The Blind Alpha Coveted by the Frail Beauty Omega - Chapter 8
Tasked to Hurt Mi Ruian
The cannon fodder Alpha and her roommate didn’t spend much time together. According to the script, their occasional encounters only happened during commuting hours. But now that Wei Jiangxue had arrived and changed her job to web streaming, it became even harder to run into Mi Ruian.
[System 233: Actually, this isn’t bad. Usually, when encountering the protagonist, the small world might suddenly issue random tasks. Of course, they come with extra rewards. You can decide for yourself whether to do them or not. The difficulty varies—some hosts like to take risks, while others choose to play it safe. Just be careful not to mess up.]
Wei Jiangxue was a bit curious about these random tasks, but considering she wasn’t even 100% sure she could pass the main storyline tasks yet, she temporarily set aside the idea of wandering around in front of Mi Ruian.
“I’ll think about whether to do random tasks later when I have more capability.”
Wei Jiangxue quickly figured it out. The cannon fodder Alpha was expected to exit the stage in six months. If she could endure these six months, she could return to her family. 233 said that if she was interested later, she could continue working for the Transmigration Bureau. There would be every worldly treasure Wei Jiangxue could imagine; as long as she completed the tasks, there was no material reward she couldn’t obtain.
The actual task process was simpler than Wei Jiangxue had imagined, but the rewards promised by the system and the Bureau were so generous that she couldn’t help but doubt the true difficulty. Maybe the system was lying? Did the protagonist Mi Ruian have more secrets? Would subsequent tasks become increasingly difficult?
System 233 appeared enthusiastic and sincere, but Wei Jiangxue never dared to truly trust it or the Transmigration Bureau.
A life of poverty had made Wei Jiangxue accustomed to planning for a rainy day. She felt that if the system was a figment of her imagination or specifically designed to deceive her, she had to face this new world and new life that she couldn’t observe with her eyes.
So, while the system was still there, Wei Jiangxue suggested that she go out and experience the world alone, using the excuse that she needed to prepare early in case she had to go out for tasks later.
233 thought for a moment and deemed it feasible. It didn’t want Wei Jiangxue to stay cooped up at home all the time; there was always a sense of fragility about this blind human. Going out for some fresh air would be good for her mood. It had heard that humans who encountered disasters were prone to PTSD and getting stuck in past pain.
233 didn’t want Wei Jiangxue to be left behind. Although she was blind, with the help of the Bureau, she would eventually recover. In the interval of waiting for recovery, what Wei Jiangxue needed to do was find the courage and passion to face life.
[How about going to the supermarket today? There are many people there, and the salesclerks can answer your questions promptly. I’ll be watching over you too. You’ve been eating instant noodles for so many days and you don’t like takeout; you’ll get malnourished if this continues.]
Wei Jiangxue propped up her chin and thought: “Okay, I can buy some other convenient foods, or vegetables and fruits that just need washing.”
System 233 said with relief: [That’s great. You tell me first, I’ll make a list, and then we’ll go shopping.]
Just as she was heading out, Wei Jiangxue bumped into Mi Ruian, who had suddenly returned.
The usual rose fragrance suddenly became much sweeter today, and Wei Jiangxue couldn’t help but sniff deeply; there was a faint smell of blood mixed in.
“You’re injured,” Wei Jiangxue said with certainty.
“I bumped my hand against the railing coming up; a piece of skin was scraped off by some rust.”
The actual situation was more serious than what Mi Ruian said. She had been slashed by the pickpocket who stole Wei Jiangxue’s phone a few days ago. She had already dealt with the guy and treated the wound, so it wasn’t a big deal. Mi Ruian herself couldn’t even smell the blood, yet Wei Jiangxue had discovered she was hurt.
How strange. Both Omega and Alpha blood contain pheromones. If she hadn’t been concerned about Wei Jiangxue’s presence in the rental house and worried that her pheromones would make this Alpha act unseemly, Mi Ruian certainly wouldn’t have risked going to a clinic for treatment.
But now, the treatment seemed useless; the other party had smelled it anyway.
The fact that her pheromones had absolutely no effect on Wei Jiangxue was the thing Mi Ruian cared about most.
Why? Her eyes were searching as she stared at Wei Jiangxue’s empty, hollow eyes.
Wei Jiangxue couldn’t see Mi Ruian looking her up and down. After getting Mi Ruian’s answer, she stopped her pace, turned around, and went back into the living room.
Mi Ruian followed her into the room and, seeing that she wasn’t going out, closed the door.
Perhaps Wei Jiangxue hadn’t noticed while dressing this morning, but she was still wearing Mi Ruian’s sweater.
The rose scent twined around her in silken threads. As Mi Ruian caught the scent, the emotions in her eyes deepened.
As for the missing ring, Mi Ruian had long seen on the surveillance footage that Wei Jiangxue had secretly returned it. As for the clothes, Wei Jiangxue was probably caught in a difficult position and intended to find a better time to return them, but then forgot because she was busy.
Mi Ruian leaned against the door, continuing to observe Wei Jiangxue. She saw her rummaging through the living room cabinets and eventually pulling out a first-aid kit.
The latter didn’t know Mi Ruian’s position, so she was speaking to thin air again.
“The first-aid kit is here. Deal with it yourself.”
