- The Cannon Fodder Real Young Master is a Slime?!
- Chapter 3 - Examination – Aren't We Supposed to Move in Together?
Shi Yunmu possessed an excellent memory. As they neared the residential building, he naturally turned around, intending to head toward Lu Que’s apartment.
However, after only a few steps, someone grabbed him by the collar.
Kicking his legs in slight confusion, the young man tilted up his dirty, blood-stained face to look at the man holding him.
What is he doing?
Lu Que lowered his gaze. His fingers twitched slightly, as if he could not stand the other party’s filthy clothes and messy face, but he did his best to ignore it. “We aren’t going back to the apartment for now.”
“Then where are we going?” Shi Yunmu asked.
Lu Que replied, “My workplace.” Pausing for a moment, he offered a reason. “To take a statement.”
Shi Yunmu processed this for a moment. Essentially, regardless of whether they had caught the fugitive, he was still considered someone who was present at the scene. It was only logical that the human police would want him to give a statement.
“Okay, I’ll go with you,” Shi Yunmu nodded and agreed.
Not expecting this fellow to agree so readily, a flash of surprise crossed Lu Que’s eyes. His lips moved, but in the end, he did not say anything more: “Mm, let’s go.”
When the Special Security Section of the Security Bureau went out, they used two cars and five people. When they returned, it became two cars and six people.
Shi Yunmu sat right in the middle of the back seat, sitting rigidly upright like a well-behaved primary school student. His pine-green eyes darted around; he looked to his left, where a cold-faced woman sat, and then he looked to his right, encountering Lu Que’s expressionless face once again.
On the other hand, Qi Tao and Ming He were nowhere to be seen, likely riding in the other vehicle.
The driver of their car was a man in his early thirties with a square face. He spoke frankly and always had a smile on his face.
As he drove, he glanced at the three stiff figures in the rearview mirror and could not help but laugh. “Why are you all being so serious? Relax a bit.”
The woman glanced at the two people next to her. “I don’t want to be either, but they are very serious.”
Shi Yunmu copied her mannerisms, glancing over at Lu Que. “I don’t want to be either, but he is very serious.”
Lu Que: “…”
The driving man chuckled again. “You guys are really amusing.”
“I heard from Xiao Tao and Xiao He,” the man continued. “This is our younger brother’s wife… uh, sister-in-law, or brother-in-law?” He was a bit uncertain about how to address Shi Yunmu, switching between terms hesitantly.
Shi Yunmu glanced at Lu Que again, wearing an obedient look that said, ‘I’ll listen to whatever you say.’
Lu Que let out another sigh and said, “Brother Xiangyu, just call him by his name.”
Shen Xiangyu laughed. “That sounds too distant.”
Lu Que remained silent. But this fiancé of his was freshly minted, practically “delivered” to his doorstep just today. Wasn’t it only natural for them to be distant?
Yet, the fiancé who was supposed to feel distant was incredibly familiar with everyone, nodding his head repeatedly. “It is indeed very distant!”
“Brother Xiangyu,” he copied the way Lu Que addressed him, saying, “Just call me brother-in-law!”
Lu Que closed his eyes. Shen Xiangyu burst into hearty laughter and readily agreed, while the cold-faced woman could not help but curl her lips slightly.
The car ride, which was pure torment for Lu Que, finally ended ten minutes later. Lu Que glanced sideways. This time, instead of asking someone else to escort Shi Yunmu away, he spoke directly to him: “Come with me.”
Shi Yunmu gave an “Oh” and followed Lu Que out of the car.
The car door clicked shut, but the woman and Shen Xiangyu were in no hurry to leave.
Tapping the steering wheel, Shen Xiangyu smiled. “Fang Shu, what do you think of this kid?”
The woman pondered. “I can’t tell for sure, but I lean toward trusting the Captain’s judgment.”
Shen Xiangyu shook his head. “I’ll have to reserve my opinion on that. If a magical creature can manage to conceal its presence and release it at will like this…”
“Then I’m afraid we will be facing much greater pressure, as well as an even more intelligent and cunning enemy.”
Automatically following along once more, Shi Yunmu surveyed the building in front of him.
“C City Security Bureau…?” The young man read the name of the unit blankly, raising his eyes to look at Lu Que. “You work here.”
Lu Que glanced at the grand characters written boldly on the large arched gate, nodding. “Mm.”
Shi Yunmu: “Then your work must be very hard.”
Lu Que: “Mm.”
Shi Yunmu: “Catching fugitives doesn’t sound easy at all.”
Lu Que: “Mm.”
