The Bride of The Mysterious Ghost King - Chapter 1
My name is Mo Xiaoran, and I am a taxi driver. Female drivers are rare these days, but I have to bow to the necessities of life.
Because my ex-boyfriend cheated on me, I got drunk and was caught by the police. That wasn’t the worst of it. The worst was that these heartless police officers actually ordered me to work in the morgue, wiping down dead bodies, as punishment for not cherishing my life!
The morgue was filled with a chilling cold, and everything around exuded a sense of oppression and eeriness. The dim, flickering light seemed to perfectly complement the current scene.
The next second, the police officer who brought me here tossed me a gray cloth. “If you want to stay till midnight, after the on-duty staff have gone to sleep, you can take your time wiping them all down alone.”
“…Officers, can I discuss something with you?” I forced a smile and looked at the two with a pleading tone.
“…” The two police officers exchanged a glance, both frowning.
“C-Can I just wipe one corpse? Officers, look how young I am. How can you bear to make me wipe so many?” I put on a tearful, innocent face and held up one index finger.
“Heh heh.” The dark, skinny police officer suddenly let out a dry laugh, which sounded very abrupt. “Little girl, you’re quite pretty.” He suddenly changed from his previous stern demeanor and gave me a strange smile.
I raised an eyebrow suspiciously. “Where am I pretty?”
“Wishful thinking.” After saying that, the rotten police officer stared at me with a face full of black lines.
Hmph! Charcoal, what’s there to be so cocky about? Get a life!
“Wuuu…”
Why am I so unlucky? I just turned eighteen this year, and no matter what, I’m a beautiful girl, fresh as a flower. Yet they want me to wipe these rotting corpses?
I don’t have a residence permit or ID, and I have a dad who’s only ten years older than me. He’s a tomb raider, that’s his profession.
I was very afraid and wanted to leave this place. I stood there listlessly by the corpse table, not daring to look directly at those mutilated, terrifying faces. It was as if those rotting corpses could swallow me whole at any moment, choking my fragile soul.
“Make it quick, girl. Don’t slack off, or your driver’s license will be gone for nothing.” The sturdy police officer pointed outside the door before leaving, signaling that they would be watching me from the doorway.
As soon as they left, the temperature in the morgue seemed to drop sharply, and the light grew dim. Because it was summer, the rotting corpses on the tables gave off a foul odor.
There was a corpse covered in lividity spots lying on the table. I reluctantly picked up the rag.
Suddenly, the fluorescent light on the ceiling swayed. It was swinging without any wind, illuminating the male corpse in a pale, eerie light.
“Ah.” I was scared and took a step back, hitting the freezer with a loud, grating bang.
“Heh heh.”
An inexplicable soft laugh sounded in the air, giving me a huge fright!
Who was laughing?
My heart dropped. It was just me and the corpses here. Could it be…
Feeling a shadow cast over my head, I mechanically looked up and nearly had a heart attack.
A tall man, dressed in a pure white casual shirt, with the unbuttoned collar slightly crumpled, revealing his fair collarbones. His eyes were deep like spring water, his nose bridge high, his thin lips tightly pressed, and his sharply defined features looked as if they were drawn.
This man was standing on top of the No. 2 freezer cabinet, looking down at me faintly. A hint of a smile, there and not there, played on his lips.
“Ghost…” Seeing the man’s long fringe floating without wind, I immediately knelt down. “Male God, I’ll burn you two voluptuous, well-endowed beauties, please let me go!”
Thump thump thump…
Suppressing my wildly beating heart, I resolutely abandoned my dignity, quickly moved my agile and adorable little legs, clasped my hands together, raised my face at a 45-degree angle, and pleaded with him with eyes looking up at a heavenly deity.
What’s dignity worth, anyway? Even if it shatters all over the floor, I have to sweep it up decisively.
The police officers outside heard the commotion and ran in. Seeing me kneeling on the ground, the one with the dark face yelled at me, “Do you not want to leave?”
“I…” I frantically pointed at the man. “There’s a ghost! There’s a ghost standing up there! Hurry up and shoot him!” I stood up excitedly and, with a sudden burst of courage, dragged one of the police guys toward the No. 2 freezer cabinet.
That police guy followed my line of sight and looked up, scanning the tops of all the freezer cabinets. When he looked back at me, his face was ashen, and his mouth twitched. “You dare to fool the police?”
The guy suddenly had a police baton in his hand. My eyes widened, and I repeatedly waved my hands. “I didn’t lie to you! There really is a ghost up there! Look closely again, he’s standing right there!” I was so excited I nearly pointed my finger straight to the sky.
The man coldly looked down at everything happening below, and shrugged at me.
If this wasn’t a ghost, what was it? My mouth hung open into an ‘o’.
“Where’s the ghost? Girl, if you mess around and don’t cooperate again, don’t blame us for getting tough.” The sturdy police officer walked over, raised his police baton, and was about to hit me. I screamed and curled up on the floor, nearly rolling into a ball.
“Don’t hit me, I’ll wipe, I’ll wipe.” I hugged my head like a criminal.
