- Chapter 23 - Entanglement
After returning to Tianhao Garden, Wei Yixian did something unusual instead of heading straight upstairs, she sat down on the single sofa in the living room and asked the maid to pour her a drink.
Shang Shiqian had just stepped onto the staircase when she heard this. She retracted her foot and turned back to the living room, saying, “If you’re not feeling well, you shouldn’t drink.”
She knew the current Wei Yixian was too proud and stubborn to listen to advice, but she couldn’t just stand by and watch Wei Yixian harm her own body.
Unexpectedly, Wei Yixian’s deep gaze swept over her face, and she changed her mind. “Then juice it is.”
“What would you like, Miss Shang?” the maid asked.
“I’ll have milk.”
As soon as Shang Shiqian sat down, Wei Yixian casually asked, “Why the switch to milk now? No more juice?”
Her tone was so natural and relaxed, as if they were old friends catching up.
Shang Shiqian answered without thinking, “I always drink milk at night helps me sleep better. I only drink juice during the day when my brain needs sugar for competitions.”
After saying this, she froze in surprise. “How did you know I drink juice more often?”
Wei Yixian replied, “You always have a glass of juice before leaving in the morning.”
Shang Shiqian suddenly understood.
She hadn’t expected Wei Yixian to be so observant, noticing even this small detail.
Then again, it could have been the maid who mentioned it after all, Wei Yixian had only started having breakfast with her yesterday.
Wei Yixian’s explanation made perfect sense, but Shang Shiqian was the one who had inadvertently revealed something.
Wei Yixian asked, “Did you often compete before?”
Shang Shiqian’s mind raced. “I used to play Go against others at East City University that counts as a competition, right?”
“Is that so…” Wei Yixian slowed her speech, deliberately drawing out the last syllable.
Her voice was smooth and pleasant, but Shang Shiqian felt uneasy.
Wei Yixian asked, “Did you win?”
“Yes.”
“Seems you’re quite good at Go.”
“I suppose so.”
“Then teach me someday!”
Shang Shiqian nodded in agreement.
A moment later, she snapped out of it and let out a surprised, “Huh?”
Wei Yixian took a sip of juice, tilting her head slightly. “Was I not clear enough?”
Naturally, Shang Shiqian was delighted that Wei Yixian wanted to learn Go. She asked, “Do you have the time?”
“I can spare an hour every evening.”
Shang Shiqian considered it. “An hour… should be enough to cover the basics of Go.”
Wei Yixian curled her lips slightly, setting down her glass. “Give me your hand.”
Shang Shiqian looked puzzled.
“I should at least confirm that my Go teacher is truly an experienced player, shouldn’t I?”
Shang Shiqian: “…”
It made sense.
But she couldn’t shake the feeling that Wei Yixian was more proactive and lively than usual tonight.
She extended her right hand, and the next second, she felt as if her fingers had been wrapped in ice water.
She was stunned, how could Wei Yixian’s hands be so cold?
Wei Yixian leaned forward slightly, her left hand gripping Shang Shiqian’s wrist while the fingertips of her right hand lightly brushed against the calloused knuckles.
Shang Shiqian’s nails were short.
Though there was no rule that Go players had to trim their nails, Shang Shiqian felt that overly long nails were unhygienic, while overly short ones risked paronychia. So she only trimmed them before competitions.
Wei Yixian could no longer remember whether Shang Shiqian had trimmed her nails the last time they met eight years ago.
But the day after their wedding anniversary was the Center Game Tournament, and by then, Shang Shiqian would have certainly trimmed her nails.
From the moment she brought “Shang Shiyu” home until now, “Shang Shiyu” hadn’t cut her nails, and their length precisely matched the characteristic of having been trimmed just two days before they first met.
Shang Shiqian’s wrist ached from the grip, but she didn’t make a sound. Instead, the doubts in her heart only grew heavier.
Why did Wei Yixian look so upset?
Could it be that this hand reminded her of something, stirring up painful memories?
