- Chapter 35.1 - Flirting
“I finally found you here! When I came to my senses and realized you were gone, I thought you’d been swept away by the crowd!”
Yin Lian spotted Shang Shiqian and secretly breathed a sigh of relief.
CEO Wei had instructed her to keep an eye on the “intern” and not lose track of her.
She had wondered, how could someone so grown possibly get lost?
Yet the moment she looked down to handle some work, the intern had vanished.
Fortunately, the “intern” was tall enough to spot easily in a crowd.
Shang Shiqian smiled. “There aren’t many people here, Sister Yin. No need to worry.”
“It only seems that way because it’s still early. By nine o’clock, this place will be packed,” Yin Lian said. “By the way, our group has an exhibition booth too. Let me take you there.”
Having already seen that her family was safe and sound, Shang Shiqian was content. There was no need to keep standing in the audience section staring at the Shang Corporation’s display.
So she nodded in agreement. “Alright.”
The opening ceremony concluded at ten.
Wei Yixian arrived at the subsidiary company’s exhibition booth and found Shang Shiqian sitting on a small folding stool in the backstage area, playing with her phone.
A nearby employee quickly nudged the tip of Shang Shiqian’s shoe with their foot. “Intern, CEO Wei is here! Stop playing around!”
Shang Shiqian blinked in confusion, put away her phone, and stood up. She lined up with the others and dutifully called out, “CEO Wei.”
Wei Yixian: “…”
Having grown accustomed to Shang Shiqian always addressing her by her full name, this sudden switch to “CEO Wei” made her feel as if ants were crawling all over her body uncomfortable in every way possible.
Wei Yixian didn’t show any special treatment toward her.
First, she expressed her regards to the employees, then instructed the subsidiary’s executives to ensure smooth supply-demand coordination during the exhibition.
Just before leaving the venue, Wei Yixian suddenly recalled the system’s logic for increasing Love Points.
Although she didn’t know exactly how crucial energy was to both the system and Shang Shiqian, she didn’t mind boosting the Love Points a little to replenish their energy.
So, abandoning her earlier indifferent attitude, she walked up to Shang Shiqian and asked:
“Why haven’t you gone to explore the exhibition? Didn’t you say you’d never seen one before and really wanted to come?”
Shang Shiqian had assumed Wei Yixian would continue ignoring her until they returned.
She replied, “I haven’t had the chance yet.”
“Then let’s go. I’ll take you around.”
As soon as Wei Yixian finished speaking, Yin Lian couldn’t help but open her mouth to speak only to be quietly “warned” by Xie Mei: “Don’t say anything.”
“But CEO Wei has a meeting next,” Yin Lian protested.
Though Xie Mei wasn’t in charge of scheduling, she was still familiar with Wei Yixian’s itinerary.
She said, “That meeting isn’t important. Let the vice president handle it.”
After Wei Yixian left with Shang Shiqian.
The subsidiary’s executives and participating employees exchanged bewildered glances.
Wasn’t she just an intern and one that CEO Wei disliked at that?
“Who told you that? She’s a VIP connection, understand?”
“Yikes, I just kicked her earlier.”
“And I made her pour tea and fetch water!”
Shang Shiqian remained oblivious to how this little episode had unsettled others.
Even if she had known, she would have simply advised them not to overthink it.
After all, she hadn’t paid any attention to those trivial matters.
Shang Shiqian knew nothing about the field covered by this exhibition, so she merely skimmed through the displays with superficial interest.
Occasionally, she’d let out an “Wow” to feign amazement at the ever-evolving technology.
Yin Lian & Xie Mei: “…”
You’re saying “Wow,” but your feet never pause for even a second. Could your “Wow” be any more half-hearted?
While others at the exhibition would at least stop to admire, gather around, and take photos of the models, you’re literally just walking through without a second glance.
Wei Yixian knew Shang Shiqian’s mind wasn’t on the exhibition at all.
She led Shang Shiqian straight to Hall 3, where the Phoenix Group had set up their display.
From a distance, Shang Shiqian spotted the “Phoenix” logo at the Shang family’s booth.
