- The Cannon Fodder Real Young Master is a Slime?!
- Chapter 5 - Putting on the Wedding Ring, the Entire Slime Is About to Get Scorched From Sunbathing...
The phone vibrated, and as expected, two 60-second voice messages appeared in Shi Yunmu’s WeChat chat window from his father.
It was glaringly obvious just how utterly furious the recipient of that abrupt cash gift demand truly was.
Choosing to completely ignore and not even read the messages, Shi Yunmu slipped his phone away. Thinking back to the sigh the human had let out just moments ago, he assumed the man was stressing over the situation. In an attempt to comfort him, he said, “Don’t worry, I will absolutely get that money.”
Lu Que: “…”
Lu Que: “I am not worried about that.”
Then what are you worried about?
Before Shi Yunmu could figure it out, Lu Que lowered his eyelids and pulled out an object. “Here, put this on.”
“What is this?” The youth’s gaze fell upon his hand. The silver band reflected the bright sunlight, gleaming a bit sharply.
Lu Que said, “A wedding ring.”
The band was minimalist and sleek. Compared to other extravagant rings, it might have seemed rather plain, but the slime wasn’t picky at all.
He wasn’t particularly interested in flashy, glittering things. He wasn’t like his friend if his friend saw a plain band without a single diamond, they would definitely express deep dissatisfaction.
Cheerfully extending his hand, Shi Yunmu’s eyes curved into crescents. “Thank you, Hubby! Hubby, put it on me!”
Startled for a fraction of a second, the man rubbed the plain ring, the look in his eyes turning unreadable. “You don’t think…”
He didn’t finish his sentence, pausing mid-thought.
“Don’t think what?” Shi Yunmu tilted his head, his excitement fading slightly. Why is this human always speaking in riddles?
In the end, Lu Que swallowed the rest of his question back down. “It’s nothing.”
He lowered his head, a few strands of long hair slipping over his shoulder and gently brushing against the back of Shi Yunmu’s extended hand. “I’ll put it on you.”
The size was a perfect fit, sliding effortlessly onto the youth’s ring finger.
Shi Yunmu raised his arm, angling the ring directly into the sunlight, and praised, “So pretty, so pretty.”
“I’ll put yours on—” Before the word “on” could fully leave his mouth, Shi Yunmu looked back and realized the man had already put his own ring on.
The silver band sat snugly on his well-defined, slender finger. As the finger bent, the ring shifted along with it, glinting with light.
Widening his luminous green eyes, Shi Yunmu looked shocked. “You’re not going to let me help you put it on?!”
The man pressed his lips together slightly, avoiding the slime’s reproachful glare. “No need, I can just do it myself.”
As if trying to prevent Shi Yunmu from throwing a tantrum, he glanced up at the blazing midday sun beating down directly overhead and immediately added, “It’s time to go home.”
“Huh? Wait a minute!”
Around noon, the car came to a stop beneath the apartment building. Lu Que picked up his phone to reply to a message, then turned his head to look at the person playing on his phone. “What are you eating for lunch?”
Shi Yunmu misunderstood. “Can I order specific dishes?”
Lu Que said flatly, “You can order takeout.”
Shi Yunmu: “?”
He turned his head slowly, a sudden spark of inspiration hitting him as he actually deciphered the underlying meaning. “Are you not eating at home for lunch, Hubby?”
Tapping his finger against the steering wheel, Lu Que gave a quiet, “Mm.”
He needed to head over to the office to confirm the details regarding yesterday’s magical beasts, as well as track down the “culprit” responsible for the deaths of those creatures.
Although he strongly suspected that the “person” right beside him was the killer, he still lacked concrete evidence.
However, leaving for work provided an excellent opportunity to gather proof. While they were away at the Civil Affairs Bureau, the hidden detection devices required to measure the strength of magical beasts had already been installed in discreet locations throughout the apartment.
It wasn’t just inside Lu Que’s home; tracking instruments for magical beasts had been deployed across the entire residential complex.
One reason was to monitor Shi Yunmu. The other was to prevent Lu Que from being targeted by another retaliatory attack. Quite a few magical beasts roaming C City wanted the members of the Special Security Section dead, and currently, Lu Que was the one being targeted most ruthlessly.
