- Chapter 18 - The Houseguest
For the past two days, a Go master had been frequenting the Go Room. News that none of the professional players from the Go Club could defeat her spread quickly through East City University.
Many professional players who had already achieved dan ranks didn’t believe it and asked in the group chat, “What’s her name? What’s her major?”
A student from the Go Club replied, “No idea. She comes early every morning to play and leaves by evening. When asked about her major, she stays silent really mysterious.”
Other students in the chat chimed in with bits of information about this enigmatic master:
“Never seen her on this campus maybe she’s from Linjiang Campus.”
“But the girl who’s often with her is from the Financial Management program.”
“I heard the Financial Management girl call her ‘Shang Shiyu.’”
“Shang? Or Shàng? There aren’t any students with those surnames in the Linjiang Campus Go branch either!”
Mocking voices soon rose in the chat: “Maybe she’s just an amateur playing for fun? You guys can’t even beat an amateur, how embarrassing is that?”
The taunt was blatant, and one of the female player’s defeated opponents retorted indignantly, “All you do is talk. If you’re so great, come and play her yourself!”
The argument raged in the group until evening.
Then, Li Zhishen, the head of the Go Club’s Chess Arts Department, suddenly posted a video of himself playing against someone and tagged Du He and Yi Jing, who were currently in Pengcheng for special training.
“Her skill is no less than yours.”
The moment this message appeared, the group fell silent.
Du He was one of the few dozen players standing at the pinnacle of Xia’s Go scene.
Not only was he a 9-dan, but he had also successfully challenged the previous champion in March’s Meijin Tournament, earning the prestigious “Meijin” title.
Like the “Tengen,” the “Meijin” was one of the highest honors in Xia’s Go world.
Over the decades, only a handful of players had ever held both titles simultaneously.
And to date, only 11 players had ever claimed the Meijin title alone.
Yi Jing didn’t have as many titles as Du He, but as an 8-dan professional, he had defeated several 9-dans, including Du He himself.
The only reason he hadn’t been promoted to 9-dan was his lack of a world championship and insufficient ranking points.
Still, both he and Du He currently played for the Pengcheng Flying Dragons Go Club. In the ongoing Weijia League, Du He was the team’s captain, while Yi Jing served as vice-captain.
But even leaving them aside, Li Zhishen, who had spoken in the group was no ordinary figure either.
A 5-dan professional, he was East City University’s third-strongest player after Du He and Yi Jing.
For him to make such a statement meant he had already faced the girl and lost.
Whether he was exaggerating her skill remained to be seen.
Du He didn’t respond, but Yi Jing, after watching the video, privately messaged Li Zhishen: “A female player?”
Li Zhishen replied, “A female player.”
“Do you recognize her?”
“No. Never seen her in any national-level tournaments.”
After a long pause, Yi Jing said, “Don’t let the university find out. Help keep it quiet until I get back.”
Li Zhishen understood his reasoning perfectly.
It was obvious she wasn’t a student here. If the university discovered her, they’d ban her from coming to play for security reasons.
Once Yi Jing returned from the Weijia League, finding her again would be like searching for a needle in a haystack.
After ending the chat, Li Zhishen posted in the group: “Confirmed, she’s a student from the Linjiang campus. However, she didn’t join the Go club and prefers to keep a low profile. There’s no need to dig up her personal information.”
Although he was just a department head, he held significant decision-making power regarding qualifications and slots for many Go tournaments. Once he spoke, the Go club students largely refrained from making further comments.

At the most luxurious hotel in Dongcheng, a grand cocktail party was underway.
The party was hosted by the organizers of tonight’s charity auction as a gesture of gratitude toward the philanthropists in attendance.
All present were affluent socialites from Dongcheng who had just participated in the auction.
A female secretary, phone in hand, weaved through the mingling elites and stepped out into the courtyard beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows.
Dressed in a white evening gown, Wei Yixian sat on a wicker chair, reviewing a medical report.
Her usually loose raven-black hair was elegantly pinned up, revealing her slender, porcelain neck.
Beneath her exquisite makeup, her complexion glowed like moonlight on frost.
The lenses of her glasses reflected the cold gleam of the overhead lights, while the gemstones in her earrings sparkled brilliantly.
Even after seeing this face for over three months, the secretary couldn’t help but be momentarily captivated.
The only reason she didn’t become infatuated was likely because Wei Yixian’s demeanor made it impossible to tolerate her for long, no matter how stunning she looked.
The secretary said, “President Wei, the driver Old Ma reports that Miss Shang has left the university and will arrive at Tianhao Garden in twenty minutes.”
But inwardly, she wondered: Who is this Miss Shang?
Is she from the Shang family?
But wasn’t it said that the Shangs had fallen out with President Wei because of Fourth Miss Shang? How could someone from the Shang family be staying at Tianhao Garden?
Wait! Tianhao Garden…
Good heavens, could she actually be staying at President Wei’s home?!
She had only taken two days off, how had she become so out of touch with President Wei’s work and personal life?
Wei Yixian closed the medical report and said, “Understood. Have the driver meet me at the south gate. You may clock out now.”
Hearing she could leave, the secretary promptly forgot about investigating “Miss Shang” and hurried off to call the driver.
Wei Yixian was strikingly beautiful, the heir to the Wei family, and CEO of Wei Corporation.
With the dual allure of wealth and beauty, she was naturally one of the most prominent figures at the party, her every move under scrutiny.
However, her aloof demeanor left few opportunities for others to approach her.
Now, with the party only halfway through, her early departure unsettled some attendees, who rushed to strike up a conversation.
Wei Yixian showed no warmth toward those blocking her path.
Most with any sense would have taken the hint and stepped aside, but these individuals mistook her icy composure for her usual demeanor, completely missing the deepening frost in her gaze.
Just then, a mocking voice drifted down from the duplex staircase on the second floor.
“If you don’t leave now, bankruptcy might be just around the corner.”
The remark was downright rude, and they were about to rebuke the speaker until they looked up and swallowed their words.
Wei Yixian also glanced up briefly at the source of the voice.
She had recognized who it was the moment she heard it.
As expected.
Someone stammered, “Fifth Miss Shang…”
This was none other than Shang Yunyu’s third daughter, Fifth Miss Shang, Shang Shidai.
She had attended the auction tonight, and one of the pieces sold was her painting, which fetched over two million.
When she appeared and confronted Wei Yixian, most of the onlookers watched silently with a spectator’s mentality.
Everyone present was part of Dongcheng’s elite circles, well aware of the relationship between Wei Yixian and the Shang family, as well as the reason behind Shang Shidai’s sarcastic remarks toward Wei Yixian.
Shang Shidai smiled faintly and descended the stairs, stopping in front of Wei Yixian.
“Leaving so soon? Going back to keep your Caged Canary company?”
The moment these words were spoken, the entire room was stunned.
What did that mean?
Wei Yixian was keeping a Caged Canary at home?!
But recalling the recent rumors about Wei Yixian’s first love his “white moonlight” returning to the country, they found it unsurprising.
After all, among Dongcheng’s elite, who didn’t know about Wei Yixian’s lingering affection for his white moonlight?
There were even whispers that Shang Shiqian’s death eight years ago had been orchestrated by Wei Yixian.
Wei Yixian: That Caged Canary is your own sister.
Shang Shidai: Heh. Didn’t see that coming, did you?
Shang Shidai: …
