- Chapter 4 - The Ex-Wife
After Shang Shiqian pondered how to approach Wei Yixian without success, she decisively shifted her focus.
If she was destined to fail the system’s mission and could not fulfill her wishes, then she could only use the remaining month of her life to visit her family.
Although she had seen her family just two days ago at their wedding anniversary celebration, to the Shang family, she had been dead for eight years.
She could not imagine how heartbroken they must have been when they first learned of her death.
She also wanted to know if they had lived peacefully and happily over these past eight years.
Of course, to spare her family from experiencing the pain of losing her again, she did not plan to appear before them; she would simply watch them from a distance, quietly.
Having made up her mind, Shang Shiqian stood up to leave. Just as she turned around, she saw a figure standing beneath the tree.
With long, jet-black hair parted to one side, the thicker side cascaded down her shoulder, obscuring her right ear and part of her cheek, while the thinner side was tucked behind her ear, revealing her earlobe adorned with platinum gemstone earrings.
A pair of pure titanium silver-framed glasses perched on her nose, behind which were a pair of rather gloomy and cold eyes.
She wore a silk satin blouse, paired with fitted ankle-length trousers, and on her feet were low-heeled leather shoes.
The other person appeared silently, standing there quietly, exuding a gloomy and ominous aura.
In such a shadowy manner, it was no wonder Shang Shiqian initially thought she was hanging from the tree.
Startled, Shang Shiqian stumbled back, her shock comparable to when she saw her own photo on a tombstone late at night.
Unbeknownst to her, at the moment Shang Shiqian turned around and Wei Yixian clearly saw her face, the inner turmoil was akin to experiencing an earthquake.
That morning, Wei Yixian had seen this face on Shang Shiqian’s tombstone photograph, 21 years old, pristine and flawless, brimming with collagen.
And that clear gaze, tinged with a hint of foolishness, was identical to the one in the photo.
Even the clothes she wore were the casual outfit Shang Shiqian had changed into after taking off her formal dress at the wedding anniversary celebration.
Shang Shiqian?
Impossible!
As Wei Yixian regained her composure, a heavy feeling settled in her heart.
The girl who resembled Shang Shiqian and that strange voice were both steeped in calculation and eeriness; there had to be some conspiracy at play.
The other party had gone to great lengths to approach her, even going so far as to undergo plastic surgery to look like Shang Shiqian, clearly with significant ulterior motives.
Wei Yixian suppressed the question that almost slipped from her lips, her gaze dark and brooding as she stared at Shang Shiqian.
In a moment of distraction, Shang Shiqian recovered from her fright.
Curiously, she gazed at the suddenly appearing woman, feeling as though she had seen this face somewhere before.
She poked the system: “Little Black, don’t you think this woman looks a bit like Wei Yixian?”
Wei Yixian: ?
Oh, so she’s putting on an act in front of me?
Only Shang Shiqian knew that she truly did not recognize Wei Yixian, for the woman before her was beautiful and mature, her aura far more gloomy and cold than the Wei Yixian she remembered.
The Wei Yixian she knew, while possessing a cool and beautiful appearance, had always been gentle and warm in their past interactions, she had even “thoughtfully” asked if she wanted a ride just “two days ago” before she left. She was certainly not the sinister figure standing before her now.
The Black Moonlight system popped up an emoticon notification: 【!!Σ≡≡≡((っ`·A·)っ嗷~~ Host, this is the female lead, Wei Yixian.】
Shang Shiqian: You’re blinding me.
She asked happily, “Do you have energy now?”
The system hesitated, as if running low on power, then faltered: 【I just received a sudden influx of energy, but it’s not much. I won’t last long before I have to enter energy-saving mode again. Host, you need to complete the mission well; only by winning over the female lead can I gain more energy to accompany you.】
Shang Shiqian: I don’t really need your company that much.
【Oh right, to avoid me being offline and unable to assist you in time, I’ve sent you the original novel. Once you familiarize yourself with all the plot points, you’ll know how to complete the mission!】
After the system finished explaining, it quickly switched to energy-saving mode.
Shang Shiqian: …
She belatedly realized: “What!!! This person really is Wei Yixian?!”
