- Chapter 11 - Do I Have to Go Too? There’s No Helping It, a Handsome Guy Attracts Endless Drama.
Shi Yunmu: “……”
You humans sure are persistent when it comes to love.
He had no choice but to say, “I have no intention of getting a divorce.”
Seeing that Shi Yunmu had absolutely no intention of adding him on WeChat, the freshman could only leave in disappointment.
After those two freshmen left, the influx of arriving students slowed down, finally giving the class monitor a chance to chat. He nudged his chair a bit closer to Shi Yunmu’s position, lowered his voice, and asked in utter shock, “Shi Yunmu, you’re married? When did you tie the knot?”
“Just a couple of days ago, we just got our marriage certificate,” Shi Yunmu replied casually.
The monitor gave him a thumbs-up. “You really know how to keep a secret, you didn’t even post anything on your Moments.”
Shi Yunmu replied, “There’s no real need to post something like that on Moments, is there…?”
The monitor nodded. “True, there’s no need to show off on social media.”
He chatted with Shi Yunmu for a few more minutes before rolling his chair back to play on his phone for a while. But it wasn’t long before he rolled his chair right back over. “Shi Yunmu, quick, look at the school forum!”
“The forum?”
Though called a forum, C University’s platform had actually evolved into a WeChat mini-program where anyone could log in and post.
The monitor showed his screen to Shi Yunmu. “Look here, someone posted your photo on the school forum.”
The youth glanced over. On the phone screen was indeed a campus forum thread titled: Does anyone know this handsome guy? He’s so hot, how come I feel like I’ve never seen him around campus before?
The comments section below was incredibly lively:
Isn’t this that gloomy handsome guy from the School of Journalism and Communication? He’s also the younger brother of our campus heartthrob, syb.
The two of them have a terrible relationship, don’t lump them together in discussion. Careful, or sjh will go crazy and get this thread banned again.
How come he seems a lot more cheerful now? He’s even laughing and talking with the classmate next to him.
Just now I literally saw a freshman asking for his WeChat, but the guy said he’s married.
That’s definitely a lie to trick freshmen!
Does anyone actually think sym is handsome? People actually like someone like him? Did they come from a garbage recycling station?
Would the person above literally die if their mouth wasn’t so foul?
This thread had clearly attracted quite a few of Shi Yubai’s pursuers, who praised one while putting down the other, gradually turning the comments into an all-out war.
Shi Yunmu didn’t particularly care, but he reached out his hand and liked a few comments that praised his looks. “There’s no helping it, a handsome guy attracts endless drama.”
The monitor yelled, “Hey, that’s my account!”
He quickly snatched his phone back, deeply afraid that Shi Yunmu would like a few more comments for him. “But it really does seem like your personality has changed quite a bit…”
“People change.” Shi Yunmu didn’t want to elaborate on the matter and brushed past it lightly.
“And another thing,” the monitor said, adjusting his glasses. “What’s up with your eyes? Are those colored contact lenses?”
Hearing this, Shi Yunmu raised his hand and touched the corner of his eye. “Oh, it’s actually a traumatic iris injury,” he fabricated calmly. “I got hit by a car over the summer vacation and bumped my head.”
The monitor: “……”
Why are you talking about something so terrifying with such a casual breeze?!
In truth, quite a few people had noticed Shi Yunmu’s eyes. However, those who knew perfectly well it was the influence of a magical creature wouldn’t ask; those who had doubts but wanted to save face wouldn’t ask; and those who mindlessly assumed they were colored contacts certainly wouldn’t ask. The monitor was the very first to raise a question about it, and fortunately, he was thoroughly convinced by the horrific accident excuse.
“Let’s not talk about that,” Shi Yunmu shifted the topic. “Are there any newly opened stalls at the food street near the school’s East Gate recently? I want to try them for dinner.”
As a slime, he hadn’t tasted the food street here yet. Just thinking about the street food and delicacies that were incredibly delicious even if the original owner of the body had only visited a handful of times in his memories made the slime salivate.
