The Cannon Fodder Ex-Wife Changes to Take the Black Moonlight Script - Chapter 35.2
Wei Yixian took a couple of steps toward the exit before turning back to take her hand. “Come on, let’s go home.”
Shang Shiqian looked up, seeing only Wei Yixian’s profile.
The hand holding hers didn’t feel as cold as before.
Xie Mei and Yin Lian trailed behind, their eyes wide with shock and curiosity, as if they’d stumbled upon some juicy new gossip.
At the parking lot, Wei Yixian promptly herded them into the company car.
Yin Lian grabbed Xie Mei’s shoulder. “Assistant Xie, am I seeing things? Did Wei Yixian just.”
Though Xie Mei couldn’t make sense of Wei Yixian’s actions either, she replied sternly, “If you don’t want to end up like the previous secretaries, keep your curiosity to yourself.”
Inside the car, Shang Shiqian removed her mask.
Now in an enclosed space, her reservations eased slightly. “Wei Yixian, can I ask you something?”
Wei Yixian replied flatly, “If I said no, would you drop it?”
“You and the eldest Shang, Miss Shang weren’t you family? Why does it seem like you don’t get along?”
Wei Yixian: “…”
Old Liu, the driver, sucked in a sharp breath: Seriously, you’re really asking that?!
Catching Wei Yixian’s glare in the rearview mirror, he stammered, “Boss Wei, I’ll step out and check something.”
Though he claimed to be inspecting the car, he ended up lingering nearby.
Wei Yixian leaned back against the seat, crossing his right leg over his left and folding his arms. “Hmm.”
“Not well.”
Before Shang Shiqian could ask why, he continued, “After Shang Shiqian’s death, we were no longer family.”
Shang Shiqian’s heart clenched, her breath hitching.
“Why?”
“Why do you think? What else could it be?”
For a moment, Shang Shiqian was pinned down by Wei Yixian’s sinister and ruthless gaze.
But soon, Wei Yixian turned his face away, his eyes dark and unreadable. “You care so much about the Shang family? Then why did you hide when Shang Shixing came looking for me?”
Wei Yixian’s preemptive strike left Shang Shiqian with no time to ponder why he had blocked Shang Shixing.
However, Shang Shiqian quickly found a response. “You said I resemble your late wife and didn’t want my face to cause you any trouble. Wouldn’t it be worse if her family saw me?”
Wei Yixian stared at her for a long moment before letting out a derisive chuckle.
Her lies used to be full of holes, but now her ability to cover them up was getting better and better. The persistent overcast weather in Dongcheng, where temperatures had once soared to 32°C, finally pressed the cooling button.
The pleasant weather improved the mood of the college students participating in the Go tournament as they received guidance from Shang Shiqian.
When the bell for the eighth class rang, Shang Shiqian stepped out of the Go Room.
At the milk tea shop near the east gate.
Chu Fei, disguised as a delivery person, glanced at her digital watch when she saw Shang Shiqian emerge.
It was only a little past three in the afternoon earlier than Shang Shiqian’s usual departure time.
Why was she leaving now?
Just as Chu Fei wondered if Shang Shiqian was heading out for shopping again, she noticed a battered Forestry Bureau pickup truck parked by the roadside.
By the time the truck drove off, Chu Fei was shocked to find Shang Shiqian had vanished!
She immediately rushed out, scanning the area but finding no trace of Shang Shiqian. Realizing Shang Shiqian must have been taken away in that truck, she jumped into her car to give chase.
Despite its shabby appearance, the pickup’s driver was alarmingly skilled. Within half a minute, the vehicle had disappeared into the streets.
While driving, Chu Fei reported the incident to Pu Feifei.
Pu Feifei said, “Keep looking. I’ll see if I can reach her.”
–
Inside the pickup truck.
Shang Shiqian answered her phone. “Sister Pu?”
Hearing her voice, Pu Feifei sighed in relief but cautiously asked, “Xiao Shang, aren’t you playing Go? How come you picked up so quickly?”
“I’m taking a break.”
Noticing Shang Shiqian wasn’t being truthful, Pu Feifei’s anxiety spiked again.