Her wife no, her ex-wife, how did she end up like this?
What had Wei Yixian experienced over these eight years?
Was the battle for the Wei family’s inheritance so fierce and brutal that it turned a gentle and warm girl into someone who looked like she was owed ten billion?
Noticing that Shang Shiqian’s mouth had not moved, yet she could hear her talking to the “system,” Wei Yixian felt as if her brain had been stuffed with a massive amount of information.
What female lead, system, strategy, mission, original plot…
What were they talking about?
If she was the female lead, then wasn’t the system asking “Shang Shiqian” to win her over?
Even though she already knew “Shang Shiqian” was coming for her, Wei Yixian still felt a sense of being toyed with.
Suppressing her rising anger, she calmly asked, “Who are you?”
After so many years, she had long learned to hide her true emotions, but those who knew her well could still perceive her genuine feelings through her eyes.
Unfortunately, Shang Shiqian was not familiar with her.
Being questioned about her identity felt like a rollercoaster for Shang Shiqian; one moment she was worried that Wei Yixian might recognize her, and the next she was startled by the ghostly figure before her; then she felt relieved:
At least she didn’t recognize me.
No wonder; we weren’t close to begin with, and I’ve been dead for eight years, how could she possibly remember me!
Between revealing her true identity and concocting a false one to deceive, Shang Shiqian chose the latter.
“I am Shang Shiyu, Shang as in Shang Yang, and Shiyu as in time not waiting.”
Although she intended to cooperate with Wei Yixian, she had not considered doing so under her true identity.
After all, explaining why she had died and come back to life would inevitably involve mentioning the existence of the system, which would surely raise the system’s suspicions.
Moreover, the identity of Shang Shiqian as Wei Yixian’s ex-wife felt awkward, whether she was trying to bring Wei Yixian together with her true love or create obstacles for them.
Hearing an unexpected answer, Wei Yixian pursed her lips, thinking that this liar was still capable of restraint.
If the other party had truly used the identity of “Shang Shiqian,” she would have immediately turned her over to the police to investigate this group.
Of course, even if she had dismissed that thought for now, the origins of this person still needed to be investigated, but it couldn’t be done overtly to avoid alarming the snake in the grass.
To draw the snake out of its hole, Wei Yixian needed to extract more information.
She asked, “What is your relationship with the Shang family?”
Shang Shiqian feigned ignorance: “Shang family? Which Shang family?”
Wei Yixian scoffed inwardly: “Hah, poor acting.”
In this East City, who didn’t know about the thousand-year-old Shang family?
The earliest ancestors of the Shang family could be traced back to Shang Yang during the pre-Qin period.
After Shang Yang was killed, his descendants took Shang as their surname, and this clan developed into a prominent family during the Han Dynasty, branching out into several major lineages.
This branch in East City had migrated from Runan during the period of turmoil.
Having stood firm for a thousand years, the Shang family had produced many esteemed figures in modern times, earning the title of “thousand-year-old family.”
Of course, this title was somewhat inflated and could not be compared to the families of the Han and Wei-Jin periods, but it symbolized fame and status in East City.
Even the top-tier Wei family could not match the Shang family’s depth.
Shang Shiqian seemed to realize that her answer had holes, so she quickly thought of a way to cover herself: “I’m from the mountains, not very familiar with things in your city.”
Wei Yixian: …
She curled her lips into a cold smile: “Oh? Where are you from?”
Shang Shiqian sincerely replied, “May I ask what this has to do with you?”
How strange; Wei Yixian was actually so concerned about a stranger.
Shang Shiqian sighed inwardly, eight years ago she didn’t understand Wei Yixian, and eight years later she understood her even less!
As the saying goes, “Sincerity is always the ultimate weapon,” but Wei Yixian’s probing thoughts were not subdued by this “attack.”
She said, “Because you look a lot like someone, I know…”
Then she paused, her cold smile taking on a hint of mischief: “My wife.”
Shang Shiqian’s heart tightened: She couldn’t have recognized me, could she?
Shang Si: Although, my ex-wife should be gentle and warm.
Bystanders: Why is your filter so thick?