Just as Shang Shiqian was about to withdraw her hand, Wei Yixian’s fingers slipped between hers, intertwining tightly.
Suddenly, Shang Shiqian’s heart felt as if struck by an electric current.
Her heartbeat raced uncontrollably, her face flushed hot, and goosebumps quietly rose on her arms.
It was as though Wei Yixian wasn’t holding her hand but gripping her heart itself.
The rhythm of her pulse was entirely under Wei Yixian’s control.
“W-Wei Yixian, you!”
Wei Yixian lifted her gaze.
Under the light, Shang Shiqian’s expression was laid bare. Wei Yixian could clearly see how her face, originally fair with a healthy glow, gradually flushed crimson, turning completely red.
Wei Yixian’s eyes shimmered with a hint of mischief. “Such a weak grip. I doubt you’re even qualified for this job.”
Shang Shiqian’s thoughts swayed between reason and emotion.
Without thinking, she blurted, “What job?”
“You teach me chess, and I pay you. That’s the job.”
Wei Yixian suddenly withdrew her hand, her expression neutral, as if the tenderness she’d inadvertently shown moments ago had been nothing but Shang Shiqian’s imagination.
Their intertwined hands had been tied by an invisible thread. Now that they’d separated, the thread snapped.
Shang Shiqian’s heart abruptly hollowed. It took her half a second to pull herself out of the hazy, soft confusion.
She said, “No need for payment. You’ve taken me in, provided food and clothes those expenses already far exceed what an hour of teaching is worth.”
Wei Yixian crossed her arms. “Teaching me has to be worth at least five thousand per hour. Anything less would lower my standards.”
Shang Shiqian: …
Very domineering CEO of her.
Still, high-level professional players typically charged over five hundred per hour for one-on-one coaching.
Wei Yixian’s tenfold markup fit perfectly with her domineering CEO logic.
And…
Shang Shiqian suddenly wondered was this Wei Yixian’s way of dispelling the Caged Canary rumors?
She was Wei Yixian’s Go teacher, hence her presence at Wei Yixian’s home. Wei Yixian’s chauffeuring was just a sign of respect for her teacher, unrelated to keeping a Caged Canary!
With this realization, Shang Shiqian felt as though she’d unlocked a hidden potential. She said sincerely, “Wei Yixian, you’re really so clever!”
Wei Yixian: ?
Was that sarcasm?
Since “Shang Shiyu” wasn’t conversing with the system and she couldn’t read “Shang Shiyu’s” thoughts, Wei Yixian didn’t waste energy puzzling over this abrupt remark.
–
Shang Shiqian left to rest at the appointed time.
Wei Yixian poured the half-finished juice down the sink, then retrieved a bottle of wine from the cabinet and returned to the living room.
On the sofa where Shang Shiqian had sat lay a tablet.
Ever since Shang Shiqian got a phone, this tablet had fallen out of favor.
Wei Yixian picked it up casually, unlocked it, and checked what Shang Shiqian usually did with it.
There were only three newly added apps on the tablet: a Go game platform, a sports news app, and LeDou, the hottest short video app at the moment.
The Wei Group held 18% of the shares in LeDou’s parent company, making it the second-largest shareholder, just behind the founder’s 25% stake.
Wei Yixian rarely wasted time scrolling through videos or reading novels, but since her upcoming overseas business trip was related to LeDou’s international expansion, she decided to browse the app briefly to familiarize herself with the product.
Perhaps because Shang Shiqian often browsed Go-related content, LeDou recommended quite a few Go videos to her.
Wei Yixian scoffed inwardly, what a waste of time.
She took a sip of wine and was about to exit LeDou when her fingers suddenly froze.
Wei: “Your grip is so weak can you even handle it?”
Shang Si: “A few lessons with me, and you’ll find out.”
Chen Yixun: “Why didn’t you react when I grabbed your hand?”
Shang Si: “You grabbed. She coiled.”
Chen Yixun: “Then next time.”
Wei: “Get lost. There won’t be a next time.”
