- Chapter 17 - Resonance
Shang Shiqian’s fragile psyche had been assaulted three times in rapid succession.
She was utterly bewildered.
Wei Yixian’s mental state had never been particularly stable to begin with, but had last night’s stimulation pushed her completely over the edge?
The fact that she had volunteered to take Shang Shiqian to East City University was already bizarre enough, but this sudden surge in Love Points was nothing short of horrifying.
It wasn’t just Shang Shiqian who was stunned even Wei Yixian, the one who had contributed those Love Points, froze momentarily.
Regaining her composure swiftly, Wei Yixian maintained her usual detached expression. “What are you spacing out for?”
Shang Shiqian quickly shook her head. “Just, a little overwhelmed by your kindness.”
Wei Yixian merely gave her a deep, inscrutable look and said nothing more.
As Shang Shiqian sat down to eat breakfast, she frantically prodded the system in her mind: Why did the Love Points suddenly increase?
Perhaps fueled by the Love Points, the system was now lively and energetic, its AI voice practically vibrating with excitement:
[The female lead took the initiative to offer you a ride!]
Shang Shiqian: ?
That’s it?
Shang Shiqian didn’t understand and was thoroughly baffled: Just because she offered to drive me?
[Yep!]
[But she’s just going the same way, isn’t she? What does that have to do with love?]
The system explained: [Isn’t the measure of whether someone loves another person based on what they do for them?]
Shang Shiqian opened her mouth, then closed it.
That sounded logical, but something about it felt off.
She asked, By that logic, if she voluntarily does a hundred things for me, wouldn’t the Love Points max out instantly?
She was already considering the feasibility of hiring Wei Yixian to run errands for her just to farm Love Points.
The system retorted: [Love Points can’t be maxed out that easily! This time, it’s because she took that first step, it’s a breakthrough. Future rides won’t earn you any more Love Points, so don’t think you can exploit some loophole. For other things, she has to do them willingly.]
Perhaps realizing how demoralizing this sounded for her mission, the system added encouragingly: [But think about it, if she’s willing to do so much for you, doesn’t that prove her love?]
Shang Shiqian: “…”
Wei Yixian: “…”
Flawless logic. √
At this moment, in some strange way, their hearts resonated.
What slightly reassured Shang Shiqian was that Wei Yixian hadn’t actually lost her mind.
The system continued its pep talk: [Just do your best. If you’re really lost, I have a few guides for you, How to Rapidly Heat Up Romance in an Enclosed Car Space, These Car Activities Will Steal Her Heart, Clever Women’s Must-Learn Driving Techniques, Veteran Driver’s Strong Recommendation: A Beginner’s Guide to the Fast Lane…]
Shang Shiqian: …Again with this?
–
Before leaving, Wei Yixian instructed Shang Shiqian to change her outfit.
She could no longer tolerate Shang Shiqian wearing the same clothes every day.
The maid, Pu Feifei, enthusiastically volunteered to help Shang Shiqian pick an outfit.
And so, Shang Shiqian was treated like a doll, trying on multiple sets of clothes.
Only after she donned a mint-green, waist-cinched, wide-shouldered sleeveless blouse layered over a tank top, paired with cargo shorts, did Pu Feifei reluctantly say, “We can’t keep President Wei waiting any longer. Let’s go with this for today!”
Shang Shiqian asked, “Sister Pu, have you been wanting to do this for a while now?”
Pu Feifei grinned. “Wouldn’t it be a shame to let all these beautiful clothes go unworn?”
The clothes prepared for guests were not something Wei Yixian would wear, and the maids weren’t allowed to wear them either.
After finally having a guest, Shang Shiqian had been wearing her own clothes when going out these past few days.
Pu Feifei had been quite regretful that these clothes would be reclaimed after half a month, but now they could finally be put to good use.
Shang Shiqian wasn’t particular about outfits her casual wear prioritized comfort, while her formal attire for important events was always overseen by her family and stylists, so she never had to worry about it.
But from now on, there would be no more family or stylists to handle it for her.
She asked Pu Feifei, “Sister Pu, can I learn how to dress from you?”
This was the most direct recognition of Pu Feifei’s taste. Delighted, Pu Feifei replied, “It would be my honor.”
Sensing the tense atmosphere in the car, the driver nervously glanced at the rearview mirror and said, “President Wei, I’ll go hurry Miss Shang along.”
