that familiar, sweet smile, the one that suggested absolutely nothing was wrong.
“Oh, Gege, are you alright? Look at how dirty you are. Let me take you to get cleaned up, okay?”
Su Jingyi spoke softly, his tone tender, his eyes overflowing with concern for Li Qingran’s weakened state. Yet, his fingers dug deep into the soft flesh of Li Qingran’s shoulder like the talons of a predator that, once touching its prey, would never let go.
Li Qingran felt as if his bones were about to be crushed.
His shoulder throbbed, but the muscle tremors from the pheromone imbalance and the vertigo, feeling as if he had ridden a roller coaster a hundred times, left him without the strength to break free. Besides, breaking free would be useless.
Looking at the Su Jingyi who smiled so gently yet clearly had no intention of letting things go, Li Qingran’s eyelashes fluttered. He ultimately allowed the Omega to help him up. Su Jingyi wrapped an arm around his waist with possessive tightness and led him slowly out of the booth.
They passed Gu Shiyu, who stood with his head down, lost in thought.
The Alpha did not look up or attempt to stop them. Su Jingyi acted as if Gu Shiyu were invisible, his entire world centered on Li Qingran. He did not spare even a glance for the man he had just slapped. To each other, they were like parallel winds blowing in different directions, never to intersect, never to entangle.
Just as the original world line dictated.
Except, that quiet wind happened to catch a trace of a cooling woody scent, sensing the honey-sweet aroma clinging stubbornly to the smell of ice and snow, and the scent of gunpowder smoke tangled right along with it.
Gunpowder smoke?!
Gu Shiyu looked up sharply.
In his line of sight, that slightly thin back looked incredibly strained. Despite the man’s best efforts to endure, his left hand, hanging at his side and trembling uncontrollably, betrayed the fact that he had reached his physical limit.
This was normal. Any Alpha resisting the primal instinct to mark an Omega in Heat, while being bombarded by signals, would suffer immense mental and physical torture.
So, even though Li Qingran was covered in Qi Ziyan’s honeyed scent, Gu Shiyu was certain he had not marked him. He had not even gone near the Omega’s gland.
So, where did the gunpowder smoke come from?
In a room with only one Alpha and one Omega, why was there the scent of a second Alpha?
Gu Shiyu watched the tall figure disappear through the doorway, then looked back at the empty booth. He noted the pristine, unused ashtray on the coffee table, and his Adam’s apple tightened.
On the other side, Li Qingran, who had been easily pushed into a bathtub by Su Jingyi, fully realized just how weak he had become.
The handsome Alpha was like a soiled doll. The moment he was pushed into the tub, he instinctively tried to sit up, only to be pressed back down by a cleaner with a severe obsession with hygiene.
“It is okay, Gege. I am just helping you wash.”
Su Jingyi leaned down and kissed the corner of Li Qingran’s mouth. The movement was gentle, yet it made Li Qingran’s body tense involuntarily.
He looked up at the Omega, who was busy adjusting the temperature controls. Su Jingyi’s expression was perfectly normal; he even gave Li Qingran a playful wink, just like they did on their dates.
But Li Qingran still felt something was off. Su Jingyi’s eyes were too calm. Even when smiling, there was no warmth in them; they were like a frozen sea, appearing tranquil on the surface while a storm brewed beneath.
Li Qingran watched the Omega rise. The silver-white shower hose looked like a chain as it coiled around Su Jingyi’s palm. Then, with a beep:
Splash!
Li Qingran was chilled from head to toe.
Su Jingyi had turned on the cold water.
The icy stream started from the Alpha’s head, sliding down his pale cheeks, past his trembling Adam’s apple, and down into the collar another Omega had torn open. It soaked his white shirt and drenched his black trousers.
Throughout the process, there was no steam in the bathroom, no misty fog. They could see each other with terrifying clarity.