After completing the “task,” Wei Jiangxue stood up, leaning on her blind cane, ready to head out.
“So you were looking for the first-aid kit. Thanks for the concern, but I’ve already bandaged it.” Even knowing she couldn’t see, Mi Ruian still waved her bandaged hand in front of Wei Jiangxue. “Where are you going?”
The blunt question made Wei Jiangxue freeze. They were just roommates; there was no need to report her itinerary.
But 233 spoke up: [Ask the protagonist if she’s going. If she goes, you’ll have an assistant to help carry things. I just saw—it’s her left hand that’s injured, and it’s not serious. Her right hand is fine.]
233 was very shrewd; it even explained Mi Ruian’s injury to Wei Jiangxue. Since the task was to bully the protagonist, this could count as a bit of task progress.
Besides, if Mi Ruian went too, it could take more videos and photos of them together!
That’s right, might as well take advantage of the situation. Wei Jiangxue was completely unaware of 233’s ulterior motives.
But their goals aligned. Thinking she could increase some task points, Wei Jiangxue said to Mi Ruian: “I’m planning to go to the supermarket to buy things. Want to come along? If your injury isn’t too heavy.”
“Sure,” Mi Ruian agreed readily, even voicing Wei Jiangxue’s inner thoughts. “I can also help you carry things so you only have to focus on walking.”
In the supermarket, Wei Jiangxue clutched the corner of Mi Ruian’s shirt, her head lowered in thought. How exactly had she been persuaded to put down her blind cane and follow Mi Ruian step by step?
“Careful, there’s someone next to you. Don’t let go of me.” Mi Ruian turned her head and took Wei Jiangxue’s hand, pulling her closer to avoid a shopping cart being pushed on the other side.
“Mommy, why is that big sister wearing sunglasses indoors?” A little girl sitting in a shopping cart was very excited, wanting to tell her mom everything she saw.
Under Mi Ruian’s gaze, the adult covered the little girl’s mouth, but found it difficult to explain the existence of blind people to a child that age. She could only fudge it: “Shh, maybe the big sister just likes sunglasses. Don’t you always clamor to wear your bow when we go out?”
Mi Ruian noticed her shirt being tugged. Turning back, she saw Wei Jiangxue’s long eyelashes fluttering, her eyes unable to find a focus: “Is it strange to wear sunglasses indoors?”
“Not strange. That child is just too young. You look very pretty in sunglasses.” Mi Ruian was telling the truth; if Wei Jiangxue’s face weren’t so eye-catching, the child would likely have been more easily attracted to the snacks on the shelves.
Wei Jiangxue’s lips curved slightly, her cheeks flushing pink. Out of embarrassment, she changed the subject: “I want to find oatmeal and yogurt. Where are they?”
“Follow me.” Mi Ruian walked slowly, turning back from time to time to see if Wei Jiangxue had gotten lost.
Wei Jiangxue focused intently on pinching Mi Ruian’s clothes, chatting idly with System 233 in her mind.
Suddenly, the notification for a task sounded—
[System 233: Random Task: Intentionally bump into the protagonist’s injured arm…] [Task Reward: Twelve hours of sight.]
Wei Jiangxue froze. Mi Ruian, sensing she had let go again, turned back patiently: “Let’s hold hands instead this time. Don’t wander off.”
But Wei Jiangxue couldn’t listen to what Mi Ruian was saying at all. She was urgently confirming the task reward with System 233.
“Twelve hours of sight.”
What did that mean? Wei Jiangxue’s brain stalled. Did it mean she could see the world again? But with a time limit—only for half a day.
[Yes,] 233 confirmed her interpretation. [I highly recommend the host do it. This kind of task reward is rare.]
Wei Jiangxue hesitated.
This random task required her to hurt Mi Ruian. Although it was just a bump to the injured arm, no matter how she thought about it, it was inappropriate.
The usual minor squabbles, a bit of bickering, or stealing something were within Wei Jiangxue’s range of acceptance.
But this kind of direct physical harm was something Wei Jiangxue couldn’t bring herself to do.
233 understood the conflict in her heart: [If you don’t want to do it, it’s fine. Anyway, this task and reward will automatically disappear after 24 hours. It will refresh later, and you don’t have to worry about encountering the same task again.]
Wei Jiangxue nodded: “I won’t do it…”
“Won’t do what? Don’t want to hold my hand?” Mi Ruian’s voice sounded, and she simultaneously took hold of Wei Jiangxue’s hand.
“No, that’s not it…” Wei Jiangxue was startled.
“Then you do want to hold my hand.” Mi Ruian gently shook the hand she was holding. “Don’t let go again this time, or it’ll be hard to find you if you get lost.”
Wei Jiangxue felt dizzy and confused. She couldn’t understand the current situation—she hadn’t intended to hold hands with Mi Ruian.
But saying it out loud now would likely only make things awkward for both of them, so Wei Jiangxue silently swallowed her refusal.
An unavoidable warm sensation came from Mi Ruian’s hand, bringing a few traces of warmth to Wei Jiangxue’s cold fingers, making her heart feel warm as well.
While listening to the other woman softly ask which brand of oatmeal she wanted, Wei Jiangxue felt a wave of relief in her heart—
Thankfully, she hadn’t chosen to complete that task just now.
