- Chapter 4 - Cannon Fodder Ex-Boyfriend (4), Green Again
“And you, Gu Shiyu! Is this fun for you? Every day it is ‘the Su family’ this and ‘the Su family’ that. Anyone who didn’t know better would think you are the one named Su! Why are you so concerned about our family? If you ask me, you might as well just change your last name to Su and have my dad adopt you as a son. It would save him the trouble of forcing me to get engaged to you every single day!”
Su Jingyi’s voice pulled Gu Shiyu’s gaze back.
He looked down at the Omega in the backseat. Qi Ziyan was holding Su Jingyi back with all his might, yet the Omega persisted in glaring at him, becoming even more arrogant the moment Gu Shiyu looked his way. Gu Shiyu did not get angry as the other expected, nor did he seem to care about the provocative insult that had just been hurled at him.
The expression on Gu Shiyu’s face did not change in the slightest.
The Alpha, wearing gold-rimmed glasses, merely gave Su Jingyi an expressionless glance before shifting his gaze away. He ducked into the car, closed the door, and started the engine, driving toward the most luxurious hotel in the city center, a place currently buzzing with excitement for Old Master Su’s 70th birthday banquet.
The sword-drawn tension in the car dissipated mostly because one party refused to respond.
However, after his unilateral outburst, Su Jingyi did not feel the refreshing sense of release he had hoped for. On the contrary, the fire in his heart burned even brighter.
Because of Gu Shiyu’s flat reaction, Su Jingyi felt the stifling frustration of punching cotton. This was not the first time he had felt this way. It could be said that from the day he met Gu Shiyu, whenever the Alpha followed the elders’ orders to discipline or restrain him, he would put on this same deadpan act.
Silence.
Disregard.
No matter how much Su Jingyi acted out, even if he hit or cursed him, Gu Shiyu would only look at him expressionlessly. He was like an emotionless robot, focused solely on completing the instructions entered by a user. As for the method of completion, or the emotions and feelings of the target during the process, they were not within his scope of consideration.
Even if the target of those instructions was the Omega he would very likely be engaged to and eventually marry.
Freak!
Lunatic!
He is seriously sick!
The more Su Jingyi thought about it, the angrier he got. He looked forward.
Clearly, Gu Shiyu had dressed up meticulously for tonight’s banquet. His usually messy hair was combed back, which, combined with the slightly reflecting gold-rimmed glasses, made him look both elegant and mature, as well as haughty to an inhuman degree.
But to Su Jingyi, it just looked like extreme sycophancy, because his father and grandfather loved it when the younger generation dressed in such a steady and mature manner.
The more he looked, the more annoyed he became. By the time they parked, even though Qi Ziyan was trying his best to cover his mouth, Su Jingyi still managed to struggle and shout a sentence as he stepped out of the car:
“Gu Shiyu, just give up! No matter how much you suck up to them, even if I, Su Jingyi, die in this lifetime, I will absolutely never get engaged to you!”
With a loud thud, the black Maybach shook slightly. When Gu Shiyu looked back, he could only see a furious back disappearing into the hotel. That aura of “killing gods and Buddhas alike” made it clear, even from behind, that the Omega’s mood was currently at rock bottom.
“I told you, you should not have made him angry.”
Qi Ziyan, who had failed to grab Su Jingyi so they could enter together, turned back to glare at the Alpha who was still sitting calmly in the driver’s seat.
“Could you not just tell him that you went to Yaxi to find him because you were worried he would be hurt by that Alpha named Li-whatever? You drove so fast I thought I was going to die on the way! You were clearly worried about him, yet you insisted on bringing up the Su family’s reputation. Now look, your good intentions have been treated like dirt.”
Gu Shiyu tapped the steering wheel and said nothing.
Qi Ziyan did not expect a proper answer. He gave a long sigh, and remembering what Gu Shiyu had said before asking him to go to Yaxi together, he could not help but ask:
“But Old Gu, how did you know that Li-whatever was about to mark Xiao Jiu at that exact moment?”
Gu Shiyu did not answer. Instead, he asked a question of his own:
“Do you know about Su Jingyi sending an Omega abroad yesterday?”
“I know,” Qi Ziyan replied. “It was the one from the dance academy who exchanged contact info with Xiao Jiu’s boyfriend during the freshman orientation, right? Do you remember? Xiao Jiu drank nearly a table’s worth of whiskey because of that Omega and even made a scene about wanting to mark that Li guy. He was really out of his mind; how could an Omega mark an Alpha? But why bring that up? Wait! You do not mean Xiao Jiu’s boyfriend hooked up with that Omega again?!”
Gu Shiyu: “To be precise, he hooked up with Su Jingyi, who was using that Omega’s WeChat account.”
“Not really, wait. Holy crap!”
After sorting out this complicated information, Qi Ziyan’s eyes widened like saucers.
“And he still went there to let the guy mark him?! And then yelled at the two of us until we were covered in dog blood?! What kind of soul-stealing potion did that scum Alpha give Xiao Jiu? He’s been cheated on like this, and Xiao Jiu still won’t let go? Has he lost his brain from being in love?”
