- Chapter 33.1 - Secret Meeting
Shang Shiqian wasn’t worried that Xiao Luomeng would recognize her as “Shang Shiqian.”
As long as she didn’t voluntarily reveal the truth about the system and her resurrection, even if Xiao Luomeng had suspicions, she would only guess that Shang Shiqian might be her twin sister or suspect she had undergone plastic surgery.
As for why Xiao Luomeng was going to such lengths to investigate this, Shang Shiqian didn’t want to waste time pondering it.
Because if Xiao Luomeng wanted to extract any information from her, she would surely send signals first.
By then, Xiao Luomeng’s intentions would be crystal clear!
Shang Shiqian took out her phone and made a call: “Sister Pu. Yes, you can come pick me up now… I’ll wait for you at the east gate!”
Twenty minutes later, Shang Shiqian sat in the passenger seat, holding a cup of milk tea.
Pu Feifei asked, “You like drinking this? When we get back, I’ll make some for you using the purest milk and tea.”
Shang Shiqian shook her head. “I just had to do a lot of mental work while tutoring students today, so I craved something sweet. I happened to see a milk tea shop and bought a cup to try.”
“Playing chess is indeed mentally taxing. Starting tomorrow, I’ll squeeze some fresh juice for you to bring to school.”
“Thank you, Sister Pu.”
Pu Feifei added, “By the way, President Wei asked me to arrange for a tailor to come tomorrow morning to take your measurements for some custom-made clothes and shoes. So we’ll need to adjust our departure time. Is that okay with you?”
“I already have clothes to wear. Why do I need custom ones?”
“Some of the clothes you have now don’t fit you quite right, like suits and formal dresses.”
Shang Shiqian was puzzled. “But I don’t have any important occasions to attend. I wouldn’t even have a chance to wear those formal outfits.”
“I’m not entirely sure about that.”
Shang Shiqian sighed dramatically. “Ah, I get it. Sister Pu, you can’t reveal anything about Wei Yixian’s plans or decisions, right?”
Pu Feifei glanced at her quickly, both amused and exasperated. “Trying reverse psychology won’t work, I genuinely don’t know. But I think you might understand better than I do.”
In truth, after President Wei had upgraded Shang Shiqian’s status from “guest,” they no longer had to keep silent about Wei Yixian’s affairs as strictly as before.
But with President Wei suddenly arranging high-end custom clothing for Shang Shiqian, Pu Feifei had her own speculations though unconfirmed, so she couldn’t say anything carelessly.
Pu Feifei’s reminder immediately sparked a possibility in Shang Shiqian’s mind.
Her heartbeat quickened, a surge of excitement rising.
Could it be that Wei Yixian, despite saying she wouldn’t take her, had actually decided to bring her to the airshow after all?!
She couldn’t wait to confirm this guess with Wei Yixian.
However, Wei Yixian had a dinner engagement tonight, and Shang Shiqian wasn’t sure if calling to ask would disturb her so she held back for now.
–
At a five-star hotel by the riverside in East City.
“I have other matters to attend to. You young people should stay and chat.”
As the elderly man left, the spacious private dining room was left with only three people, including Wei Yixian.
Wei Yixian glanced at her watch and stood to leave.
The man across the table quickly stopped her. “Hey, Wei Yixian. Elder Gu asked us to sit down and talk properly. You can’t just disregard his wishes, can you?”
Wei Yixian swept her gaze over those present, her expression dark as she sneered. “What, you’ve set up a trap here and expect me to sit obediently while you try to take my head?”
Yin Zaishui spoke up, “That’s not what we meant. We just wanted to have a proper talk with you.”
Wei Yixian pressed her lips together, her eyes burning with anger and disappointment. “I’ve said it before, if this is about the acquisition, then talk to the person in charge!”
The man interjected, “Aren’t you the one ultimately in charge?”
Wei Yixian curled her lips into a mocking smile.
She hadn’t wanted to attend this dinner in the first place, but the host, Elder Gu, held considerable influence in political circles enough to affect certain operations of Wei Corporation. She couldn’t afford to snub him.
Upon arriving and seeing Yin Zaishui alongside Zhou Qinsi, the heir of Zhou Ran Group, she instantly realized this was a setup.
Thinking it over, Yin Zaishui’s grandfather had worked with Elder Gu before going into business. Indeed, only Yin Zaishui had the clout to persuade Elder Gu to host this gathering.
Wei Yixian looked down at Yin Zaishui. “For the sake of Zhou Ran Group, you’d even leverage your connection with Elder Gu. It seems your ties with the Zhou family run deeper than I thought.”
“It’s not what you think,” Yin Zaishui said helplessly, standing and moving closer to her. “Let’s go have a drink?”
Two weeks ago, Wei Yixian might have agreed, curious to hear what she had to say. But recalling the original plot as described by the system, she lost all interest.
“Save the drinks. If you have something to say, say it now.”
Yin Zaishui felt a pang of disappointment. She desperately wanted to understand why, since her return, Wei Yixian had treated her with such sharp hostility nothing like the dignified parting they’d had years ago. But with a third person present, she couldn’t ask.
Before Yin Zaishui could respond, Zhou Qinsi blurted out impatiently, “Call off your plans right now! Stop targeting our Zhou family!”