In the Omega’s amber eyes, Li Qingran could see his own reflection: his shirt becoming transparent against his skin, revealing the firm physique beneath, and the bite mark that no amount of water could wash away.
Why?
Why was his beloved Gege always discovered, found, and even marked by others, no matter how hard he tried to hide him?
Only he was allowed to leave a mark.
The stream of water became unstable. Li Qingran looked up, but before he could see clearly, there was a loud clang. The shower head slithered onto the white tiles like a water snake. As droplets splattered like rain, the doll who had been so quiet suddenly found his lap occupied by a cleaner who had intentionally soaked himself as well.
“Why?”
Su Jingyi sat astride Li Qingran’s legs, pressing a fingertip gently against that glaring bite mark, tracing its shape inch by inch.
“Did we not agree you were not working today? Why did you come back, Gege? Did the manager force you? Or did someone threaten you? Tell me, okay? I will handle them for you.”
He seemed to be soothing Li Qingran, his voice soft and airy.
“Trust me, Gege. I can solve every difficulty for you. I can give you everything you want. So,”
The Omega’s voice trembled. His rounded fingertip dug deeper into the swollen flesh. The fragile skin began to congest and thin, until the fingertip sank further, exposing raw tissue mixed with water droplets.
“Can I, Gege?”
The Omega leaned into Li Qingran’s shoulder and extended his tongue, swirling the beads of blood into his mouth. When he looked up again, a pink droplet hung from his chin, and his lips were a vivid crimson. He smiled at Li Qingran with cautious hope, while his hands wrapped around him like iron chains.
The lemon pheromones grew suffocatingly dense, enticing and inducing.
“Hide away. I will hide you even deeper,”
Su Jingyi’s voice cut off abruptly.
A pale finger was pressed against his red lips. The Alpha, who had been in a subordinate position, suddenly sat bolt upright. A shadow fell across the corner of his eye, looking like a dark snake unwilling to be bound.
“You said you could give me everything I want.”
Su Jingyi heard Li Qingran say: “Then do you know what I want most right now?”
“Mmph,”
Su Jingyi tried to speak, but the finger pressed against his lips gave him no chance. Under the orange light, shadows shifted. In his blurred vision, he saw the Alpha’s mouth move.
“To clock out.”
What?
What did he say?
Su Jingyi did not hear clearly and instinctively wanted Li Qingran to repeat it. But before he could open his mouth, a blizzard descended upon the small bathroom. The frigid, woody scent of ice and snow finally exploded from the Alpha’s gland. The entire room was instantly packed with Li Qingran’s pheromones, and Su Jingyi was completely enveloped in an eye-blink.
He did not even have time to react before his nasal passages were filled with the dominant scent. The overbearing aroma entered his body through every pore, occupying his flesh and flowing through every vein.
No mark, no penetration; simply through the invasion of pheromones, Su Jingyi’s brain did not even have time to register the sensation before his body hit its peak.
The extreme pleasure came so suddenly and violently that the Omega, who had never experienced such a thing, lost consciousness immediately.
The sound of running water returned to the bathroom after a brief silence. Steam blurred the frosted glass of the door. Then, before the droplets could fall, the door finally pushed open from the inside.
Li Qingran carried the limp Su Jingyi to the bed, tucked him in, and walked toward the balcony.
The sky outside was pitch black. The damp air carried the fresh scent of earth, saving his nose from the onslaught of various pheromones.
Three minutes left.
Li Qingran opened the clock app on his phone, watching the second hand tick around. In three minutes, the system would emerge from the dark room, and together they would face another failed attempt to clock out.
Where exactly did the mistake happen?
Li Qingran lit a cigarette. He did not smoke it, just watched the glowing cherry pulse and fade. He studied the wisps of grey smoke rising freely into the air, waiting for the three minutes to end.
By his hand, the second hand circled the clock; the cigarette shortened inch by inch.
Then, one second before the countdown hit zero, a notification popped up on his screen. It was succinct and to the point:
“I can help you leave Su Jingyi.”
