- Chapter 5 - Reunion
Could Wei Yixian have recognized me?
This thought flashed through Shang Shiqian’s mind, but she immediately dismissed it.
What normal person would jump to the conclusion that “someone who was cremated has come back to life”?!
It would be far more reasonable to suspect she was an illegitimate daughter of the Shang family after all, her alias had that exact vibe.
The Shang family followed generational naming traditions. For instance, the current family head, Shang Yufeng, belonged to the “Yu” generation, while her daughters, Shang Yunyu and Shang Yunpei, were of the “Yun” generation.
Starting from the next generation, different naming branches were adopted. For example, Shang Yunyu’s daughters followed the “Shi” branch, while Shang Yunpei’s daughters used the “Zhao” branch.
Shang Yunyu had three daughters: Eldest Miss Shang Shixing, Fourth Miss Shang Shiqian, and Fifth Miss Shang Shidai.
Second Miss Shang Zhaotang and Third Miss Shang Zhaoyan were Shang Yunpei’s children.
Given Shang Shiqian’s appearance and the alias she had chosen, it was highly likely she’d be mistaken for Shang Yunyu’s illegitimate daughter.
Shang Shiqian felt no guilt about inadvertently saddling her mother with such a scandal after all, she really was her mother’s child!
Shang Shiqian laughed it off. “Oh? What a coincidence. I bet your wife must be very beautiful.”
A flicker of disgust passed through Wei Yixian’s eyes: Was she fishing for compliments? Did she even have the right to praise herself while wearing someone else’s face?!
The more she thought about it, the angrier she became, itching to grab that pale neck and demand: How dare you use this face?!
Shang Shiqian shivered under Wei Yixian’s glare: That look in her ex-wife’s eyes… No wonder she had emerged victorious from the ruthless battle for the Wei family’s succession. She looked downright murderous.
This version of Wei Yixian was unfamiliar to her, but having read the novel’s synopsis, Shang Shiqian quickly adjusted to her new characterization.
After all, aside from her one true love the “white moonlight”, no one could expect gentleness from Wei Yixian.
Speaking of the novel, should she take this chance to read it?
She wasn’t sure how far the plot had progressed.
With that in mind, Shang Shiqian unabashedly opened the digital version of the original novel provided by the system.
“?”
Wei Yixian was taken aback when Shang Shiqian ignored her and zoned out.
Wei Yixian: Does this woman actually think I’d say something like, “Well, well, you’ve caught my attention”?
Just as she was about to speak, the conversation between Shang Shiqian and the system replayed in her mind:
Shang Shiqian: [Hey, little system, what’s the date today?]
System: [May 21, 2024.]
Shang Shiqian: [Late May already? So, the female lead is about to reunite with the white moonlight?]
System: [Correct. The white moonlight has returned to the country and has accepted the Zhou family’s request to help them out of the predicament caused by the female lead’s siege. Sparks will fly as they clash on equal footing.]
Wei Yixian narrowed her eyes: Related to the Zhou family? Could they be behind this?
As for who the “white moonlight” was, she guessed it was probably her first love, Yin Zaishui.
Though she didn’t consider Yin Zaishui her “white moonlight,” she was well aware that this was how high society in the Eastern District had defined their relationship all these years. She was used to it by now.
If the mastermind was so fixated on her love life, she might as well see whether Yin Zaishui was involved too.
However, Shang Shiqian’s thoughts were rather erratic. One moment she was reading a novel, the next her attention had shifted: [I feel like today is some special date…]
System: [Correct, today is a very important day!]
She suddenly became excited: [Ah, I know! It’s the opening ceremony of the ‘Wei Da Cup’ Weiqi League Championship!]
The system froze for half a second.
System reminder: [Today is the female lead’s birthday!!!]
Shang Shiqian froze for a moment.
Shang Shiqian exclaimed in surprise: [What? Wei Yixian actually chose such a great day for her birthday? No wonder I always felt she never celebrated it.]
So it turned out that whenever Wei Yixian’s birthday came around, she was always away at competitions.
Thinking this, Shang Shiqian felt slightly guilty. After all, although she and Wei Yixian were only nominally married, it was rather inexcusable not to even remember the other’s birthday.
Hearing Shang Shiqian mention the “Weiqi League Championship,” Wei Yixian’s heart sank. Could this impersonator of Shang Shiqian have even grasped her love and attention for weiqi so accurately?
That remark about “Wei Yixian actually choosing such a great day for her birthday” gave Wei Yixian rather mixed feelings.
She wanted to criticize “Shang Shiqian” for not doing her homework properly, because everyone knew the “Wei Da Cup” was the weiqi tournament sponsored by their Wei family!
When the Weiqi Association was preparing the league championship and approached the Wei family for sponsorship, Wei Yixian had just been born a few days prior. Overjoyed, the Wei family patriarch sponsored a large sum. In return, the Weiqi Association named the tournament the “Wei Da Cup” and scheduled its opening day on her birthday.
However, this was merely the Wei family’s public relations spin for reputation and prestige.
