- Chapter 7 - Bait
The car moved smoothly along the road until the mountain and the ancient mansion hidden within it were no longer visible. Only then did Shang Shiqian withdraw her gaze from the window.
She glanced sideways at Wei Yixian, who had been feigning sleep since getting into the car.
Shang Shiqian wondered to herself: Why did you call me into the car if you weren’t going to say anything?
In truth, Wei Yixian had been waiting for her to converse with the “system.” Unfortunately, Shang Shiqian had grown much quieter after boarding the car.
A vague memory surfaced inexplicably in Wei Yixian’s mind once, she had been forced to share a car with Shang Shiqian for the same banquet. Back then, they had also sat in silence.
But unlike “Shang Shiyu,” Shang Shiqian never looked around restlessly. No matter how beautiful the scenery outside the window, she wouldn’t spare it a glance. Instead, she would close her eyes and simulate chess games in her mind over and over, as if the intersecting lines and black-and-white pieces were her entire world.
And Wei Yixian, too, would focus on her own affairs, never giving Shang Shiqian any special attention.
Their interactions weren’t awkward, they were harmonious.
“Shang Shiyu’s” behavior aligned more with her self-proclaimed background. Coming from the mountains, she naturally brimmed with curiosity about the bustling city.
Wei Yixian could also sense a hint of unease and awkwardness in her.
Shang Shiqian finally spoke up: “May I ask where you’re taking me?”
Wei Yixian removed her glasses and tapped the frame impatiently, her fingers betraying a trace of irritation.
After a few breaths, she put them back on and said, “As I mentioned earlier, you look very much like my wife.”
Shang Shiqian responded uncomfortably, “Mm.”
And then?
Wei Yixian turned to stare at her. “But she’s dead.”
Shang Shiqian offered a sympathetic look. “My condolences.”
I died, but now I’m back. Bet you didn’t see that coming… though it’s just a limited-time one-month revival event.
Wei Yixian gritted her teeth. “I don’t need your pity.”
Shang Shiqian didn’t understand where this sudden anger came from or what she had said wrong.
The next second, Wei Yixian retracted her thorns and asked instead, “Where do you live? I’ll take you home.”
She wanted to test Shang Shiqian.
Unaware of her true intentions, Shang Shiqian replied, “I don’t have a place to stay. I lost my luggage on the way here my wallet, phone, everything I owned was inside.”
Wei Yixian knew she was lying but played along. “What about your ID?”
After a day of adventures, Shang Shiqian was no longer the tight-lipped person who couldn’t answer Xiao Luomeng’s questions that morning. She answered honestly, “I was never registered. I’m undocumented.”
Being deregistered equals never being registered equals being undocumented. Everything I said is true.
This answer didn’t surprise Wei Yixian. After all, this face was fake her old ID would be useless now.
Wei Yixian couldn’t be bothered to keep up the charade and made a startling decision: “Then you’ll come home with me.”
The driver up front appeared focused on the road, but his ears perked up in secret, his mind screaming: President Wei is bringing a woman home!!!
Can you believe it? The first woman President Wei takes to her private residence isn’t even her first love, her white moonlight!
Not even Wei Yixian’s legitimate wife, Fourth Miss Shang, had received such treatment after all, she had been dead for eight years so how could this imposter who resembled Fourth Miss Shang be worthy of it?
Completely unaware that passersby were mentally composing essays about her, Shang Shiqian gasped in shock: So this is the kind of person Wei Yixian is!
But was Wei Yixian’s move really appropriate? Wasn’t this the crucial moment when she was about to reunite with her white moonlight, reigniting their love through confrontation?
While squatting by the roadside earlier, waiting for the Shang family, she had skimmed through the original novel.
According to the plot, after learning that her white moonlight was helping the Zhou family oppose her, Wei Yixian arranged a meeting to negotiate, declaring, “I advise you not to interfere. I will take down the Zhou Corporation no matter what.”
Unexpectedly, the white moonlight handed Wei Yixian a birthday gift and said, “No business talk after work.”
That small gesture instantly dissolved Wei Yixian’s hostility, softening her stance considerably.
Even Shang Shiqian, a mere cannon fodder character, couldn’t help but marvel at the power of a white moonlight!
Shang Shiqian suddenly realized: Wait, why is Wei Yixian here?
Shouldn’t she be at the most upscale restaurant in the East City right now, having a candlelit dinner negotiation with her white moonlight?
Or was she planning to go later?
Seeing Shang Shiqian still lost in thought, Wei Yixian said, “If you don’t speak, I’ll take it as your agreement.”
Shang Shiqian snapped back to reality, looking troubled. “You’re not asking me to be a substitute for your late wife, are you? I have principles, I don’t do substitutions.”
Wei Yixian scoffed inwardly: You went as far as altering your face to look exactly like Shang Shiqian, yet claim you’re not a substitute? What an actress.
“You’re not a substitute,” Wei Yixian said, gazing at Shang Shiqian. “She doesn’t need one, and no one could ever replace her.”
The words were cryptic, but she never explained why she was taking Shang Shiqian back. And just like that, Shang Shiqian found herself bewilderedly arriving at Tianhao Garden.
When the driver opened the door for Wei Yixian, she gave him a pointed look. “You know the rules of working for me.”
The driver stiffened, suppressing his gossipy thoughts, and assured her, “Don’t worry, Ms. Wei. I won’t breathe a word about today.”
As Shang Shiqian stepped out of the car, she overheard their exchange and whispered to her system: [I really feel like WeiYixian and I live in different worlds. Doesn’t she cringe at her own lines?]