She walked over eagerly, only to be disappointed, there wasn’t a single Shang family member in sight.
Well, that made sense. Exhibitions had designated personnel.
Corporate executives usually just dropped by for a quick inspection and left they wouldn’t stick around to entertain buyers.
CEOs like Wei Yixian, who had the free time to stroll through exhibitions, were few and far between.
Wei Yixian couldn’t quite make out Shang Shiqian’s expression, but she seemed like a wilted little cabbage, utterly deflated.
Wei Yixian said, “Let’s not wander anymore. This is a waste of time. There’s a booth over there with VR and AR tech for real-time exhibition viewing. We’ll check that out, then head back.”
Shang Shiqian nodded.
–
Hall 3, Zone B.
Shang Conglan had just stepped away from one booth and was about to explore another when she spotted Wei Yixian passing by the neighboring display.
Wei Yixian was accompanied by three women, but what struck Shang Conglan as odd was this while Wei Yixian’s assistant and secretary trailed behind, the girl wearing a face mask walked side by side with her.
Who was this girl?
Remembering the recent news about Wei Yixian’s secret yacht rendezvous with her first love, Shang Conglan pulled out her phone, snapped a photo, and sent it to Shang Shidai.
“Shidai-jie, is this Wei Yixian’s first love?”
When Wei Yixian married into the Shang family, Shang Conglan had only been nine, she had no memory of Wei Yixian’s past romance.
On the other end of the WeChat message, Shang Shidai, who had spent the entire night exhausting her creative energy in front of a canvas (in other words, pulling an all-nighter) and had just woken up glanced at her phone.
She replied lazily, “You can tell just by the outfit, it’s not her. This girl looks like she just graduated and hasn’t figured out office attire yet.”
Then, like a spark igniting in her mind.
A college student…
Wasn’t Wei Yixian’s Caged Canary a college student?!
Shang Shidai quickly forwarded the photo to the wealthy second-generation friend who had once stumbled upon Wei Yixian’s secret of picking up her Caged Canary.
“Is this the girl Wei Yixian was driving around that day?”
The friend replied with absolute certainty, “Yes!”
“She’s wearing a mask you’re sure it’s her?”
“I wouldn’t recognize her without the mask. Even though she had a hat on that day, the build and hair length, I’m positive it’s the same college girl! But wow, her fashion sense took a nosedive. What’s with the outfit?”
“Never mind the outfit.”
The friend then sent Shang Shidai a series of chat logs:
“These are from May 26th, the evening after you exposed Wei Yixian’s Caged Canary at the banquet. Check out this RR 110th Anniversary Special Edition luxury car, isn’t it Wei Yixian’s? And the person she picked up so conspicuously, doesn’t the figure match the girl in your photo?”
After comparing, Shang Shidai immediately tossed family decorum aside and cursed.
First, the yacht tryst with her first love.
Now, she had the audacity to bring her Caged Canary to an aerospace exhibition where members of the Shang family were present?
This was nothing short of a direct provocation!
Shang Shidai wished she could teleport to the airshow immediately to catch them red-handed.
But she also knew Wei Yixian wouldn’t stay at the airshow for long. By the time she arrived, the woman would already be gone.
So she first contacted Shang Conglan to confirm Wei Yixian’s location, then called Shang Shixing: “Eldest sister, are you still at the airshow?”
Shang Shixing stepped away from the crowd to a corner of the exhibition hall.
“About to leave. What’s up?”
Shang Shidai exclaimed excitedly: “Wei Yixian brought the Caged Canary to the airshow. Eldest sister, you can’t ignore this!”
Shang Shixing froze.
Wei Yixian brought the Caged Canary to the airshow?
What kind of tabloid news was this?
Shang Shixing rubbed her temples: “What Caged Canary? All I saw were employees from her company.”
“That was definitely not a company employee. Someone recognized her, she’s the Caged Canary Wei keeps at Tianhao Garden! Xiao Lan says they’re currently at the ‘Cloud Live’ booth in Zone B of Hall 3.”
They were in Zone B? Shang Shixing instinctively turned to look toward Zone B.
