- Chapter 6 - Cannon Fodder Ex-Boyfriend (6), I am Su Jingyi
Bean-sized raindrops clattered against the broken umbrella ribs. Before 888 could even let out a single scream, it was tossed into the “dark room.”
Rumble! Rumble!
Thunder rolled continuously overhead.
Yet Li Qingran felt as though that ceaseless booming was echoing from within his own chest. Otherwise, why would it be so loud? It made his head throb in waves of confusion, leaving him unable to complete even a simple thought.
Help?
Who is helping? Helping whom? How to help?
Countless question marks swirled in Li Qingran’s mind, making him dizzy. He smelled the increasingly dense pheromones in the air, clearly belonging to an Alpha. While feeling the sheer absurdity of the situation, his instinct was to tear the man off of him.
But the man was like someone who had struggled in a swamp for too long and had finally caught a piece of driftwood; he was absolutely unwilling to let go.
He even looked like he wanted to take a bite.
The man’s hands were tightly wound around Li Qingran’s waist. His semi-long black hair, soaked by the rain, slithered across Li Qingran’s grey-white jacket like water snakes. It was hard to tell if the flush on his pale skin was from the friction of the fabric or a biological reaction, but a vivid red line stretched from his sockets to the corners of his eyes. While water shimmered in his pupils, the damp crimson at the edges of his eyes deepened.
The rain intensified, but within this desolate alleyway that few people ever trod, the temperature rose instead of falling.
The choking scent of gunpowder smoke spread wantonly through the damp space, like a raging fire. Even though the flames had been doused by the rain, the ashes remained. As the wind blew, they permeated every inch of the surrounding air.
With every breath, Li Qingran was filled with this bitter and unmistakable scent of gunpowder, making it difficult for him to breathe. Simultaneously, his body’s sense of rejection became increasingly pronounced.
While an Alpha’s pheromones might be the world’s strongest sedative for an Omega, for another Alpha, they served only as a clear signal for war.
No Alpha would ever like the pheromones of the same sex.
It was an instinctive loathing and repulsion.
If he could, Li Qingran would have loved to succumb to the violent and cruel impulses of his Alpha nature, slamming the Alpha—who kept provocatively releasing pheromones—into the ground, over and over, until not a trace of gunpowder smoke remained in the air.
But he couldn’t.
Li Qingran looked at that face, which was identical to the portrait in the bottom-right corner of the detection device. The words he had heard on the bus echoed in his mind:
“Maybe a young master from some wealthy family ran away…”
Then, amidst the echoes, the words “young master” automatically transformed into a single word: “Protagonist.”
A wealthy young master… an important character in the plot…
Li Qingran lowered his gaze halfway and suddenly reached out to pinch the man’s chin. Forced to lift his head, the silver zipper of his lips slid open. Li Qingran watched as he stuck out a crimson tongue, licking his lips in dissatisfaction.
“Give… give it to me!”
“…”
This overbearing manner—acting as if he were the victim despite his own excessive behavior, only getting angry when the other didn’t cooperate—certainly had the flair of a protagonist.
So…
“Are you the protagonist?” Li Qingran murmured.
However, of the only two beings who could answer that question, one was currently so muddled by drugs that he couldn’t hear what was being said. The other was face-down in the “dark room,” unable to reach heaven or earth, let alone answer Li Qingran’s question.
The skin beneath his fingertips seemed to grow hotter. The cold rain falling on the face Li Qingran had tilted up didn’t sober the man at all; instead, it made those shimmering eyes even more hazy.
The man shook his head, trying to break free from Li Qingran’s grip. Yet, whether it was because his strength was too low or Li Qingran’s was too great, his long struggle yielded nothing but a red mark on his chin.
His canines were becoming itchier. He even wanted to bite down on the finger Li Qingran held against his lower lip, piercing the sharp teeth deep into the soft flesh to alleviate the boiling desire within his body.
“It hurts… so hot…” the man muzzled out a few words incoherently.
Li Qingran looked down at him, watching the expensive suit become stained with mud and the cold, stern face get slowly swallowed by lust. The dark eyes that should have stood on high looking down at others could now only struggle to look up at the person before him, begging for a trace of pheromones that could soothe him.
Although the man’s pheromones only made him feel nauseated, Li Qingran had to admit that this image of a superior being falling from grace was quite effective at stirring up a desire for violence and conquest.
Is this what the person who drugged him wanted to see?
Who was the person originally meant to appear in the plot and witness this?
Li Qingran didn’t know. He only knew one thing: he definitely couldn’t help the Alpha in the way the person in the original plot would have.
So, how does an Alpha help another Alpha who has been drugged?
The choking smoke drifted through the alley like a thin veil or a hazy mist, enveloping the two of them. The man pressed his burning cheek against Li Qingran’s jacket, his face full of dazed confusion, seemingly wondering why the Omega before him wouldn’t give him the pheromones he wanted.
But he got his answer in the next second.