“Do you want them to break up?”
Just as Qi Ziyan was venting his frustration, Gu Shiyu suddenly spoke. The voice was so abrupt and quick that Qi Ziyan did not even react.
“What did you say?”
“I said,” Gu Shiyu became very patient at this moment, “do you want them to break up?”
“Of course I do.”
This time Qi Ziyan heard him clearly and said without hesitation:
“You have to kick a scum Alpha like that to the curb immediately. You cannot keep him around for the New Year! Xiao Jiu is something else, too. There is no need to endure this much just to spite his father.”
But then again:
“Xiao Jiu can even endure him cheating. What other way is there to tear them apart?”
“That will require your help.”
Gu Shiyu raised his eyes to the rearview mirror. Within his gaze, the Omega with chestnut-colored curls was clearly stunned. He widened his eyes, pointing a slender white finger at his own nose in disbelief.
“Me?”
“That is right! It is the second male lead, the Protagonist Shou’s childhood best friend, the emotional wingman and glue of the trio!”
In the quiet of the lab, 888’s voice was excited and loud. Fortunately, only Li Qingran could hear it.
Reaching out to rub his ear, Li Qingran took off his sterile gloves and tossed them into the trash. Regarding the series of plans by the Protagonist Gong that 888 had just described, he did not share the joy reflected in the system’s program calculations.
He calmly stretched his neck, which was sore from looking down for so long, and then said flatly:
“How is this any different from my previous mission plot?”
It was the same cheating plot as before.
“There is no other way. Did the mission not fail on our normal world line?”
888 also expressed helplessness, but looking on the bright side:
“This time, the plot is being driven by the Protagonist Gong and the second male lead. The Protagonist Shou definitely won’t be able to find out in advance and disrupt the plot. We can successfully finish the mission and clock out!”
Li Qingran remained expressionless: “You said that last time, too.”
“Well, last time was mainly because the Protagonist Shou moved the person away early, so you did not actually commit a substantial act of cheating. Do not all those ‘love brains’ comfort themselves like that? As long as the other person did not really cheat, they can tolerate it and keep using them!”
Is that how the saying goes?
Li Qingran was a bit speechless, but since the mission was set, he could only follow it.
Throwing his lab coat into the specialized washing machine, Li Qingran changed into casual clothes, put on his hat and mask, and went out to work.
Whether it was a bad omen or just Li Qingran’s own bad luck, he had stayed in the lab all day while the sky was clear, but the moment he left school for his part-time job at the bar, a thick dark cloud gathered overhead.
A few steps further, and raindrops the size of beans began to pitter-patter down.
Without an umbrella, Li Qingran could only duck into a nearby convenience store to hide from the rain. His reaction had been quick, but the rain was so heavy and sudden that by the time he entered the store, his knitted hat was soaked.
His mask was also damp, sticking to his face like a large piece of gum that had been chewed for too long, slimy and suffocating.
Li Qingran decided to just take them off.
Actually, after he and Su Jingyi had effectively torn off the facade, he did not need to dress up like a midnight murderer to play the role of a “good and obedient boyfriend,” but he had still worn them when he left. To him now, it made no difference whether he wore one layer of skin or two.
The kind clerk took his knitted hat to help dry it. While waiting, Li Qingran held a cup of hot Oden soup and looked out the window.
The nearby intersection entered a long red light after a brief yellow. The vehicles coming from the opposite direction slowed down, one by one, like a game in which time was infinitely delayed.
Li Qingran felt inexplicably irritable. The young man waiting at the red light inside his car was not feeling much better.
“No, Old Gu, are you sure Xiao Jiu won’t hate me for doing this? I definitely know I am doing it for his own good, but the question is whether he knows. Fine, since you put it that way, I, Qi Ziyan, will risk my life to accompany a gentleman today! No, what kind of talk is that? Do you think I am like Xiao Jiu? Facing a scum man and still”
Qi Ziyan gave a cold huff. His round apricot eyes tilted upward slightly in defiance, then he glanced out the window out of boredom.
He happened to see a convenience store at the intersection and the boy sitting in front of its only floor-to-ceiling window.
Coincidentally, the other person also happened to look up. The orange light from above cascaded over him, wrapping him in a soft glow. A raindrop fell onto the glass pane in front of him, and as he blinked, it meandered its way down.
For a moment, it was hard to tell if that drop of water had fallen from the window or from his eye.
Qi Ziyan’s eyes grew even wider. His hand, which had been gripping the steering wheel, instinctively moved toward the window control.
However, in the next second, a loud honk erupted from behind him, echoing over the entire Riverview Avenue.
Qi Ziyan finally snapped back to his senses. He did not know if his heart was pounding because of the car behind him or for some other reason, but it would not stop thumping. He felt a bit dazed, as if a veil had been pulled over his eyes, making everything look blurry.
He quickly recovered, though, returning his hand to the steering wheel and calmly answering the question from the other end of the phone regarding his brief silence.
“Ah, it is nothing. It is just. Green again.”
“What? Ah? No, it is not. I was talking about the traffic light, of course!”