But with several company booths in between, she couldn’t see anything.
Shang Shixing said, “Even if it’s true, what does it have to do with us?”
“Don’t you think she’s provoking us?”
Everyone knew their mother’s status in the Aeronautical Society and that the Shang family always participated in this society-sponsored exhibition.
For Wei Yixian to debut at this airshow with the Caged Canary in tow wasn’t she telling the Shang family that Shang Shiqian was now history and she had moved on to someone new?
Shang Shixing countered, “Even if she is, what can you do about it?”
Shang Shidai choked on her words.
Shang Shixing continued, “This isn’t some East City elite cocktail party or private gathering. There are over 730 domestic and international companies here. If we deliberately pick a fight and embarrass her, it’s the Shang family that’ll end up losing face internationally.”
After reprimanding her excitable younger sister, Shang Shixing stood still for a moment.
Soon after, she headed toward the “Cloud Live” booth.
Not to pick a fight, just to confirm.
Shang Shixing’s timing was good. When she arrived at the “Cloud Live” booth, Wei Yixian was just about to leave.
She heard Wei Yixian ask the girl beside her, “Satisfied now?”
The girl replied, “Mm.”
Only then did Shang Shixing realize this girl looked familiar.
That brief glimpse during the opening ceremony’s audience seating had given her a strangely familiar feeling.
She called out, “Wei Yixian.”
Wei Yixian paused mid-step and turned around.
What struck Shang Shixing as odd was that the girl didn’t turn she remained with her back to Shang Shixing.
“Something you need?” Wei Yixian took two steps forward, deliberately blocking Shang Shixing’s line of sight.
Shang Shixing fell silent for two seconds.
Coming here to confront Wei Yixian had been influenced by Shang Shidai’s words, and calling out to her had been instinctive.
Truthfully, she hadn’t thought about what to say to Wei Yixian.
She said coolly, “Nothing important. Just saw you and thought I’d say hello.”
Wei Yixian gave her a look that clearly said, “You expect me to believe that?”
Shang Shixing didn’t care whether she believed it or not, stepping around Wei Yixian to study the girl who still had her back turned.
The girl hadn’t turned when Shang Shixing called out to Wei Yixian perhaps she hadn’t reacted in time.
But even now, the girl still refused to turn, meaning she was deliberately avoiding Shang Shixing.
The more the girl did this, the stronger that sense of familiarity grew.
So intense that it sparked an overwhelming curiosity within her.
Could it be someone she knew, deliberately avoiding her to remain unnoticed?
Otherwise, there was no explanation for why the person felt so familiar.
Just as Shang Shixing was about to pass Wei Yixian and approach Shang Shiqian, Wei Yixian suddenly reached out and grabbed her arm.
“Miss Shang, what do you think you’re doing?”
That tug severed the invisible thread of perception Shang Shixing had been holding onto.
Shang Shixing pulled her arm free from Wei Yixian’s grip and frowned. “Don’t touch me.”
Wei Yixian stepped between her and Shang Shiqian, his tone indifferent. “Miss Shang, mind the occasion.”
Shang Shixing smirked. “You seem unusually tense. Afraid I’ll find out who she is?”
She scoffed. “Relax. You and our family have no ties anymore. We wouldn’t harm an innocent person.”
Without waiting for Wei Yixian’s response, she beckoned to Shang Conglan, who had been watching from a corner.
Shang Conglan slowly walked past Shang Shiqian, deliberately eyeing her a few extra times.
Shang Shiqian didn’t avoid Shang Conglan’s gaze after all, when she had died, Shang Conglan was only ten and likely couldn’t remember her face anymore.
“Shixing-jie.”
Shang Shixing cast a meaningful glance at Wei Yixian. “Let’s go.”
As their figures gradually faded into the distance, Shang Shiqian felt as though her soul was drifting away with them.
As if drawn by an unseen force, she took a step forward.
But Wei Yixian’s words snapped her back to reality in an instant.
“Still want to look around?”
“No, let’s go back.” Shang Shiqian kept her head down, afraid someone might see the moisture in her eyes.