Without warning, a powerful wave of cold air descended upon him, covering everything. At this moment, though it was raining in the sky, the man felt as if snow were falling on his face.
The surrounding temperature seemed to drop significantly. This frigid chill, as if completely covered by ice and snow, cooled the fiery effects of the drug in the man’s body. However, the pheromones belonging to another Alpha simultaneously triggered his body’s combat instincts, making his blood run even hotter.
The intersection of ice and fire, the pull between battle genes and heat, turned the man’s brain into a chaotic mush, and his vision grew increasingly blurred. He didn’t know what he was supposed to be doing, and he forgot what he had been craving in the first place.
The surrounding air grew thinner and thinner. In the end, it seemed that every small pore and every crevice of the man’s body was completely occupied and filled by this icy snow aura with its faint woody fragrance.
He should have continued to release his own pheromones to fight to the end to see who was stronger. However, under the influence of the drug, the man couldn’t muster even a shred of strength.
Furthermore, under the tug of these two polar opposite sensations, he developed a very strange feeling toward Li Qingran’s pheromones.
He clearly repelled this scent and was pained by its suppression. But amidst the discomfort, a bizarre pleasure—one he had absolutely never experienced before—slowly rose within his body.
The storm of pheromones made of ice and snow surged toward the man wave after wave, making it nearly impossible for him to keep gripping Li Qingran’s hem. He gasped for air, tilting his head back desperately, seemingly trying to find a sliver of oxygen from this dense blizzard that could rescue him.
However, he couldn’t find it. His body, even his soul, had been stained by this cold woody scent at this moment. He couldn’t shake it off, couldn’t hide from it.
“Sorry, I can only help you this way.”
In his daze, the man heard these words. The voice was cold, yet the tone was gentle.
His vision, which had been hazy, finally cleared for an instant, but the dim surroundings only allowed him to catch a silhouette half-kneeling before him. Lean, blurry, like a wet mosaic—it should not have been discovered, yet under the storm of pheromones, it was forced to tear away the grey-white spots used for disguise.
This was an Alpha.
“There is no such thing as attraction between Alphas. Naturally bellicose Alphas have a strong sense of territory, which makes them unable to tolerate another Alpha in their domain during special periods, such as their rut or when bonding with a lover.
As everyone knows from the old cultural saying, ‘Two tigers cannot share one mountain.’ Alphas only produce thoughts of aggression and suppression toward the pheromones of the same sex, unless…”
Unless what?
His chaotic brain prevented the man from recalling that biology lesson from middle school, where the teacher spent an entire period explaining the relationship between Alpha and Alpha.
He only knew his body was enduring wave after wave of strange tides. This intense stimulation forced him to clench the damp fabric in his hand, as if only by doing so could he keep from being completely swallowed and drowned by the waves.
The faint woody scent lingered around him. The warning red lights in his brain flashed, roaring at him to resist. But his body honestly opened itself up. His skin, blood, and even every cell in his body were filled with the taste of ice and snow, and he was even unsatisfied, wanting more.
He seemed to be… broken.
His body trembled uncontrollably. As large patches of white light flashed before his eyes, these five short words surfaced in the man’s mind. It seemed to be his true feeling about this absurd experience, and also the helpless judgment of a deflected fate.
The invisible hammer finally landed with a deafening roar. And the man’s body finally stopped trembling.
The rain stopped.
“Are you feeling better?” Li Qingran looked at the man slumped on the ground, feeling somewhat worried.
But he hadn’t done anything wrong, right? Between Alphas, isn’t it standard to use the violence of pheromone suppression to make the other party calm down? Perhaps the side effect was just making the suppressed party weak.
Li Qingran didn’t want to dwell on it for too long. Besides, the man had indeed calmed down, so this part of the plot should be over. At least he was no longer holding onto him without letting go.
The Alpha, soaked to the bone, took a deep breath. He reached up to remove the heavy knitted hat from his head and looked down at the transparent umbrella with several broken ribs, ultimately deciding to let it stay there with the pile of furniture.
Propping himself up by a table leg, Li Qingran rubbed his aching ribs and prepared to leave. He was really going to be late.
However, before he could take a single step, the hem of his jacket, which had finally been released, was grabbed again. He instinctively looked back and saw that the Alpha, who had been leaning against the wall, had sat up straight.
“What is your name?” Likely because he had been suppressed by pheromones for too long, the man’s voice sounded a bit raspy.
Li Qingran blinked. “Are you important?”
“What?” The man clearly didn’t process what Li Qingran was saying, but Li Qingran didn’t wait for him to react.
In the alley where the rain had stopped, only the tiles on the wall continued to drip water persistently. The droplets reflected the yellow light shining in from the alley entrance, making both their silhouettes even more blurry.
“I’ll bet you’re quite important.”
Before the man could look up and see him clearly, Li Qingran reached out to pull the man’s fingers off of him and turned around, leaving only three words behind:
“Su Jingyi.”
He said:
“My name is Su Jingyi.”