Contrary to his expectations, upon hearing the words “food street,” the monitor’s expression instantly grew serious. “The food street? You’d better not go there anytime soon.”
Shi Yunmu asked in confusion, “Why?”
The monitor rapidly pulled up his “Little Purple Potato” social media app and showed Shi Yunmu a post he had bookmarked: Mutant strange bird appears in the University Town! Is an urban legend invading reality?
The attached image was a blurry photo of a bird. It was extraordinarily large, sitting completely motionless on a tree branch.
The monitor scrolled through the comments. “Someone’s spiral potato chip was snatched away by this bird. It’s wildly aggressive.”
Little Wei muttered quietly, “This picture is way too blurry. How can anyone tell if it’s a magical beast or a wild animal from this?”
Shi Yunmu asked, “Is this bird called a night heron?”
The monitor paused. “Why do you ask that?”
Shi Yunmu pointed at one of the comments: Is this a night heron?
But there were also refutations beneath that specific comment thread: Can people please stop thinking every single bird that tucks its neck in is a night heron!
The monitor said, “……I think the probability of it being a night heron isn’t very high.”
The two of them continued to scroll down. The direction of the comments was becoming more and more bizarre, with speculations like “environmental pollution” and “a new strain of mad bird disease” popping up one after another. There were even guesses about a “laboratory leak.”
“Actually, the official accounts responded, but everyone is just ignoring it.” The monitor shrugged and pulled up the official reply for Shi Yunmu to see. “They said it’s an aggressive, unidentified wild animal that might carry a new type of fungus. So it’s definitely right for us to be careful. It won’t be too late to hit the food street after waiting it out for a few days.”
Shi Yunmu scrolled back up, staring at the blurry photo of the bird for a moment, lost in thought. “I feel like this thing looks a bit familiar.”
The monitor didn’t take it to heart. “Maybe you saw it on your way back to school.”
“Monitor!” While the two were chatting, a classmate waved at the monitor from a distance. “The Helai information session is about to start, are you going?”
The monitor immediately raised his head to respond, “Yes, yes, yes! Help me save two seats!”
Huh?
Shi Yunmu realized that one of those two seats very likely belonged to him. He pointed at himself, “Do I have to go too?”
The monitor nodded. “Yeah, yeah, let’s go together. It never hurts to listen.”
Shi Yunmu propped his chin up with his hand, his eyes half-closed. “I don’t really want to go……”
The monitor said seriously, “Finding a job is incredibly important. We’re already juniors. Even finding an internship would be good!”
Shi Yunmu: “.”
Humans are so troublesome. It’s still happier to be a magical creature, without having to worry about work and life.
Even until the registration activity ended, Shi Yunmu couldn’t win against the monitor. In the end, he was semi-pushed and semi-dragged along to the lecture hall where the information session was being held.
The two of them, rushing to the session, had no idea that a few minutes later, someone arrived at the registration desk in a massive hurry.
But the registration desk had long been deserted and was completely empty; only the fallen leaves of the parasol trees swirled as they drifted down.
Looking at the Sycamore Avenue which was already being cleaned up, that person completely blanked out. “Holy crap, where am I supposed to find my sister-in-law now?”
He sighed, pulling out his phone. “Forget it, forget it, I’d better just call my sister-in-law directly……”
If I can’t find my sister-in-law, someone is going to murder me!
The moment they entered the auditorium, a long red banner caught everyone’s attention: “Helai Life Technology Information Session.” The two large screens beside it repeatedly played promotional videos filled with a futuristic vibe.
The auditorium was packed with a sea of people, a testament to just how popular Helai Life Technology was.
After all, Helai Life Technology was a renowned company both domestically and internationally, and its Asia-Pacific headquarters was located right here in C City. The employee benefits were excellent, promotion opportunities were abundant, and they not only conducted research in biotechnology but were also heavily involved in the field of artificial intelligence.