Shi Yunmu took a few quick steps to walk side by side with him, staring intently at Lu Que. “Hubby, can you only say ‘Mm’?”
Lu Que instinctively wanted to say “Mm” again, but catching himself, he averted his eyes from the youth’s burning gaze. His tone finally carried a hint of fluctuation: “…No.”
The young man nodded thoughtfully. “Oh, I thought saying only ‘Mm’ was normal.”
“Lu Que!”
A resounding, forceful shout interrupted the human and the slime’s discussion on the word “Mm.” Shi Yunmu turned his face toward the sound. A middle-aged man, whose very appearance commanded authority without him even trying to look angry, strode over with knitted brows, looking rather furious.
Hmm? Is this my marriage partner’s boss?
The middle-aged man shouted, “You led your team out again without submitting a report!”
Faced with the middle-aged man’s raging fury, Lu Que did not even lift an eyebrow. “Submitting a report takes too much time. There was no time.”
“That is no excuse for acting first and reporting later!” The middle-aged man was still very angry, though his aura weakened slightly as he scanned Lu Que from head to toe to check if he was injured.
Even so, his words remained sharp. “By not following procedure, you are showing disregard for the rules.”
Seemingly accustomed to the middle-aged man’s bark-is-worse-than-his-bite way of speaking, Lu Que calmly replied, “Next time, I will report first.”
The middle-aged man coughed, finally appeased. His attention shifted to the presence beside them that was simply impossible to ignore. “Cough, this person is…?”
After all, the original owner’s memories felt somewhat detached to the slime. For a slime, it was naturally a newcomer to the human world, making it feel quite curious about the various ways humans communicated.
The young man’s eyes shone as brightly as searchlights, looking as though he might pull out a bag of snacks to munch on at any second while spectating their interaction like a television drama.
This time, he did not wait for Lu Que to introduce him. Before the other man could speak, he took the initiative to introduce himself: “I am his fiancé!”
Lu Que let out a sigh.
The middle-aged man nodded blankly. “Oh, fiancé, not bad, not bad…” Then he suddenly snapped to reality. “Fiancé?! Lu Que, if you’re getting married, how could you—”
Before he could finish his sentence, another tall, thin, middle-aged man patted him on the shoulder. “Hey, Old Yan, the moment I came down, I heard you lecturing young Lu again.”
The man called “Old Yan” turned around, muttering, “This doesn’t really count as a lecture.”
The tall, thin man smiled, turning his gaze toward Shi Yunmu. He spoke with a beaming face, “You are young Lu’s fiancé? Here to visit his workplace? Welcome, welcome.”
Shi Yunmu nodded in acknowledgment, even mimicking the social rules constructed by humans, straightening his spine. “Thank you, sorry for bothering you so late.”
The tall, thin man smiled. He turned his gentle gaze back to Lu Que and said, “Why don’t you let this kid of yours sit in the office for a bit while we have a private chat?”
Old Yan wanted to say something more, but he was immediately blocked and pulled away by the tall, thin man.
Lu Que glanced at Shi Yunmu. He was not entirely certain if the “person” who currently looked so well-behaved would truly sit quietly in the office and wait.
To be safe, he sent messages to Qi Tao and Chen Fangyi, asking them to come over and “keep company” with Shi Yunmu, leaving only after making sure everything was set.
Inside the laboratory of the detection department, Old Yan paced around with his arms crossed, thoroughly shocked. “What you mean to say is, your fiancé might no longer be human, but a magical creature?”
He spread his hands and asked, “But Lu Que, this requires evidence… Do you have proof?”
Lu Que raised his hand and pointed to his eye.
The tall, thin man took a look and reminded him, “Lu Que, you must understand there is a certain possibility that this is due to a traumatic iris injury, or perhaps heterochromia iridum.”
“It’s different,” Lu Que said flatly. “His eye color is extremely unusual.”
Old Yan sighed, recognizing Lu Que’s persistence regarding this matter. “Then how do you intend to prove it?”
“A blood test?” As the head of the detection department, the tall, thin, middle-aged man suggested.
“That works,” Lu Que nodded, agreeing to it.
Old Yan added, his expression turning much more severe, “But if the result shows otherwise, Lu Que, you will have to take responsibility for this.”
Leaning against the wooden table holding the visitor log, the man raised his dark eyes, which remained entirely unruffled. “I will take responsibility.”
The laboratory door opened and closed; Lu Que stepped out.
The laboratory grew much quieter. Finally, Old Yan took another deep breath. “That kid Lu Que definitely hasn’t given up.”
The tall, thin man shook his head. “You know how he is; he has always been extremely certain of his instincts.”
