Chapter 4: When a “Phoenix Woman” Turns Good
Lu Yuan stood up following Yun Jiang’s lead, saying thoughtfully, “Why don’t I get you a car?”
As if remembering something, Lu Yuan quickly corrected herself: “Ah, no, I mean… the company provides cars for employees. You just need to go and register for one.”
Yun Jiang lowered her eyes, quietly watching her correct herself several times. Her tone was stiff, and her guilty little eyes darted around, unable to find a place to land.
Clearly, she was someone who wasn’t good at lying, yet she was pushing herself, racking her brain to earn the other’s trust. As she spoke, her long eyelashes trembled slightly, like butterflies resting on flower petals, their wings fluttering.
There was a sudden, fragile beauty to her; she was quite cute.
Yun Jiang had to force herself not to laugh out loud. Just how innocent must her personality be to feel so uncomfortable telling even a white lie?
As if worried Yun Jiang wouldn’t believe her, Lu Yuan asked back, “Didn’t the person in charge discuss this with you?”
With that serious little expression, it seemed that if Yun Jiang so much as nodded, Lu Yuan would immediately make a phone call to hold someone accountable.
Yun Jiang: “……”
Hearing this, Yun Jiang’s feelings became even more complex. She really wanted to say to Lu Yuan: Good girl, why go to such lengths?
She was only the original host’s girlfriend, not a biological mother who had to arrange every detail. Being too overprotective would only turn this relationship into something extreme.
She shook her head and dropped the subject, using a bit of strength to pull the girl up. “Stand up before you speak. You’re a bit anemic; you shouldn’t squat for too long, it’ll make you dizzy.”
Lu Yuan’s expression became apprehensive. She took a few steps as she was pulled by her forearm, unable to gauge what Yun Jiang was actually thinking.
Because of a moment’s hesitation, Yun Jiang’s palm, which was lightly supporting her forearm, slid down. Her thumb brushed against Lu Yuan’s left wrist, pushing aside the matching silk ribbon tied there and revealing a section of snowy-white wrist.
“Even if the company approves a car, I can’t drive it. I don’t have a license. Surely I can’t ask the company to approve a driver, too?” Yun Jiang turned back and smiled, her tone carrying a light, teasing quality.
Confirming that Yun Jiang wasn’t angry, Lu Yuan breathed a sigh of relief. “Then you should find some time to get your license. Driving is much more convenient in this heat, and we could go on road trips later. Besides, once you graduate and get busy with work, you’ll have even less time to take the test.”
These words sounded a bit “Let them eat cake,” but from her perspective, it was just a common, everyday matter.
“Sure, I’ll go when I have time.” Yun Jiang’s downward gaze suddenly froze, her eyes landing on the skin beneath the ribbon.
On the wrist was a hideous scar, lying across it like an ugly centipede. The wound was old, the stitch marks clearly visible—it didn’t look like a recent injury. It slammed into Yun Jiang’s vision, making her heart skip a beat.
This scene had never appeared in the original host’s memories. In her eyes, Lu Yuan’s left wrist always bore different accessories—watches or several strands of bracelets—all hugging the skin tightly to hide the mark.
Occasionally, if someone touched the jewelry on her hand, Lu Yuan would react strongly. The original host thought she just didn’t want her touching expensive items and had sulked about it for a long while.
When going on stage, Lu Yuan would hide in a corner to apply makeup to her hand. She always appeared perfectly before others, wearing a radiant smile. Everyone’s impression of Lu Yuan was that of a cheerful, gentle, and talented music student.
Previously, Yun Jiang thought it was hand cream; now it was clear it was concealer to cover the scar. Even if she were caught on camera by accident, the scar wouldn’t be clearly visible for people to gossip about.
Lu Yuan, still talking, was oblivious until she noticed Yun Jiang had been silent for too long. She realized her wristband had loosened, exposing a glaring section of the scar.
The smile on Lu Yuan’s face vanished instantly, turning pale. She hurriedly tried to pull the ribbon back. The silk was slippery, and because her movements were too frantic, she actually loosened it further. It hung there precariously, unable to stay tied.
