Chapter 2: When the Phoenix Girl Goes Straight
Since she didn’t recognize a single person there, Yun Jiang took advantage of her lack of memory and treated everyone as mere passersby.
However, from their attitudes, Yun Jiang could sense that their perception of the “original owner” was quite poor. There was a faint undercurrent of dislike, yet they were wary because of a certain presence, preventing them from speaking their harsh thoughts aloud.
As for that feared presence, it was likely the host of the birthday party, Lu Yuan. Furthermore, the public impression of the relationship between the original owner and Lu Yuan seemed to be that they were on very good terms.
Had there been any impression of disrespect, what would have awaited Yun Jiang wouldn’t be this eerie silence; it would have been the condescension and belittlement of the crowd taking advantage of the host’s absence.
Having thought this through, Yun Jiang became even more fearless. Since both sides were watching each other like monkeys in a zoo, the worst she could do was “borrow the tiger’s terror” (use Lu Yuan’s influence). Who would end up suffering was anyone’s guess.
As long as she wasn’t embarrassed, the embarrassed ones wouldn’t be her.
Her indifferent attitude made those sizing her up lose interest. Since she didn’t speak, they wouldn’t take the initiative to approach her. Instead, they turned back and began whispering to those beside them.
The atmosphere returned to its previous liveliness, a liveliness that had nothing to do with Yun Jiang.
Maintaining a calm expression while holding her flowers, she walked through the door. This tranquil demeanor caused a person watching the scene from a corner to feel a momentary flash of surprise.
To be so composed and inscrutable that was a rare level of restraint. It didn’t seem like her at all.
A gaze that felt almost tangible made Yun Jiang instinctively uncomfortable. She looked back sharply and saw a young man sitting in the shadows by the floor-to-ceiling window.
The person being watched sat motionless. He looked refined, wearing gold-rimmed glasses, sitting there with a leisurely posture, completely detached from the bustling atmosphere.
Some people distance themselves from crowds because they naturally love peace; others do so out of innate arrogance, disdaining to mingle with the masses.
Seeing Yun Jiang look at him, he gave her a polite smile. His eyes behind the thin lenses curved slightly; it looked polite, but the smile didn’t reach his eyes.
Yun Jiang judged that the original owner had some history with him, but it wasn’t the kind of relationship where they would openly interact in front of others, so she simply nodded back in acknowledgment.
As expected, the man showed no sign of anything unusual. He shifted his gaze away and went back to staring at the coffee in his hand as if he were trying to see patterns in the foam.
Yun Jiang withdrew her gaze, wondering if she should also find a corner to hunker down in while waiting for Lu Yuan to appear.
After taking a few steps, someone grabbed her arm. A moist, warm palm pressed against the skin of her arm. Yun Jiang’s whole body stiffened, and she instinctively wanted to pull her arm away.
“I’ve been waiting for you for so long. I just went to the restroom and you arrived. Couldn’t find me, could you?”
At the moment of contact, a sharp pain shot through Yun Jiang’s head. Thousands of memories flooded her mind, turning her face pale and forcing her to brace herself just to stay standing.
Once the annoying buzzing in her ears receded, she heard the other person’s smiling voice speaking in a soft, gentle tone.
The voice said, “Is it very hot outside? I told you yesterday I’d pick you up and you said no. Look at how red your face is from the heat.”
Since the tone sounded familiar, Yun Jiang forced her body to relax and squeezed out a smile.
“Yeah… I was a bit late picking things up. How could I trouble you like that?”
Turning around, Yun Jiang froze the moment she saw the other woman’s face.
The person holding her was also a young woman, her makeup exquisite and a smile on her lips.
Because it was her birthday today, her clothing was somewhat elaborate. A diamond-encrusted tiara sat upon her head, securing her stray bangs, with her hair styled into a “princess” half-updo by a skilled stylist. The overhead lights caught the brilliant diamonds, casting a shimmering glow.
Upon hearing Yun Jiang’s words, she said reproachfully, “I’m not busy. Besides, how is picking you up a trouble?”