System: [She’s just committing the same sins all domineering CEOs do. Bear with it.]
Wei Yixian shot Shang Shiqian a sidelong glance: With that attitude, you think you can win me over? Dream on.
Noticing Shang Shiqian clinging to the car door, unmoving, she said, “No need to be nervous. Just consider this an invitation.”
Shang Shiqian grew even more uneasy: That line makes your motives even more suspicious!
The naive 21-year-old married ghost girl voiced her most sincere and simple doubt: [No matter how nice someone was before, do they all turn like this after becoming a CEO?]
Wei Yixian: “…Enough.”
The energy-saving system activated self-service mode, offering encouragement: [Host, this small step you’ve taken is a giant leap for the plot. Walk through this door, and you’ll be the ultimate winner. Go for it!]
With veins nearly popping from frustration at their conversation, Wei Yixian finally caught the information she wanted. A cold smile curled her lips: Hooked.
Indeed, she brought Shang Shiqian back not only to keep an eye on her but also to make Shang Shiqian and the system behind her believe their plan was proceeding smoothly.
The initiative was firmly in her hands, so she feared no schemes or tricks.
Through today’s interaction, she also discovered that she could only hear the conversations between “Shang Shiyu” and the system when she was close enough to “Shang Shiyu.”
In the hours between leaving the park and picking up “Shang Shiyu,” she hadn’t heard any unusual sounds.
However, it was also possible that during those hours, “Shang Shiyu” hadn’t engaged in any dialogue with the system.
Though she was convinced that both the system and “Shang Shiyu” were part of the opponent’s scheme, she still couldn’t figure out, what method had they used to make her hear their conversations?
On her first visit to Wei Yixian’s residence, Shang Shiqian curiously surveyed the layout.
It was a four-story villa, three above ground and one below. Outside, apart from a large courtyard, there was also a swimming pool and a tennis court. As for the rest, the dimming light made it hard for Shang Shiqian to notice much.
Shang Shiqian remarked, “So you like playing tennis.”
Wei Yixian responded with a nonchalant “Mhm.”
Her fondness for tennis wasn’t a secret, it had been mentioned in magazine interviews and even featured in her online profile.
Wei Yixian had expected Shang Shiqian to seize the opportunity to find common ground, perhaps claiming to also enjoy tennis or showing keen interest in the sport.
To her surprise, Shang Shiqian merely mentioned it in passing, showing no intention to continue the topic, and was immediately distracted by the aroma of food wafting from inside.
“It smells amazing! Wei Yixian, is someone cooking at your place?”
Unaware that she had inadvertently exposed herself, Shang Shiqian remained oblivious though Wei Yixian chose not to call her out. “Yes,” she replied.
Wei Yixian led Shang Shiqian into the living room and addressed one of the maids. “Prepare a fresh set of clothes for her and take her to bathe.”
Shang Shiqian froze, pressing herself against the wall behind her.
A bath right after entering the house?
Was this how the Wei family treated their guests? They really didn’t stand on ceremony.
Wei Yixian shot her a glance. The mere thought of Shang Shiqian having rummaged through trash that afternoon made it impossible for her to tolerate sitting down to a meal with someone who hadn’t bathed or changed clothes.
Though the maid was surprised that Wei Yixian had brought home an unfamiliar woman, her professionalism forbade any unnecessary expressions.
She smiled at Shang Shiqian. “The weather’s a bit warm. A nice soak before dinner will help whet your appetite.”
Convinced, Shang Shiqian cheerfully followed her upstairs to the guest room.
Inside, there were racks of brand-new clothes with tags still attached, formal wear for outings, casual loungewear, all in standard women’s sizes, with not a single men’s garment in sight.
Beyond clothes and disposable towels, even undergarments had been prepared.
Shang Shiqian couldn’t help but ask the maid, “Does your Ms. Wei… often have friends staying overnight here?”
The preparations were far too thorough!
Trained not to divulge her employer’s private affairs, the maid replied, “Maintaining this household to ensure our employer’s comfort is the most basic requirement of our job. Rest assured, we replace all the clothing, bedding, and toiletries here every month, these are all unworn, brand-new items.”
Shang Shiqian: “…”
Thorough, yes but also incredibly extravagant.
Such extravagant practices would never be permitted in the strictly disciplined Shang family.
But Shang Shiqian, fully aware of being a guest, refrained from commenting.
The maid not only prepared clothes and toiletries for her, but also wheeled in a cart laden with various wines, asking if she’d like to drink while bathing, or perhaps have some fruits and snacks.
Having only experienced such services in five-star hotels before, Shang Shiqian instinctively asked, “Should I leave a tip?”
The maid suppressed a laugh. “No need. These are all prepared by the kitchen for our guests.”
“Then I’ll have watermelon, peaches, and waxberries. No wine and a glass of cold boiled water, please.”
Third floor, walk-in closet.
Wei Yixian was about to change clothes when her private phone suddenly rang.
She unhurriedly removed her earrings and wristwatch, put on Bluetooth earbuds, and only then answered the call while changing.
A crisp, pleasant voice came through the earbuds: “Happy birthday, Wei!”
Wei Yixian paused mid-motion while changing.
Wei CEO: Allowing someone who’s picked through trash to ride in the same car with me is already the limit of my tolerance.
Shang Four: So young yet already reeking of CEO syndrome! Just you wait, I’ll get rid of that stench for you.
Wei CEO: …