“Let me,” Yun Jiang said. She looked up at Lu Yuan with a serious expression. “You can’t tie a good knot with one hand. I’ll tie it back for you.”
“……” Lu Yuan’s trembling hand paused. She looked up abruptly, her clear, watery eyes meeting Yun Jiang’s.
Yun Jiang’s gaze was calm. There was none of the pity or strangeness she feared. She was simply making a sincere suggestion that Lu Yuan couldn’t refuse.
After a moment of silence, Lu Yuan dropped her usual defensive attitude and extended her hand.
Yun Jiang pulled her to sit on the small sofa while she sat on an armchair, resting Lu Yuan’s hand on her own knee. With a gentle pull, the dreamy, misty blue ribbon was unwound, revealing the scar in its entirety.
Yun Jiang straightened the silk, laid it back over the scar, and with a wrap and a twist, tied a perfect bow on the back of the hand.
Due to the indoor air conditioning, Yun Jiang’s fingers were a bit cool. Every time they touched the inner skin of her wrist, Lu Yuan couldn’t help but tremble slightly, subconsciously holding her breath.
Lu Yuan watched her movements quietly. Seeing that the other didn’t ask questions, she lowered her eyelids, making it impossible to see the emotions in Yun Jiang’s eyes. She didn’t know what to feel.
There was relief, but also a sense of bitterness and even an unexplainable feeling of being wronged. Lu Yuan felt she was too greedy; she wanted the other to ask, yet didn’t want her to ask at the same time.
Yun Jiang adjusted the ribbon, her eyes fixed on that wrist. Her voice was very low: “That must have hurt a lot, didn’t it?”
Having been asked directly, Lu Yuan was at a loss for words. Her complex thoughts went blank; she couldn’t organize any language to answer.
Yun Jiang still didn’t look at her, her voice growing even softer: “It looks like it happened many years ago. You must have been very small. Why are you so good to me, but so cruel to yourself?”
“……”
Yun Jiang’s hands withdrew and rested on the armrests. Her fingers were long and fair, perfect in every way. Anyone who saw these hands would find it hard to believe she had struggled out of such a barren place; they would think they belonged to a girl who had never done a day’s labor in her life.
“Actually, I’m already…” Lu Yuan also withdrew her hand. The two ends of the ribbon dangled, fluttering with her movement like two light feathers falling.
Yun Jiang felt this wasn’t the right setting for a heart-to-heart—it was her birthday, after all. Just as she was about to say something to lighten the mood, she was interrupted by a voice.
“I finally found you, Yuanyuan!” A girl in a short skirt pounced over, sitting heavily next to Lu Yuan and claiming the space beside her. “How can the birthday girl hide in a corner like usual? Everyone is looking for you.”
Before Lu Yuan could react, the girl’s arm was already draped around her neck. With a slight pull, she brought Lu Yuan closer to her, acting as if they were the best of friends.
“No, let go a bit, you’re pressing on my hair.” Lu Yuan frowned, slightly pained by the squeeze. She lifted her wrist to keep the girl from rubbing against the silk ribbon.
“So what are you two doing hiding here? On a date?” The girl ignored Lu Yuan’s faint resistance and instead clung tighter. “Oh, you’ve been flying back and forth abroad for the past six months. Now that you’re finally back, I’m not letting go.”
Yun Jiang didn’t realize who it was at first, only that her face looked familiar. After a few more looks, she remembered this was a classmate from her own department named Liang Qiaoxia.
Another person she knew but wasn’t close to—and one carrying sharp hostility. She did not come in peace.
Liang Qiaoxia didn’t care about Yun Jiang’s gaze at all. She teased, “I must say, you two really have a great relationship. You’re glued together the moment you have time. We childhood friends can’t even get a chance to play with you. The moment my brother heard it was your birthday, he skipped work to come here.”
Lu Yuan paused, remembered who her brother was, and said, “Thanks.”
“It’s rare that you’re willing to hold a party for your birthday. Everyone is waiting for you, so don’t hide away for a date.” Liang Qiaoxia hung onto Lu Yuan, her smiling eyes glancing at Yun Jiang. “We old friends who grew up together are ‘borrowing’ your girlfriend for a bit. The Finance Department’s Belle wouldn’t be so stingy as to keep her all to herself, right?”