Yun Jiang didn’t speak. In a daze, she caught a whiff of the woman’s perfume it was as gentle as the person herself.
However, none of this was the most striking part. Yun Jiang felt that while the clothes complemented the girl, the girl herself was the true visual focus.
Her eyes were large, with pupils the color of translucent, warm amber. The deep creases of her double eyelids ran parallel to her eyeliner from the inner corner, like the smoothest stroke from a painter’s brush. At first glance, one could see the deep contours of her mixed-race heritage, yet there was even more of the classical beauty of an Eastern woman.
Chestnut-colored long curls fell over her fair, rounded shoulders. Her deep collarbones resembled butterflies about to take flight. Her shoulders were perfectly straight, partially obscured by the ends of her hair, adding a touch of gentleness. Further down, the layers of her light-colored formal dress piled up like a cake, revealing a pair of straight, slender legs.
She was a woman like a luminous pearl, radiating a hazy, gentle light, appearing amidst the soothing piano music as the focus of the entire room.
Seeing that Yun Jiang was staring without speaking, the girl holding her arm widened her smile and tilted her head. “Why are you just looking at me and not saying anything?”
“…” Yun Jiang’s gaze involuntarily landed on the side of her neck, where there was a tiny, vermillion mole on her fair, slender skin.
Yun Jiang was instantly struck by that smile, her heart racing wildly.
Only one thought crashed into her brain: she had fallen in love at first sight with this girl and wanted to pursue her.
Then she remembered this was the original owner’s girlfriend, Lu Yuan. Instantly, she put on a “mask of agony.”
Wait, I’ve occupied this body, so I AM the original owner. Never mind then.
Yun Jiang swallowed the phrase “Hello, let’s get married” and instead took hold of the other’s wrist. “Yuan Yuan is so beautiful today, I was dazed.”
Feeling that this sentence wasn’t sincere enough, Yun Jiang added, “Not just today. You are beautiful every day, but today is extra special. This color of dress suits you perfectly.”
“Really? Yirou picked this color for me, saying it highlights my fair skin.” Lu Yuan, unaware of Yun Jiang’s inner turmoil, was clearly very happy to be praised. A pale pink blush crept onto her cheeks.
Meng Yirou, who had followed behind her, suppressed the urge to roll her eyes. No matter what, it was hard for her to accept Lu Yuan being coaxed by a few words into acting like a lovesick fool.
However, she couldn’t bring herself to break up a couple to their faces, so she simply stood by with her arms crossed, watching.
Hearing Lu Yuan mention her, Meng Yirou’s irritation flared up again. She said in a slow, casual tone, “Well, if your girlfriend hadn’t said she was too busy and stood you up at the last minute, she could have picked a dress that suited your heart even better.”
Lu Yuan explained, “The student union called her in to help at the last minute. It’s not like she did it on purpose.”
“Right, she’s busy.” Meng Yirou smirked. Only Lu Yuan would believe such an excuse.
Anyone who was forced to wait for two hours with full makeup and hair done, only to be told at the last second that “something came up, I’m busy, I won’t be coming today”—well, even a god would be hard-pressed to escape a death sentence for that.
Yun Jiang knew there was a subtext to those words. Realizing the original owner was indeed in the wrong, she only smiled and remained silent.
Seeing that she didn’t bite and hadn’t even lost her temper, Meng Yirou felt it was quite strange.
Did Yun Jiang change her personality? she wondered.
Yun Jiang was the type who was beautiful and excelled academically, but she was prone to “blackening” her face (scowling). The slightest dissatisfaction would cause her expression to drop, yet she herself remained oblivious, thinking she was acting perfectly.
But Meng Yirou didn’t say anything more. The couple could solve their own problems. It was unnecessary to humiliate the person as a friend, as it would only hurt the relationship between her and Lu Yuan.
“Happy Birthday, Lu Yuan! You look so beautiful today.”
“Yun Jiang, you finally arrived. If you had stayed away any longer, Lu Yuan would have turned into a ‘wife-waiting stone’.”