In truth, the Wei patriarch had many descendants, he wouldn’t spend so much money just because a granddaughter was born.
The patriarch did this to get closer to the Shang family, Shang Yufeng’s son-in-law Lin Shizhang was a national weiqi champion and honorary president of the Weiqi Association. He could have easily had the Shang family sponsor the tournament, but refrained to avoid appearing monopolistic.
Thus, this left room for other sponsors.
Typically, sponsors changed each year along with the tournament’s name.
But the Wei patriarch persistently sponsored for over twenty years. After Shang Shiqian and Wei Yixian married, Wei Yixian’s father continued this tradition upon securing his position as heir.
This year, however, after Wei Yixian edged out her siblings to become Wei Corporation’s CEO, the Weiqi Association explicitly rejected her sponsorship, stating this year’s naming rights were already secured.
Wei Yixian scrutinized Shang Shiqian: Could she be unaware this year’s tournament was renamed the “Hua Shang Cup” with a different opening date?
Even while lost in thought, Shang Shiqian could feel an intense gaze boring into her, as if trying to drill holes through her.
She glanced at Wei Yixian and noticed her expression wasn’t as sour as before, but rather as if confronting some monumental dilemma, her brows furrowed deeply.
Shang Shiqian tapped the system again: [Hey little system, why isn’t she saying anything? She’s acting so strange!]
System: […]
It replied: [No signs of affection or heartache detected.]
If not for the system’s reminder, Shang Shiqian would have almost forgotten that its energy source came from the “affection points” and “heartbreak points” contributed by Wei Yixian.
Shang Shiqian scoffed internally: It’s normal that there are no points.
This was practically her first encounter with Wei Yixian, they hadn’t even exchanged ten sentences. How could any normal person develop affection from that?
As for heartbreak points, Wei Yixian hadn’t even begun her anguished love story with her white moonlight yet, so that was even more absurd.
Wei Yixian, now armed with new information, arched a brow.
Was the other party expecting her to fall for this fake Shang Shiqian?
And what exactly did “heartbreak index” refer to?
She would have liked to read the novel the system mentioned, but judging from earlier, it seemed only “Shang Shiqian” could see it.
–
Time flew by as the two engaged in a silent standoff, intentional or not.
The car sent to pick up Wei Yixian had already parked by the park, but the driver didn’t dare approach to hurry her.
It wasn’t until a phone rang that the silence was finally broken.
Wei Yixian cast a meaningful glance at Shang Shiqian before stepping aside to answer the call.
Shang Shiqian thought for a moment and decided to make a run for it.
Let the damn mission be handled by the devil himself!
Out of the corner of her eye, Wei Yixian noticed Shang Shiqian sneaking away.
She didn’t give chase, merely signaling to someone in the distance before returning to her car.
Since this fake Shang Shiqian’s target was her, she wasn’t worried about the other slipping out of her sight.
Still, she disliked losing control so she had her hidden bodyguards tail the imposter to see who she might contact.
The new driver asked, “President Wei, are we heading back to Tianhao Jingyuan?”
Her midday plans already disrupted, Wei Yixian removed her glasses and rubbed her temples. “Back to the office.”
Wei Yixian’s unexpected early arrival at the corporate tower sent employees lounging in the lobby with coffee into a frenzy, all scrambling for the staff elevators in a desperate bid to return to their desks before she noticed.
Once her figure disappeared into the private elevator, whispers broke out among them:
“Wasn’t today President Wei’s birthday? The Wei family even arranged an afternoon tea party for her, why is she back at the office?”
“Those Wei relatives are just using the birthday as an excuse to ask for favors. No way she’d actually attend!”
“So she’s not celebrating at all?”
Meanwhile, Wei Yixian rode the elevator straight to the top floor.
Her secretary, already waiting, hurried forward with updates the moment she stepped out.
Wei Yixian’s gaze flickered to the flowers on the office coffee table before she ordered indifferently, “Throw them out.”
The secretary hesitated. “President Wei, these flowers are—”
“I said, throw them out.”
A chill ran down the secretary’s spine. Not daring to argue further, she swiftly bagged the extravagant bouquet worth tens of thousands and tossed it.
Wei Yixian then commanded, “Summon Xie Yu.”
Minutes later, the chief assistant knocked and entered.
Without preamble, Wei Yixian instructed, “Have people monitor the Wei and Zhou families. I want their recent financial flows and social activities tracked.”
Xie Yu noted it down on her tablet.
“And Yin Zaishui.”
Xie Yu’s hand paused briefly, but she offered no comment.
“As for the Shang family…” Wei Yixian hesitated. “Never mind them. But there’s one person dig into her background for me.”
Xie Yu asked, “Who?”
Wei Yixian wrote a name on paper, Shang Shiyu.
“Just the name? I mean, do you have a photo or ID number? With that information, the search would be more thorough.”
Wei Yixian expressionlessly searched online and sent her a photo.
Xie Yu: ?
What’s the meaning of sending me a photo of your deceased wife?
Shang Si: Seems I forgot to wish her a happy birthday… Oh well, we’re not that close anyway.
CEO Wei: …