“If he uncovers more evidence later on, I’m afraid he might take action directly and kill that child with his own hands.”
Old Yan turned to look at him. “Old Wen, do you also think that child is a magical creature?”
Old Wen smiled. “I can’t judge that; I’ve never been to the front lines. But…”
“I get the feeling that child won’t pose much of a threat, at least not to us.”
“Draw blood?”
Shi Yunmu looked at the young woman in front of him in confusion. “Why do you need to draw my blood?”
Qi Tao wanted to cry but had no tears, suddenly getting tongue-tied. “Uh, about that…”
The Captain was truly swift and decisive, directly coming over to give her an order, even dragging along a colleague from the detection department to work overtime late at night.
He didn’t give her any time to come up with a proper excuse at all.
On the surface, she showed no signs of panic, racking her brain to reply, “It might be because they are worried the fugitive carries some kind of virus, or that your wounds might get infected or something. Don’t worry, this will be very quick.”
After a moment of hesitation, Shi Yunmu looked down at the dried red blood on his body and finally nodded reluctantly, “Alright.”
He extended his arm, waiting obediently for it to be swiped with a layer of iodine before the needle pricked him.
The person from the detection department quickly drew a vial of blood and took it away. Qi Tao looked at the young man who had been sitting there for a while, still looking utterly filthy. Even though she knew his identity as a human was questionable, she still couldn’t bear to see him like this.
She handed over a few wet wipes. “Wipe yourself down a bit. It must feel uncomfortable to have this all over your body.”
Shi Yunmu took them and wiped his face, but he refrained from wiping the blood on his forehead—to prevent them from discovering that the wound had already healed completely without leaving a trace.
“Hmm? Is something wrong?”
Once he finished wiping his face clean, he noticed that both Chen Fangyi and Qi Tao were staring at him, causing him to tilt his head in confusion.
Qi Tao snapped out of it, wiping away imaginary drool from the corner of her mouth. “It was too dark earlier so I didn’t notice, but Yunmu, you are really… good-looking.”
Though the young man sitting on the sofa appeared somewhat disheveled, his facial features were exceptionally clear and clean, and the curve at the corners of his eyes felt gentle. With just a few glances, people would instinctively develop a sense of affection and protectiveness toward him.
Chen Fangyi nodded, agreeing with Qi Tao’s words. “Lu Que really struck gold.”
“Who struck gold?”
The person in question entered the room holding a brown paper file folder, asking coldly out of nowhere.
The two subordinates who were gossiping quickly turned their backs around, pretending to be incredibly busy with no time to discuss their superior’s private life.
Shi Yunmu exposed them without the slightest hesitation. “They were praising me for being good-looking.” He pointed at Lu Que and said earnestly, “You struck gold.”
Lu Que: “…”
The ones who had uttered those words, Qi Tao and Chen Fangyi, lowered their heads even further.
Lu Que fixed his gaze on the youth. The face tilted up toward him looked exceptionally fair after being wiped clean, making the bloodstains on his forehead appear all the more gruesome.
Lowering his eyelids, Lu Que’s grip on the edge of the brown paper folder tightened slightly. He quickly averted his gaze and said, “My matters are settled. Is his statement finished?”
Chen Fangyi, who was responsible for “taking the statement,” helped answer, “It’s already taken care of.”
“Then let’s all head back early and handle the rest tomorrow,” Lu Que said. “Shi Yunmu, come with me.”
Shi Yunmu quickly stood up. “Okay!”
Lu Que looked back at him again. The young man, who seemed somewhat oblivious, met his gaze openly and flashed a brilliant smile.
The man’s fingers rubbed against the paper folder before he placed it down on his desk. “Let’s go back.”
It was already the early hours of the morning by the time they reached home.
The living room light switched on, finally revealing the utter mess before the human and the slime.
Lu Que frowned slightly. He handed the daily necessities he had just purchased from a 24-hour convenience store to Shi Yunmu, pointing toward the bathroom. “Go wash up first. I’ll tidy up a bit.”
Shi Yunmu let out an “Oh” and went to wash up obediently.
By the time he came out, the living room wasn’t much cleaner. The man was still sweeping without raising his head, pointing toward one of the bedrooms. “Your room.”
Shi Yunmu realized belatedly that the other party had prioritized cleaning out a guest room for him to stay in.
Only…
The young man stood there without moving, his green eyes fixed on Lu Que, remaining completely silent.
“What is it?” Lu Que raised his eyes and asked.
Shi Yunmu spoke in a wronged tone, “Aren’t we… supposed to move in together?”
We aren’t going to sleep in the same room?