“This dress Miss Lu is wearing looks like the latest from designer Anna. It suits her so well, it’s like a custom design.”
When Lu Yuan hadn’t been here, the area was cold and lonely. Now that Lu Yuan had been present for less than three minutes, people began to trickle over to wish her a happy birthday, praising her from head to toe.
When they ran out of things to say, they engaged Yun Jiang in small talk as if they were all on great terms, acting as if the earlier cold-shouldering had never happened.
The lingering pain in Yun Jiang’s head had not subsided, leaving her feeling slightly nauseous. She forced herself to keep up with the conversation.
“Are you feeling unwell? Did you get heatstroke on the way here?” Lu Yuan, who had been paying close attention to her, noticed her discomfort and asked with concern.
Yun Jiang also wanted to find a quiet place to sit for a while as she was feeling a bit breathless. She nodded and said, “It seems so.”
Seeing Yun Jiang’s increasingly pale face and worrying about heatstroke, Lu Yuan excused herself and quickly helped her to a seat on the side.
She ordered someone to bring water to cool her down. Regardless of her expensive dress, she knelt on the ground to feel Yun Jiang’s forehead and used a tissue to wipe her sweat.
Watching a pampered, wealthy young lady fuss over Yun Jiang like this—while Yun Jiang just sat there made the onlookers feel strangely uneasy.
Most of the guests came from privileged backgrounds and were used to being served, let alone Lu Yuan, who was raised in the lap of luxury and treated like a princess by her father.
It was rumored that for her birthday this year, Lu’s father had gifted her an overseas island as her private property.
Most people simply thought Yun Jiang was incredibly lucky. Not only had she caught Lu Yuan’s eye, but she had also been introduced to Lu’s father and gained his approval—she was practically a shoo-in as the Lu family’s daughter-in-law.
Others merely saw it as Yun Jiang, a poor student, managing to hook up with the heiress of the Lu family, rising like a phoenix. Her luck was staggering.
Meng Yirou, who had grown up with Lu Yuan, had heard many things about Yun Jiang before they started dating and felt more indignation than the others.
But Lu Yuan was set on this person. What could she do besides offer a few warnings? She couldn’t fight with her best friend over an outsider.
Lu Yuan took the water handed over by the server. If Yun Jiang hadn’t reached out to stop her, she probably would have personally fed it to her lips.
Judging by how practiced the movements were, it was clear she had done this many times. Meng Yirou found the scene painful to watch and turned her head away.
Grudgingly, she muttered under her breath, “She’s twenty-three years old, not three. You don’t need to feed her.”
Lu Yuan’s eyes never left Yun Jiang as she replied, “She’s dizzy. What if her hand is weak and she can’t hold the cup steadily?”
Meng Yirou was completely defeated by her logic. She really couldn’t understand how someone as excellent as Lu Yuan could be so hopelessly infatuated after meeting Yun Jiang.
Once upon a time, she even suspected that Yun Jiang wasn’t from a mountain village in the far north, but a master of “Gu” hexes from the Miao region. She had specifically dragged Lu Yuan on a trip to western Hunan, but the people there said Lu Yuan was fine she was just purely a “love brain.” (infatuated/obsessed)
This result made Meng Yirou so angry she couldn’t sleep for three days. She would rather believe Lu Yuan was under a spell than believe she was a “love brain.” The former could be solved with money; the latter was simply unsolvable.
“Fine, you two just stay here then.”
Seeing that the host’s heart was entirely pinned on Yun Jiang, Meng Yirou took over the responsibility of leading the others away, leaving the two of them alone to talk.
Lu Yuan looked at Yun Jiang expectantly, her hands resting on Yun Jiang’s knees. “How are you? Are you okay?”
After a glass of water, Yun Jiang’s dizziness subsided. She said, “I’m okay. I’m fine.”
No! I am not fine!
As Yun Jiang thought back to the memories, her gaze became complicated. She reached out and pulled the other woman up.
The original owner was quite simply a thankless, ungrateful scumbag!