Wei Yixian let out a derisive chuckle, as if she’d heard the most absurd joke. “Your Zhou family isn’t even worth my attention. What I want has always been Zhou Ran Group.”
Zhou Qinsi retorted, “If your offer were reasonable, we might consider selling Zhou Ran Group to you. But 4 billion? That’s an insult!”
Wei Yixian shot a pointedly sarcastic look at Yin Zaishui her meaning clear.
You, Yin Zaishui, still dream of playing the white knight to save Zhou Ran Group, while all they care about is squeezing out more money before bailing.
Yin Zaishui remained expressionless, as if oblivious to Wei Yixian’s silent jab.
Wei Yixian turned back to Zhou Qinsi. “Then how much do you think Zhou Ran Group is worth?”
“At least 68 billion.”
Wei Yixian sneered. “Do I look like a fool to you? Zhou Ran Group has 19.7 billion in liquid assets but 24.4 billion in liabilities most of which are due within a year. Your cash flow is unstable… You’re teetering on the edge of bankruptcy. What gives you the confidence to negotiate with me?”
Acquiring Zhou Ran Group would mean inheriting its debts, so the purchase price couldn’t be too high otherwise, Wei Corporation would truly be the fool in this deal.
If she made such a loss, forget inheriting Wei Corporation she wouldn’t even get a minor role in a subsidiary.
Zhou Qinsi slammed the table in fury. “If it weren’t for you, Wei Yixian, we wouldn’t be in this mess!”
Over the years, Wei Yixian had aggressively expanded Wei Corporation’s market share by lowballing acquisitions and hostile takeovers. Many executives privately grumbled that she was nothing but a corporate vampire.
The Zhou family was one of the most prominent and influential wealthy families in East City. There was absolutely no way he would let Wei Yixian buy Zhou Ran Group at a bargain price!
If he hadn’t known Wei Yixian’s weakness, he wouldn’t have spent a fortune to bring Yin Zaishui back.
But now, it seemed Yin Zaishui, the first love and white moonlight didn’t hold as much weight in Wei Yixian’s heart as the rumors suggested!
Yin Zaishui turned to him and said, “Young Master Zhou, leave this to me. You should head back first.”
Zhou Qinsi knew Wei Yixian wouldn’t give him any face, so staying here would be pointless. He picked up his car keys and left.
Only then did Yin Zaishui speak to Wei Yixian. “I’d like us to sit down and talk.”
Wei Yixian glanced at his watch.
Shang Shiqian usually went to bed around ten. If he returned now, he could still make it in time for an hour of Go lessons.
Just as he was about to refuse, Yin Zaishui said, “You’ve checked the time several times already. Is someone waiting for you at home?”
Wei Yixian turned away, neither willing to explain nor trying to hide anything.
After all, the system had told him Yin Zaishui had already heard the “Gilded Cage Rumors.” This was a good opportunity to verify the truth of the system’s claims.
Yin Zaishui continued, “The wealthy circles in East City are all gossiping about you keeping a Caged Canary. Some even thought that canary was me.”
Wei Yixian asked, “Are you telling me this because you want me to clarify things for you?”
Yin Zaishui waved her hand dismissively. “No need. I’m no longer a student, let alone one from East City University. These rumors will die down on their own eventually. I’m just curious since when did you start doing things like this?”
“Do you think you know me well?”
“I don’t know the current you, but I knew the you from nine years ago.”
“If you want to reminisce, you can do it alone. I won’t keep you company.”
Suddenly, Yin Zaishui raised her phone in front of Wei Yixian.
His expression darkened the moment he saw the screen. “What’s the meaning of this?”
“Like I said, we should find a quiet place to talk without interruptions.”
Wei Yixian seemed to weigh his options before finally replying, “I have a speedboat at the dock.”
–
After receiving the call, Pu Feifei carried a glass of milk to the basement and said to Shang Shiqian, “Xiao Shang, Mr. Wei will be back very late tonight, so the Go lesson is canceled. You should rest early.”
“Huh?” Shang Shiqian paused, ignoring the sudden appearance of the system, and replied, “Alright, I’ll go to bed after finishing my homework.”
Since taking on an additional salary, her daily tasks had increased not only did she have to study top Go players in the current scene, but she also had to analyze her students’ playing styles and create tailored training plans for them.
Though it was more tedious, mentally taxing, and brain-draining than simply focusing on mastering Go as before, she found a different kind of joy in it.
Perhaps this was the greatest reward since her rebirth.
The Black Moonlight System huffed angrily: [You still have the leisure to think about Go? The original plot just took a huge leap forward!]
Shang Shiqian waited until Pu Feifei left before turning her attention back to the system. “Where has the plot progressed to now?”
[The female lead is having a romantic getaway with the white moonlight on a private yacht!
This was supposed to happen in the middle of the original story, when the female lead and the white moonlight had already transitioned from adversaries to allies, and their relationship had evolved from ambiguous to something more intimate.]
This happened ahead of time, and the progress bar of the original plot suddenly sped past the halfway mark.]
Shang Shiqian: “…”
She was stunned. “Can the original plot progress be calculated like that? If the final scene in the novel is the two of them holding hands and taking a stroll at sunset, and they act it out tomorrow evening, wouldn’t that just skip straight to the ending?”
[That wouldn’t happen… What matters is whether the key plot points have changed!