Shi Yunmu had never ordered takeout before and was itching to try. Getting thoroughly excited just fantasizing about what he, a single slime, was going to eat, Shi Yunmu became much more pleasant toward Lu Que.
The youth turned his head and curled the corners of his lips into a sweet, obedient smile. “Don’t worry, Hubby, I’ll be super good!”
Meeting Shi Yunmu’s sparkling eyes, Lu Que spoke without any expression: “I don’t believe you.”
His smile vanishing instantly, Shi Yunmu snapped, “How can you say that about me!”
Lu Que didn’t answer, only saying, “Go on upstairs.”
Huffing with annoyance, the youth opened the car door thoroughly displeased and stepped out.
Lu Que watched his figure disappear into the apartment entrance before driving away.
Lu Que’s apartment was on the sixth floor. It was an old residential area with no elevator installed, meaning they had to rely entirely on walking.
Yesterday’s door lock had been destroyed by the magical beasts, but someone had been sent over this morning to install a brand-new digital code lock. This time, the passcode had been shared with Shi Yunmu, and after studying it for a moment, he entered easily.
The Dust Demon finally poked its head out from the youth’s thin jacket, taking a massive gulp of fresh air. “Wow, I thought I was seriously going to suffocate to death in there!”
It looked around the surroundings, its peripheral vision catching the ring on Shi Yunmu’s hand. Instantly growing alert, it said, “My Lord, this ring… could it be engraved with a magic circle designed to seal you?!”
“…” Shi Yunmu disdainfully flaunted the ring in front of the paranoid Dust Demon. “There’s nothing on it. Stop overthinking.”
Even though he currently didn’t possess much mana, as a slime who used to be utterly invincible throughout the Abyss, he declared with absolute certainty, “While humans have many ways to deal with magical beasts, magic is definitely not one of them. I’ve only ever met one fellow who could use magic, and he died ages ago.”
“Who?” the Dust Demon wanted to ask, but the slime’s attention had already drifted elsewhere.
Scanning the living room, the mess from yesterday was nowhere to be seen Lu Que had even replaced the sofa covers with brand-new ones.
Last night it had been too dark to see anything, so it was only this morning that Shi Yunmu finally had the time to properly appreciate his current residence.
Cleanliness was the very first impression of Lu Que’s home. There were no decorative ornaments around; the man seemed to hold zero interest in such trifling knickknacks. The apartment wasn’t considered large by C City standards, but it still featured three bedrooms and a living room.
Through the floor-to-ceiling windows, one could see the central garden of the residential area, where two or three ducks were drifting leisurely across the lake.
Collapsing onto the sofa, Shi Yunmu picked up his phone and began scrolling through the yellow kangaroo takeout app. “Hmm… what should I eat?”
As he was browsing, a notification suddenly popped up at the top of his screen. It was from “Dad”: Bring your husband over for dinner tonight.
Jellocloud: He’s not free.
Dad: Then you must come alone.
Dad: I am not negotiating with you. You must be there.
Jellocloud: Then send over the wedding gift cash first!
Dad: …
Reluctantly, the other party ended up transferring 200,000 RMB to him.
Upon receiving it, Shi Yunmu still felt nothing but disdain: You’re so poor.
Didn’t they say wealthy families transferred at least five million at a time?
Dad: Shi Yunmu, don’t push your luck!!
Shi Yunmu left him on read.
But since the money had been successfully secured anyway, he opened his private chat with Lu Que, eager to share the good news.
Shi Yunmu and Lu Que had only added each other as friends this morning, so the chat history was completely blank, save for the single friend verification message. Lu Que’s profile picture contrasted drastically with his cold personality it was actually a picture of a pet rabbit.
There was no telling if it was just an image from the internet or a pet raised by someone he knew.
Jellocloud: I received the wedding gift cash! I’ll transfer it to you!
L: No need. Just keep it.
L: Have you eaten yet?
Jellocloud: Not yet, Hubby =(
[You have received a transfer]
L: Eat first.