Wei Yixian leaned back with her eyes closed, but the rhythmic tapping of her fingers against the armrest betrayed her impatience.
She gave a faint “Mm.”
The next second, Shang Shiqian walked out wearing a bucket hat.
Pu Feifei stood at the doorway, waving goodbye to her.
The driver quickly got out to open the door for Shang Shiqian, gesturing for her to get in.
Only when she heard the rustling of the seat beside her did Wei Yixian lift her eyelids to glance at Shang Shiqian.
Their gazes met.
Wei Yixian looked away. “What are you staring at?”
Shang Shiqian asked, “Did Sister Pu pick out your outfit too?”
Wei Yixian: “No.”
“You chose it yourself? Wow, you have great taste!”
Finding her chatter grating, Wei Yixian took a mask from the storage compartment in the armrest and handed it to her.
“Put this on.”
After Shang Shiqian complied, Wei Yixian seemed to remember something and instructed the driver to hand over the phone kept in the car.
“For me?”
Wei Yixian replied indifferently, “It has the driver and the life assistant’s numbers. Contact them directly if you need anything.”
“Thank you.” Shang Shiqian opened the contacts list, there really were only two numbers saved.
She asked again, “Don’t you have your number in here?”
“I said, contact them if you need something.” Wei Yixian closed her eyes, signaling the end of the conversation.
Left with no choice, Shang Shiqian fiddled with the phone on her own.
When she had played with the tablet earlier, she’d already noticed how much electronic devices had evolved.
After eight years, smartphones seemed to have changed even more, with many new functions and apps she didn’t recognize.
Since Wei Yixian wouldn’t waste time explaining these features to her, she decided to register a WeChat account to make it easier to contact Chen Yixun whenever needed.
While Shang Shiqian was absorbed in exploring the phone, Wei Yixian quietly opened her eyes and observed her for a moment.
Wei Yixian couldn’t understand why she had entertained such an absurd thought the other night.
How could “Shang Shiyu” possibly be Shang Shiqian, back from the dead?
Though she hadn’t spent much time with Shang Shiqian, she knew Shang Shiqian wasn’t particularly attached to electronics, she would never cling to a phone in the car like “Shang Shiyu” was doing now.
Shang Shiqian avoided using her phone in the car not just because she preferred playing chess in her head, but also for a lesser-known reason.
She got motion sickness if she used her phone in the car.
Just then, Shang Shiqian put the phone away, pressed a fist against her stomach, and leaned her head back against the seat, closing her eyes to rest.
Wei Yixian: “……”
It had to be a coincidence.
–
The car soon arrived near the east gate of East City University.
It was currently the pre-class period, with many students walking from the dorms toward the teaching areas.
Chen Yixun had also arranged to meet Shang Shiqian at this time and was already waiting at the gate.
She kept glancing toward the nearby bus stop when someone suddenly tapped her shoulder.
“Chen Yixun, morning.”
Chen turned her head.
Though the other person was fully covered and wearing different clothes, the familiar eyes and upright posture were unmistakable.
“Shang Shiyu? How did you…”
Shang Shiqian removed her mask, slightly puzzled: “Hmm?”
Chen Yixun looked her up and down, eyes flashing with admiration: “Why the outfit change?”
Shiqian countered: “Doesn’t this look good? A sister spent considerable effort putting this together for me.”
Chen Yixun was torn between laughter and tears: “It’s not that it’s bad… Never mind, let’s go in!”
“Oh, we can add each other as friends now.” Shiqian waved her phone.
Chen Yixun hesitated before asking: “Did you find money or something?”
“I’ve found some before, but not recently,” Shiqian replied.
Chen Yixun: ?
After teasing her, Shiqian explained: “This phone isn’t mine, someone lent it to me.”
Chen Yixun grasped her hand earnestly: “If you’re in trouble, come to me. I’ll help however I can. Promise me you won’t be easily tricked into doing anything harmful.”
Shiqian seemed so naive that Chen couldn’t help worrying.
Shiqian’s eyes curved: “You’ve already helped me tremendously. As for being tricked, don’t worry, that’s not happening. She’s practically family, and a good person.”
Inside the understated luxury car, Wei Yixian’s gaze pierced through the tinted window, settling on Shang Shiqian’s clasped hand.
A phone ringtone snapped her attention back as she coldly ordered: “Back to the company.”
The vehicle soon departed from the vibrant university.
Mini Theater:
