- Chapter 26.1 - Treatment
When Shang Shiqian mentioned wanting to watch the live TV broadcast, Pu Feifei took her to the basement level.
The basement was different from an ordinary cellar.
The space stood five to six meters high, with an open area of nearly two hundred square meters.
A third of it extended beneath the garden, featuring a glass ceiling that kept the area bright even without artificial lighting.
There was also a door leading directly to the underground garage and the villa’s main entrance.
Pu Feifei called this the “entertainment living room,” as it not only boasted a cinema-grade oversized projection screen but also had a pool table and a mahjong table.
The enclosed areas were an esports room and a KTV home theater.
Shang Shiqian was surprised. “Wei Yixian actually has hobbies like these?”
A pool table was one thing, but a mahjong table. She found it hard to imagine Wei Yixian playing mahjong. It just didn’t seem to fit her usual demeanor.
Pu Feifei explained, “Director Wei rarely comes down here. This space is mainly for everyone to relax and unwind after work.”
Then, in the esports room, Shang Shiqian spotted two female bodyguards dressed in black suits.
It suddenly dawned on her why Wei Yixian’s bodyguards always seemed to appear and disappear mysteriously they were probably killing time here when off duty.
“Hey, since Wei Yixian has already left, why don’t they have to go out?”
Pu Feifei couldn’t very well tell her that these two bodyguards had been specifically assigned by Wei Yixian to protect her.
Instead, she said, “Bodyguards and drivers work in shifts. Today, another team is on field duty, and there’s another group training at the boxing gym next to the tennis court.”
Shang Shiqian nodded in understanding.
She wasn’t particularly interested in what the bodyguards did in their free time, so she stepped out.
Pu Feifei turned on the projector.
Glancing at the time displayed in the upper right corner, Shang Shiqian suddenly realized: More than an hour had passed since Wei Yixian left, enough time to cross the entire East City.
Traffic in East City was light on weekends, so Wei Yixian should have reached her destination by now. The system hadn’t shown any reaction, which meant she probably wasn’t meeting her so-called “white moonlight.”
After the speeches by the leaders and student representatives from various art academies, Wei Yixian entered the exhibition hall of the art museum without waiting for the group photo session.
Xie Mei, who had rushed back from outside, quickly approached Wei Yixian and whispered, “Director Wei, it’s done. The results will be ready in ten days at the earliest.”
Wei Yixian frowned. “That’s too slow. I need the results within two days.”
Xie Mei replied, “Director Wei, the lab said even expedited paternity tests take at least three days. And this is a complicated kinship test determining relationships like siblings, uncles and nephews, or aunts and nieces is much more challenging than paternity tests, so it naturally takes longer.”
Wei Yixian said dismissively, “That’s based on the assumption that both parties were conceived through traditional heterosexual reproduction.”
Xie Mei paused.
She had nearly forgotten that Shang Yunyu’s three daughters were all conceived through Parthenogenesis Technology.
Because the cost of this method ran into the millions, making it unaffordable for most families, it remained uncommon in society.
But precisely because of its uniqueness, while kinship testing was more complex, the results would be far more precise.
In other words, if the DNA test results of the other sample matched the genetic characteristics of Shang Shidai’s DNA, it could be confirmed that the person was biologically related to Shang Shidai.
While it couldn’t be 100% certain that they were sisters, the fact that the other person was conceived through parthenogenesis technology alone ruled out the possibility of an ordinary person disguising themselves as a member of the Shang family through plastic surgery.
Wei Yixian emphasized again, “Three days.”
Xie Mei sighed helplessly, “I’ll have them expedite it further.”
Wei Yixian asked, “You didn’t leave any loose ends, did you?”
Xie Mei replied, “I didn’t disclose the source of these two samples. I also chose institutions that don’t know my background. To prevent tampering, I even sent them to two different testing agencies.”
The other sample had been provided by Wei Yixian. Though she hadn’t said whose it was, Xie Mei could guess who else would make Wei Yixian go to such lengths besides Shang Shiyu?
So, is President Wei now suspecting that Shang Shiyu is Shang Yunyu’s illegitimate daughter? Surely she can’t be thinking that Shang Shiqian has come back from the dead!
Xie Mei chuckled mockingly at the absurdity of the thought.
After taking group photos, Shang Shidai entered the exhibition hall and was surprised to find Wei Yixian still there, carefully examining the students’ works.
She had assumed Wei Yixian would leave right after the opening ceremony.
Shang Shidai walked over and saw the piece that had caught Wei Yixian’s attention.
It was an illustration titled Rebirth, vibrant in color and eerie in style.
The painting depicted a skull with its mouth gaping wide, its hollow eye sockets now filled with blooming flowers and leaves. Lush blossoms and tangled vines surrounded it, their roots entwined around the skull as if feeding on its life or perhaps as if the skull was using its last nutrients to bloom into radiant flowers.
Nearby, other viewers discussed the piece:
“The title is intriguing. Does Rebirth mean the skull’s owner has transformed into flowers, continuing to live in another form to achieve rebirth? Or is it about the flowers gaining new life by absorbing its nutrients?”
“The relationship between the skull and the flowers might not be so sinister. Rebirth could symbolize the continuation of life, the skull represents death, which can never truly return, so perhaps it willingly gave itself. A fitting analogy might be, an organ donor and the recipient.”
“But those are dodder flowers, and the skull’s mouth is wide open, as if silently screaming from having its life drained. This piece feels deeply satirical.”
Wei Yixian walked away.
Shang Shidai had initially intended to follow and provoke her, but suddenly, the idea felt pointless.
Last time, at the banquet, she had loudly exposed Wei Yixian’s habit of keeping a Caged Canary. Her eldest sister had scolded her afterward:
“Picking a fight with her in front of so many people, if you win, you just look aggressive. If you lose, you embarrass the Shang family. Stop acting like a firecracker around her no real damage, just one loud pop, and people will see you as nothing more than a brat playing with noisemakers.”
Shang Shidai protested, “But she took that woman home! They live together now. Even Shang Qiguan never got that treatment. Why should she?”
“That’s her business. It has nothing to do with us or with Xiaoqian.”
Shang Shidai’s expression remained stubborn, clearly unwilling to accept the advice.
Shang Shixing sighed, “Xiao Dai, the reason I’m advising you like this isn’t for Wei Yixian’s sake, but because Xiao Qian doesn’t need to be tied to Wei Yixian. It’s been eight years let Xiao Qian break free from this terrible relationship, okay?”
–
Wei Yixian returned to Tianhao Garden. Hearing that Shang Shiqian was on the basement level, she changed into home clothes and went downstairs.
The sunshades in the basement had been drawn, leaving the entire entertainment lounge dim. The light from the projector and the wall lamps in the hallway were the only sources of illumination.
Shang Shiqian sat cross-legged on the carpet, intently watching the four simultaneous matches on the screen, occasionally pausing to sip the juice on the table.
The glass of juice was soon empty. Just as Shang Shiqian was about to pour a second glass, she noticed it was already full.
Only then, pulling her thoughts away from the game of Go, did she realize someone was sitting on the sofa behind her.
“Ah!” By the light reflected from the screen, Shang Shiqian recognized the person’s face. “Wei Yixian?”
Wei Yixian sat silently on the sofa, staring at her without blinking. It was downright eerie!