The words were nonsensical, filled with provocation and a thick “green tea” vibe. It hit Yun Jiang like a bad smell.
She immediately pulled Lu Yuan up, taking the opportunity to let her escape the other’s grip.
Yun Jiang clearly saw red marks on the side of Lu Yuan’s neck and finger marks on her other arm. She wondered what this girl grew up eating to use such brute force just to say hello.
Yun Jiang’s attitude was gentle but unquestionable: “A relationship between two people never has room for a third. I’m a jealous person, so it’s better if you don’t put Yuanyuan in a difficult position.”
Liang Qiaoxia was stunned for a moment, then reacted, her eyes widening. “That’s not what I meant! I’m telling you to let Yuanyuan out to have fun.”
Is she calling me the third wheel? Is something wrong with her head?
Yun Jiang didn’t back down, shielding the person behind her. “A gathering is just a gathering. Once Yuanyuan has rested and wants to go, she will naturally go meet her friends. What do you mean by ‘borrowing’ a girlfriend? Yuanyuan is a person, not an object.”
“No, I was just joking. Is there a need to refute me so solemnly?” Liang Qiaoxia looked speechless. “How can you be so petty? You can’t even tell it’s a joke.”
Yun Jiang nodded nonchalantly and shot back, “Yes, I am petty. I don’t know what’s good for me. That’s why I get annoyed easily when someone is impolite.”
Since the other was full of thorns, there was no need for Yun Jiang to be polite. Even if she wasn’t sure what kind of person she used to be, she certainly wasn’t going to let herself be bullied.
As if to prove Yun Jiang’s point, Liang Qiaoxia’s temper flared up immediately. “You’re saying I’m impolite? As a friend attending Yuanyuan’s birthday party, what gives you the right to drive a guest away?”
“I didn’t name names about who was impolite, yet you insist on taking it personally and saying I’m driving you away. If that’s how you want to think, I can’t help you,” Yun Jiang said with a smile.
“What are you acting all high and mighty for? You’re nothing but a gold-dig—” Stunned by Yun Jiang’s “scumbag” style rhetoric, Liang Qiaoxia started to lash out.
Before she could finish, Liang Qiaoxia was pulled away by someone nearby, given no chance to continue.
“Yuanyuan, the restaurant manager wants me to confirm the menu with you. Come over for a moment.” Meng Yirou arrived just in time, packing Lu Yuan and Yun Jiang off together.
Liang Qiaoxia still tried to shake off her friend’s hand, saying crossly, “What are you pulling me for? If I don’t expose her true colors in public, this Yun Jiang will keep thinking she’s somebody, barking at me just because Lu Yuan is here. It’s hilarious!”
Her friend had a headache. The fact that Liang Qiaoxia could get into An University proved her IQ and EQ were fine, but she had been pampered since childhood, developing a sense of superiority. With her family background always backing her up, people usually couldn’t do anything to her.
She had held a natural hostility toward Yun Jiang since the start of school. Her grades weren’t as good as Yun Jiang’s, and she had lost in the campus forum’s vote for Department Belle as well as the Campus Belle selection. This had caused Liang Qiaoxia’s dissatisfaction with Yun Jiang to reach a peak.
Until now, that wasn’t the main issue. The main thing was that Yun Jiang had never paid her any attention, which Liang Qiaoxia found humiliating and infuriating. Add to that the fact that Yun Jiang had “stolen” Lu Yuan, the “flower of the high mountain,” taking away the marriage partner her brother had been thinking about since they were children.
These grievances had accumulated into an irreconcilable conflict.
Doing small things in private was one thing, but acting out in front of Lu Yuan now was just asking for trouble.
Her friend said, “Listen, what do someone else’s relationship matters have to do with you? Didn’t you notice Lu Yuan’s face was dark at the time? Do you want your family’s cooperation with Mingsheng to be cancelled?”
Liang Qiaoxia fell silent, her face full of resentment. Other things were manageable, but when a matter involved Lu Yuan, one could not afford to be anything less than cautious.