But she couldn’t outright ask, there was no way to explain how she knew.
Thinking fast, she chuckled and said, “Boss Wei asked me to add two claw machines. Can you help me decide what kind to buy?”
Shang Shiqian sounded surprised. “Wei Yixian likes playing claw machines?”
Pu Feifei: “…”
He didn’t before. Now he does.
Whether he will in the future remains to be seen.
Amused by this new discovery, Shang Shiqian replied, “Sister Pu, I have something to take care of. Let’s talk more tonight.”
“Alright.”
After hanging up, Pu Feifei received another update from Chu Fei, she’d lost the pickup. With no choice, Pu Feifei hurriedly reported the situation to Wei Yixian.
After shaking off the suspicious car, Xiao Luomeng asked, “Where to?”
Shang Shiqian thought for a moment. “The park where you dropped me off last time.”
“Huayang Park.”
“Right.”
Half an hour later, Shang Shiqian returned to the park that held such vivid memories for her.
The central clock tower chimed the hour, startling the pigeons in the square into flight.
Shang Shiqian went to the park’s newsstand to buy some bread, tore it into pieces, and fed the pigeons.
“Back then, I ate yours now I’m returning the favor!”
Xiao Luomeng, hands in her pockets, asked, “What do you mean by that?”
Shang Shiqian then told her about the time she was starving and ended up snatching bread from the pigeons.
Xiao Luomeng: “…”
She was starting to believe that “Shang Shiyu” wasn’t some carefully cultivated pawn by Wei Yixian.
What kind of pawn would stoop so low as to fight pigeons for food?
She asked, “You said your name is real, what about this face of yours? Is it real?”
Shang Shiqian replied, “Of course. If you don’t believe me, give it a pinch.”
Xiao Luomeng actually reached out and pinched her face, from her forehead down to her nose bridge, then her cheeks and chin.
“No signs of surgical alterations.”
And it was surprisingly soft and smooth.
Shang Shiqian tilted her head back.
Xiao Luomeng snapped out of it and awkwardly withdrew her hand.
Close call she almost went from bone-checking to outright groping!
Xiao Luomeng sat down beside her. “Then how come you look exactly like Shang Shiqian? Are you twins? But even if you were, you couldn’t have stayed completely unchanged for the past eight years, right?”
Instead of answering, Shang Shiqian countered, “How did you know Shang Shiqian?”
Xiao Luomeng smirked. “She was a Go player. Is it weird that I knew her?”
“But you don’t seem like someone who follows the Go scene.”
“Why wouldn’t I be?”
Shang Shiqian said, “Your office doesn’t have anything Go-related.”
Xiao Luomeng: “…”
With observational skills like that, it’s a waste she isn’t a detective.
She argued, “The duty room isn’t mine alone. Besides, do I have to be interested in Go to follow the Go scene? I’m not into soccer, but that doesn’t stop me from watching the World Cup!”
Shang Shiqian said, “People watch the World Cup for sports betting, but Go doesn’t have that.”
“Hey, you!” Xiao Luomeng instantly flared up. “Back when I questioned you, you were tight-lipped as a clam. Now you’re suddenly all sharp-tongued.”
Shang Shiqian glanced at her and held out the bread in her hand. “Want some?”
Xiao Luomeng let out an exasperated laugh, snatched the bread, and took a bite.
Then, crossing her legs, she said, “You know that impersonation and identity theft are crimes punishable by jail time, right? In serious cases, you could be locked up for years.”
“But I haven’t impersonated anyone.”
“Better not, and I suggest you never try.” Xiao Luomeng hinted pointedly, “Especially not someone with deep family connections. Their identities aren’t so easily stolen. Anyway, don’t risk your neck for petty gains.”
Shang Shiqian nodded earnestly. “Got it. Thanks for the warning.”
Xiao Luomeng was highly suspicious of whether she’d actually understood.
But considering how sharp she was, she probably had.
Shang Shiqian asked, “Were you also a police officer in the Public Security Brigade before?”
“Yeah. Weren’t you curious about how I knew Shang Shiqian?” Xiao Luomeng watched her reaction.