It could truly be called a leading enterprise among emerging industries.
Helai came to C University to recruit every year, and the compensation packages they offered were highly enviable. Because of this, so many students had come to attend this information session that the auditorium was blocked to the point where water couldn’t even flow through.
Shi Yunmu and the monitor entered directly through the front door, giving them a clear view of the wide stage as well as the prominent figures gathered in the very first row.
The monitor let out a “Wow.” “It looks like Helai attaches quite a bit of importance to our school.”
He shook his head. “Too bad we are Journalism and Communication majors. If we were in engineering, we probably wouldn’t have to sift through so many job openings with so much effort.”
Shi Yunmu gave a simple, casual response. His gaze swept through the crowd, and without any surprise, his eyes met Shi Yubai’s in the front row.
As expected, how could the protagonist ever be absent from such a grand information session?
“Little brother.” Shi Yubai intentionally called out to Shi Yunmu, flashing a smile. “Did you come to listen with your classmate too?”
The monitor, who had absolutely no reverence for the wealthy and powerful, clearly looked down on Shi Yubai. He crossed his arms and let out a scoffing “Tch.” “The biggest poser has arrived.”
Shi Yubai smiled, and Shi Yunmu smiled back. “Just came to take a look.”
Shi Yubai turned his head, revealing the person beside him, and introduced them with a smile. “Mr. Zhang, this is my younger brother and his classmate. Yunmu, this gentleman next to me is the main head of Helai’s Asia-Pacific region.” He paused for a moment, acting as if it were an afterthought. “Oh right, you entered the university a year later than me, so you’re a junior now, right? Perfect timing. Mr. Zhang, could I trouble you to recommend an internship for my brother?”
The monitor didn’t buy into this act at all. He was still whispering complaints to Shi Yunmu in a low voice. “He just wants to screw with you!”
Shi Yunmu found it amusing and replied quietly, “I can tell.”
On the surface, it looked like he was worrying over his younger brother’s internship, but in reality, wasn’t he just implying that Shi Yunmu’s ability was so poor that he could only rely on the back door?
Sure enough, the head of the Asia-Pacific region laughed it off. “Oh, Yubai, you really care about your brother! However, I can only provide an internal referral. For anything else, your brother will definitely have to rely on his own hard work.”
Shi Yubai sighed. “Since you put it that way, there’s nothing else that can be done……”
He wanted to say a few more words, but Shi Yunmu raised his hand, cutting him off. “No need, thank you. I just came over to look around.”
He tilted his head slightly. “I never said I wanted to intern here anyway. Your desire to bestow charity upon me is a bit too obvious.”
Shi Yubai’s smile stiffened slightly. “How could that be? Yunmu, don’t throw a tantrum.” His tone was helpless, sounding exactly like an older brother gently scolding a naughty younger sibling.
The monitor coughed loudly twice. “My goodness, how come I hear mosquitoes buzzing around? I really should have applied some mosquito repellent before coming over.”
Shi Yunmu nodded. “We really should spray some mosquito repellent.”
The two of them walked up the stairs without giving them any face, appearing completely focused on finding seats.
Mr. Zhang tactfully remained silent and switched the topic gracefully.
Shi Yubai’s dark gaze could only follow Shi Yunmu as he moved upward, right until the moment the youth accidentally bumped into someone.
It happened because Shi Yunmu’s phone rang. He had merely reached out his hand to grab it, not expecting to bump into another person.
“Ah……” The youth’s phone slipped from his hand, rolling down several steps, while the other person’s phone also dropped, landing right by Shi Yunmu’s feet.
He instinctively reached down to help pick it up. Out of the corner of his eye, he caught sight of the un-locked screen of the phone, which was currently running an application.
The Monster Forum……?
What is that?
Before Shi Yunmu could look any closer, his own phone was already handed over to him.
The person who had picked up his phone possessed hands with long fingers as elegant as jade, and their voice was just as smooth and polished. “I’m sorry, I bumped into you…… Are you alright?”