Jellocloud: Received
Jellocloud: Thank you, Hubby! [kissing.jpg] [kissing.jpg]
L: …You’re welcome.
He didn’t forget to report his schedule: Hubby, I have to go to a family gathering tonight 0v0
The other side displayed “typing…” for quite a while before finally replying with a single sentence: Okay, I’ll drop you off tonight.
Okay, okay! Love you, Hubby!
Having fully mastered the essence of human partner communication, Shi Yunmu sent a cute little kitten-kissing emoji. He received no reply, indicating the man had probably gone back to work.
After picking out a hearty takeout meal and eating his fill, Shi Yunmu found himself entirely idle. He decided to head downstairs for a stroll.
While he called it a stroll, in reality, he wanted to wait around like a fisherman waiting for a bite, checking to see if any gullible magical beasts would willingly walk into his trap.
The moment he stepped downstairs, another message from Lu Que arrived: Where did you go?
Staring at the message, Shi Yunmu fell into deep thought.
Having earned a slight promotion in status, the Dust Demon was allowed to follow him downstairs and could glimpse Shi Yunmu’s phone screen. It gasped in terror, “He is absolutely spying on you!”
“What do you know?” The slime sighed. “This is clearly called being clingy.”
Dust Demon: “?”
“Humans are just so clingy toward slimes,” Shi Yunmu complained. “Is he trying to break down my willpower by being so attached?”
If this kept up, the slime would become more and more reluctant to swallow the human whole!
The Dust Demon agreed fiercely, “My Lord, he is absolutely plotting exactly that!”
Shi Yunmu said, “I need to put him in his place a bit.”
He typed back aggressively: I’m just walking around the neighborhood, stop asking so many questions!
Dust Demon: “?”
My Lord, do you call that putting him in his place?
The other side clearly failed to pick up on any warning tone whatsoever: …Okay.
Since it was a weekday, the young adults had all gone to work, leaving mostly elderly residents wandering about the neighborhood. Coupled with the fact that it was an August afternoon, hardly anyone could be seen outside.
Shi Yunmu walked three full laps around the complex, pacing until the elderly men playing chess under the shade of the trees began staring at him. They couldn’t comprehend why a young person would wander around aimlessly in the scorching sun without even holding an umbrella.
Is he training his endurance or something?
Finally halting his steps, the youth stood under the blazing sun, contemplating for a moment. “Strange, where are all the magical beasts?”
Within a 300-meter radius, there didn’t seem to be a single magical beast around. Were there no magical beasts that operated during the daytime? Could it be that all the ones who migrated to the human world possessed nocturnal habits?
The Dust Demon kept its mouth shut, but internally it cried out in protest: Isn’t the reason there are no magical beasts obvious? It’s because of your massive “spring cleaning” yesterday!
They walked aimlessly toward a secluded corner of the neighborhood, which housed the outdoor fitness equipment. Shi Yunmu looked around, his gaze locking onto a swing set.
A human swing?
“Is it fun?” Shi Yunmu muttered.
The Dust Demon urged him on, “You can give it a try!”
That was an excellent idea, and Shi Yunmu adopted it. He walked over to the swing, completely disregarding how scorching hot the seat had become from the sun, and plopped straight down, swaying slightly.
However, he did possess the height of a normal adult human male, and with his long legs bent awkwardly, he couldn’t get enough momentum to make the swing fly high.
But it wasn’t as if he lacked options.
The youth’s silhouette vanished, and in his place appeared a single slime, deflating into a puddle on the swing seat.
There was no sun in the Abyss, but slimes loved the sun. The summer sun in the human world happened to be fantastic, allowing him to properly bask in it.
Meanwhile, the Dust Demon, who thoroughly detested the sun, quietly hid in the shadows. It didn’t dare attempt an escape, terrified that it would be captured all over again, rendering all its previous efforts entirely futile.
There were no surveillance cameras installed around the fitness equipment, and nobody came by. Shi Yunmu simply lay there until the sun began to sink in the west.
The entire slime had almost been sunbathed to the point of boiling over.
Having just returned from work and searching all over the neighborhood before stumbling upon this exact scene, Lu Que: “…”
This time, it was his turn to fall into deep thought.
