- Chapter 19 - The Bargaining Chip
Ten years ago.
Wei Da, chairman of the Wei Group, fell seriously ill. Even after undergoing surgery, he was left to spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair.
Thus, the Wei family plunged into a battle for succession.
At least, that was how it appeared on the surface.
In truth, the struggle for the Wei family’s fortune had begun much earlier.
But back then, Wei Da was still in good health, and no one dared make reckless moves for fear of making a mistake and being prematurely eliminated from contention.
Wei Da had two sons and two daughters.
However, those involved in the battle weren’t just his children, it also included his nephews and nieces.
Wei Yongkun, Wei Yixian’s father, held the status of the eldest son, but Wei Da did not prioritize birth order. On the contrary, he particularly favored several of his nephews and nieces.
As the eldest son, if he lacked capability, he would have no advantage in this battle for the family fortune.
But talent was innate. If he had been capable, Wei Da would have chosen him as the heir decades ago—why even consider other descendants?
So Wei Yongkun pinned his hopes on his own children.
He had been married twice, with two legitimate children and three illegitimate ones.
His eldest son, Wei Yiwu, was born to his first wife. Though married, his wife’s family business was in decline, offering little support.
His eldest daughter from his second marriage, Wei Yixian, was outstanding—but Wei Da had no shortage of outstanding children, grandchildren, nephews, and nieces.
Wei Yixian might secure some decent resources, but she couldn’t tip the scales in his favor in the inheritance battle.
The remaining three children, born to mistresses and girlfriends, were less impressive than Wei Yixian, so he didn’t consider them.
In the end, Wei Yongkun decided to “sell” Wei Yixian.
As long as he could fetch a good price, the bargaining chip in his hands would surely sway the old man’s judgment in his favor.
In his plan, Wei Yixian was already nineteen just over half a year away from being legally eligible for marriage. An engagement at this age was the perfect arrangement.
He began searching for a suitable political marriage partner for Wei Yixian.
At the time, Wei Yixian was dating Yin Zaishui, so his plans naturally met with her resistance.
But Wei Yixian’s defiance didn’t last long she was forced to break up with Yin Zaishui.
Heartbroken, Yin Zaishui emigrated abroad.
Six months later, the Wei family officially announced Wei Yixian’s engagement to Shang Shiqian, the fourth daughter of the Shang family.
The marriage alliance between the Shang and Wei families undoubtedly added significant weight to Wei Yongkun’s position in the inheritance battle.
And indeed, it did.
The Wei Group’s stock price soared on the news.
After Wei Yixian and Shang Shiqian married, Wei Da assigned Wei Yongkun to a key position in the group, entrusting him with handling corporate affairs.
Later, Wei Da passed away.
When the will was read, Wei Yongkun, backed by the group’s senior executives, was successfully elected chairman at the shareholders’ meeting, emerging as the ultimate victor.
As a result, Wei Yixian stood poised to become the next heir of the Wei family.
But not long after, Shang Shiqian was kidnapped, assaulted, and killed.
The perpetrator was a mentally ill man obsessed with Wei Yixian.
According to investigations, he had long harbored resentment toward Shang Shiqian.
Traces left on his social media suggested his motive was Shang Shiqian’s neglect of his “goddess,” Wei Yixian.
Their marriage had been in name only.
Rather than let Wei Yixian remain trapped and tormented by this union, perhaps it was better for her to be freed from it sooner.
Such an absurd reason inevitably made people suspect that it was all a setup by Wei Yixian, intended to make room for the white moonlight in her heart.
Why didn’t she divorce?
Because there was no reason to divorce, and she feared opposition from both the Shang and Wei families.
The outside world unanimously believed that even if Wei Yixian wasn’t the one who orchestrated the scheme, she was still inextricably linked to Shang Shiqian’s death.
After all, it was a fact that Shang Shiqian had been killed because of her.
Because of this, the Shang family resented Wei Yixian, severed ties with the Wei family, and almost ceased all contact.
To appease the Shang family’s anger, Wei Yongkun exiled Wei Yixian to a subsidiary company, what was commonly referred to as “banishment to the frontier.”
It wasn’t until several years later, when people had nearly forgotten these events, that Wei Yixian made her “comeback,” crushing all her siblings in the process.
At the beginning of this year, she became the CEO of the Wei Group and the new-generation heir of the Wei family.
The wealthy circles of East City all knew.
Her success wasn’t due to Wei Yongkun’s pity or affection but rather her ruthless business tactics.
During her years of “banishment,” she became the feared “Dark Warrior” of the financial district.
Countless companies were driven to the brink of bankruptcy by her, only to be acquired, dismantled, and sold off.
Some joked that the only reason Wei Yongkun handed the Wei Group over to her was to prevent it from becoming the next target of her hostile takeovers and dismantling.
Now, Wei Yixian’s position was unshakable. She no longer needed to worry about being usurped, nor did she have to conceal her personal life anymore.
Not only could she keep her white moonlight as a Caged Canary at home, but even if she openly paraded the person around, the Wei family couldn’t do a thing about it.
The only question was, how did Shang Shidai find out about Wei Yixian’s Caged Canary?
–
Shang Shidai learned of this thanks to her extensive social circle.
This morning, one of her wealthy heiress friends was dropping her girlfriend off at East City University when she spotted a limited-edition luxury car parked at the entrance.
The owner of that car was someone the heiress recognized Wei Yixian, CEO of the Wei Group.
Seeing a girl with her face tightly concealed step out of the car, the heiress was almost certain that this person had an intimate relationship with Wei Yixian.
First, Wei Yixian had no connection to East City University, nor did any younger members of the Wei family attend the school yet the girl was clearly a student there.
Second, given Wei Yixian’s personality, she would never casually drive a girl to university without reason.
Eliminating the possibilities of familial or platonic relationships, the only remaining option was a romantic one.
After uncovering this explosive secret, the heiress immediately told Shang Shidai.
Shang Shidai said dismissively, “She has nothing to do with our Shang family anymore. We don’t need her to remain a widow for my sister.”
But whenever she saw Wei Yixian, who was always surrounded by admirers, and then thought of her sister, who should have been just as dazzling but whose life had been cut short at 21, now fading from memory, she couldn’t help but feel deep resentment.
By exposing Wei Yixian’s secret about keeping a Caged Canary in front of so many people, she wanted to publicly humiliate her.
Yet, to her surprise, Wei Yixian didn’t react with anger or coldness. Instead, the corners of her lips curled into a meaningful smile.
“Are you that interested?” Wei Yixian asked.
Shang Shidai: “…”
Like a bristling cat, she snapped, “Who cares about your dirty secrets?!”
Wei Yixian left her with a cold smirk, stepping past her and heading toward the hotel’s south entrance.
Shang Shidai stood rooted to the spot for a moment before suddenly gritting her teeth and chasing after him.
At the deserted south gate, she shouted at Wei Yixian who was about to get into his car: “How dare you just walk away from all this and happily start a new life?”
Wei Yixian turned his head, his eyes dark with unreadable emotions.
“Wasn’t cutting all ties with Shang Shiqian exactly what your Shang family wanted? What standing do you have to question me?”
Rich second-generation: I was just giving my girlfriend a ride to class. Projecting here, but CEO Wei must be doing the same.
System: Rounding off, that’s basically it.
CEO Wei: )
