The Cannon Fodder Became the Empire's Beloved Omega - Chapter 7
The other person seemed to have spotted him from afar, a faint smile already playing on his lips. “Good morning, Yu Ruan.”
Yu Ruan was pleasantly surprised by the coincidence. He greeted Ye Yizhou and handed over the insulated container in his hand, a little sheepishly saying, “Professor Ye, these are some desserts I made. I wasn’t sure what you’d like, so I made something a bit unconventional. Please give it a try, and if it doesn’t suit your taste, just let me know, I can make something else for you.”
Ye Yizhou took the container, opened the lid, and glanced inside.
A transparent glass bowl was neatly sealed, revealing a jelly-like substance soaked in thick syrup. Scattered osmanthus petals dotted the mixture, making it look incredibly appetizing.
It truly was a dessert he had never seen before.
Ye Yizhou raised his eyes in mild surprise, his brow slightly arched.
Noticing his expression, Yu Ruan quickly explained, “I learned this from someone I used to know. He said it’s a traditional snack from his hometown called bingfen (ice jelly). It might look a bit plain, but it tastes quite good.”
He instinctively glanced at Gu Yu beside him.
“Probably.”
For some reason, he felt the other’s mood had soured even further.
Sensing Yu Ruan’s gaze, Gu Yu lifted his eyelids and met Ye Yizhou’s eyes briefly before reluctantly uttering an “Mm.”
It sounded utterly perfunctory.
Seeing this reaction, Yu Ruan couldn’t help but worry whether the bingfen would actually suit Ye Yizhou’s taste.
Maybe the young master had just been too polite to refuse yesterday?
Yu Ruan’s heart grew uneasy.
Unexpectedly, Gu Yu’s gaze swept over him, and after a few seconds, he added, “It’s passable. You can give it a try.”
The latter part was directed at Ye Yizhou.
Hearing this, Ye Yizhou’s expression shifted subtly.
Something flickered in his eyes before he closed the container lid and smiled gently at Yu Ruan. “Thank you. I’ll try it when I get back. Don’t worry it looks very appealing.”
Yu Ruan nodded.
Ye Yizhou then turned to the other. “This student seems unfamiliar. Are you a new transfer?”
Gu Yu, now addressed, remained silent. He coolly raised his lashes, his dark blue eyes fixed unwaveringly on Ye Yizhou, as if an undercurrent of tension simmered between them.
Somehow, Yu Ruan felt the atmosphere had grown somewhat dangerous.
It was very much like a clash between a rebellious troublemaker and a patient, well-meaning teacher.
He glanced at Gu Yu’s sullen face, then at Ye Yizhou’s amiable demeanor. After a moment’s thought, he said to Ye Yizhou, “Professor Ye, today is his first day at our school. I was just about to take him to see you.”
At this, both of them turned to look at him.
Yu Ruan bowed slightly to Ye Yizhou. “I’ll leave Gu Yu in your care.” Then he turned to Gu Yu. “Young mas, I mean, Gu Yu, Professor Ye is very kind and approachable. I hope you two get along well!”
Ye Yizhou & Gu Yu: “?”
Ye Yizhou looked at Yu Ruan with a faint, enigmatic smile but said nothing.
Feeling he had accomplished his mission, Yu Ruan was in high spirits. He thought to himself: My luck isn’t great. If I were to personally show Gu Yu around the campus, who knows what might happen?
It’s better to hand him over to Ye Yizhou nothing will go wrong for sure.
He watched Ye Yizhou anxiously. After a long while, the other man gave a slight nod of his chin and said to him, “Alright.”
Yu Ruan immediately felt relieved.
He said to Gu Yu, “I hope you enjoy your time at Xinle Academy!”
After that, he bid farewell to Ye Yizhou, “Professor Ye, I’ll head back to class now.”
Ye Yizhou gave him a slight nod and said, “Go ahead.” His gaze, carrying a hint of a teasing smile, shifted to Gu Yu, and he added with a light laugh, “I’ll ‘take good care’ of the new student.”
For some reason, Yu Ruan felt there was more to Ye Yizhou’s words than met the ear.
He pondered for a few seconds but couldn’t figure out the underlying meaning. He could only regretfully conclude that this was probably just the way elite upper-class people spoke.
As an ordinary person, he couldn’t understand it.
Once he came to this realization, Yu Ruan instantly felt at ease. He bowed to Ye Yizhou once more as a farewell, completely missing the subtle expression on Gu Yu’s face, and cheerfully headed toward the teaching building.
Today’s coursework wasn’t heavy, and if nothing unexpected happened, he’d likely be able to go home early.
Yesterday’s recording had completely twisted the plot into a mess. Yu Ruan had no idea what would happen next and could only take things one step at a time. Considering his future living expenses, he wondered if he should try to get back the part-time jobs he had previously quit.
Although the dean had made grand promises, hinting that the school would pay him a lot of money in the future, Yu Ruan didn’t know when the protagonist might kick him out of the school. By the time that happened, it would be too late to start saving.
One must prepare for a rainy day.
As Yu Ruan was mulling over this, a faint, familiar scent of lime suddenly drifted toward him.
He instinctively glanced beside him and realized that Gu Yu had somehow caught up with him. The tall, slender young master kept his eyes lowered, exuding an aura that kept others at a distance. His lashes drooped listlessly, and his lips were pressed tightly together.
