The Cannon Fodder Ex-Wife Changes to Take the Black Moonlight Script - Chapter 30.2
Chen Yixun finally admitted awkwardly, “Cover for me if there’s a roll call. I’ll treat you to ice cream when I get back.”
“Deal.”
–
After meeting up, Shang Shiqian and Chen Yixun had lunch at the school cafeteria before heading to the bus stop.
Once they left the school gates, Chen Yixun noticed a girl in a white shirt and dress pants occasionally glancing around while following them.
Instantly alert, she whispered to Shang Shiqian, “Do you know that girl who’s been tailing us?”
Shang Shiqian turned and met the other’s gaze.
“Uh, yeah, I know her.”
She stopped and called out, “Chu Fei, didn’t you go back with Sister Pu?”
Chu Fei was one of Wei Yixian’s three female bodyguards.
That morning, when Pu Feifei had dropped Shang Shiqian off, Chu Fei had been sitting beside her.
Not wanting to assume and make a fool of herself, Shang Shiqian hadn’t asked if the woman was there to protect her.
Later, when she entered the school and Chu Fei didn’t follow, she’d dismissed the thought.
But seeing her still here, shadowing her, Shang Shiqian was now certain, Wei Yixian had assigned her as protection.
Sure enough, Chu Fei declared firmly, “My job is to protect you.”
“There’s no danger around me. You really don’t need to follow me.”
Growing up, she’d never had a bodyguard trailing her like this.
In fact, most of the Shang family didn’t have bodyguards either.
Her grandmother had raised them to be humble, low-key, and sincere.
Only her mother and second aunt, due to their status, had security personnel. The younger generation, like her, lived as ordinary people.
Her death couldn’t be blamed on the family not assigning her a bodyguard.
And she didn’t believe she was still a target now.
But Wei Yixian was the one paying Chu Fei and giving orders she clearly wouldn’t listen to Shang Shiqian.
Shang Shiqian sighed. “At least change your clothes. You stand out too much like this.”
Once they reached the shopping district, Shang Shiqian first bought Chu Fei a short-sleeved T-shirt and casual pants to change into.
While picking out gifts, Shang Shiqian couldn’t decide what to get Wei Yixian so she asked Chu Fei, “Chu Fei, do you know what Wei Yixian likes?”
Chu Fei replied, “I’m not familiar with President Wei’s preferences.”
Chen Yixun chimed in, “She has everything. Does she really need a gift from you?”
Chu Fei stole a glance at her.
Shang Shiqian said, “I know she has everything, but if gifts were given based on need, wouldn’t that mean many people couldn’t express their feelings?”
Chen Yixun laughed, “Then don’t worry about what she likes just give what comes from your heart.”
Shang Shiqian actually found this reasoning quite sound.
Coincidentally, it was Children’s Day today, and there were many stores selling children’s toys.
Shang Shiqian’s eyes glazed over as soon as she entered one, eventually settling on a set of electric wobbling duck toys.
Chu Fei hadn’t intended to meddle, but when she saw Shang Shiqian heading to checkout, she couldn’t help asking, “Is this a gift for President Wei?”
“Yep! Don’t you think they’re adorable? When linked together, they move forward like a little train!”
Chu Fei: …
Adorable, sure but this thing, it’s completely out of sync with President Wei’s vibe!!!
Chen Yixun burst out laughing. “Hahaha, only us college students would like this, right?”
Shang Shiqian: Oh right, Wei Yixian is already 29, she probably wouldn’t enjoy playing with this, would she?
But then again, if Wei Yixian didn’t want it, she could always give it to Pu Feifei!
In the end, she bought it anyway.
Shang Shiqian also picked out two Go-themed keychains, one black stone and one white stone.
Each piece had a tassel hanging below, perfect for attaching to a backpack or folding fan.
After selecting gifts for herself and Wei Yixian, Shang Shiqian asked, “Yixun, have you decided what you want?”
Chen Yixun replied, “That depends on whether you’re willing to part with one of the white stone keychains for me.”
Shang Shiqian agreed readily, “Sure, it’s just a keychain. I can always buy another pair, they’re not expensive.”
“…” Chen Yixun’s smile froze on her face.
Chu Fei tilted her head back to stare at the ceiling, replaying all the hardships she’d endured in the military, just to keep from laughing.
Exhausted, Chen Yixun pointed at a claw machine outside and said, “Never mind. Just come with me to grab a plushie instead.”
“You want a plushie? I’ll buy it for you. I’ve never played a claw machine before, I wouldn’t know how.”
Before Chen Yixun could lecture her, Chu Fei stepped in. “I can. Miss Shang, I can teach you.”
“Much appreciated.”
Chen Yixun: …
She was done.
Was this “Chu Fei” her nemesis or something?
After spending over thirty coins on “tuition,” Shang Shiqian finally managed to grab a palm-sized knockoff My Little Pony plushie for Chen Yixun.
Hearing Chen Yixun’s thanks, Shang Shiqian felt a weight lift off her shoulders.
She’d much rather spend time studying Go strategies than waste another minute here with claw machines.
Before dinner, Pu Feifei came to pick them up by car.
After dropping Chen Yixun off at the East City University dormitory area, Pu Feifei made small talk with Shang Shiqian: “What did you buy while shopping today?”
Shang Shiqian felt this sounded like a parent asking their child fresh from school: What did you learn in class today?
But she still cheerfully shared her gifts with Pu Feifei.
After listening, Pu Feifei fell silent.
Was she sure President Wei wouldn’t toss this wobbling duck straight into the trash?
Worried that Wei Yixian might dampen Shang Shiqian’s enthusiasm, she suggested, “Isn’t President Wei learning Go? Maybe the Go keychains would be better?”
Shang Shiqian was annoyed, why was everyone eyeing her Go keychains?
But since Pu Feifei recommended it, there must be a good reason.
She wasn’t stingy, so she decisively parted with the keychains.
–
At night, as soon as Wei Yixian stepped through the door, she saw five small toys whether they were chicks or ducklings was unclear slowly waddling past her while singing a song.
Wei Yixian: ?
Had a child come to her house?
Even more absurdly, Shang Shiqian cheerfully exclaimed, “Wei Yixian, happy Children’s Day!”
Wei Yixian massaged her temples.
She let out an involuntary chuckle.
Though her smile was hidden behind her hand, the soft sound of her laughter still reached Shang Shiqian and Pu Feifei.
Shang Shiqian turned to Pu Feifei and said, “See, Sister Pu? I told you she’d like this gift.”
Wei Yixian composed herself and narrowed her eyes. “What gift?”
Pu Feifei jumped in to answer, “Miss Shang prepared a gift for you but was worried you wouldn’t like it.”
Wei Yixian’s lips curled downward as she eyed the toys, which had already formed a procession and were moving away.
“‘Gift’? You mean those ugly ducks?”
Shang Shiqian corrected her, “What ugly ducks? The leader is a little yellow duck, followed by three yellow chicks, then two owls and a pigeon with huge, adorable eyes, and one that’s probably a goose. They’re so cute!”
Wei Yixian gave her a deadpan look. “How old are you?”
“T-twenty-one?” Shang Shiqian wasn’t entirely sure whether she should count herself as 21 or 29.
Wei Yixian’s expression darkened instantly.
Pu Feifei’s heart nearly leaped out of her chest, and she hurriedly added, “Actually, Miss Shang prepared other gifts for you too.”
Shang Shiqian: …
Do I really have to give them now?
Reluctantly, she pulled out two small gift boxes and handed them to Wei Yixian.
“I know you lack nothing, and I wasn’t sure what you’d like, so I just picked gifts based on my own preferences.”
Wei Yixian could tell what was inside just from the designs on the boxes.
Instead of taking them, she asked, “Why are you suddenly giving me gifts?”
It couldn’t possibly be just for Children’s Day.
Shang Shiqian leaned closer, tilting her head. “Then why did you take me in and treat me so well?”
Wei Yixian’s breath hitched.
Her motives were too shameful to voice.
After a long pause, she glanced at Shang Shiqian and said, “Probably because I’m an incredibly kind person. Seeing someone who looks exactly like my ex-wife wandering the streets, I couldn’t bear to leave her there.”
Shang Shiqian was stunned and bewildered, but upon reflection, it made perfect sense.
Though Wei Yixian had a strange temper, judging a person by their actions rather than their intentions, her behavior proved she was a good-hearted person.
How could someone who wasn’t kind become the protagonist, after all!
Wei Yixian abruptly shifted her tone, returning to her usual cold arrogance. “At the same time, you wandering around with my ex-wife’s face would cause me a great deal of trouble.”
Shang Shiqian relaxed. “Then this gift is to thank you for your kindness.”
Wei Yixian smirked so easy to appease.
She took the boxes and opened them to find two pendant charms, one black and one white, shaped like Go pieces. She arched a brow. “Both for me?”
Shang Shiqian had a sudden idea and evasively replied, “You can choose.”
Wei Yixian suppressed a smile and picked the white piece.
Shang Shiqian was puzzled. “Why do you all prefer the white one?”
Wei Yixian keenly caught a particular phrase. “‘All’?”
“Oh, Chen Yixun. She got interested in Go recently and wanted to learn. I guess she saw these pendants while shopping and wanted one too.”
Wei Yixian: …
Pu Feifei: …
Wei Yixian clenched the pendant, asking with a half-smile, “Then why didn’t you give it to her?”
“I said I’d give her a set, but she refused and switched to wanting a claw machine prize instead,” Shang Shiqian speculated from a peer’s perspective. “Maybe it was just a passing fancy, not something she truly wanted.”
Pu Feifei seemed to hesitate, on the verge of speaking.
Wei Yixian shot her a glance, and she immediately walked away as if nothing had happened.
Wei Yixian pressed further, “You even won a prize for her from the claw machine?”
“Yeah. Ah, enough talk, I’m hungry.”
Shang Shiqian had already placed the gift in Wei Yixian’s hands and quickly slipped away with her black stone pendant, hoping to avoid any reaction from Wei Yixian that might lead her to take the pendant back.
The five wobbly little ducks sang cheerfully as they waddled back, slowly bumping against her feet.
Just as Wei Yixian was about to lift her foot to kick them away, Pu Feifei, who was there to collect the toys, hurriedly said, “President Wei, this is a special gift from Miss Shang!”
Wei Yixian stared at her expressionlessly. “Hurry up and take it away.”
As Pu Feifei gathered the toys to leave, Wei Yixian added, “I see the first floor is empty and lacking a claw machine. Go get a few.”
Pu Feifei: …