After a moment of thought, Shang Shiqian asked, “Because you were involved in investigating her murder case eight years ago?”
Xiao Luomeng: “Hey, have you been looking into me?”
“Just a guess.”
Xiao Luomeng mulled it over. Back then, she had only been a trainee officer, assisting with basic fieldwork. Even if “Shang Shiyu” had investigated her through Wei Yixian, there was no way she could’ve found out.
This showed that the girl before him was indeed quick-witted.
Shang Shiqian asked, “Can you tell me about that case?”
“You can look it up online.”
“Things online can be true or false. What I want to understand isn’t the story, but the facts.”
Xiao Luomeng said, “I won’t say anything I can’t disclose.”
The implication was that she was willing to share whatever she could.
“Then can you tell me about Chen Baoming?”
Just as Shang Shiqian returned to the East Gate of East City University, she spotted Wei Yixian’s luxury car parked by the roadside.
Wei Yixian stepped out of the car.
Her dark gaze fixed intently on Shang Shiqian.
Shang Shiqian walked up to her. “Wei Yixian, are you here to pick me up today?”
As if remembering something, she patted her pockets. “Ah, I lost my mask.”
“Where did you go?” Wei Yixian asked.
“Huayang Park.”
Wei Yixian frowned.
She hadn’t forgotten that was where she had reunited with Shang Shiqian.
Before Wei Yixian could question further, Shang Shiqian explained, “Back then, when I came out of the mountains, I lost my luggage along the way and had no money… But luckily, I met a kind person who took me to Huayang Park. I ran into her again a couple of days ago, so we decided to meet up and take a walk in the park.”
Wei Yixian narrowed her eyes.
In truth, within half an hour of Shang Shiqian being taken away, she had already looked into Xiao Luomeng.
But she hadn’t done anything instead, she came here.
She was certain Shang Shiqian would return.
And sure enough…
Right now, Wei Yixian didn’t feel like interrogating her. “Let’s go home.”
Shang Shiqian guiltily climbed into the car.
Whether it was because the air conditioning wasn’t on or not, Shang Shiqian felt the atmosphere inside the car was unusually tense.
Wei Yixian spoke softly, “Come closer.”
Shang Shiqian blinked. “Huh?”
But she still shifted slightly toward Wei Yixian.
Suddenly, Wei Yixian raised her hand to Shang Shiqian’s face, her thumb lightly brushing the corner of Shang Shiqian’s lips.
The moment she withdrew her hand, she brought it to her own lips.
After licking them, she remarked, “Five-yuan rock-grilled cheese toast from the newsstand. Feeding the pigeons… and yourself?”
Shang Shiqian’s mind buzzed, her heartbeat pounding so loudly it seemed to pierce her eardrums.
A rush of heat surged to her head, her face turning as red as a boiled shrimp.
Wei Yixian, however, didn’t seem to think there was anything wrong with her action.
She leisurely pulled out a wet wipe, cleaned her hands, and handed one to Shang Shiqian.
Shang Shiqian numbly took the wipe, screaming internally at her system:
[Little Black System! Did Wei Yixian just harass me?
I never expected her to be this kind of woman.
She has a white moonlight, how could she do this to me?]
Wei Yixian: “…”
Her molars were already grinding audibly.
The Black Moonlight System was even more excited than Shang Shiqian: [Awooo~~ Flirting! That was definitely flirting! She’s so in love!]
Shang Shiqian instantly cooled down: [You’re so cringe, you cringe system.]
The system fired back: [You spruce-wood Go stone jar! You should’ve just taken the chance to pounce and kiss her! I wasted all those tutorials on you!]
Shang Shiqian retorted: [Your tutorials never mentioned Wei Yixian would do something like this.]
System: […]
Wouldn’t that require omniscient knowledge?
Whatever, at least reading the tutorials shows progress.
Wei Yixian turned to stare at Shang Shiqian.
Hah. Acting all dismissive of the tutorials.
Yet secretly studying behind her back?
Shang Shiqian: Wasn’t that just casual reading to relax my mind?
Wei Yixian: Hah. Casual reading gave you such extensive theoretical knowledge?