Yu Ruan couldn’t help but feel puzzled: What’s wrong with him?
Why does he seem even more upset than before?
He thought for a moment and figured it might be because the young master rarely woke up early and wasn’t used to such hardship, which explained why his bad mood had persisted until now.
Recalling that at this time in the past, Gu Yu would always be buried in sleep, feeling utterly miserable seemed quite normal.
With this in mind, Yu Ruan stopped walking and pulled a thermos from his bag.
Inside was the sour plum drink he had brewed yesterday, which had been chilled in the fridge overnight. However, after sitting at room temperature for so long, it was no longer cold and wouldn’t irritate the stomach.
Gu Yu looked down at him, his dark blue eyes concealing some unreadable emotion.
Yu Ruan skillfully poured him a cup. “Would you like to try it?”
Generally, people with morning irritability also tended to have low blood sugar. Although the sour plum drink tasted tart, it actually contained quite a bit of specially made rock sugar, which could help alleviate the discomfort caused by a lack of sugar.
It was better than nothing, at least.
Gu Yu stared at the pale fingers extended toward him but didn’t take the cup immediately.
“Your cup?” he asked indifferently.
Hearing this, Yu Ruan suddenly remembered that the person in front of him was a young master born with a silver spoon in his mouth. It was entirely possible that he had serious germaphobia.
Offering him a cup that he himself had used seemed a bit impolite.
“…” Yu Ruan nodded regretfully.
Was it too late to take the sour plum drink back now?
He was so afraid of being kicked out by Young Master Gu and ending up homeless on the streets. QAQ
So pitiful.
To his surprise, Gu Yu didn’t say anything. He simply took the cup from Yu Ruan’s hand, his Adam’s apple bobbing slightly as he took a small sip.
The sweet and tangy flavor spread across his tongue, carrying a faint hint of coolness. It quickly soothed the lingering restlessness in his heart.
Gu Yu lowered his gaze and tilted his head back, finishing the rest in one go. His dark hair fluttered under the sunlight, appearing almost translucent. The sight of him drinking like this attracted the attention of several passing students, who stopped to watch.
And then, they noticed Yu Ruan standing beside him.
For a moment, everyone’s emotions were complicated.
Yesterday’s incident hadn’t spread widely yet, so when people saw Yu Ruan, their first reaction was still one of instinctive disgust.
Now, seeing the widely disliked Yu Ruan standing so harmoniously next to such a handsome, unfamiliar Alpha, they couldn’t help but feel even more repulsed.
Whispers gradually rose around them. A few with a strong sense of justice, captivated by Gu Yu’s appearance, were itching to approach him and inform him of Yu Ruan’s “dark history.”
After finishing the entire drink, Gu Yu’s expression finally cleared up.
Though he still looked somewhat lazy, he had softened considerably. He wiped the cup briefly and handed it back to Yu Ruan. “Thanks.”
“You’re welcome,” Yu Ruan quickly replied.
He put the cup away and asked, “Aren’t you going with Professor Ye?”
“No need,” Gu Yu said. “Ye Yizhou has already taken care of things. Let’s go.”
Yu Ruan stared at him blankly, not understanding what he meant by “taken care of.”
But he could grasp the latter part of the sentence.
So, he and Gu Yu were actually in the same class?
No wonder Gu Yu had dragged him along to show the way this morning.
Yu Ruan finally understood why the young master had been acting so unusually today. He nodded in realization and said, “Okay,” preparing to lead Gu Yu to the classroom.
Just then, someone suddenly rushed over energetically and slapped him on the shoulder.
Although the force wasn’t strong, Yu Ruan’s delicate Omega physique reacted immediately. He quietly adjusted his collar to cover the faint red mark left by the slap.
He looked up and recognized the person as Yu Fei.
Yu Fei seemed completely unaware, cheerfully saying to him, “Yu Ruan, have you seen it? The school’s disciplinary notice for Ji Huai has been posted on the bulletin board!”
“I heard he has to read a self-written apology letter in front of the whole school during the morning assembly! Hahaha, you should’ve seen Ji Huai’s expression. Hahaha, it’s killing me! So satisfying!”
His words cut off abruptly.
Gu Yu grabbed Yu Fei’s hand and moved it away from Yu Ruan’s shoulder. His face, pale under the sunlight, showed no emotion, but his grip was so tight it nearly distorted Yu Fei’s expression.
“Ouch, ouch, ouch!”
Yu Fei let out a pained cry, almost tearing up:
Who is this guy???
How come, in just half a day, Yu Ruan had gotten to know another Alpha??? And such a violent one at that???
Gu Yu shot him a sidelong glance. “Don’t touch him randomly.”
Yu Fei instinctively looked at Yu Ruan, hoping he would help him out.
But Yu Ruan was still stunned by the news of Ji Huai’s punishment. ???
Had he heard that right???
Who got punished?? Ji Huai??
Yu Ruan was completely bewildered.
This plot development isn’t right??!!!
He glanced at Yu Fei, then at Gu Yu who was gripping Yu Fei’s hand, and only then did he belatedly react, quickly rescuing Yu Fei from Gu Yu’s grasp.
Gu Yu studied him carefully for a moment before lazily withdrawing his hand.
Yu Ruan still felt a bit dazed. He really couldn’t figure out why Ji Huai, who was supposed to be dominating the scene, had suddenly stumbled here.
And fallen so hard at that?
